    A day in a life of an English teacher in China follows Cassandra on her journey to work. Cassandra has been teaching English in China for over two years in Shanghai.
    Like most teachers in China, Cassandra has settled into regular teaching schedule, enjoys eating local food on the way to work and uses public transport.
    However, as an English teacher in China, no two days are the same. Each day is an opportunity to teach a new class, share new experiences and even enjoy some time with friends after work.

      Hi Elide, thanks for getting in touch. The requirements are based on the visa requirements for the countries that we hire in. At the moment, you need to hold a bachelor's degree in any subject. You need to be a passport holder (or be able to obtain a passport) from one of the following countries: UK, USA, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa. You will also need a 120-hour TEFL certificate. EF can offer a TEFL sponsorship for successful candidates who don't yet have a TEFL. You can learn more at www.englishfirst.com/teachenglish

    Hi. I am interested in having the opportunity to teach abroad. I'm currently an assistant teacher for PreK students. I have a BA in psychology. Would I qualify for a teaching opportunity in your program or would i need other credentials?

    • @niel19861
      @niel19861 6 років тому +1

      I can answer that for you. Requirements, in general, are the following: Bachelors Degree (Any) from an English speaking country, 120 Hr TEFL course (This can be done online, however, make sure the online academy you choose doesn't have the word online on the qualification), a police clearance (for obvious reasons) and some experience in teaching will get you the higher paying positions. I am moving to Shanghai in May to teach English as well. Let me know if you need any help or more information. :)

    • @EFenglishfirst.WorkAbroad
      @EFenglishfirst.WorkAbroad  6 років тому +1

      Hi, Niel is correct. Your BA in psychology is okay as long as you get a 120-hour TEFL certificate. Like Niel said, this can be done online. EF can also sponsor your TEFL qualification if you are successful with an interview. You can learn more about positions at www.englishfirst.com/teachenglish

    I love the video. China sounds like an amazing place. How were you able to find housing? Is it expensive?

    • @EFenglishfirst.WorkAbroad
      @EFenglishfirst.WorkAbroad  5 років тому +3

      Hi Sonya
      Although some schools in the smaller cities provide housing, on the whole, EF doesn’t. Although housing can be a concern for most of our new teachers, we have found that it is better if you get to choose your living situation. If you prefer to live alone, you can live alone. If you prefer to save money and live with roommates, you are free to do so. You can choose where you live, who you live with and choose to live in the part of town that you like. When you arrive, we will provide two weeks hotel stay for you, so that you have time to house hunt.
      During your onboarding training, you will have a session on housing, so you know what to look for, and we’ll put you in touch with English speaking housing agents so that you can find the right place for you :)
      Hope this helps!

      Hi Aashik, teachers can choose where they live in relation to where their teaching center is, so some people don't mind commuting for 40 minutes-1 hour, whereas some people would prefer to be a 5 minute walk away from work. It all depends on where you'd prefer to live :)

    so really she only worked about three hours a day? started about 4:45 and quit about 8:00 pm, so about three hours of work?? is that typical? even though she started at 2p.m. allright about six hours total. Is that true? does she get paid for 8 hours or only on the clock for actual time? is there a set salary no matter how long a day she teaches? just curious as to how this works.

    • @EFenglishfirst.WorkAbroad
      @EFenglishfirst.WorkAbroad  6 років тому +4

      Hi Loretta, thanks for getting in touch.
      Cassandra made this video as a snapshot of an average day. The video doesn't cover everything that a teacher does at EF, but offers a good insight. Typically, teachers will teach 4 hours per day and have time for lesson planning as well. A typical work week is 40 hours in total, which is an 8 hour day.
      You will be paid a set salary no matter how long the day is. During busy periods, you may be asked to come in an hour earlier, but you will also be given this time back at another time.
      Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any more.
      Thanks
      Erica

      This is a weekday schedule. You might and often will do 8 hours of real time (8x60 min.) teaching a day on the weekends. I usually spent 10 to 12 hours at work on Saturdays and Sundays. You will also other things like testing and interviewing potential students, demo classes or even participating in marketing events. Weekends are hard. My calves and my lower back always suffered on the weekends. I've never been given anytime time off to compensate for extra work or overtime i did for EF. Never ever

      Hi Oliver, thanks for getting in touch. It is difficult to compare the two countries and say which one is better. They both have their pros and cons. In terms of travel and work opportunities, China looks like a very good option. China is a large country with a long history. There are lots to see and do, and getting around the country is easy and affordable thanks to the large bullet train network. I have been here for almost 3 years, and it has been incredible. From time to time I do miss home but the experience is worth it. The final decision is down to you. I recommend that you speak to a few different people and ask about their experiences, but go with your gut.
