@@josephbolognone6014 I don't agree, Joseph. Looking at the title I assumed it was clickbait and Piper was being genuinely humorous, but watching the video changed my mind. There's no doubt by the end that he was pleading with them to take seriously the convictions that "make him cry," and the audience isn't getting it.
@@BooRadleyTube I feel like a lot of that comes from modern day churches. The pastor often starts off the sermon with like a joke, and then gets into a story about his life that eventually ties into a sermon (not always bad, but it is bad if that happens every single Sunday). It happens so often that that's what people are expecting when someone goes up to preach, but that's just a modern idea that's setup to keep the audience intact. If you look at the sermon on the mount, Jesus didn't start with some joke. Assuming the sermon is a word-for-word transcription. Even if it was just the general idea, Jesus jumped right into the deep end of the topics at hand, not some humorous story to get the audience laughing. Anyway, that's my two cents.
Reminds me of a twilight zone episode - when a comedian was crying and begging the audience to stop laughing at him in his routine. Every time he did that, they guffawed harder. This is exactly the same...
You couldn’t see the humor in his delivery? Piper even provided clear evidence through his very words that he is not empathetic in general. No human can ever “live up” to these “generals of the cloth” and their “righteous ramblings” as inspirational as they may come across. We are all God Damned sinners. We are all subject to REALITY and consequence. You stand in front of a crowd of flesh… you’d better be on your game, because everyone wants SUBSTANCE.
Just for a bit of context, his turn was switched with a comedian last second, so the audience doesnt know that he is actually a sermon and the things he said are funny like “i m a sinner” and “i want expecting laughter” 😂😂
@@sillythygoose except he, John Piper, and many others have gone on record saying it's not true and that the speaker before him was serious and he was the "keynote speaker" meaning people know who he is and we more than likely there to see him partly
People keep saying that he was switched with a comedian. I don’t know if this is true or not but that’s like someone ordering a cheeseburger and instead getting a dead fish in a bun and they gobble it up like it’s delicious. If someone is that clueless then they have a problem. Here we have an entire audience of people (supposedly intelligent people) who think this is hilarious.
This is tremendous, Piper shows he understands the psychology of counseling and the psychology of the fallen human species. It was a very clever and insightful talk while being transparent about being the chief of sinners. I love it.
I legitimately thought this was fake, that a laugh track was added until he mentioned the laughing towards the end. I’m in disbelief, the moment was completely lost on them.
This is very sad, he’s being honest with them, admitting sin etc... and they continue to laugh at him Piper is a man of God who deserves respect and a listening ear and a closed mouth from the audience!!!
There is an *extremely important* side story to this that for some reason, the poster of this video did not mention. John Piper was doing this speech at a conference with *multiple* speakers. There was an _actual comedian_ who was scheduled to give his performance during this particular time slot. All of this was on the agenda, so people who attended were _expecting_ to see a comedian at this particular time. But due to a scheduling conflict, the comedian asked to have his time slot switched and the event promoter said fine, so they switched the comedian's time slot with John's. The problem is that they never informed the audience of this switch, so when the time came for the comedian to come on stage, it was actually John Piper but no MC came on to let the crowd know. So the crowd wasn't actually being rude or disrespectful, they genuinely thought that he was a comedian.
I appreciated this honesty from a man I rarely see in that light. If leaders were all more open with their weaknesses, how much healthier would the church be? It's how you can be a genuine servant, and also how to not become a pharisee.
It’s interesting that I listen to John in this situation and all I can think about is how these are things that I struggle with at 28 years old. a guy like John piper confesses and talks about these things in the open to so many people and it encourages me and blesses me and I feel humbled and broken. I Want change in my life and the need to see Christ as king and all these people can do is laugh?
Not at all. The agenda listed his time slot as a comedy routine by mistake. It’s sad to me that these people can’t discern the difference from comedy and what he is saying.
@@PJErvin That is the irony, he was praising them for their discernment and perceptiveness, yet they weren't discerning that he wasn't joking. He was being vulnerable.
I just got back from the AACC conference this year. Funny that this popped up in the algorithm. there are a lot of different takes why the audience laughed. And I think each person may have laughed for their own and multiple reasons. Yes, we are exhausted, it is A LOT to take in. I don't doubt people were loopy and sleep-deprived and burnt out. And sometimes there are comedians and funny speakers in the line-up. My take is that at the start his facial expressions are incongruent. He starts the first 40 seconds self-deprecating humorously but switches to serious with a bit of a frown but continues to self-deprecate and half smile. Another reaction , and this is mine, is that many know John Piper and the worm theology and self-flagellating feel of his messages and the laughter is a way of saying Bro, you don't have to crucify yourself and take yourself so seriously. Lighten up, laugh a little. Give yourself some grace and rest in God's forgiveness. At worst it came across as manipulative and insincere. For him this may be a very vulnerable moment and uncharted territory in his circles but for counselors, we hear this every day all day. 2:02 - 2:26 was genuinely sad. His worst fears were realized.
Well put, always seems weird when a preacher drones on deep diving their weaknesses. Comes off as self absorbed in a self flagellating way. It was like he was overthinking his audience and trying to stay three steps ahead of their ‘psychoanalysis’. He even said at the end he was trying to get them to receive his message. It’s like bro, just share the message, God causes the growth.
It was a misunderstanding. A comedian was scheduled to be up during this time slot but it got switched around, and the audience was primed to laugh at what the speaker at the time would be saying. No one knew what was going on until it was too late and he’d already given his sermon
I know you mean well, but it’s sad how people are so quick to judge without getting the full context of a story. This pastor had his time slot switched last minute with a comedian so the audience thought he was a comedian doing a dead-pan routine.
What happened is that there was an agenda mixup, and his slot was listed as a stand up comedy routine. So they thought he was the comedian and that this was a comedy routine, not a sermon, thus they were already primed to laugh.
You've commented this a bunch of times on this video, but I doubt you have proof that this is the case. There is no evidence that there was supposed to be a comedy routine in his place. John Piper is a well known theologian who has 1 million followers on twitter and his own extensive wikipedia page. I'd bet almost every Christian counsellor in that room knew exactly who he was. @@casskayecars Where? I saw the same instagram post, and came here for the full video like you, but even in interviews with Piper from as recently as 2019, he seems to have no idea why he got that reaction. And a deep dive on Google isn't turning up anything about a comedian.
Since nobody else can figure it out, the reason people were laughing was because of his inflections, as in the meter of his speech. He naturally talks in a way a person would when they're letting on that they're teasing. I would have been laughing too!
@@lilchristuten7568 The speech was funny. Piper should have realized it was funny. All these people thinking he's so humble and this is sad must not have a lot of social awareness either.
This is the funniest shit I've seen in a while. The schedule mixup where the crowd thinks he's a comedian, how his delivery and pauses could be interpreted as some ironic comedic act, the rising confusion he gets from getting laughter after each thing he reveals about himself, the slow and dry buildup to the 'punchlines', and every time he doubles down on being serious, the crowd equally reflects it with more laughter. What a gem.
Profound. Wonderful that he was willing to be vulnerable. Good lesson for the counselors for working with pastors. Because we tend to think they "shouldn't" need help. But, remember, all of God's servants had at least one person they could talk to at a deeper level.
@@bean7496 I couldn't believe he was until he sounded offended towards the end. But he seriously sounded like he was joking. I think that's what the audience thought too.
So, I played this clip for my wife, who is a professional therapist and counselor. She doesn’t understand all the fuss. I was immediately shocked at how poorly the crowd was treating John, but she said she thought he was kind of funny and his dry sense of humor was just a part of his schtick. At that point I just stopped talking.
Those were deep examination of the heart that he was pouring out there. He was showing futility of man and how the best of us can still have to struggle with weakness. I was touched by his remarks...I am sure John Piper is an INFJ.
Love this man and love this crowd. Simple and harmless misunderstanding. The crowd is not laughing at him at all but with true joy. His is a righteous seriousness, and theirs is an equally respectful and honorable laughter, simply a rapidly flowing stream which briefly flowed into two parallel tracks

This is so telling. People laugh because they are expected to laugh. I've noticed this so many times.
In the audience's defences, his speech did come across as deadpan humor when taken out of context
And adding context doesn’t really change much either...
That's exactly how I took it, "humor". Most of these comments had to be made at the title of the video and not actually watching it.
@@josephbolognone6014 I don't agree, Joseph. Looking at the title I assumed it was clickbait and Piper was being genuinely humorous, but watching the video changed my mind. There's no doubt by the end that he was pleading with them to take seriously the convictions that "make him cry," and the audience isn't getting it.
how much more context do they need? One of the most renowned serious speakers on the planet came to speak at their conference.
That's is what girls watch man!... guys Don't watch that

Comedians often sound very serious
God bless, Jesus loves you and died for you all
You couldn’t see the humor in his delivery?
He's a famous pastor so that's unlikely.
@@jvm-tv unlikely, but that’s actually what happened

This is tremendous, Piper shows he understands the psychology of counseling and the psychology of the fallen human species. It was a very clever and insightful talk while being transparent about being the chief of sinners. I love it.
I legitimately thought this was fake, that a laugh track was added until he mentioned the laughing towards the end. I’m in disbelief, the moment was completely lost on them.
I literally thought this was edited afterward to add laughing!

Piper is a man of God who deserves respect and a listening ear and a closed mouth from the audience!!!
I'm anon Christian and I agree
Very sad to watch.
Possibly one of the weirdest thing I've ever seen.
I believe it was the way he delivered the talk while occasionally smiling, that gave the counsellors permission to laugh.
Needed a Paul Washer moment.
Or a good ole “what’s wrong with you people?!”
Don’t know why you’re laughing, I’m talking about You.
@@Aletheia828 so true hahahhaha, I was thinking the same thing

Excellent, honest, timely humor. Much appreciated.
Imagine being this guy
I appreciate his humility. I don't think he was intentionally trying to humor the audience.
It’s sad they laughed as he poured his heart out. People these days.
Lmao who gives a fuck
We got it pal, no need to spam it everywhere over and over.
Some people might not have
You've commented this a bunch of times on this video, but I doubt you have proof that this is the case. There is no evidence that there was supposed to be a comedy routine in his place. John Piper is a well known theologian who has 1 million followers on twitter and his own extensive wikipedia page. I'd bet almost every Christian counsellor in that room knew exactly who he was. It'd be like going to an NBA conference and not knowing who Damian Lillard is. Of course that'd be ridiculous to suggest. What a gem.

So, I played this clip for my wife, who is a professional therapist and counselor. She doesn’t understand all the fuss. I explained to her that John is one of the most humble/meek speakers out there and I have rarely heard him crack anything near to a joke… To which she responded, Well if he wasn’t trying to be funny he should not have led with a joke. At that point I just stopped talking.
