  • #JimbosGarage #Welding #MetalFabrication I had a friend ask me to make him a custom trash can for his house boat. This was a great aluminum welding project! I don't work with aluminum a lot so this was a nice change of pace.

    I work in a mainly aluminum fab shop in the cutting and drilling side of things. When cutting aluminum add wax to the blade, otherwise the chips will end up sticking to themselves and ruin a good blade. We get about a year's worth of production cutting out of a 24" chop saw blade, as long as we keep it waxed up.
    We then use the same wax for drilling, take a piece of the wax and add it to the bit, like you did with the bees wax on the flap disk. For the most part the only other lubricant we really use for Aluminum is WD-40. It doesn't work for most other metals, but it does wonderful on Aluminum.
    For finishing we use a hand wire brush and some maroon scotch bright. For the best finish when grinding we've found that if you leave a little of the weld raised up then finish with a 2 inch scotch bright wheel on a 90 degree die grinder. A large grinder you will easily start to dig into the base metal and leave divots. We use the same 2 inch wheel to deburr the cut edges.

    Jimbo, my daughter watched your video with me before dinner, and commented that the trash can needed wheels. Knowing that this goes on a house boat, I know this is not necessary. Just want you to know you have a new fan, and she loves your Viking mustache.

    Great job as usual, one of my favorite channels. My experience with wire feed speed is the same as yours. Slowing it down and letting some heat get into the part really seems to help. You might try a stainless brush in a grinder before welding, cup, tied wheel, doesn't matter. Just run the wire right down the area to be welded. It cuts that oxide layer off the surface and just makes the whole process work better. Welds light off easier, better penetration, the whole bit.

    Man you make a job more difficult welding vertical, as gravity plays it's part massively, on it's side those welds would be perfection and damn right easy for you. great job either way.

    Hi Jimbo. I love your channel. With respect, I cut sheets of aluminum on a regular basis. It's better to use a track saw, a non-ferrous blade, noise cancelling earbuds and a vacuum. I have videos on my channel that show this.

    Some circular saws allow for a vacuum attachment. May not stop ALL the chips but should stop most of the mess.

    Come up nice Jimbo, Im looking at the design and thinking a sunken(no pun intended!) depression around the handle so the top of the handle is flush with the lid top surface would make that bin a little more practical in a small space like a house boat.

    hey jimbo, how come everyone claims you cant weld through a long lead like mig because the material is too soft and to use a spool gun? i dont see you having any issues, have you ever had feed issues running aluminum like this?

    • @jadcb159
      @jadcb159 3 роки тому

      Would also be interested in his thoughts on this. I've been planning to buy a spool gun for the same reason, but I don't have a long lead at all, so...maybe it's not necessary?

    • @donsmith9081
      @donsmith9081 3 роки тому

      @@jadcb159 the lead can be longer or shorter. The wire still only runs thru the spool gun liner-which is very short.

    I always heard you could not weld aluminum with a MIG, and would need a spool gun. I have a Hobart MVP 210. The spool gun is awful. Is there a torch etc. that would let my welder aluminum weld with my MIG like you did in the video? Also seems like 4043 would be too soft to go through a MIG...

    • @hilltopmachineworks2131
      @hilltopmachineworks2131 3 роки тому

      You can do it. Just need a short lead (he was using a 8ft one) and try to keep it as straight as possible since the aluminum wire is like a spaghetti noddle. Also helps to push not pull the weld.
