Omg I needed this. I’ve been learning Korean casually for almost two years and I just feel so behind. I just recently met in person with my italki teacher and a few of her other students and I just felt so stupid and like I knew nothing. I hate when people ask how long have you been learning because I feel like it’s not a fair judgment of what you should know. I had to remind myself that we all learn at different paces and different things work for different people. Learning a new language is more than just learning that language, you’re also learning how you yourself learn. It’s hard. I know part of my “failure” of learning is not being consistent enough but also I just need to let go and stop comparing myself to others and stop caring about making mistakes because those are learning opportunities. Thanks for the reminder and good tips for better study habits!

Even as an advanced learner, I still have to remind myself to review vocabulary. Being at a high level, it's easy to skip past unknown words because you understand the context, or to just look it up once, think "ok cool that's what it means", and then just move on and forget it five minutes later. It's easy to be lazy when you understand most of what's going on, but reviewing vocab is so much better for retention long-term!

I started studying korean with Billy go’s beginner’s course and I’m not sure what made me do this but I got into the habit of reviewing the past 3 grammars/video content before I started the new video, so as a beginner, I was CONSTANTLY reviewing . It became pretty much a habit for me and I’m so grateful that it did become that because that formed an excellent foundation of Korean for me to build upon. As an intermediate learner I still prioritise reviewing more than new content and I feel so satisfied with where I stand because even if I dont know a LOT of grammar and vocab, I’m atleast 75-80% confident with everything I have studied so far. Consistency and reviewing. These are the two tips I give to people who ask me because these have helped me immensely and continue to help me even now. Your videos always make me ‘think’. I love that.

@@santriesha881I use a website called how to study Korean, it’s very good to backup what you learn from billy and coursera- it’s a lot of reading but it’s still useful! Once you get to a point where you’ve gone through basics and grammar, begin using apps that test vocabulary, watch actual content in the language, test what you know! Make sure you’re constantly immersing yourself in the language to get used to hearing it, speaking, reading, writing, all that. And constantly review new things you’ve learned like the commenter above said!

I think what makes learning a language difficult for most adults, is that we forget how much it takes for kiddos to learn just one or two languages. The constant involvement in surrounding yourself with the language is so key to retaining that information. Watch shows in the language, challenge yourself to watch without subtitles, get involved with apps that involve structuring and practicing talking with people like once or twice a week. And it is totally okay to not be a master. Half the time, you only really need the basics, and the rest will come as you involve yourself too.

The reason kids learn languages fast is because their brains are literally empty and theyre absorbing it easily. An adult say age 30 is filled to the brim with information and have a much harder time to learn literally anything than somebody whos 6. Theres plenty of information on the matter.

Immersion is great if you can balance it with responsibilities. Actually using the language is great as well. Putting pencil to paper is a great to learn the alphabet. Repeating what people are saying or what you hear on tv or music can help tremendously as well. Think of language learning like exercise. Go your hardest for a few hours then take some rest days to think and process. Trust me, I learned Japanese to a level where I can hold and continue conversations, and it only took me 4 years.

    • @babycakelings
      @babycakelings 9 місяців тому

@@terraincognitagaming That's just not true. A baby is learning a language every second it's awake, that's why it's so good at learning. It is that babies only focus. But if you, a grown adult, had the time to spend 8 hours every day learning a language you would get up to a 6 year olds level way faster then the 6 year old did. It has nothing to do with what you already know and 100% is about the time you have to study and how intelligent you already are. You will always be smarter then 6 year old you, so in theory you will always learn better. But life gets in the way.

Revisions are so important! Because let's be honest, Korean grammar (when you grasp the basics) seems so easy. All you have to do is to add a certain ending to the verb. "Seems" is the key word :P It's difficult to memorise everything and even if you remember the meaning you don't actually remember if this particular grammar point can be used in past tense and what you should add to the verb when it ends with a vowel and so on.
And also last tip: use everything in practise. Read a lot. Translate a lot. Write a lot. Speak a lot. It works, honestly. Even if you commit the most stupid mistakes, at least you will remember it better :D From my own personal experience I know that it works. Recently I wrote a comment in English (I am not a native English speaker) and in that comment I wrote "on 1.5 speed" and "in 1.5 speed" (yeah, two mistakes, I didn't realise I had done them on one comment). Then somebody responded and wrote "at 1.5 speed". That person didn't correct me, just used that words in a sentence. And believe, now I REALLY remember what is the correct form :D
Thanks for sharing with us your tips :D

By waiting a few weeks I will either have started to forget it, or I've heard it several times those weeks which cemented it into my brain and then the second time reading about it I will relate to it with real world understanding behind it. My main goal is being able to listen and read (aka input) so my speaking and writing ability (aka output) is way behind by choice right now. I practice it but it isn't the same priority as of right now. I do love HelloTalk for my output practice! I think my speaking and writing is around an A2 and my listening comprehension is probably B1.

It’s quite embarrassing and frustrating especially because it’s already been 2 years and I feel like I’m stuck at a lower level and having to translate everything if I can’t understand more than 2 words. But I have the strength to keep going because I know I can do it💪🏾

It's a struggle for all of us. This week I was reading a text with my Korean teacher on the topic of 한국의 사계절. We'd just reviewed the vocabulary as well but I couldn't for the life of me figure out what 사계절 meant. Turns out it was simply 사 (4) + 계절 (season) which I'd just reviewed. At this point I feel like I should've stopped doing these kinds of mistakes but no, they're still very much there after a year and a half of learning Korean.

100% right about not mattering whether you have access to Korean speakers or not. 30 years of being raised in a Korean household and i can barely communicate with my parents without the assistance of a translator app. i never studied or reviewed my Korean, so if you're not going to do that then being around Korean speakers is not going to help

Huh, seems like I did the right then, I‘m currently learning korean with duolingo and I refuse to progress to the next chapter because, whenever I do lightening challenges I can see which part I lack. So unless I get all three stars after each chapter, I‘m reviewing and will keep reviewing 😅 I also have about a billion screenshots for my vocab notebook and completed with grammar books. Right now my korean friend is busy with her studies, but before that we skyped once per week and she went through pronounciation etc which was super helpful!

The main problems is focusing solely on memorising words out of context and grammar points, and not practicing. On the practicing part is a really hard task if you want to practice with other learners; since most don't seem to dare to do it and you're just there... Alone... with not enough knowledge to speak with natives ...

You got me with the clickbait, XD but I liked the video. Thank you for the advice. I like apps for learning because they can be fun, and neuroscience shows that you actually learn faster when you're having fun. Oy. For all that, I'm still at toddler, "Igo juseyo." level. We lived in Korea a few years ago and we just moved back. Last time I was the only one trying to learn, and I messed up often enough to get discouraged. I'm a bibliophile so I really wanted to learn it well enough to start reading the novels here. Otherwise I'm stuck to a single shelf at most bookstores. This time we told our teenagers that the person to come up with the best game for learning Korean will get their very own Sulbing the next time we go. (We usually share cuz they're huge.) ^.^ That worked like a charm. I told them we'd be doing this competition each month, and we'd vote for the winner. I'll have to let them know about Mirinae, I think they might be interested in it. ^.^ Thank you again!

I speak three languages so amma tell u this ...Studying grammar for any language is USELESS believe me or not u don't need it .. just listen to the language and try to copy those sentences that u heard and in the same time go translate it and try to listen to native people to know how to talk and react in any situation .. and try to learn words also by hearing conversation cuz this is the best way to learn any language and its easy and won't take alot of time u just need to practice.. for writing learn the alphabet then try to write any words you know and read books or anything that could help you read .. with the time and practice you will be just like a native speaker and make sure to correct ur accent... this how i learned arabic without any teacher or grammar stuff in a very young age... -i'm sorry if i did a mistake, am still learning and correcting my English -

It really depends on the person but my top 1 Best way to learn it in entertaining way, or like the best way to learn is watching Kdramas or Korean Tv Shows, or just simply Korean videos on UA-cam, like korean Vloggers sometimes put some subtitles English and korean, so it really helps me alot, also don't try to learn in it all quickly, just learn the things you talk everyday, it's the best way too, try to record or note it every single sentences you say everyday and try to learn it in korean, so you can practice Korean sentences because that's the sentence you say everyday

I did improve from the time I joined the company (its just been 7months) but I am still lacking :(

Honestly at the moment, Korean is not a priority, so much so that I’m almost to the point of just saying I’m not going to learn. And I don’t know how to change that. Maybe I missed my timing back when I ACTUALLY had time 😂. But your video hit a different chord with me. I’m a full time graduate student and studying ANYTHING is a struggle. It always has been. And I’m not sure why. I don’t know if it’s because I can’t stand to see my handwriting again or if I feel it’s a waste of time (it’s not, I just don’t want to do it) but reviewing is important. I had this problem for years. When I first started studying foreign languages, I would set my brain on auto-pilot and just write everything down from whatever lesson I was working on, and then never review it again because my young teenager brain thought that writing something down = permanently locking it in my brain vault forever. I am how a young adult and about a little under a year ago, I started getting serious about Korean and now I do daily lessons with LOTS of review (still all self-study), and I can say that I've made a lot more progress then I ever did while "learning" casually on and off for multiple years.
In conclusion; No matter if you're in a class or learning on your own, structure, consistency and review are the most important things when it comes to learning a language effectively.

Well done video! Many thanks to the author of the channel for the recommendations! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.
