I'm glad videos like this exist to really hammer home how badly I suck at painting minis.
You don't suck at painting minis, you are painting them and putting the effort in to practice. practice is a long term investment. You will never see the results from a year of practice when you start your very first mini. Persist, learn and be gentle with yourself. Let mistakes happen, don't beat yourself up over them, learn from them and apply them to your next paint up and you will see improvement. Improvement that will compound over time. Best of luck out there fellow painter, you got this!
That is a gorgeous dragonโฆ and I LOVE the idea of using bone white and leather brown highlights on the fleshy parts of the wings, Iโve been struggling with what I will use for my nozuls young blue dragon!
Don't think i've seen anyone use speedpaints with an airbrush yet, it looks so smooth and vibrant
Ah thanks, it's just something i wanted to have a go at and see what they would be like. I just had Vallejo air paints and then recently got Army Painter Air paints. But i found the vallejo paints to go on nicely but then just dry dull and desaturated - which is really frustrating.
So the Speed paints work a treat, and if painted over the Vallejo paints then they bring the colours back to life a bit!
Once again, fantastic work!
Thank you kindly! I swear having these paints now at my disposal has given me a new found love for painting - which i thought was going to be difficult enough as i REALLY ENJOY IT!! :):)
Just found this. It's really useful for a dragon I'm working on right now. I learned several techniques, and your end result is awesome. Thank you!
Fantastic, glad the video could help :)
I will be doing another dragon soon with the speed paints method, there will be a vote to see what colour!
What did you end up doing? :)
Dragondragondragondragon โคโคโคโคโค Seriously though, great technique for getting really nice results with speed paints on such a large surface area!
haha i knew you would like the dragon content! Don't worry we have got more on the patron coming soon, i'm working on that Drake and finishing it this week :)
Really enjoying the use of speedpaints on the larger surface area, and combining them with the normal airbrush range too can give some nice results - i've got quite a few monsters on my desk currently haha :):)
Great video mate ๐
Dang the quality of this channel is amazing, keep it up! I'll be watching.
Thank you kindly! I'll try - there is a lot to paint out there! :):)
I wanna see how you donโt the one on the far left as a shorts video please that looks amazing
Thanks for this one! Was looking for some inspiration to tackle my drakes with an airbrush and hadn't seen much, but this was just what I was looking for
Glad it was helpful! I like Airbrushing the big stuff, doesn't seem like a big of a task once a few colours have been laid down haha Have fun with your Drakes! :):)
I'll will be using this for stormcast dragon and middle earth one. Great vid
Thank you! Good luck on yours and i hope they go well! :):)
Dude, you're a god. I'm painting the wizkids adult black dragon with craft paints. Can't believe I didn't use speeds through the airbrush.
haha i try and do what i can. If i can make use of paints in a number of ways then i find them even more cost effective :):)
Hope you had fun painting your black dragon? :)
This was very helpful, I just finished my first resin print , it's a dragon bust, and I'm using some of your techniques but with a darker scheme (I want to paint a darker dragon with red highlights). It helped me also with my airbrush that I haven't used so much yet.
ah fantastic, i hope that you enjoyed painting the dragon bust! :) Glad that the video could help :)
I tried the speed paint with an airbrush on a Gundam once, came out fantastic. Honestly something about speedpaint and it came out fantastic
Its just so nice isn't it! Glad to hear that it worked really well for you too :)
Cool
Wow nice and easy
Thanks! :)
I like your technique.
Thank you! Cheers! :) I like to just try things and see if and how they work - and this was a treat for me, really enjoyable process :)
Just stumbled into your channel mate, it's fab! Thankyou :-)
ah thank you very much! Glad to have you here and hope you like some more of the videos and find them useful :)
Great tutorial.
Glad you liked it! :)
I use speedpaints through an airbrush to do Ultramarine tanks
Do your initial prime
Spray all over with Highlord Blue
Mix Highlord with some white or pale grey. Drybrush that all over the mini to bring up the edges
Then with a large soft brush (cheap makeup brushes are ideal) stipple some more of the Highlord into the center of panels to get some gradient and a bit more depth
After that, it's just detailing. I would suggest giving it a coat of matte varnish before you do the details though, as the speedpaint doesn't love being handled
Awesome! good idea :) Especially with the method of using make up brushes to add the gradient back in :)
@@SwordsandBrushes cheap makeup brushes are great for drybrushing and stippling. They really should be a part of every painter's arsenal. The biggest issue with them is they're take ages to dry after cleaning them, which means you usually need a couple on hand if you're planning on tackling multiple colours in a session
But hey, that's why you get cheap ones
You have to paint Smaug with Airbrush! Cant wait to see that ๐
I was thinking the same thing lol
I will do! Question is do i make a video of it, as it's half finished and im not stripping it lol
Very, VERY impressive young man!!!!
Thank you kindly! Using my new found methods/techniques from doing some dragons recently i'm going to transfer that to my miniatures and get more of my poor backlog of wonders painted! :)
@Swords and Brushes I would think it would be difficult to airbrush small 32mm miniatures. Not a lot of surface area to work with. Still... fun to experiment. Again, GREAT WORK!!!!
Hey man, PLEASE show how you painted the Orcs in your Video!!! Really nice job ๐๐ป
Sure i can add that to my list - i will need to get some more! :)
Looks really great. I tried this myself with similar colors, but 2.0 instead of the originals. Pallid went on much wetter than the reds and greens. I had to dry it quite a bit so not sure if it works as well now as before.
Great video , I had these bought for me in march . Never thought about using a airbrush with them . I don't paint miniatures . But I think it may work on my models .
Thank you kindly! Yes they have been a game changer for me whilst using them through the brush, it gives some nice vibrancy to a model compared to the Vallejo Airbrush paints i used for the last few years.
Hope you have fun doing your models! :)
@@SwordsandBrushes I am just hoping they may work on 1/10 scale models that I will print
@@jimallen4382 oo what are you printing? When I get a pocket of time and want to paint something different I shall be using the speedpaints for some Warlord Games American Civil war epic miniatures - just because I think they would make a good fit for them - but I can get them done relatively quickly for some games! :)
@@SwordsBrushes it is mainly marvel or DC
Subscribed, your vids are awesome and I like how you explain things and the vibe you pu on them, great work!!! Quick question, do you have a ratio from speed paint to thinner for the airbrush??
Thank you very much for the kind words! I try to do my best and make the videos easy to follow along but then not too long so we all get bored lol
i tend to put a couple drops of seed paint to a drop of thinner as a start - sometimes i go half and half depending what i'm doing and how thin i want the layer to be - but once you start doing it, i'm sure you will find a great ratio that you will like to paint with :)
Ahh yes, i see you are practicing for Smaug, the Desolator of the North. Lol no but for real, great video
haha well it's been on my shelf for about 7 years and it's about time i actually finish the little toerag lol
What blue colour did you use to paint the black and blue dragon?
I already have the cheap compressor kit but Iโm not crazy about it. I think the airbrush it comes with is definitely on the lower side of quality. The Iwata brush worth the upgrade? These things youโre painting look amazing!
any named airbrush (badger iwata H&S) are better than the cheap Chinese airbrushes. Have a look at the new Harder & Steenbeck for miniature painting.
From my experience - the two cheap airbrushes i have used, 1 from a kit and then i bought a replacement which was about ยฃ15 have been pants!
The screw parts of the airbrush always seem to dislodge and i get irritated.
I have a neo Iwatta now and that my go too - I just felt different from the get go and it's been going strong for 3 years now, and i still use my cheap kit airbrush compressor! haha
I have a couple of airbrushes which have been sent to me by another company so im going to give them a go and i'll do a video for them at some point. But for now the neo is what i use for all the videos :)
Great work ! What are the speed paints used for the green and the black one ? Thanks !
Ah the cheeky black one in the last photo was done with normal airbrush paints, just seemed the best way to do it that way.
You can find the colours used on the back end of this Fellbeast photo as they are the same for the black :)
ua-cam.com/video/RpN7zfJYyrM/v-deo.html
I have worked on some horses and also chaos stuff to get a black/off- black look with speedpaints and i think i will do a video on that topic as i really like the end result.
The basis was to spray it black, and then zenithal or preshade it white - then you can go back over with the Grim Black through the airbrush - or for some "fantasy results" using the coloured paints as an inbetween to tint the colour before the black goes over it.
It's simpler doing it than trying to write it out lol - but it gives some nice results! :)
Great video!!๐ Can't wait to try your approach.
Quick question though, I didn't quite follow how you triggered the reactivation in SP2.0. Army Painter says reactivation for 2.0 is time dependent (within 4 hours?). How does increasing PSI do this? Presumably you have to thin the paint further when increasing the PSI too. Thanks in advance for your clarity.
hes using sp1.0 the better formula
Thank you for watching :)
This little fella was done with the existing Speed paint range (the first one) i've not had the pleasure of trying out the newest ones as i don't have any, so it will be interesting to see what they can do through the airbrush.
Hopefully it will work in some way to force the reactivation, and i will experiment with this as it's one of my favourite features of the paint! :):)
Amazing, did you use medium to use the speedpaint with airbrush?
For the most part i just put it straight through as is, if i want a really faint colour to go on then i add a bit of medium to thin it down slightly.
But overall they work fine and dandy straight from the bottle :)
I used Army Painter Speed Paints with airbrush and small compressor, and I ALWAYS had an issue with it. When I use Vallejo with thinner, everything works perfect. Speed Paints needs thining for me. Maybe I need better compressor.
Its definitely my go to for quite a lot of painting these days, i too use the Vallejo thinner at times with them when i want something specific.
If it helps, i just use a bog standard compressor that came with a kit from Amazon and have the PSI normally around 20-25 :)
I would love to know what colour you used on the darker blue one and any tips you have for replicating that one. Want to paint a Hydra in that colour
Ah yes! The dark black blue one was somewhat of a colour test to another monster i painted up - you can see the colours used and the method in the Fellbeast video here:
ua-cam.com/video/RpN7zfJYyrM/v-deo.html
Good luck painting your Hydra! :)
Great work man! One quick question, the mini you're holding at 9:25 was painted with speed paint?
Ah that dragon was done with Vallejo paints a fair few years ago, im not happy with it as the paint is quite dull looking - so i will use Speedpaints over the top and finish it off properly :)
Can You give The recipe For other colors? Or make the paid pdf on your Page? I would love to buy it so that i can recreate this wonderful work!
For the Black dragon, i used he same colours as the one you could find in my 'Fellbeast video' and then for the other two i did write down in a document the main colours.
If you would like to contact me via my website, i'll have an email that will pop up from you - and i will just send you a screen shot of the document with the colours :):)
Is there a good reason to use Tamiya thinner specifically? It's solvent based as opposed to the usual thinners which is why it's needed if you're using Tamiya's own paints; but I've not seen it used with other types of acrylics before.
No specific reason, it's just the only thinner that i have here. I bought it years ago and i have just seemed to have stuck with it ever since :):)
Do you have tutorials for the other colors of dragons?
Not as of yet, however the Blue style variant will be up on my Patreon at some point with a shiny new dragon from Dungeons and lasers :)
What PSI do you usually have it on when you are really close with the airbrush?
Nearly all of the time i have it at around 20-25 :)
Which colors did you use for the green version?
I'll copy them from my notes - but im thinking of doing a full video on another dragon for either the blue or green one :)
Green & Cream
Cream Wings first
Spray VSP 74.615 Ghost Grey
Speed Paint Pallid Bone (wings and skin)
Speed Paint Crusader Skin (wings) - may not need this
Speed Paint Hardened Leather recesses (wings and skin)
Speed Paint Holy White (layer wings)
Speed Paint Hardened Leather (watered down recess and then blusher brush out)
Green Areas
Speed Paint Orc Skin (scales base)
Speed Paint Absolution Green (recesses for scales)
Angel Green (blusher on stripes)
Scaly Hide (drybrush)
Green Tone (recess shade)
hope that helps! :)
Have a video for the black dragon???๐
I used the same colours and method for another miniature which you can find in this video :)
ua-cam.com/video/RpN7zfJYyrM/v-deo.html
@@SwordsandBrushes sweet, thanks!
What size nozzle do you use? Is it 0.5 or 0.3?
Just the one it came with in the box - a 0.35mm
What was colors did you use for the black dragon?
For the black dragon i used some normal Airbrush paints for that particular scheme, you will find a how to on the second half of the Fellbeast video just here :)
ua-cam.com/video/RpN7zfJYyrM/v-deo.html
If it donโt have access to spread or contrast paints could I use ink
Absolutely! I believe you just need to thin down the ink a bit as they are high in pigment. But just test it out first on a small section or scrap model :)
@@SwordsandBrushes what could I use to dilute it
Hi, could you please write down the colors used for the Green and Blue Dragon?
Sure they are: Cream Wings first
Spray Vallejo Primer 74.615 Ghost Grey
SP Pallid Bone (wings and skin)
SP Crusader Skin (wings) - may not need this
SP Hardened Leather recesses (wings and skin)
SP Holy White (layer wings)
SP Hardened Leather (wd recess and blusher out)
Green Areas
SP Orc Skin (scales base)
SP Absolution Green (recesses for scales)
Angel Green (blusher on stripes)
Scaly Hide (drybrush)
Green Tone (recess shade)
And the blue one is:
Light Blue
Spray Vallejo Primer 74.615 Ghost Grey
SP Magic Blue - (basecoat)
SP Highlord Blue - (recess & scales)
Cream Wings
SP Pallid Bone - mix with a lot of Tamiya Thinner and force the SP Blood Red to reactivate to create a gradient.
SP Hardened leather - for the shaded parts going across the wings
I have a dragon from another company so i may well do one of these colour schemes for that one and make a video :)
@@SwordsandBrushes thank you very much
your looking like the master of reactivation!! though maybe to late:( if you ever find away to make the 2.0 line work like the 1.0 line it would be much appreciated! and save my buying a few boxes of the 1.0 line
oh i love it - it's so good, allowing you to blend like that with zero effort involved and if you make a mistake when painting layers you can just 'wet brush it off' - golden!
I'm really liking them as "shades and "layers" over a painted layer and they work a treat alongside the normal airbrush range.
I will find a way, maybe using some sort of paint retarder may do the trick - i like to experiment :)
Late but I have been told adding Speedpaint medium or equivalent can make it akin to 1.0
@@barty1995 hmm not sure about that.. adding 1.0 medium sure, but thatโs going out of production and itโs going to dilute the colour. I havenโt tried it though
Yeah I actually liked that SP 1.0 had reactivation to make belnding so much easier. SP 2.0 swung too far in other direction in terms of activation and do not find them as useful and difficult to blend as previous versions sadly. I have tried using the 1.0 medium with some success but just not the same. I have moved on to Scale75 Instant Colors with a good middle ground
A pet smaug ๐
haha well you know, he's a rescue - found him out in the cold rain on the streets of Dale and gave him a home lol
You're not going to have much luck blending like that with speedpaint 2.0 considering fixing reactivation is the whole reason there even is a 2.0!
I will find a way!!! Haha
No worries if not, i'm just having so much fun using these through the airbrush and painting by hand, just looking forward to loads more colours to chose from! :):)
speedpaints clog my airbrush in about 5 seconds...
how? they are like coloured water :P
Kinda defeating the point of speed paint
Just a different way of using them, I like using them as washes when painting by hand, but i also prefer these than Vallejo airbrush paints by a mile - they just give a lot more vibrancy :)
It's helped me get the mini done much quicker than what i would have normally and i use the reactivation properties to another benefit, so for me it's a win win :)
It's [va-ye-ho] not [va-le-yo]...
It's also Wingardium LeviOsa, not LevioSA :)
