I saw Andy twice, including a Sydney gig not too long before his very sad passing. At the end of said gig, a young bloke in the crowd, near the front, had everyone almost in tears when he told his short story with Andy, the-non Jon band and the whole crowd listening! In a nutshell and because I had trouble hearing the whole story, he had been going through stuff in his life and had been told to go and see a very unique and special guitarist. He had never heard of Gang'a and was so blown away by Andy Gill's playing, that he became very emotional as he spoke directly to Andy at the end of the encore. There must've been at least 1000 fans there, it sounded like his voice was breaking, if in fact he wasn't tearful and everyone, no one more so than Andy himself, was really moved and touched by his reaction to a guitar great, fearless in his determination to play HIS way. I'm thankful that the gang can still get together and I think this guy did a reasonable job with the axe work. Andy isn't an easy act to follow. I hope that he is somehow rocking out with them, either hidden from our eyes on stage or up above!
Yes, I saw them two years ago at New-Waves-Day in Oberhausen, Germany, the band that was playing for a while as Gang of Four. And Andy died shortly thereafter.
Funny, but I saw the stand-in Gang of Four lineup with Andy Gill, RIP, a couple of times and that lead singer also smashed a microwave. They really should use one of those store dummies.
I agree, what a treat that was. I only wish they had done Essence Rare. Hugo is a Facebook friend of mine as he lives in Massachusetts. I will rag on him lol
it still kills me when they reunited in 05 and i had the opportunity to see them - but in phx they cancelled due to LOW TICKET sales. shameful - the 5th largest city in the country couldn't come out for one of the most important and influential bands of their era.
I saw them play what was supposed to be their farewell show back in '84 [ish]. At that time, they were the best live band of their generation. But Gang of Four were not Gang of Four without Jon King, and they certainly aren't Gang of Four without Andy Gill.
You might be surprised. Check out the lineup for the upcoming Darker Waves in Huntington Beach, I am flying cross country for that. Chameleons and Clan of xymox as well as many other greats
@@dee_seejay They’re both not truly GoF imo. If Keith died and the Stones continued it wouldn’t be the Stones to me for example. Same with GoF. Their songs and sound are great even with a cover band.
@@dee_seejay I’m not familiar with Magazines catalog to compare. Even though the Stones were always a two guitar group, the defining riffs to me were Keith’s rhythm, even when Taylor’s lead provided the best version of them. When I think of GoF the first thing that comes to mind is the guitar sound, not the songs. I couldn’t tell you who wrote which song. The distinctive guitar sound what I was attracted to. David Gilmour’s style is distinctive. If Floyd had gotten back together minus Gilmour, but replaced him with an incredible player, it might be a great band, but it wouldn’t be Floyd to me. This version of GoF may be great live and be worthy, but it wouldn’t be GoF to me. After Picasso died, someone who painted like him isn’t Picasso. Gill’s sound was the defining factor in GoF to me. Other’s may hear differently. U2’s the Edge is similar to me. A unique sound that, if he were replaced, no matter how good they sounded, wouldn’t be U2 anymore.
Sad to see one of the most creative and unique bands turn into a nostalgia act. Pajo is a great guitarist but a lot of the songs feel slower and lacking in energy. To Hell With Poverty still sounds great though
...and what was YOUR glowing contribution to Post-Punk? Or ANYTHING for that matter? I would rather see these bands relive past glories than 95% of the garbage passing for Popular Music these days. What a spiteful, hateful thing to say about a band who made a inspiring contribution to the culture. Jeez! 😡

This dude, David Pajo, is a great guitarist. His work in Slint was magnificent.
So. True.
Love Gang of Four. RIP Andy.

@@SusieDavidsonBrookl Awesome!
Gang of 1, at least this is gang of 2
LOVE this...thanks for posting!!
andy gill is sorely missed…but so good regardless. thank you for keeping these songs alive! anthrax?!?!
❤ jon, hugo, sara and david!
I would have liked to hear Essence Rare but otherwise, no complaints.
The Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Consumer Electronics has been notified. You, Mr. King, are on notice!

Loved this! My favorite performance of the day! Wish the set could have been longer. Thanks for posting!

This was one of my favorite sets at CWF! I was front row and love my screams! Loved the back-up singers!!! ❤
Keeping our beloved music alive...❤
Do they ever play Is It Love live? Haven’t been able to find a recording. They were incredible at Cruel World!
There I am in the pit 0:26

Sounds pretty good compared to the usual sh*t that emanates from these modern festival stage settings

Love this band, but is it Sun Ra?
Without Andy it’s more of a Gang of Four tribute band because Andy was the defining sound.

He was incredibly important. But without hugo, dave Allen and Sara Lee. His playing would have sounded like random noises
I like when the security guard starts freaking out 16:16
What is the song playing in the background just before the band starts? Bugging me.
Found it! Valley of the dolls (go the Gang of Four) by Generation X
Gang of Four are the most NPC variety of Leftist in existence but they do crank out some great jams.
nice gloves
So very sorry. Those are my EMF blocking gloves and I was so into it. Had no clue that they interfered with the video a bit here and there.
@@SusieDavidsonBrookl great video ! gloves are fine :)
@@scaremeister Well not really, but I will be conscious of those EMF blocking gloves from now on when filming!
No Gang of Four without Andy Gill.
Jon and Hugo are as much gang of four as Andy was

who are they?
The world's most famous Marxist post-punk band. Andy Gill is sorely missed.

Flea, of the Chili Peppers, says that the Edge of U2 completely stole Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill's style...Flea was right!
Been going 30 years too long in the tooth.

Is the guitar supposed to sound out of tune?
Yes
Yes, distortion is part of their package. And it is great.
Listen to Andy Gill’s playing it. Much better.
As Andy himself put it, he set up his sound so that '...the guitar struggled to be heard".
Having said that, let me say that he was perfectly in tune.
You are out of tune

You are? Not sure if I’d want to be sharing that.
Gang of One? Limp tribute act in reality.
Waaaah!😢
Gang of One was 2012 - 2020, but thanks for playing...
