I'm still amazed that neither Lucas nor Disney has decided to release the original trilogy unedited as the "Classic Edition." It seems a no-brainer way to get fans to buy the original trilogy movies yet again. It's like a license to print money.
Lucas doesn't have any say in what's released anymore he signed out all over the Disney I wonder if he put a clause in the contract that they could never show the original versions of the films again never heard of a director who hated his masterpieces so much that he had to go around and Tinker with them until they're almost ruined
@@jedispock8222 Maybe he hates his first wife, who had a hand in editing and thinking out at least the first two movies, enough that he wanted to erase anything that most reminded him of her input out of them. Or something else similar, if not her then maybe somebody else.
Supposedly masters of the original versions were destroyed after the DVD release. While such rumors are rarely true, it would fit Lucas' history of extreme action to do so and/or make a ban on future releases of the original versions a condition for the sale to Disney.
Years ago, at a comic con, I found a DVD box set of the original trilogy pre-special edition. I'm so glad I have that. I also own a copy of Star Wars on VHS from before George added the episode number and A New Hope. That is a prized possession.
You talking about the limited edition version that had both the remasters and the original trilogy on the same discs? I bought that at the time because it was made clear we'd never have another chance to own the originals
A mate of mine has them all on VHS, the same cuts! I watched them a few years back and was amused when Han and Chewie ran into trouble on the first Death Star, let's jus say!
You neglected to mention the "krayt dragon" scream of Obi Wan's to scare the sand person away from Luke towards the beginning of Episode 4. The original version was run through a sound editor of some sort yet still sounded more beast like than the "drunken redneck at Nascar" scream it got replaced by. That, to me, is a much worse sin than Vader's "No" during the Palpatine toss at the end of Jedi.
Yeah in the end it was changed 3 times at least. Once for the Special editions and then again for another re-release of the special editions a few years later. It's like he was never satisfied.
There is also a scene that was altered when Obi Wan is turning off the power to the tractor beam. In original new hope the English word Power and some numbers are replaced with the galactic language font.
Han shot last. There was only one shot and it was by Han. And it's not murder. Greego was pointing a blaster at Han and threatened to kill him. That makes it self-defence.
“For those who remember, those that will never forget, and a whole new generation to experience for the first time” If you know the quote I bet your vhs copy’s are just as worn out as mine.
Also, to anyone who thinks fans don't like Yub Nub. My college held a Return of the Jedi screening of the original print and everyone was singing along to the Yub Nub song. It's cheesy, it's corny and it's great for the ending of the story. Yub Nub Forever!
Honestly liked the celebration montage as it links it together with everything else. I hope they add more to the celebration as the Universe expands. Would really be cool to see a celebration in Ferrix
Great video but one thing I was surprised was not mentioned as an example of something later added that shouldn't have been there in the first place. Often when making films one runs across the phenomenon known as the "happy accident". For example, a cloud passes in front of the sun at just the right moment while filming thus further highlighting a particular feeling or mood. In the case of the original "SW" trilogy, the fact that they couldn't show Jabba in '77 as he would appear six years later turned out to be a perfect example of this fortuitous event. By originally not showing Jabba in either the original and later "Empire" Jabba's mystery and menace were greatly enhanced so that when he finally appeared in '83 in "Jedi" it was a worthwhile pay-off after seeing his off-screen influence on Han's motivations and behavior in the first two films. Thus when he finally appeared audiences were not disappointed when we finally got to meet the loathsome character in person and as a result he more than lived up to his reputation as a result.
Damn I really hate when fans continually try to make the argument that Anakin “died” on Mustafar. First of all he didn’t die, you don’t die just from changing your name and ideology, secondly, it seems like he went back to identifying as Anakin around the time he saved Luke from Palpatines force lightening, so by that logic his force ghost either should have stayed with the elder Shaw or the force ghost as an unmasked Vader. It makes no sense to keep Obi as old as Alec Guinness and not revert him to Ewan younger look as well. The 2004 remastering is known as “the logic of marketing”.
One of the best arguments for holding onto original physical copies of media. I can watch my DVDs of the original theatrical releases any time with all these moments still in there. Can't just hope and pray the digital or streaming versions of things will go unaltered.
My comment is for the fans. Maybe, No. 11, Vader's change of dialog from TESB. The original "Bring my shuttle." To the revised version, "Inform my Star Destroyer of my arrival." Or something like that.
As someone who was single-digit age for most of the 80's, most if not all of the attempts to 'improve' did far more damage. I had some qualms with Han counter-shooting someone who held him at gunpoint and somehow missed, Boba;s voice change (the delivery was not as good), and the replacement songs in RotJ were worse. But the biggest disappointment was Vader's two "No's." This scene marked the climax of not just the film, not just the trilogy even, but the story. And after finding a rare video seeing it as I had almost 40 years ago, Prowse (along with the editing) did such an amazing job of portraying the character's emotions and thought process not only without saying a word, but also while wearing a mask covering any facial communication. As he turned his head, mask reflecting the death-rays being emitted, from his SON begging for his life to be saved to his master filled with hatred towards his own family, you saw the self-conflict, as well as the realization that doing what was right would end in his own death. But then as his head leaned back and the music changed from dissonance to a powerful force theme, You felt a surge of emotion and chills throughout your body as he clearly made a statement without a single word, "THAT'S... MY....SON!!!!" SOOOOOOO much more powerful without the 'No's' added.
I cannot even watch this scene on Disney when he starts to say no and then no louder it totally pulls you out of the moment I remember seeing this at the Eastland twin cinema in 83 you couldn't hear a sound in the theater except what was going on the screen I mean you couldn't hear anybody breathing and then when Vader grabbed Palpatine up over his head and threw him down the reactor shaft everybody in the theater went nuts I know Disney Gets a lot of hate for their bastardization of Star Wars but the bastardization of Star Wars really started with Lucas
@@jedispock8222 Totally agree. This moment was searingly emotional for me as a kid. Now spoilt by idiotic telegraphing of emotion. It felt so violently powerful in its original form. The new version almost makes it cringeworthy. This is the moment, above all others, that I hope and pray may be restored to its original form one day.
Most attempts to improve did exactly that. You just don't notice most of them. The things that stick out, like Jedi Rock and Han not shooting first, are the problem.
The sheer intensity of emotion in that scene - portrayed through a damn MASK - was so good that I remember people having conversations on it at the time. All pissed away with not just an unnecessary change but an absolutely cringe inducing one.
Harmy's despecialized editions exist. Some other really good fan remasters out there with 1080p and/or 4k upscales, color correction, hand corrected film scratches, color fixing, sound mastering, etc etc etc. Hell one guy even went so far as to entirely recreate the rebel hangar on hot with minitures, and reshoot the wampa attack.
I'm SO HAPPY to have grabbed the trilogy on DVD in the early 2000s. Each movie has 2 discs, one with the special edition and one with the original, unedited film upgraded from the laserdisc source! I'm never getting rid of them!
It's gold, right? The later DVD releases were silver and only had the special editions on them. Or is it the other way round. I have (had) them too, though during a move I have misplaced my Empire DVD
For me, the worst change to Empire was changing Vader's line, "Bring my shuttle." to the absolutely worthless line, "Inform my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival." (or whatever it is now). There was so much pain and emotion in the original that we start to see Vader getting his first taste of conflict.
I have the DVD set of the original trilogy without any of the changes made from 1997 onwards that was released the as bonus content to a release of the Special Edition Trilogy.
Solo dodging a point blank laser blast while leaning back casually against the backrest and shooting Greedo at the same time, might make him the fastest being in the universe. He actually didn't dodge, he phase shifted and didn't even effing blink hahahaha
I have the Widescreen versions from the early 90s on VHS and about 15 years ago I burnt those versions onto DVD's so I'd have nice clean versions for many years to come, so I can see the originals any time I want
So glad I have the originals on DVD! I bought the boxed set that had the remastered versions with the original versions as bonus features. Also, Boba Fett was actually introduced in 1978 on the Star Wars Holiday Special.
I think Lucas was right to "Busy" up the Mos Eisley scenes. Think of it as a major transport hub like London's Heathrow Airport, with hangers, cargo and service facilities to accommodate all the spacecraft that arrive at, or depart from there. Add to that lodging, restaurants, and cantina to serve the needs of the passengers and crews of the ships.
Minor point: Boba Fett was first introduced on the big screen in Empire, but his first-ever appearance was actually in the animated portion of the Star Wars Holiday Special.
@@jeromevaleska2014 looks like George Lucas' attempt to make the original holiday special from the '70s disappear from human memory is starting to work. The only one i had a problem with was the vader noooo!!! I remember how impactful that scene was when Vader out of nowhere picked Palpatine up threw him to his death..Before that you Weren`t sure what he was going to do.
There is an old expression... if it ain't broke, don't fix it... George made 3 absolute masterpieces of cinema, which is why they are so revered by so many people. He really should have left them alone, or just released a directors special edition with the extra for those that wanted it, but leave the original cinema editions as the mainstream.
I have the originals on VHS of episode 4, 5 and 6. In college I convinced one of our RAs to do a Star Wars all movie run over 2 days. The first day was the episode 1 through 3 and the second was with 4 through. We made sure to let everyone know that the how rare this will be, we put on the poster "Come see Han shoot first."
Most people have no idea what the special editions actually did to the movies outside of obvious changes like Greedo shooting first. There was a ton of excellent changes made that people gloss over.
I've never watched the new ones that they put out. I've only seen the originals. And this is the reason why. When you watch something that leaves an impression on you, you don't want that muddied up by them tampering with what you remember and hold dear to you. And you're right, unless you have the originals, you'll never see the original movies ever again and that is sad to me.
If you don't like our new movies or shows you can always go back and watch the old ones - nobody's taking them away from you. George Lucas: "Hold my blue milk."
Several years ago, Lucas begrudginly put the original theatrical cuts as "bonus features" on yet another special edition box set. These are the dvds I watch when I want to watch Star Wars. They're not remastered or cleaned up in any way, but my dvd of the first movie is so original, it doesn't even say "Episode IV" in the opening crawl. It's literally the version that I saw in theaters when I was six years old.
I never use the title “A New Hope.” To me, that movie is forever “Star Wars.” When specificity is needed, I say, “the original Star Wars,” or “the first Star Wars movie.”
A less noticeable change in A New Hope is the voice overdub of aunt Beru. Even though the words aren't altered, the original version portrayed a different intonation. Not sure why it was altered.
When Obi-wan says Mos Eisley is full of scum and villainy , you expect it to look more like a Southampton council estate not a few sand castles with a couple of Bearded dragons walking around.
The use of the word 'never' really is absolute. Only revisionists (and possibly the Sith) deal in absolutes. Four words -Original Phantom Menace Disc. Another two - Despecialised Editions.
I didn't really mind the force ghost part at all, Since Hayden is almost the age that Anakin was in the Saga they should just re-shoot it with Current Hayden. It almost makes enough sense to replace Shaw with Hayden in Anakin's death scene for more continuity but there would prob be waaaay too much uproar for that
@@BrianBisetti I actually prefer the silver screen edition. It looks like it did when I watched it growing up. High def is less important than not seeing the special edition changes
Couldn't agree more! Yes, maybe having the hologram of Palpatine made some sense but the majority of Lucas's "tweaks" are bloody annoying. Like the "Special" version of the band in Jabba's Palace. Why shouldn't Han Shoot first? Greedo was pointing a blaster at him AND suggested he might forget he saw him if he gave up either the money or his ship. . . . Also Han shooting first should've been number 1 . . . . I don't know . . . give Mr. Lucas a new toy to play with (CGI) and he spoils things
Sadly, Han shooting first had another reason: movie rating. Since these were altered and being put in theaters again, they had to be resubmitted to the MPAA, and they were going to hit it with a PG-13 rating if the original version of Han shooting Greedo was kept as-is.
I think the Death Star attack in ANH had many shots replaced with CGI. Especially the ones with X-Wings. I think it's really sad George Lucas decided to do that because so many people worked hard on the special effects and models back when studios didn't believe Star Wars will be a success. But those special effects were what blew people away and made us believe there really is a galaxy far, far away. And he inspired so many aspiring filmmakers to express their creativity from there.
In the line of explaining the Hayden Force Ghost, maybe one can logic it as that is how Anakin thought of himself, as Vader may not have been fond of looking at himself in mirrors. Thus, when becoming a ghost, Anakin was able to revert to his pre-burning prime. But then I am a fanfic reader, so I have a tendency to have creative thoughts in line with fanfic ideas.
Aye, ive got ma dad's VHS of star wars before it was a new hope, its got a white saber for obi wan during the vader fight too, not even lucus himself claimed that he doesn't have a copy of this due to his many recuts
You would think that the fact that the original trilogy movies were massive successes would make it pretty clear that they were good enough as they were.
I was an enormous fan of the original trilogy back in the day. I never expect to watch it again, since I don’t want to have my fond memories of it altered.
@@noname-jt6kl Sis, my memory is still intact, so I have no need to see the films again. I am not much of a movie fan anymore. I prefer live theatre. You might want to get over the idea that other people need to be like you.
I totally agree with Jules about the voice of of Boba Fett being swapped with Temura Morrison's voice The actor who originally spoke Boba's line made him sound far more menacing
The rumor is Lucas called Morrison late at night while he was asleep to record the lines over the phone. Morrison wasn't fully awake and didn't quite get what was going on so thats why his lines sound so off.
The change to empire strikes back with Ian being changed ruined revenge of the sith for me. As I brought the dvds and then realised he was the emperor.
I know no one is going to believe me, but when I saw Star Wars on initial release in 1977 when luke throws the rope so they can swing across the bridge, he misses. Then he winds the rope back up and makes it. I remember that vividly. And on first release of Empire, after Vader telling Luke the big news, Luke jumps off the platform…., but Vader used the force and brought him back up. Then he talks again and Luke falls, this time Vader let’s him go. The hats why vaders arm was up when Luke fell. I know, no one’s going to believe that but I remember it vividly.
You can still Sebastian Shaw's Anakin Force Ghost in the Star Wars Encyclopedia that I have! It predates not only the Prequel Trilogy but also the 1997 Remasters! Funny to say Kennedy had no source material to work from, isn't it?
Maybe others won't but I will. Still have the original 80s VHS tapes and the double DVD releases they did where 1 DVD was the movie left unmodified on purpose.
Ironically your number 10. Han shoots first, is also Star Wars... don't know if this is mentioned later I've just started watching but the sub title of A New Hope doesn't come until 1981... previously the movie was simply Star Wars.
Personally, I disagree with those who argue "Han shot first". Not because I agree with the change to this scene but because the statement implies that Greedo shot at all.
The part I find silliest of han shooting first is its painfully obvious Greedo is about to pull the trigger. I saw that when I was a kid seeing it back in original form. Hans not brutally killing Greedo for no reason its self defense

Sebastian Shaw,
We will never forget
Oooorrrrrr we can ALL enjoy the VCR and DVDs collections we have
I'd vote for Jules to do ALL the lists!!!!!!
Thank God when the special editions were released on DVD I brought the dual disks version which contain the original versions of each films.
Me too but it's a pity they don't offer the original as an option.
Han shot first!
Lol
How about the original theatrical release opening. The one without 'Part IV'.
Thank god for the specialized editions
If you don't like our new movies or shows you can always go back and watch the old ones - nobody's taking them away from you.
George Lucas: "Hold my blue milk."
Several years ago, Lucas begrudginly put the original theatrical cuts as "bonus features" on yet another special edition box set. These are the dvds I watch when I want to watch Star Wars.
They're not remastered or cleaned up in any way, but my dvd of the first movie is so original, it doesn't even say "Episode IV" in the opening crawl.
It's literally the version that I saw in theaters when I was six years old.
I never use the title “A New Hope.” To me, that movie is forever “Star Wars.”
When specificity is needed, I say, “the original Star Wars,” or “the first Star Wars movie.”
@@janach1305 exactly!
A less noticeable change in A New Hope is the voice overdub of aunt Beru. Even though the words aren't altered, the original version portrayed a different intonation. Not sure why it was altered.
If Vader had Hayden's face in episode 6, ok. Force ghost change when we just saw Shaw?
Now that Hayden is old enough, they should just have him reshoot Vader’s death scene and splice it into ROTJ.
I have the original VHS tapes, these are the moment I see exclusively.
I liked the 1st "no" added in that scene. It was deep, subtle added to the tension of Vader's conflict... The 2nd NOOOOOOOO ruined though xD
I've got the THX remasters on VHS. I can watch " forbidden" Star Wars anytime.
I still have the original versions on DVD, small note, also have Episode 1 DVD with puppet Yoda
You missed Obi Wan's Krayt Dragon yell😉
My 2005 trilogy has a lot of these changes, but at least I don't have to hear the "Nooo; NOOOOOOOOOO!" lols
I didn't really mind the force ghost part at all, Since Hayden is almost the age that Anakin was in the Saga they should just re-shoot it with Current Hayden. It almost makes enough sense to replace Shaw with Hayden in Anakin's death scene for more continuity but there would prob be waaaay too much uproar for that
The original versions are the best good thing I have them on dvd
I have the original vcr of the star wars 4.5.6. I wish I had a vcr to watch them it would be nice to have a dvd of the original movies
Get your hands on the Despecialized Editions fellow fans. Then you can watch all those OT scenes in all their original glory.
I’m surprised more people don’t know about Project 4k77, 4k80, and 4k83. *Definitely* worth a look.
@@BrianBisetti I actually prefer the silver screen edition. It looks like it did when I watched it growing up. High def is less important than not seeing the special edition changes
@@SteveTK420 Projects 4K77, 80, and 83 are 4K scans of the original theatrical 35mm prints. You can have your cake and eat it too!
It wasn't called a new hope, it was called Star Wars
And it always will be. At least in my head
And will always be "Star Wars" to all OG fans...
It is always Star Wars to me, and always will be.
And yet it was named a new hope before empire released
@@noname-jt6kl No it wasn’t. It may have been called that in the brain of George Lucas, but it wasn’t on the screen. I remember. I was there.
I will see some of these again, because I still have the THX release of the original trilogy. I just need a VCR...
I always thought it was Palpatine saying “no”.
I thought the no in number 4 was later added. I was beginning to think I was going a bit crazy.
Both yub nub and the victory celebration songs go hard af.
I still have the original vhs tapes 😁
10 Star Wars moments you’ll never see again except for right now 😂
Aye, ive got ma dad's VHS of star wars before it was a new hope, its got a white saber for obi wan during the vader fight too, not even lucus himself claimed that he doesn't have a copy of this due to his many recuts
You would think that the fact that the original trilogy movies were massive successes would make it pretty clear that they were good enough as they were.
Unless you have a copy of the unedited OT..
I really had no issues with #1, after it was a busy joint..
I was an enormous fan of the original trilogy back in the day. I never expect to watch it again, since I don’t want to have my fond memories of it altered.
Bro it's still the same movie for 99% of it, it's not going to ruin it for you at all, get over it.
@@noname-jt6kl Sis, my memory is still intact, so I have no need to see the films again. I am not much of a movie fan anymore. I prefer live theatre. You might want to get over the idea that other people need to be like you.
I totally agree with Jules about the voice of of Boba Fett being swapped with Temura Morrison's voice
The actor who originally spoke Boba's line made him sound far more menacing
The rumor is Lucas called Morrison late at night while he was asleep to record the lines over the phone. Morrison wasn't fully awake and didn't quite get what was going on so thats why his lines sound so off.
George lucas was struggling with the limited technology at the time, but at least no one can touch him when it comes to world building.
Jules: What happened to your "one per list?"
Then your memory is wrong. None of that happened in the history of things that didn't happen. Ever.
In Jedi there's a mirrored scene involving Boba where his antenna is actually on the left side of the helmet instead of the right
You can still Sebastian Shaw's Anakin Force Ghost in the Star Wars Encyclopedia that I have! It predates not only the Prequel Trilogy but also the 1997 Remasters! Funny to say Kennedy had no source material to work from, isn't it?
"Star Wars Moments You'll Never See Again"
Me rewatching the movies: B]
Friends and family ask why I still have a vcr in the house.
I'm just here for Jules' end of video message
Maybe others won't but I will. Still have the original 80s VHS tapes and the double DVD releases they did where 1 DVD was the movie left unmodified on purpose.
I still own the CBS Fox VHS tape of "The Empire Strikes Back". I miss the original movies and their true intentions..
"A saga of rebellion...and romance!"
Most IMPRESSIVE XX
Ironically your number 10. Han shoots first, is also Star Wars... don't know if this is mentioned later I've just started watching but the sub title of A New Hope doesn't come until 1981... previously the movie was simply Star Wars.
Personally, I disagree with those who argue "Han shot first". Not because I agree with the change to this scene but because the statement implies that Greedo shot at all.
I actually like the victory celebration at the end of ROTJ. Change my mind.
Han did NOT shoot first; Han SHOT. Greedo never got a shot, let alone a Macklukey out in the original movie.
The part I find silliest of han shooting first is its painfully obvious Greedo is about to pull the trigger. I saw that when I was a kid seeing it back in original form. Hans not brutally killing Greedo for no reason its self defense
