Hi there👍I retired from catering last January at a young age of 64, so I took up woodwork as an hobby, and decided I like it. For Xmas my wife treated me to a makita drill/driver kit it is great. I am doing things such as bird boxes and so on. Your video on the clutch settings explaining the drill and screw settings is great thank you👍👍👍
I wondered what the clutch was meant to do, now I know.... thanks Shane, great tutorial (and good job on the house too... been following your owner builder series and it looks great!)
Thank you. I've been using a cordless drill (el cheapo) for at least 20 years, by what I call the "grip & hope" method, with varying results. You have just over filled my poor brain with many explanations for many of those results. Thank you.
Hello Shane, You mentioned the clutch on the cordless drill, this a phase I'd not heard before, in the UK and Europe it's known as a torque setting. It's the same thing just a different name for it. Also some people have a problem with drill bits coming lose and falling out of the chuck, I think the chuck may not be fully tightened. Something manufacturers don't tell you is turn the chuck clockwise and tighten till i won't tighten any more, then turn the chuck anticlockwise till you hear one click, the bit is then locked in place and will not fall out. To remove the drill bit turn anticlockwise as normal.
Hi Deborah.....hard to say without actually hearing it. Having said that, they do make a noise when stopping 👍 Maybe take it back to where you bought it and see what they say 👍 Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺

G'Day Shane. Very strange not to see part of your new home (not a house anymore). GREAT review of the drills. I recently purchased the DeWalt brushless drill and I REALLY like the performance and battery life. All good stuff and welcome back.
My drill (Bosch GSR 12V 15) doesn't make the clicking sound when I rotate the sleeve to insert my bit. I'm rotating so hard my hand i about to fall off. According to you there needs to me this sound and according to the manual as well. I wouldn't mind but I also can't put a screw in my bookshelf, it looks like it's doing something, but nothing happens. So I'm wondering if the bit is wrong? Are not all Bosch bits compatible with all Bosch drills? I asked the guy in the shop yesterday when I got it, but he probably just wanted to get rid of me so said yes. I really don't want to go back for a third time. What am I doing wrong?
Hi. Without seeing what you are doing it is hard for me to diagnose. As far as the bits go, they are all universal and fit into all drills. Sorry l couldn't be more helpful 👍
@@diyforknuckleheads Thanks for the quick reply. I think I found out I bought the wrong whatever they're called that come into the universal bit. The ones I bought look like a star, i.e. 6, whereas the screw looks like a plus, i.e. 4. I guess that means there's no grip. Although I don't even know who would need the star-shaped bit. I have a couple cordless for everything else lol

Thank you very much for the video. So easy for a layman to understand. I have one question. I see you insert a drill bit direct into the chuck of the drill. In what circumstances do you insert a chuck into the chuck of the drill before you attach a bit?
No such thing as a stupid question Ayesha.....just have the setting on drive...or drill mode....and then click the reverse button on the side of the handle.....good luck 👍🇦🇺😁

Wow very nice video. All explained to get you started. For someone like me who has never touched a power tool this is very helpful. Just got my Makita. Big Thank You.
Question!... Anyone else ever find that just as you're finishing drilling a screw into something, the drill sometimes whips your wrist around into a painful sprain? it's just happened me a few times and always felt like it could've gone way worse, so been making me kinda nervous lately. I realise i'm probably doing something stupid like just holding the button down a second too long, and need to time it better when letting go of the button or something , but if anyone has any pointers or Do's&Don'ts I might be overlooking would be great please And great video , Thanks
Thanks Joe. Try backing the clutch off a little mate and see how that goes. When you back the clutch off the clutch has less resistance when it comes up against something hard. Instead of continually trying the drive the screw in the clutch on the drill will slip taking off that arm breaking pressure.....hope that makes sense 👍

It is amazing how much technology has changed drills, especially the weight and the ergonomics involving drills.I have the Ryobi and a Ridgid Drill driver sets which are just great. The Ridgid set is a bit heavier, but both sets work extremely well. I recently came across a Craftsman beast of a drill which is corded on Offer Up. What made it different is that it had never been used according to the seller. I took a look at it and sure enough, the box was pretty deteriorated, but the tool was brand new! It must be 20 years old. I can't wait to try it out.
Hey there young bloke, how's it going for you lately, i hope really well. I got you're message and request from the big reveal vid and if i'm able to help you out i most certainly will Shane. Can't wait to hear back mate. Cheers

After going through multiple videos trying to understand this to no avail finally found a clear and simple explanation of the features and capabilities of these drills. Thank you.
What a great, clear video. I inherited a two models of Makita drills without manuals. I've made do for years just drilling and driving with no idea what the settings did and why the clutch slippage sounds meant. Now all the settings and the usages make sense and easily translate from one model to the next. I am excited about today's DIY project. Thanks, mate!
For sure ADAM. Hammer mode is for drilling into masonry products like brick, tile or concrete. Driving mode is for driving in screws and Drilling mode is used for drilling holes in timber and steel. Hope that helps. Cheers :-)
Just what I need Fantastic Tutorial. You make it interesting and informative. I just got a cordless drill to replace my 30 year old buddy and wasn't sure what all the functions were so this is a real gem.... Ta
This is an especially informative video for a senior who has never used this type of power equipment before. Thanks for sharing your expertise. Much appreciated.
Thankyou for making this video boss! Bought a cordless drill and had no way of understanding how all the function and mechanics worked because the manual was too complicated, this video was much better lol
Great video. Thanks for explaining it so clearly. I didn't know that the torque setting with the clutch was only relevant for the screw function. With my Dewalt, I believe I have to turn it counterclockwise until it clicks to firmly hold a drill bit then turn it clockwise for one click to lock it - and to release the drill bit, turn it clockwise to release the jaws. The instructions that came with the drill aren't very good so videos like yours help a lot.

Got yourself a score with that old Craftsman Gregg....let me know how she goes 👍👍

TC my Friend, Barry (Bazza Eng)
Thanks Barry. Yeah they're doing a Basic Skills Section in the magazine, hence the cordless drill vid. Cheers mate :-)
No worries at all Tom...glad you found the video useful mate 👍🇦🇺😁
Well, this is the first video detailing the functionality of a cordless drill which I understand. Many thanks for the post.
No worries at all John....glad it helped 👍😁🇦🇺
can you please tell me what each mode is used for hammer, driving and drilling ..
For sure ADAM. Hammer mode is for drilling into masonry products like brick, tile or concrete. Driving mode is for driving in screws and Drilling mode is used for drilling holes in timber and steel. Hope that helps. Cheers :-)
appreciate your help 👍, many thanks..
Thank you so much man. My partner just bought me my first drill and this was just what I needed. I’m slowly learning all things power tools 😊
Hi Hannah...well done on being the owner of a new drill! It's a great little tool. Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
Just what I need
Fantastic Tutorial. You make it interesting and informative.
I just got a cordless drill to replace my 30 year old buddy and wasn't sure what all the functions were so this is a real gem.... Ta
No worries Linda...glad to help and thanks for taking the time to leave me some feedback. Cheers 🙂
This is an especially informative video for a senior who has never used this type of power equipment before. Thanks for sharing your expertise. Much appreciated.
No worries at all Gerry...glad to help mate and thanks for the feedback👍😁
Thankyou for making this video boss! Bought a cordless drill and had no way of understanding how all the function and mechanics worked because the manual was too complicated, this video was much better lol
No worries....glad you found the video useful 👍👍👊😁
nice vid sir. i am about to change my drill. Just srewfixed a Titan reduced to 50 from a 100 and double batteries.
Thanks Ian and nice deal mate.
👍...Thanks JYTL....glad l could help 👍😁🇦🇺
I had my wife watch your video as you are more patient and seem to be able to explain this better than me.
Whatever you need to do Jeff 😂 Thank your wife for me for watching 👍😁
