  • I've been having a clear out in the studio for the last couple of weeks and looking for reasons to sell and reasons to keep bits of gear...
So I thought I'd make a quick video on some of my thoughts on the Moog DFAM/Drummer From Another Mother over the last 12 months or so, things I've both loved & things I've loved less and whether or not it should stay..!
As ever feel free to leave comments or questions.
Please, also feel free to hit Like and to Subscribe with the Bell and to check out my other videos on this and lots of other gear...
    Many thanks.

@@krsTBedfordStudios MAFD can be bought, but it is a pain in the arse to be spending another £3100+ to get MIDI... I've started sampling mine into Ableton as it's getting it's clock from a Subharmonicon which is in turn getting incoming MIDI...

It is the happy accident creator. I mostly use it for sub bass. That seems to be the most consistent sound that I can replicate. When jamming its fun cause you just don't know for sure what it might do. I would agree its not really a drum machine, but can make drum sounds.

I can see why you are struggling! The Elektron has no trigger out, you will need a midi to cv converter.. ones are available for the dfam I believe, try to Google Dfam midi and check out the MAFD by Sonoclast.

A very fair assessment. I haven't used mine in 10 months and I'm someone who makes a point of forcing myself to return to a piece of gear I haven't used in a while. And it's not because I think it's a crock, it just doesn't suit my style or workflow. So between it and my Subharmonicon I could have had a Rev 2. If you know anyone looking for a swap or a trustworthy forum to assist in that then I'd really appreciate it.
    Cheers,

Hello mate!! I’m still thinking about getting one but not sure, I enjoy making techno, I have a roland tr8s and a couple korgs, but kinda want something different, also the bpm range on the dfam is hugeee so the only way of syncing it it would be through the cv to one of my korgs i think ( correct me if I’m wrong please )! So, all this said, you think it would be nice to play around with my other things? This wouldn’t be use a drum machine because as I said, I have the Roland, so it would be more to make cool sequences and weird sounds! I’ll wait for your opinion, and thanks for your vids!!

Enjoyed the vid and watched until the end. Cheers! This is one of those vids where even the most wearisomely delivered critique simply rings with me as an absolute killer behaviour of the unit. Who wants tightly scoped easy to program devices? Loads of software for that. Maaasssive creativity is a lot to handle, but it's the feeling of life itself to carve and shape it into your thought forms.
Also, the bass that comes out of the DFAM is BY FAR the nicest analog bass tone I've ever hear. How does it sound that good? The M-32 is amazing but in terms of bass the DFAM is just larger on a planetary scale.
Yeah I like this module a lot. Way too easy to rave about it!
