Something I never touched on in the review, mainly because I did cover it in my last Manor lords video is the sheer immersion that you get from play the game. Things like raising an army of farmers, bakers, blacksmiths, berry pickers etc and marching in formation with them for miles to a battle. After the battle with bodies everywhere your men walk home and as they enter their province they disband and all walk back to their jobs in dribs and drabs, it looks awesome. Then you plant a tiny settlement, a tent and some basic rations and start a brand new colony, you defend it with your main army which could be miles away from the inevitable bandit attacks. It all comes together in such a cool way it’s impossible not to be impressed, I can’t wait for the full release, if the dev reads this please take your time :)
And they aren't cookie cutter either - nothing more annoying than "yet another generic medieval/WWII/civil war/etc. game" that looks like it's going to be good and turns out to be the same old ideas rehashed yet again. The city inventory goods aspect could be fixed by having your lord have his own inventory. Like you needing to compensate the merchants for their stock of weapons before having the weapons sent out to the other town.
Ideally I'd like a more realistic setup where the lord's resources is split from the wider village resources. The lord getting his resources through contracts with his subjects or purchases. Ex: Choosing that the smiths give you gold or a portion of their weapons produced as their tax. The lord having to save up gold or stockpiling items like stone, or buying items from the village inventory in order to use these for "state" or personal projects like castles, walls, armies, and special buildings.

This video is extremely generous with the game, even considering it's Early Access. Was disappointed to find so much lacking in the game. There absolutely are game breaking bugs. This game is not entirely playable as is. It does show great promise but there are a lot of core mechanics that still need fleshing out and balancing. It's not just missing advanced features. For example, keeping track of what jobs are currently being worked and moving people to where you need them is a nightmare. You start with 5 families (each count as a worker-unit). But there are maybe 10 different buildings they could potentially be working in. And if there's nothing to do at a building, they just idle with no warning or indication. You spend most of the game searching for idle workers so you can move them to something else. But there's no screen to actually see who is working where. You just have to hold TAB and scan the buildings for the ones that have workers, deallocate there, and allocate them in another building. But you have to leave some unassigned so anything can be built. It's so frustrating. And it's not entirely clear if certain jobs actually need a worker. Like do I absolutely need a storehouse worker? When? Does the hitching post need a worker to guide the ox? Seems not because anyone can do it, apparently, but it's an option. Why? And farming seems totally broken. My second year my crops just seemed to evaporate after/during harvesting, leaving me set for a very difficult winter. Trade is way more confusing than this video lets on. Like some things need dedicated trade routes, but others don't? Why? What do horses do, why do I need them? When do I need them? How do they help trade? The Marketplace in the game is also very confusing. Like do families just not get stuff they need if it isn't in the stalls? Who exactly is responsible for stocking the stalls in the marketplace? Is it the producer or the storehouse worker? It's frustrating to technically have the resources but the households won't use them unless they make it to the marketplace. They won't go to the storehouse/granary. And the approval rating. That just seems to shift arbitrarily. It will say +4 for food diversity one month and then +1 another even though my food types are the same. I'll have a ton of firewood but then houses will complain about no fuel. It makes no sense. It has something to do with marketplace stalls, but I don't know how or when they are stocked. Do they have to be manned to function? There's no marketplace job.
To be honest I had some of the same questions as you - most of the stuff I worked out after about 2 games. My suggestion is: those things you don't get, just look up on google and you'll find an answe 100% of times
8:20 I disagree, I'm very excited how the game handles the trading between settlements. They tried to go for authenticity in how medieval settlements would function, so while gifting could be done and maybe they'll find a way to implement it later, I love the idea that by default the villages have to actually trade between eachother on what they need, even if you're their Lord. Because it doesn't put you into an almighty God of the lands and puts you into more of a managing, ruling entity instead.
The way the game is at the moment it makes little to no difference as it's easy. When the Ai map opponents arrive it will be a totally unbalanced situation if they keep the barter system, it's not a simple case of here is 1 x flour give me 1 x sword, it is way harder than that to get a deal going, it took me an hour or real time just to get a few weapons as my starter town had hardly any resources to trade that were of value. So all I did was buy a shit load from the trader as I had plenty of money from selling berries, it made the bartering system utterly pointless. Money is easy to get in this game so why spent hours trying to barter with neighbours that will take ages to get you the weapons you need when you can buy them quickly from the traders. I am sure when they test this with map based Ai lords they will realise the current system is insufficient and will tweak it.
@@WorthABuyreviews ah I see the problem. I feel like that might come down to balancing with prices then? They just need to make it more viable to trade between your villages as it is now, and make it more expensive to import from elsewhere.

I have not bought game for years…it deserves every of my pennies. And i really wish that the developer hear your voice in this video because it was very constructive for them
The thing you described at about 8 minutes, where you couldn't have one of your towns "rip off" another one, sounds like one side of a coin. The other side of that same coin has plagued Ostriv for years. In Ostriv, there is this whole mechanical system where the villagers get paid to do work and then buy stuff at the market as well as paying you rent...but they're such perfect little rational agents that they won't buy anything they don't actually need. So the solution to this amazing idea for a system is to set all the prices and all the wages as low as possible, so that as little money actually circulates in the settlement as possible. Then you just handle trade with other places (which you don't run in that game) in a central manner. It doesn't really make sense. Also, I really love to hear of a "genuinely early access" game (some games should really just call their first release 1.0 instead) coming out that's got a bunch of stuff implemented and a bunch of other stuff with a place actually carved out for it. What's already there in this sounds pretty solid but where it looks like this is going is just stunning.
Just started playing it. It's a really good city builder with management options relating to trade and taxes, plus seasons and harvesting and number of families present in your settlement. You need to grow your settlement and then think about defending it plus claiming other regions, which is crucial because resources will exhaust in time. I would have liked more buildings and more resource options but for now it will suffice, given it's early access. I can't expect it to have the amount of content the Anno franchise boasts. Looking forward to updates and to the finished product. I think this game is unique in that it blends city building with army tactics
I feel you're a bit premature blowing your load saying this is one of the greatest games ever made.... (10:55 ish) Sure its good, but there's CURRENTLY 1 map, tonnes of missing features that will take ages to fix/implement (like where is the AI?) , stuff greyed out which as you say we don't know how it'll be implemented yet and some issues with existing features. My hope is ii all gets resolved, fixed and completed to the same standard which may then be the best of the genre ever but to blow your wad this early on it Mac... it's like you've not had good one in a while and are overcompensating hehe
That's the most positive review I can recall Mack making. City builders are not my thing but personally I enjoy the thumbs up videos more than the thumbs down ones; bad games are just not worth wasting much time on.
There is nothing more valuable in the universe than your time. Wasting time playing badly designed or implemented games is not a good use of your time.
The problem with Manor Lords, like all other early-access games, with every upcoming update/patch, they cater to the fan base and make game less challenging/easier. This reduces it to the point of no-challenge unplayability (pretty much like most other releases of this day).
Why/how is being able to place multiple garrisons a bug? Surely the goal is to create many garrisons to raise an army, and the more soldiers you have the more resources they cost to maintain.
Does anyone know if you will be able to fight with your troops at some point? I'd love to be able to fight with my troops as well as backing out to strategy view
great to see a cc ity builder that doesnt suck! gotta wait a few months to see how it fares and then probably get it. dem indie devs nowadays are the true gems in the gaming industry!
Great review, can’t wait to finally play this. It’d be awesome but if the game wasn’t built with multiplayer in mind that could absorb tons of future dev effort. Part of me would rather ensure expanded military, city battles, etc like you mentioned beforehand to make it the perfect single player game of this type. But in a perfect world I’d also like both :)
this WAB is perfect proof that mack is fair. couldve gone like "f that, full of bugs, its a cashgrab", but 1 guy, 7 years of dedicated work, that gets you respect and support.
Super pumped! Been a long few months waiting for it and im not gonna lie, i'm super jealous of all you content creators playing it early! Gaming since 79.
I appreciate that natural look and realistic palette, like with the distant fields at 5:20 A lot of games seem boosted with glossy colours or 'cartoonish' atmosphere like Civ 6 even Aoe 4
@scapingbysmart ass, he's asking if it's a good jumping in point for someone new to the genre. If you've never played an RPG, do you start with Dark Souls or Skyrim?
hmm, I think you might want to try Frostpunk first, it's quite a brief game. Try that and see if you're interested in resource management. city builders are just RTS with different problem solving
I thought it had more available , the game is great but it has 1/4th off the content in the current build but has now a solid foundation. Unfortunately i refunded it , there is barely anything to do after you are kinda done with city building a fight or two on a small map with bandits and a baron it will take another 2 - 3 years in the oven but in the meantime i will hold off untill then.
Pretty old school. When devs (dev in this case) did it because they loved the craft and wanted to be proud of the result. Remember those days? Thanks Mac.
Was very disappointed in this. If it was $20 then sure maybe worth a buy but its so barebones and buggy in current state. It makes me wonder if all these youtubers got a different version of the game than was released. I have no doubt if the developer sticks with it then it will be great one day but for $50 Canadian dollars this is definitely not worth a buy. Games like songs of syx are currently free (the demo is free and is the complete game just one version behind the most up to date) and provide far more content and updates than Manor Lords currently has. The game is vastly overhyped and I wish I had refunded the game after 2 hours before I locked in paying almost full price for a very early access title. Bit disappointed in Mac since he is my go-to guy for spending my hard earned dollars on games these days and I refuse to believe that he didn't notice the numerous issues with this game. It was a huge red flag when the developer refused to advertise the price before the game was available to buy.
Ya the price seems a bit steep, especially here in Canada (everything is expensive, plus add tax to the online purchase). I'm trying to decide on either this or Ostriv (a game that mac previewed a few years back) which is alot less money and seems to have all the features (minus combat) that this game has.
Wow... Your words are word for word my exact thoughts. Gonna add one thing, though: good thing it didn't launch at 20 because I would of followed the hype and bought it. From what I've seen it IS really early early stages. Almost a showcase of what it will be. I might even buy it, but waaaay down the road.
It has not been ONE GUY for a while now. The last few years there was a team. And I hope the team grows. Because I'm not really down for Early Access any more these days.
All these comments, each more excessive than the last, are still damn ridiculous... but it's normal today, we must always be in extremes and exaggeration, without the slightest hindsight. It has absolutely no connection with Starfield, but I imagine it's good to put out this kind of sentence like a sheep following what the troupe says. And the developer didn't make the whole game alone... But I imagine it's more salesy to say that and spread false information
@@nawack2774, the point of my comment is referring to the fact that Bethesda claimed they'd worked hard on Starfield for 7 years. So, yes, there is a connection if you're up to date with the gaming industry.
This can be first RTS from veeery long time we all will be able to call ICONIC. Like settlers, like Age of Empires, Stronghold, C&C, and similar. This will be a next milestone of the genre
From the previews I saw it doesn’t look like it. Seems similar to cities skylines where you are just a character in third person that can look around but not actually interact when in that view. Obviously you command your army though from top down view but maybe down the line it can be implemented where you can fight. Would be cool.
Got this game after watching Macs video, its been a lot of fun. What are some other good city builders that have combat ? Last game i played like this was Warcraft but i loved it.
That's a joke right? I think you have just a tad bit more going on than your typical Sim City 2000 .... which, BTW, you had to play proactively also and couldn't just set to 1.5x time and walk off to make a Hot Pocket. Trying to think of any games that fit your description "just a [FASTFORWARD] [WAITING] simulator" what first comes to mind is the saying "hurry up and wait" I guess you could be talking about GAMEPLAY that fits these conditions... I have an easier time thinking of your phrase in those terms, if I try to pin down a specific title it gets a lot more slippery. However, I have definitely played titles in several different genres that for whatever reason became locked into that pattern of gameplay, either for periods of time during a campaign or mission where it was clear you were making progress and biding your time intentionally while an important resource, unit or tech was being collected or garrisoned etc. Honestly was curious if you were just talking real time games or turn based also. Because you can get REALLY REPETITIVE in those and not actually stuck either. Idk but the point is Ain't that kinda game. Unless you know how to go afk during an Age of Empires match and return without having your world on fire

(10:55 ish)
Sure its good, but there's CURRENTLY 1 map, tonnes of missing features that will take ages to fix/implement (like where is the AI?) , stuff greyed out which as you say we don't know how it'll be implemented yet and some issues with existing features.
My hope is ii all gets resolved, fixed and completed to the same standard which may then be the best of the genre ever but to blow your wad this early on it Mac... it's like you've not had good one in a while and are overcompensating hehe
Im definitely picking this up over the weekend
High praise coming from Mack 👍
That's the most positive review I can recall Mack making. City builders are not my thing but personally I enjoy the thumbs up videos more than the thumbs down ones; bad games are just not worth wasting much time on.
There is nothing more valuable in the universe than your time. Wasting time playing badly designed or implemented games is not a good use of your time.
The problem with Manor Lords, like all other early-access games, with every upcoming update/patch, they cater to the fan base and make game less challenging/easier. This reduces it to the point of no-challenge unplayability (pretty much like most other releases of this day).
I only wish it was harder or like more options for difficulty. best game ive played all year
I can’t wait to play it tomorrow Mac I have been wating since the last public test.
The release date is supposed to be the 26th, isn't it? Or did they change it?
Why/how is being able to place multiple garrisons a bug?
Surely the goal is to create many garrisons to raise an army, and the more soldiers you have the more resources they cost to maintain.
I think it's worth a buy, but what price? $25-ish = yes; $50-ish = no, for me.
It will be interesting to see what price they come up with.
30 bucks.
Currently $30 (US) with a 25% discount; $40 later.
My number one trusted source for game reviews. You've saved me many dollars over the years. I hope your channel continues growing!
Does anyone know if you will be able to fight with your troops at some point? I'd love to be able to fight with my troops as well as backing out to strategy view
It is worth, in a year or two though, not now.
Been following this since it was announced. I'm honestly so happy to see slavicmagic get credit
great to see a cc ity builder that doesnt suck!
gotta wait a few months to see how it fares and then probably get it. dem indie devs nowadays are the true gems in the gaming industry!
I'd love to see co-op/multiplayer added into this game as it would be amazing for roleplaying.
Sandbox not possible because of the endless victory screen bug.
been waiting for this, thanks :)
Love the video mack, been a long time viewer. remember your DAYZ days. hope all is well.
We appreciate your honest review. Thanks Mack!
Can't wait! Good job Mr. developer!
got a 4770k/1080ti - thinking of getting this , hope old bessie can keep the fps up :D
Super pumped! Been a long few months waiting for it and im not gonna lie, i'm super jealous of all you content creators playing it early!
Gaming since 79.
I appreciate that natural look and realistic palette, like with the distant fields at 5:20
A lot of games seem boosted with glossy colours or 'cartoonish' atmosphere like Civ 6 even Aoe 4
Mack becoming Jeremy Clarkson lol
It's amazing what one man can do where massive companies seem to struggle.
The bar was on the floor but this man leapt over the moon!
I'm surprised Mack hasnt got into game development himself. He seems to have some good ideas.
Mack seems to like it.......Gotta try it out now
Looks like a gem. Can't wait.
I've been waiting for your worth a buy on this game, great summary as always defo getting this on Friday 👍
Should i still play it even though ive never played city builders?
@scapingbysmart ass, he's asking if it's a good jumping in point for someone new to the genre. If you've never played an RPG, do you start with Dark Souls or Skyrim?
hmm, I think you might want to try Frostpunk first, it's quite a brief game. Try that and see if you're interested in resource management.
city builders are just RTS with different problem solving
@@GeraltofRivia22 smart ass, it's a joke.
@@GeraltofRivia22 that aint what he said.
@@whytry4682 it's what I meant to say. So yeah
I hope you can also customize the look of your Lord at release.
Love this Mack, I’ll definitely be picking this up
I like the fact that battles are not the focus of this game.
Can't help but agree, this game is special. Full of soul and an obvious passion project refined to a masterpiece. 💞✌😊👍
Most players are forgetting the fact that It’s not a finished product, which is why I didn’t buy it.
Still I think it’s a good game ( for what it is)
Brilliant review, completely sold. Thanks.
How is overall performance and optimisation in this stage of early access?
I’m relieved. I was hoping for the best for this one. Any single dev working this hard deserves success.
Can you control your guy in battle and hit enemies with your own sword instead of just commanding troops? Like in Mount and Blade?
Nope its just a camera essentially
I think you're just a sucker for medieval games. You first said this was one of the best games ever made and now you are changing your tune.
Man co-op in this game needs to happen
For the record, Skull and Bones was in development for 11 years by a AAA studio. Sorry I meant quadruple-A
We need something like this but pirate-themed. Maybe it already exists but I’m not aware of it. I wanna be a pirate captain and manage my crew!
It has not been ONE GUY for a while now. The last few years there was a team. And I hope the team grows. Because I'm not really down for Early Access any more these days.
Ahhh, 7 years, one guy.
Hey, Starfield.... 😏👉
How many interesting areas did Starfield have? Not many in my eyes. How many annoying characters did it have? 90%?
Yeah, in fairness though, when you are one guy you follow your own ideas, not someone elses.
But, my pronounces...
This can be first RTS from veeery long time we all will be able to call ICONIC. Like settlers, like Age of Empires, Stronghold, C&C, and similar. This will be a next milestone of the genre
6:58 sooo what you are saying is, it is another one of "those" games where you need to get heat in order to get rep in order to get bank? :D
variation on ages on empire?
Can you use your character to fight like in Mount n blade?
From the previews I saw it doesn’t look like it. Seems similar to cities skylines where you are just a character in third person that can look around but not actually interact when in that view. Obviously you command your army though from top down view but maybe down the line it can be implemented where you can fight. Would be cool.
I am so excited for tomorrow! This game will be amazing
Does it support ultrawide resolution?
I literally just bought a steam deck for my vacation coming up in a few weeks. So psyched to play this on the plane
Works kinda nice on steam deck on high settings i found just locked it to 30 fps runs nice tho 👍
Got this game after watching Macs video, its been a lot of fun. What are some other good city builders that have combat ? Last game i played like this was Warcraft but i loved it.
Looks great but it's just a fastforward waiting simulator right?
That's a joke right?
I think you have just a tad bit more going on than your typical Sim City 2000 ....
which, BTW, you had to play proactively also and couldn't just set to 1.5x time and walk off to make a Hot Pocket.
Trying to think of any games that fit your description "just a [FASTFORWARD] [WAITING] simulator" what first comes to mind is the saying "hurry up and wait"
I guess you could be talking about GAMEPLAY that fits these conditions...
Idk but the point is
Ain't that kinda game. Unless you know how to go afk during an Age of Empires match and return without having your world on fire
If you loved settlers 3, is pioneers of pagonia a good choice than?
Is the replay value high?
Give it a year, at least. It is absolutely not worth the $30 SALE price tag right now.
Thanks a lot Mack! Any pricing indication yet?
I am so hyped for this
Great review as always. How much does the game cost now in early access?
“Very good citybuilder” - sign me up!
It looks visually impressive for the genre.
