Definitely the best Studio One tutorial I have seen, and I have seen well over a hundred. Thanks for being patient with us know-nothings and sharing your hard-gained knowledge. Thank you, and thanks again.
Your detailed explanation is absolute GOLD!!! I really need this kind of explanation to take some of the mystery in trying to get my head around what is going on in Studio One. Have Subscribed.
Great job, for years I’ve been recording and watching multiple people teach engineering, by far you are the most direct to the point, easy to understand, you just explain things very well and seem to be a great teacher. It definitely takes patience on your end I’m sure, thank you.
Believe me, this was a very clear explanation, right to the point and avoiding any useless frill we are used to see constantly proposed. Good job, and very well done!
Thanks you for such a clear and concise explanation of the difference between creating insert and send effects. I thought you did a really outstanding job of explaining the signal path and really appreciate such great content!!
Amazing, best explanation of this I have saw, going to save so much time as I have just been doubling up the tracks and to get effects and deleting where needed ✌👌
Thank you! I have watched other videos that kind of explained how they worked, but I never really got it. Your explanation was easy to understand. Thank you again!
thank you for the way you take patience to explain every single detail of this subject, I couldn't help but subscribe to your chanel. i am a new bee in sound eng. I admire your style keep it up.
Man, if I could like this video more than once I would!!!! I've been tryna figure out how to send guitar reverbs to the opposite side from the actual guitar.......AND this seems to have done it. Send to an FX channel/ Brilliant! THANK YOU!!! Subscribed!
Thank you sir, you have a nice way of explaining things. By the way I'm new to Studio One, is there a way to move the master/main track to the left side of the screen so I can have my busses,fx and all those things on the right ?
I think the quality of your video speaks for itself - nobody has written anything stupid in the comments section, which is very unusual. I would like to thank you for such a clear explanation. I am new to recording and this is quite a complicated area - I guess I shall have to just experiment and see. Best wishes, John
For me there's no greater source of inspiration and motivation to create these videos than to hear that they are useful to some people so thank you for your very kind words, John! Should you have any other questions feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer them.
Hey this is one of the best explanations found, hands down..but I wanna have a doubt. In one fx channel itself is it possible to put multiple effect or for each effect a send channel is created?
You omitted to explain why you need send effects. The idea is, for instance, the drums are a collection of instruments in the same room, so you want the same reverb characteristics for all of them, but in greater or lesser amounts. Using a send means you only use one instance of the reverb plugin to affect ALL the drums, so the whole kit sound is coherent and sounds natural, rather than lots of individual instruments with different qualities.
Great tutorial. It begs the question - in what scenarios would you use a reverb (for example) as a send and not as an insert, and vice-versa? And what would be the pros and cons of each method? Thanks.
Putting a reverb or a delay on a send is a great way to save on system resources. EG, you might want to add reverb to vocals, backing vocals, snare, guitars etc. you can send them all to the same reverb or delay, rather than adding a separate instance of the fx on each channel. It's a lot easier on your computer. It's also great for parallel compression. Add a compressor to a send channel, then send your drum buss to it. You will instantly get huge drums.
Good day Percy. For the sends and Inserts would you set the volume the same as the track or would it be a different volume. Thank you very much. I am a beginner at production. Trying to learn as much as I can. Have a safe and productive week.
Hello Paula, there are no rules on what the volume level should be. It all depends on your preferences as to how much of the effect you like to add to the sound.
I am doing this putting effect during recording but when i hit record the output is not the same what i hear when i am doing the record, during the record i hit reverb for certain area, then i turn off. But when i play the output i didn't hear the effect in my recording. Sorry for my bad englis please help, is there a way that i can add some effect during my recording?
Probably the best way to use hardware (effects) with Studio One is by using the Pipeline plugin. Just add the plugin to any track, set it up with your hardware and you can use the effect almost kinda like a VST plugin.
Great explanation on the insert and send distinctions. . I only wished that U wouls have played the drum track after U added the FX to the send and manipulated the 'Dog' track so that people could see the visual difference at work. Great tutorial, nonetheless though. Thank U
You could have added one last part - actually bringing the reverb up and down on the send and return so we can see it actually being controlled and the resulting sound. Other than that, great explanation!
That doesn't sound right! Unfortunately, I have no idea what might keep them from downloading. If I were you I'd contact Presonus; hopefully they'll have a solution for you.
OK, so I read the comments and I agree, the issue is when to use a send over an insert. At this stage in my thinking I have only the one reason for using a send effect, which is to sort of glue the mix together... If a set of the sounds all go to the same compressor, or the same reverb, or the same eq, albeit in different amounts, these effects will sort of unify the sound, to some extent. I can think of no other reason for using sends and I didn't use them for a long time, simply because they complicate the routing and it was just more stuff to get my head around. I use them now, but only for the purpose I just said. Is there another reason?
Thank you, Adrian! You make some good points. As soon as I can I will try to make another video with some more information and some suggestions regarding this issue.
Hello Adrian, as promised I made a video about deciding on when to use an insert effect and when a send effect. I hope this will clarify some things for you. ua-cam.com/video/o2_-pwWnj4U/v-deo.html
Thanks for your comment, Anand! I actually touched on that point at the end of the video. What I tried to say is that there really isn't a wrong way of using any effect. (almost) Any effect can be used either as an insert effect or as a send effect, and the only reason why you would choose one over the other comes down to what it is you're trying to achieve. To clarify this a bit I will try to make a video about this as soon as I can.
Hello Anand, as promised I made a video about deciding on when to use an insert effect and when a send effect. I hope this will clarify some things for you. ua-cam.com/video/o2_-pwWnj4U/v-deo.html
Thanks, good dedication man lol. I replied also on your kontakt post when you get a chance. I was asking what the purpose is of routing kontakt channels to studio one, why not just use kontakt to control it? I guess it's a work flow convenience thing?
my problem with all these videos explaining this is you guys don't explain what happens when we send compression to the send effects and reverb to the insert. Why is that the "right" way to do it? You don't explain.
Hello Mario. First of all my apologies for my late response. Second of all: good point!!! I would say that there really isn't a wrong way of using any effect (like compression or reverb), it's more about preferences and what it is you're actually trying to achieve. So, for example, it is not wrong to use a compressor as a send effect, it simply might result in a different sound, and the question is: what sound are you looking for? Again, good point! I will try to make a video with a little bit more information about this as soon as I can.

Thank you so much, Steve! I hope the video was helpful to you.
Hello. Would it work if you just left click the kick track and select bus through there ?
Well done! A very practical demonstration making the information usable to anybody right away. Great job, Percy!!
Thank you, John! 😉
I just want to say what fantastic explanation!! I like how you kept it simple and didn't add anything that wasn't necessary.
I agree with Steve; Crystal clear way of talking, not rushing anything. You are a bless!

Excellent tutorial!
Just one question,
How did you get the option to collapse and expand the send/insert screen for each channel?
You had me cracking up 😅

THERE are now four levels of volume? Or even more! So later if I want more kick I use ? The kick fader or the send or the bus level or I made a group?
True that.
My my thank you very much.
You're very welcome, Paula!
Thank you for the comment 😉

How do you do send return when using hardware presonous channelstrip Focusrite 18i8 in a art pro ii compressor
Probably the best way to use hardware (effects) with Studio One is by using the Pipeline plugin.

So the sends will use the original signal and they will bypass the effects of the inserts, right ?
Usually not by default, but you can choose to feed the original signal to a send effect.
