This story wouldn't have been done justice if it had been made into a two hour feature length film. I really am glad that it was made into a T.V. series.
Did anyone else get to the end of episode 10 and try not to cry but then cried a lot when it shows the part with Mr. and Mrs. Dudley? No, just me, okay ;~;
@Henry Silman red cake? It was a brown cake with red frosting, and they were not in hill house. It looks nothing like hill house, and the window isn't the red room window. The director said he thought of putting the window in the backround but decided against it
The reason why I enjoyed The Haunting of Hill House, is because it did a fantastic job building up suspense and atmosphere. I've seen too many recently made horror based shows and films where either they relied way too much on jumpscares (the kind that just keep coming until you're so used to it, you have the reaction equivalent to that of a boiled potato), or they take too long building up the atmosphere (you could have probably taken a nap for 5 hours, woken up, and it would still be building), or they have five different plots and you end up asking yourself, "wait...which movie am I watching?" Haunting of Hill House knew exactly when to hit you. It knew exactly when and where to turn up the suspense. I haven't read the book, but I really want to now.
The book is completely different. Shirley and Steven don't exist, and Eleanor, Theodora, and Luke aren't related in any way. That's just *some* of the difference
It was just brilliant in so many ways ... the script , Shirley Jackson’s story was taken from the page and made into a ‘true to her words ‘ wonderful production on so many different levels . The high standard in camera work , lighting , sound production , costume , design , make up ,acting and the originality and imaginative direction of mike Flannagan just brought it all together . The pace of the editing dared to go so slow at times when normally you would see fast cuts to build up with the intensity of the music score . Less is more and therefore the audience are taken on a journey back and forth in time which normally would be confusing but with a slight subtle change at times , a slight atmosphere change, maybe done in the grade ,it didn’t feel clunky and the audience were comfortably taken along with the cast . No glaring hints to put the audience ahead . You are in real time so when those terrifying moments come you are as much in the dark as everyone else and jump just as high . Yes, I think I really liked this .....
Shirley Jackson is one of my favorite authors and her book "the Haunting of Hill House" is my all-time favorite horror story. Masterfully written with the story coming full circle as the first sentence and last sentence resonate together and leave the reader disheartened and sad for the main character. Because of this, I was reluctant to watch the Netflix series, knowing that they might not portray it right. Thank you for assuaging my fears. I will definitely be watching this show!
I've have to say it Jack this was excellent and heartfelt at the same time. I definitely felt the respect and admiration you have for the series as a whole and I one hundred percent agree with you it doesn't get any better when it comes to horror cinema. Keep up the great work I love seeing this type of video's and you do a wonderful job of presenting them!!
Excellent video and different from the rest of the "Top 5" videos about Hill House I've seen so far. One reason I'd add that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere yet is "The Power of Tale-Telling and Imagination". Notice that in many parts of the series, the director uses something as simple as a story told by a character (which is never actually shown, hence the use of the imagination of the audience) to build the tension up and create that spooky feeling that remains latent throughout the whole episode, leaving you on the edge of your seat waiting for a jumpscare to appear, which never happens in the end. Some examples are the woman in the first episode talking about her husband who died in a car accident, or the blind guy in Luke's episode telling his story in the support group, or the little girl in Theo's episode talking about the Smiley Man. I found that very fascinating and I think it is kind of a homage to horror literature in some way.
I really liked this Netflix version, but please, if you haven't already, read the book. It's my all-time favorite ghost story. I've read it many times over the last 50 years, and it will have you looking over your shoulder for days afterward. When I taught Freshman Comp and "The Lottery" was part of our assigned readings, I'd read excerpts from HHH. I once had a student email me and tell me that I was "going to be judged for teaching about the occult." I don't even believe in the occult so I don't know how I could teach about it. Other students would tell me they wanted to go out and find a copy.
I certainly want to find a copy of Ms. Jacksons' book and read it, even more so, after reading your comment. As far as being "judged", IMO, God, would probably thank you for the referral ;). A good story is a good story. Jack, as usual, you did a marvelous job on the video. I agree with your comments. I can't wait for the next installment of HHH. I hope it is as good as the Crain family story. It will be interesting to see how they utilize the ghosts.
This was a home-schooled student, and I wanted to ask her why she didn't just go to some local religious college instead of a public school. I also told her that I felt like my students were old enough to differentiate between fantasy and reality. It's funny, because the first time I read this book, it was out loud at a slumber party with a bunch of girls I went to church with!
Well, the book is different. More subtle, and the characters, while having the same names, are not related and are grown. I don't want to give too much away, but it's a psychological thriller more than a ghost story. I nearly always like the book better than the movie, so it depends on the person, I guess.
I know you warned us about spoilers but I watched your video to see if the show was worth watching. Far from spoiling it for me, you've made me hugely excited about watching the series. I love horror but I became very disenchanted with the genre because there has been so much dross. But in recent years I think there has been a bit of a renaissance. Films like The Babadook and It Follows that don't rely on cheap jump scares and intelligent, well produced shows like Channel Zero and Stranger Things have started to make me love it all anew. I'm watching Hill House tonight, maybe in one sitting!
Great video! Jack, I love your genuine interest, dare I say obsession with horror of all kinds. Makes for amazing videos from you that aren’t just made because of the hype. You truly see and understand why HOHH is so great and why we needed this series so badly!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This video made me want to stand up and cheer, I never know how to explain why Haunting of Hill House why it’s the most fantastic horror experience, but you summed it up perfectly! I love your videos, keep doing what your doing!
Thank you for doing an episode on The Haunting Of Hill House. I love this show and I love this channel. So it is basically two of my most favourite things put together 😍
I liked everything about this series besides the ending that was a bit too heartwarming for my tastes, but idk, a scary cliffhanger might have disappointed me more. Anyway, 10/10 series.
i really want a season two that shows us more of joey's past and somehow connects it to hill house. they should have her be a secret descendant of the hills and when she finds out, she goes to the house only to have the same "curse" put on her so she runs to the crains for help or something like that. i just really hoped to see and learn more about her tbh
Nell: what is your favorite pudding? Luke: ummmm it's rice Nell: noooo, it's chocolate vanilla chocolate pudding! Luke: no, it's rice now. Nell: you have to tell me these kinds of things, Luke... Luke: I am telling you now! Favorite moment of the show
Never even heard about this series but after the way that it was described here it's just the kind of thing that I might get into cause like he said sometimes our own psychological demons can make the best horror
The Haunting of Hill house is absolute TV and horror perfection. Always had a love/hate relationship with those, however they are the simplest depiction of human feelings and struggles.
@Jess Hanks honestly, my dude. It seems like people have forgotten what horror is. And all this hype about this mini series sounds like people were paid to give positive reviews. I can get people like campy, low-grade entertainment (I enjoy sharknado and all of its sequels) but to call this horror is to say Titanic was a rom com.
With Number 3 - Hold On.... This version bares little resemblance to the actual novel and has taken a lot of liberties. The show is fantastic and I love it. But don't compare this show to Jackson's novel, it's far removed from the book. The original 1963 movie is far closer to the book so don't discount it, it carries off the 'unseen menace' idea, central to the novel, far better than this show. It's almost as if the makers wanted to attach the Jackson/Hill House name in order to ensure people, who know the novel and original film, would watch and accept the fact this is not what 'we' were expecting.... As I say, I loved it and agree with much of what you're saying, But 'Shirley Jackson's - The Haunting of Hill House' it isn't. (And let's not even mention the 1999 travesty! truly awful)
There was however a sign that there would be a season 1. The mother looked at Steve as if she was still unsatisfied. So, that gives it away. She's coming back. Also, the Dudleys have a bigger story to tell. Also, the characters in the house before the Crain family were not elabaortely explained, so they will most likely be elaborated upon
The dudley don't. It showed them growing old together and dying at hill house. And the characters before the Crain's were all explained, and all of the ghosts were identified. All of them. You really didn't pay attention
Something as great as The Hauting of Hill House is done a huge disservice by using it as an excuse to air out choice pieces of horror genre snobbery, calling out other productions that have nothing to do with this. Very unnecessary.
I wish, wish, WISH he would follow this up with a series inspired by The Legend of Hell House, or more accurately, the novel Hell House. By Richard Matheson. I'd love seeing what they could do with it in 10 episodes...
I’m sorry, but just to dismiss the Shirley Jackson masterpiece of the supernatural and the original 1963 movie (which influenced many famous movie directors) in a couple of condescending throw away lines is pretty insulting.
Lmao, it was 1963. This is a new show, and I know you people love tradition and whatever, but new things have to happen at some point. It wasn't meant to be an insult. I it was just a new take on an old book.
Am I the only one that thought this show was more of a slow dull drama than anything related to horror? And before my opinion is turned into me being a fan of the jump scare genre as my favorite brand of horror, no, it's not. But this show could have used some form of terror other than drab ghosts in the background. Sure, the storytelling was superb and whatever, but horror it was not...
It may well be. But so was Shirley Jackson's novel (she also gave us the classic short story "The Lottery" as well as the novel WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE CASTLE which I actually cherish even more than the other two). I have never seen the series because I learned long ago not to watch dramatizations or adaptations or reimaginings of books I have loved since they will never be as good as what the author and my imagination as inspired by their prose and/or poetry came up with.
Lmao that's a biiiiiig assumption that all books in the world are automatically going to be better than all movie adaptations on them. Looks like you are missing a lot. Trust me, the TV show is BETTER than the book. But if you want to go back into your cave or whatever, fine by me
Anyone seen the movie the haunting with catherine zeta jones i feel like that film and haunting of hill house has far too many similarities to be a coincidence
Kerri Mccarroll it’s based off the same source material, Shirley Jackson’s story so yeah, similarities only put into a family vs strangers meeting at the home.
I saw another video commenting on Luke's cake. Red is the color that connects the family to the House (hello, the "Red Room"), it can, in a certain way, represents Evil or being lost. And how did the show end? With a red cake! Red! So people think that there's no happy end for the Crane Family. This is very sad and makes me fell so worry about Luke... He and Nell have been through so much, being the youngest...
The red room is the only thing that was red in the house. Also, the director said he thought about making the window in the back the red room window but decided against it because he wanted the show to have closure. the shows over and had a happy ending. Sorry to disappoint
I think the Haunting of Hill House was overrated (good, but not perfect). But I think it mixed the soap opera drama (which is often seen as more accepted and main stream), with the less respected horror genre.
I tried, kept coming back, but all I found in Hill House is a cure for insomnia. There's a few creepy scenes, but most of the jump "scares" fall flat. The kids do a fine job, but grown up they're mostly distant and detached. I get it, it's a broken family, but what we get of their childhoods isn't enough to give me a reason to care about a bunch of brooding adults. I've seen enough of that in real life.
You seem like the type to nitpick everything and nothing is ever good enough for you. I think you need to work on that or else you will anger and lose a lot of people
@@harmonious_choir LOL! There's many movies and TV shows that I enjoy, especially horror. This just isn't one of them. Perhaps you should stop making wild accusations about complete strangers and learn to live with the sober fact that not everyone is going to like the same things you do.
@@rpgspree you come of as really confrontational. It's not just my opinion, it's your attitude. There are ways you could have said that, that weren't so passive aggressive
@@harmonious_choir I wasn't being aggressive. Try rereading your first reply. "You seem like the type to nitpick everything and nothing is ever good enough for you." That's hardly a cordial approach. You shouldn't be so quick to judge others either.
Im sorry but I just LOVE horror, all horror from suspense to splatter and when i read this show was just like the ultimate and was scaring people half to death I rushed to watch......... Well to be honest, i sat through the 1st 2 episodes and part of the 3rd and my god was I bored to death!! Only thing I found "so scary" was the over use of constant jump scares and, again im sorry, but over using jump scares doesnt make a show itself scary. But thats just my opinion as many people do find that kind of stuff really scary. I just prefer a real scary storyline myself over a bunch of jump scares.
Juliett 1313 This show barely had any jump scares. There are maybe 4 or 5 in the entire series. If anything, it tried to hide all the scary stuff in the background, if you pay attention.
Check out some Easter Eggs you may have missed while watching The Haunting Of Hill House -> ua-cam.com/video/jfvdqr19mmk/v-deo.html
Yo love your vids keep it up😀👍👏👏
Thanks Jack. You also clarified what Hill House everyone is talking about! I wasn't sure before.✌💯
This story wouldn't have been done justice if it had been made into a two hour feature length film. I really am glad that it was made into a T.V. series.
Yeah and each episode is super long too
Did anyone else get to the end of episode 10 and try not to cry but then cried a lot when it shows the part with Mr. and Mrs. Dudley? No, just me, okay ;~;
already caught me on episode 5. came for the spooks, but what i got was feels. poor nell
That part of the episode was my breaking point
No, you were not the only one

Luke's "ghost" reminded me of the gentleman from Buffy the vampire slayer, also bent neck lady made me so very sad
He reminded me of the one from The Conjuring... forgot his name
The crooked man...that’s it
I absolutely love love love this. Its TV at his finest!! Not been so caught up in a show for a long long time but this has me hooked!
Right
The haunting of hill house made me cry tears if fear, sadness and joy. I loved every character and I loved the setting.
I wish this one could have gone on and on. I am in love with The Haunting of Hill House.
I sobbed like a baby episode 5 and 10 like goddamn
This is such a good show.
Amazing.
Lit favorite series.
I binged it in one night
I did too!!

'The Haunting of Hill House' truly did not get enough credit for what a true masterpiece it was. at that more than anything, bothers me
Excellent video and different from the rest of the "Top 5" videos about Hill House I've seen so far.

Great video! Jack, I love your genuine interest, dare I say obsession with horror of all kinds. Makes for amazing videos from you that aren’t just made because of the hype. You truly see and understand why HOHH is so great and why we needed this series so badly!
Bly Manor was extremely good. I loved the psychological aspect, and the lady of the lake was creepy.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This video made me want to stand up and cheer, I never know how to explain why Haunting of Hill House why it’s the most fantastic horror experience, but you summed it up perfectly! I love your videos, keep doing what your doing!
LOVE The Haunting of Hill House
us too
I'm obsessed with this show. I haven't seen anything really scary in a while but this one got me!
you're well informed about this subject matter, and I loved the facts you pull in the bag good job :)
I cried more than being scared
such a great series so far
I've only found you guys recently, but damn, I love you guys - really. thnx
Thank you for doing an episode on The Haunting Of Hill House. I love this show and I love this channel. So it is basically two of my most favourite things put together 😍
4 years later...it is STILL horror perfection.
Once again mate another scary one. Shiver me timbers. Governor you know how to scare people. Good on you mate !!!!!
Really was masterfully constructed, and executed flawlessly. Great story, great characters. Ran the gamut of emotions, too.
This is the first of your videos I've seen and your breakdown is almost academic in its precision. Nice.

Just finished watching this, for the second time. Absolutely loved this show, can't wait for season 2.
Thank you for another great video I loved both the show and the book.
Nell: what is your favorite pudding?
Luke: ummmm it's rice
Nell: noooo, it's chocolate vanilla chocolate pudding!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SERIES!! I'M NOT INTO A BUNCH OF HYPE STUFF EITHER BUT I REALLY LOVED THIS!!!
The original version in B&W directed by Robert Wise is amazing.
I think I'll give it a try ... looks so awesome!

You are selling me on this show Mr Finch.
Awesome music with an awesome host.

Oculus is one of the finest horror movies ever made. The Haunting of Hill House is the BEST horror series of all time.
Now I usually hate horror stuff but I like this because it had life lessons and messages to take heed of!
I can't wait for thanksgiving.
The netflix show is super loosely based on the book. It’s really it’s own beast mike really changed a lot.
Hey I love Hush
Is anyone gonna point out the background music is from silent hill 2?
Yeah not a great choice on his part. Should have been the theme from what he is actually talking about.
Hello Awesome Jack
My gripe with that show was it was more about drama than actual horror... Not to mention the horrendous acting.
More Lucy, less Guy with Beard
I don't think hill house is that scary. The story as a whole is just amazing.
It's not hard to outdo Stranger things... the show isn't that great.
I am into my 1 episode of hohh series and very much excited of everyone comments..

Love u guys
Oops missed the last Easter egg - his cake was red - he’s still in the red room?

Completely unrelated to the topic material. Silent hill 2 apparently

The original Haunting was truly amazing.
Yes that version was closer to the book, but tbh the TV show was better in general

Was I the only one that wasn't scared while watching this?
The show was amazing! but the acting was REAAAAALLLY bad in a lot of scenes.

Kerri Mccarroll it’s based off the same source material, Shirley Jackson’s story so yeah, similarities only put into a family vs strangers meeting at the home.
🤦♀️They are both based on the same book
Great show, but horror has a sad ending. The show is a gothic drama
I thought the original movie was great
Not first
I didn't find this show scary at all.I just laughed a lot at the jumpscares and stuff.
I think you need to work on that or else you will anger and lose a lot of people
No offense
You shouldn't be so quick to judge others either.
this show was literally so slow and boring
If anything, it tried to hide all the scary stuff in the background, if you pay attention.
jebus02134 yes, you have to look in the backgrounds throughout every episode. You’ll find scary things, that you didn’t really notice.
@@stephanienelson8560 lmao no. There are way more than that
@@stephanienelson8560 btw you said you didn't watch the whole series so you must have lied in there somewhere.
@@harmonious_choir I have watched the entire series. Where is this coming from? I never said that I didn't...
