- I've been having a clear out in the studio for the last couple of weeks and looking for reasons to sell and reasons to keep bits of gear...
So I thought I'd make a quick video on some of my thoughts on the Moog DFAM/Drummer From Another Mother over the last 12 months or so, things I've both loved & things I've loved less and whether or not it should stay..!
As ever feel free to leave comments or questions.
Please, also feel free to hit Like and to Subscribe with the Bell and to check out my other videos on this and lots of other gear...
Many thanks. - Навчання та стиль
Bonus points for the Crass stencil.
Haha Cheers mate!
"Eats time, and shits beats" should definitely have been Moogs marketing slogan for this!
How Crass!😂
I’ve got mine paired with the Arturia BeatStep Pro, awesome combo. Thanks for the fun review!
Best machine ever for finding inspiration and the sound is unreal
"Eats time and shits beats" and bringing me back to reality with "550£ is a lot of money for a fart machine" just earned you a sub.
Haha thank you, always appreciated..!!
I just bought one and doubt I'll regret it based on your review, I'll watch all your stuff now... thanks man
You'll definitely have a great time with it! They really are pretty cool...! I wasn't using mine as much as I'd have expected so sold it in the end to buy a System-8... not without the occasional regret about parting with it though!
@@krsTBedfordStudios All the stuff I buy is to use live at the drum set so it's all about fun until I actually do something people take seriously
Thanks for the information and the Crass logo
Nice one!! 😉
Thanks 🙏🏻 I was going to sell mine as well.
You changed my mind.
Glad to have helped! I sold mine in the end, but not without a few regrets!
love this review - hooked to this channel
Hey Jon, only just saw your comment!
Many thanks mate, I really appreciate it!
Glad I watched this video! Surprised at the midi situation! 😲 Thanks man! 😃🐀
Thanks mate, yeah, non existent... lol ! A shame, because this would make a really interesting synth, I've patched it for melody before and it's pretty sweet sounding!
@@krsTBedfordStudios MAFD can be bought, but it is a pain in the arse to be spending another £3100+ to get MIDI... I've started sampling mine into Ableton as it's getting it's clock from a Subharmonicon which is in turn getting incoming MIDI...
@@richardjames111 I looked at those recently..! and then wondered about using another semi-modular synth as an intermediary for midi and sending pitch etc from there...
@@krsTBedfordStudios Just realsied i put £3100!!?!! haha... Not that expensive, but another £100+ is still annoying... The only problem with the MAFD at the minute is that i think they ship from America, so who knows how long it would take to get to the UK and how much it would actually end up costing... :(
@@richardjames111 I'm guessing with shipping and customs you could easily expect it to be around £200... would be interesting to use though, the dfam is capable of some great sounds and it'd be great to be able to get the most out of it..!
It is the happy accident creator. I mostly use it for sub bass. That seems to be the most consistent sound that I can replicate. When jamming its fun cause you just don't know for sure what it might do. I would agree its not really a drum machine, but can make drum sounds.
Hey Sunny..! Yeah, it's always a gamble to jam with it..! lol I thinking quantized samples would be good, I really do love the noise it makes...!
how easy is it to sync with Ableton?
Not too difficult, but you'll need a middle man, say a midi controller which has clock or trigger out ...
Was thinking about picking this up to go along with the k2. I think I’d end up just using it to sample from for drum hits. Think my spending money might be better used elsewhere
Like your crass symbol . Saw them back in 81. Ps just bought the moog mother32 and the dfam 🙂
Nice result, on all points!!
I sync the dtam with my korg volca beats which is making the basic kicks and the dfam all the in between percussion sounds and this is awesome and then i sync with my moog grandmother
Yeah, that sounds like a lot of fun..!! Awesome..!!!
im a bit lost.. i dont know how to sync/ integrate it in my setup which is very unusual. im using fl studio, anslog rytm 2 and dfam. But i cant sync them ... :(
I can see why you are struggling! The Elektron has no trigger out, you will need a midi to cv converter.. ones are available for the dfam I believe, try to Google Dfam midi and check out the MAFD by Sonoclast.
A very fair assessment. I haven't used mine in 10 months and I'm someone who makes a point of forcing myself to return to a piece of gear I haven't used in a while. And it's not because I think it's a crock, it just doesn't suit my style or workflow. So between it and my Subharmonicon I could have had a Rev 2. If you know anyone looking for a swap or a trustworthy forum to assist in that then I'd really appreciate it.
Cheers,
F
They're still very popular, and hardly many about on the used market so should still fetch a decent price Fin. I ended up listing mine on ebay after all..!
Hello mate!! I’m still thinking about getting one but not sure, I enjoy making techno, I have a roland tr8s and a couple korgs, but kinda want something different, also the bpm range on the dfam is hugeee so the only way of syncing it it would be through the cv to one of my korgs i think ( correct me if I’m wrong please )! So, all this said, you think it would be nice to play around with my other things? This wouldn’t be use a drum machine because as I said, I have the Roland, so it would be more to make cool sequences and weird sounds! I’ll wait for your opinion, and thanks for your vids!!
Hey Alejandro, I'd definitely say try one and see if you can make it fit... its a great techno machine, and full of some perfect sounds..!
The only reason I’m not selling mine is because is the perfect techno machine. I’m preparing a series of patches and videos in my channel pretty soon so keep an eye!
I've just bought a replacement for the one I sold... lol
@@krsTBedfordStudios I can see that happening to me too lol I’ve been really considering to sell mine due to not much use… and when I patch something cool, stays patched for months… but the. I keep making patches that are so fun… cannot sell it.
Enjoy and congratulations on the fun video!
@@MULTIMAN-MUSIC many thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah, I just missed having something stupid and fun to play with!!
Do you think I can play a dfam through a bass amp?
Yes but you'll lose the top end frequencies...
It will sound immense though!!
@@krsTBedfordStudios thank you! Got mine coming in acouple days! I'm excited!
@@flowers4paimon record everything...!! It's a great machine with some fantastic sweet spots!
Crass symbol got a sub outta me!
Haha Cheers Chris! I love it when people notice!! (A)
Like the banter. You could give Tim Shoebridge a run for his money...
Haha now that IS a compliment, Tim does some of the greatest video...! Many thanks, I'm really glad that you enjoyed it! 😀
Nice crass stencil
You could probably fit slightly larger knobs over those, such as the Boss pedal type.
Good video.
Convinced me NOT to buy one!
Yeah you could, quite easily too...! The nubs are small enough that you could sleeve them with easier to use pots...
If you ever get the chance to use one or see one anywhere then give them a whirl.. they ARE a lot of fun and make some totally unique sounds...
@@krsTBedfordStudios Hi Pete. They look the same as the Volca pots; and on a lot of the small pedals.
I have a Mother 32, which I love very much. I bought it with money I got when my own mother died a few years back.
Not sure if I will be getting any more Moog gear soon, unless I come into some big cash!
They are great. You can really feel the electronics breathe.
@@robguitarwizard they really are organic sounding, and you're right I believe, they're the same size as volca pots I think, so those upgrade pots fit these too...
Enjoyed the vid and watched until the end. Cheers! This is one of those vids where even the most wearisomely delivered critique simply rings with me as an absolute killer behaviour of the unit. Who wants tightly scoped easy to program devices? Loads of software for that. Maaasssive creativity is a lot to handle, but it's the feeling of life itself to carve and shape it into your thought forms.
Also, the bass that comes out of the DFAM is BY FAR the nicest analog bass tone I've ever hear. How does it sound that good? The M-32 is amazing but in terms of bass the DFAM is just larger on a planetary scale.
Yeah I like this module a lot. Way too easy to rave about it!
It's very much a marmite machine...! You're right though, there is nothing that sounds quite like it, it's just dripping in analogue goodness lol
@@krsTBedfordStudios lolol “a marmite machine”… you either love it or hate it… comment of the year sir, you just earned a new subscriber!
@@MULTIMAN-MUSIC haha much appreciated!!
So ya not selling it?! Yey
Yeah but no but yeah... selling it still JC lol
CRASS!
Love it when people recognise it!! 👌
@@krsTBedfordStudios it was all about punk for me when I was young. I hated synths until I heard Grandaddy and Aphex Twin
@@DanielPerryMusic same... punk and thrash... until Rotterdam Terror Corp and Ruffneck... someone pointed out how bad acid was basically just Slayer... 🤔🤣
DFAM can do a mean impression of Penny’s trademark snare and kick ✊🤘
@@bassheavy6459 definitely...! Lol In your face military drumming!! 🤣
Crass, baby!
It took me a year or two of debating should I sell it or not, but now, it is one of my favorites. In contrast to usual opinions, I think it's amazing DRUM MACHINE for NON techno genres. Don't get me wrong, I do love and make techno.
I think its great for techno, especially with it only having 8 steps...! I'm missing it but happy with its replacement! Lol
@@krsTBedfordStudios what instrument did u buy for its replacement?
@@lucagagliano4563 I sold both the DFAM and the Mother-32 and bought a System-8...!
So glad I did, its just awesome 👌
Subharmonicon????
Ahhh alas.... I just sold this pair before completing the trio...!! I sold both Moogs to finance a Roland System-8... I thought I should buy a synth I might get around to making some actual music with eventually!! Lol
Yep, not buying one now, ace
Haha!! Maybe find one to play before deciding? I do kinda regret selling this and I can still see me buying another, I think I miss the fun of the unpredictable lol
@@krsTBedfordStudios lol I just installed Ruismaker Noir on my iPad which seems to be a kind of a clone but with the ability to midi and increase step count to 32 or more, I lost about 3 hours on it last night lol only a few quid too
Eats time and shits beats 🤣. Now I've added it to my list
It's great if you don't want to get anything done...!! Lol The DFAM is my favourite form of procrastination..!! 🤣🤣
@@krsTBedfordStudios hehehe. Not sure I need any more excuses to procrastinate
Just call it "Musical expression" nobody will question you..!! Lol
A lot of money for a fart machine, that really made me laugh.
It's a true story Danny..!! 😉🤣
so much talking, barely any playing?
It got played plenty in many of my other videos, this was just my thoughts on the actual machine itself from a users perspective 😃
