Thanks Louis. I hope for an amazing finish as well. You’re just going to have to travel to New Zealand 🇳🇿 to see them. But there may be the odd specimen in the USA. Dean Koontz mentions them at least twice in his books Thanks for watching Brett
Yes a very nice piece. Good news is I have another five chicks to turn most are slightly smaller but will be at 350 mm diameter Another lesson learnt 😀
Hi David. I am base in Auckland, New Zealand. Pōhutukawa is very common tree but also many are huge and protected. So you need to check before rushing out and grabbing the chainsaw
400mm is still a good size bowl IMO. I thought your lathe could do 450 (18") over the bedways but guess not. Does this variety of wood dull your tools quickly?
Hi Stuart, yeah the late can only spin 400 mm over the bed. But it can get to 720mm over off the side. adding in the check pushed the project out to far whereas the face plate meant I could turn a bigger blank. I must admit taking the extra 25 mm off the diameter was a tad disappointing, Thanks for the feed back Stuart, Brett
Good luck with finishing the bowl.........gonna' be a beauty. We don't have any Pohutukawa hear in Maine (USA).

Brett, that is a nice piece of wood that you turned that bowl from and a nice size too.
Thanks heaps Hans. I really appreciate your support. Cheers Brett
Great piece of wood, too bad that you could not core it and make several bowls. 😎

Wonderful looking Wood. Where do you find this species of wood? Cheers!

Hey, nice video, may I suggest roughing it out round with chainsaw as it puts I lot of unnecessary stress on bandsaw blade
Thanks Dave. Good pro tip. Will be doing that going forward. Far too much weight in this piece. B
Hi Brett
Job well done, you’ll need a rest now after all that heavy turning.
Look forward to seeing it finished,
Regards
