Love your videos , I see this clay you need to fire in a kiln so if you don't have one what's the next best option ? It says on your website Butane torch not recommended ?
I'm finding the price is almost 4 times that of sterling silver. How do you price these beautiful pieces when completed. Personal question I know. I am thinking of going back into business Love this silver clay. Thanks, Wendy
Hi Lisa, How exactly do you fire a piece with a stone in it? I’m trying to find a video on it but I’m not sure if they actually show them firing it. If you have a video up, can you please recommend it to me? Thank you so much in advance! 🙏🏼♥️
It all depends on what kind of stone you are firing. Some stones can be fired open shelf, others need to be fired in carbon. Our Gemstone Firing Guide is a comprehensive list of stones - the temperatures they can be fired at, the hold time, if they can be torch fired, and if they require carbon or can be fired open shelf. You can find it here: www.cooltools.us/v/vspfiles/assets/images/Article-Gemstones_In_Metal_Clay.pdf
Wow! The possibilities will be endless! What about soldering? What if u didn't want to keep the ring adjustable? Could u connect the upper and lower "arms" with solder to make a specific size? Thank u!
Beautiful...thank you so much. Could a person press small stones or maybe Swarovski rhinestones in the clay. Also, where can I learn this art from the beginning?
Hi Rita, you cannot fire Swarovski crystals in a kiln. For all gemstones that can and cannot be fired in a kiln, check out our Gemstone Firing Guide: www.cooltools.us/v/vspfiles/assets/images/Article-Gemstones_In_Metal_Clay.pdf To learn everything about metal clay, including beginner steps (firing, tools and supplies needed, advice, etc), check out our Learning Center: www.cooltools.us/Learning-Center-s/2329.htm If you ever have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us at sales@cooltools.us or 888.478.5060. We are always happy to help beginners get started in metal clay!
I am curious, did you use a torch to fire this piece or did you place it in the kiln? I think I just answered my own question. This clay is not used with a torch. Am I correct?
After bending over the mandrel, Lisel tumbled it in a Loretone tumbler for about 2 hours and then polished it with polishing paper. Thanks for the question!
Hi Alex, the clay was fired in a kiln. If you would like to learn more about metal clay and the firing process please refer to our Learning Center. You can find it here: www.cooltools.us/Learning-Center-s/772.htm Hope this helps!
Hi, When you have left over silver broken peaces fire in to little balls . when do you add to your project wet clay, dry clay, before firing could you help me please
Hi Georgie, you can add the little balls to wet or dry clay. With dry clay, you would paste the balls on and with wet clay, you would push the balls in. Binding the clay together and sintering properly is important. Thank you for the question!
Hi Jeannie, PMC Flex will work. However, flex is fine silver meaning it is soft. Rings and bracelets often are made of sterling silver because of its extra strength. You'll also want to make sure that the gemstone you use can be fired using the firing schedule of PMC Flex. You can check out our gemstone firing guide here: www.cooltools.us/v/vspfiles/assets/images/Article-Gemstones_In_Metal_Clay.pdf Thanks for the question!
Hi Joanna, we use either the Evenheat Kingpin 88 or Paragon SC2 in our studio for firing. Both of these kilns are actually in stock and ready to ship. Hi, I love your work. I have always been concerned about stones breaking during firing, could you tell me what kind of stones you use? Or is there an information page of what precious or semi-precious stones could be fired with the clay, thank you in advance.
Hello, Lisel is using Cubic Zirconias from Cool Tools. These specifically are Fire Opal. The link below is a gemstone firing guide on which gemstones can be fired, for how long and at what temperature. Hope this helps! www.cooltools.us/v/vspfiles/assets/images/Article-Gemstones_In_Metal_Clay.pdf
@@YogiDreamer33 You can test if a piece is sintered by placing a drop of water on it. If the piece absorbs the water, it is not fully sintered. If the water beads up on the surface, you know it is sintered.
Hello, we asked Lisel your question and she replied: "Yes. I approach the project more intuitively, but that is a good way to think of it. Length plus overlap and then add some for shrinkage. EZ960 shrinks around 10%." Thanks for your question!
Hi... The ring in this video used appx 10 grams. We have two package sizes 25 and 50. This type of ring uses very little clay and still looks beautiful. Have a great day!!
Hi. I am new to this clay. Usually use PMC3. I made this ring and it ended up breaking. I fired it at 1675 for 2 hours. What do you think I did wrong? Thanks, Pam
Hi Pam, this problem is caused by the clay not sintering properly. There are a few ways to test your kiln and its firing temperature. This article should help you find a resolution: www.cooltools.us/v/vspfiles/assets/pdf/Sintering%20Metal%20Clay.pdf If you have any other questions please feel free to reach out to us!
I tested the kiln with the 1675 for 2 hours, 1700 for 1 hour and 1725 for 15 mins. They all failed the bend test. Any other suggestions? I read somewhere to do 1650 for 4 hours. Should I try this? And will the CZ used in this project survive that temperature for 4 hours? I really want to achieve this technique. Thanks for helping.
Hi Pam, if all three of your tests failed the bend test at the recommended time and temperature, then your kiln is firing cooler than what the controller is telling you. I would recommend that you check your kiln with a pyrometer to determine what the difference in temp you are having at the 1675 to 1725 degree range. In our Cool Tools studio, our Paragon SC2 kiln runs 30 degrees cooler at 1675 degrees, so when we fire EZ960, we set the kiln to 1705 degrees to compensate. I am very confident that you are experiencing something very similar. I am sending you a loaner pyrometer for you to test your kiln. Once you are aware of and satisfied with your kiln's firing temperature(s), you will be able to fire any and all metal clays to their recommended and proper temperatures. Another way to attack this issue is to fire at 1675 for 3 or 4 hours - we have many people that use this simple technique (firing for 3 to 4 hours is called a "soak") when they want to be absolutely sure they are getting a full and complete sintering - usually because they want to bend the metal after it has been fired in the kiln.
Hi Kimberly, Metal clay is made from powdered metal mixed with water and a natural substance called "methyl cellulose". Metal clay handles similar to traditional modeling clays, and, when dried, it is transformed into a solid object through a firing process. Metal clay must be fired at a much higher temperature and requires a torch or a kiln as compared to the lower temperature required for polymer clay. Thank you for your question. Have a great day!
So beautiful and innovative. You are a great teacher.

when drying do you leave on the coil roller and the tuff card? appox how long do you fire for

I like this video a lot, the material you call it clay is the same as silver? because you did not mould it, so how did you use silver?

I love this design. Can this be fired with a torch or does it have to be done in a kiln?
Hello, firing EZ960 with a torch is technically feasible, but we do not recommend this. Have a good day!
CoolToolsVideos -- so, what is the worst that could happen if I used a butane torch to fire the EZ960?
Is it possible to make it with phoenix silver clay? 🙏
Absolutely!
@cooltoolsvideos nice! Thank you! So it will not braek If fired and afrer bended, maybe is gona be more dificult to bend?

how much length would need to be added for overlap to each ring? It would be length of ring size + shrinkage + overlap? Correct?

when fired, what is the percentage of silver remaining in the clay?
Hi Marsha, when fired only the binders in the clay burn off. This creates a shrinkage rate of about 10-11%. Hope this helps!
