Viewers: I said V6 instead of flat 6 when referring to the Porsche. Kind of a habit. My apologies. Mistakes happen. Hope you enjoy the other 18 mins of the video.
The phone is upside down during the stock readings and right side up during the custom readings...hence the much larger difference between the two meters at idle. You're welcome ;)
@@AMMO-NYC To be honest the main problem with the pressure differences between those devices is the measure set up. The iPhone app measure the sound in dB Z (with Z frequency weighting, used for "flat" frequency response from 10 kHz to 20 kHz) and the noise dosimeter measure it in dB A (with A frequency weighting, similar to human perception). Larry, on the right side of the app screen you can find a slider with letters to change that :) Some basic info can be found here: www.cirrusresearch.co.uk/blog/2011/08/what-are-a-c-z-frequency-weightings/. Wish you all happy detailing! :)
Man Larry this very well could be the perfect exhaust for this car!! Makes the R8 sound like a monster!! So great, and without drone etc, I can say from my own experience how key this is for long trips and coming home. Nicely done, Soul clearly does very cool work. Amazing.
I knew someone who talked up the open/closed exhaust they'd eventually get on their project car. I asked them what the practical point was: would it help them make more power or be more efficient? Gotta say, your video answered questions they didn't, and the sound YOU got out of your exhaust is almost worth no performance change lol. thanks for the videos as always Larry. Wish we'd see more like this in your newer retinue.
That is super cool. The car sounds amazing and the custom fabrication, wow! Had no idea you could control a valve from inside the car, very nice touch.
@@AMMO-NYC No it's not that bad, most people probably don't realise what it takes to make one of these videos. Thumbs up for actually admitting to the mistake, most youtubers wouldn't have replied to a comment like this
Awesome video! The exhaust note is gorgeous now Larry, well done to the guys at Soul for their fantastic design and craftsmanship. Please keep these non-detailing videos coming, they are just as interesting to watch as the rest of your content!
This is the most professional video I've seen on UA-cam. It would not look out of place on national t.v. It's clear you are investing money in your channel
I didn’t read all your comments to see if my observation was already mentioned but I did notice for your first dB test your phone was upside down. Could have reflected the variance in your last 2 tests as the phone mic was in a different position. Great video. I wish I could put something like that on my 300zx tt.
Wow you lucky bastard. Driving a nice mint manual R8 with a V8... much jelly. Also those guys at Soul are like true professionals. Such attention to detail. I wonder how much did this procedure cost?
I got a lot of time for the ammo crest on the exhaust that’s my kind of love and passion and love the custom exhaust tips especially being black........ that sound Damn!
Was going to comment similar stuff. Custom exhaust or straight piping R8 on some local exhaust shop would usually be one way to make car look / sound half assed tuning car. But this is just insane. Even that noncoated AMMO logo is insanely sweet and attention to purging pipes with argon while welding.. just wow.
Love it when hard work pays off and you can make your dreams come true!... I would say you have earned it just from your dedication n pride you put into your love for cars... keep doing videos on your own terms as we can all learn for your vast experience... Thx
Larry is such a nerd and I love it! Most Rubes on UA-cam wouldn't use a decibel meter and professional sound recorder for a new exhaust. Also Love the exhaust work but does anybody else think the cut out valve setup is unnecessarily complicated? Garage door opener, pickup a signal to an electronic controller which diverts some vacuum from the vacuum lines?? That's almost Rube Goldberg in design. I assume there's not an easier way to integrate?
Larry, the exhaust sounds great! ...and the car looks awesome as always. Understanding that the video was about the exhaust upgrade, in hindsight, you should've also gotten a baseline for horsepower numbers before and after the upgrade...because it is highly likely that you will receive an additional increase in either torque or horsepower...possibly both if the car is properly tuned to better manage the airflow modifications that you are doing...
Beautifully put together! That Porsche looked familiar then I realized it was at the TopGear Imports car meet in NJ! Would have been awesome to see you there!
As always, I always enjoy watching and learning from your videos! Always includes the extra information I need if i get stumped on something. Great work as always!
Love the R8.. and the valve idea for tuning the sound is a great idea. The exhaust on my car is great with the silencer on it but too loud through the neighborhood wide open. Man that new exhaust looks clean af and 20 pounds lighter! That's awesome. Sounding great man wide open sounds SO mean :D
Thanks for a great video, I enjoy every single one you make! You have such a passion for cars and it's contagious in all the right ways, keep up the good work!
Just to clarify for anyone who cares. The math Larry put up for the sound measurements is for sound power or sound intensity, where increases of 10 dB are factors of 10 times power, 10*log. But the sound level meters he used measure sound pressure, not sound intensity. Sound pressure is 20 dB for a 10 times increase in pressure, 20*log. eg: 1 pascal = 94 dB, 10 pascal = 104 dB, 100 pascal = 124 dB. Also, the blue sound level meter is measuring dBA, not dB. dBA is what humans hear. dB or dBZ is the true or unweighted sound pressure level. Humans (and most mammals) don't hear frequencies outside of their speech spectrum well, dBA takes this into account.
The dB meters might have read differently because of different decibel weighting scales and differences in microphones themselves. Also the integration into the stock door opener with an RF receiver is so satisfying for my OEM OCD 😄
I think that the difference for the readings of the sound meters is that the green one uses dBA, which uses another weighting for sound, more compatible with human hearing. The usual dB does not account that we are more sensible to the mid-low frequencies (up to approx 1000Hz)
With OEM exhaust your phone was up side down. The mic was up picking up the sound from the air. In the test with the SOUL exhaust the mic was down and picking up the vibrations from the ground with the valve open. That's probably why it was 15dB louder at idle
Nice modern hair cut Larry. Have you thought about asking your Barber for a [Hard part] next time? Its where they use the straight razor to cut a thin part line which looks fresh AF.
This is a truly amazing episode. I’ve wanted this setup for such a long time for my f80 M3 but none of the exhaust I’ve tried give me what I wanted. I’ve got a Dinan muffler waiting for me in the garage but if that doesn’t pass the test I might go see the SOUL people!
I mean if u love cars and have not yet subscribed what are you doing. Much love from georgia maybe one day i will get some additional payment and will detail my car with your products even if it is a toyota aqua. Keep up the best content

A slip of the tongue, wont hold it against the best detailer on UA-cam! You know cars!
Sounds like a beast now, Larry! What does this particular valved exhaust cost for the R8 V8?
16:31... It's cool. We should all know that your last car was a 911 and you're very familiar with it's engine.
AMMO NYC you ruined it for me :P
This is by far the best channel/presenter on UA-cam. Always provides detailed information and you can clearly see his passion. Keep up the great work!
