    Great simple straightforward technique. First video on basic technique, not REI, had a person that I wish I could take out and teach as his technique was wrong and had 54K subscribers all learning wrong too. :( Again Great video!!!

    Most instructors would disagree that the last third of the sweep does much of anything at all, it's the opposite, it's the first third that's most important. Good paddlers exit the water on their sweep roughly 2/3rds of the way back to the stern and will rarely bring their blade all the way back. Bringing your blade all the way back can actually stop the turn as it can become a stern pry. You can see clearly in this video how the kayak stops turning and starts tracking straight when he is in the last third of the stroke. I think this guy might have remembered the instruction he received when learning a little backwards.

    Isn’t torso rotation dangerous for your back? Especially when combined with other muscle pulls etc.?

    • @stevenhulbert7540
      @stevenhulbert7540 Рік тому

      Starting kayaking in early 2022, if you don't twist your torso you don't get torque to use less arm strength which will exhaust you quickly. Try kayaking with just arms and no torso rotation and see how much energy you use.

    Is that a high angle paddle or low angle? It looks like a high angle paddle.

    • @MikeGillSeaKayak
      @MikeGillSeaKayak 3 роки тому

      That's a high angle blade and a paddle that is about 15-20cm too long, that's one of the reasons why you see his boat not tracking well when he paddles forward.

    I don’t agree with this video. I believe the best stroke is always in front of you and should never go past your body unless to recover. Paddling behind you promotes drag, turns the kayak more than necessary, and pushes the bow down into the water slowing you down.

    Not to brag, but I've never had to use a reverse stroke. My kayak likes to come to a stop on its own.

    Good information for beginners but improper technique makes for bad habits when imitated.
