Hey Metallica fans... just wanted to drop a comment and let you know that I realize that as of December 16th, 2022 the content of this video is "out of date". With Metallica playing Lux Æterna last night live for the first time, this video is temporarily inaccurate. I fully expect the band to play this song live many, many times, remedying this issue. Thanks for checking in!
In my honest opinion, even all 106 songs made by Metallica also have a special hidden connection. They were all released under the Metallica name, while also being written by the members of Metallica. Truly astounding.
This information has changed my life. Before I was merely an ordinary, boring person, but now I have been enlightened by the knowledge and will start a new life as a holy man dedicated to finding new ways to play master of puppets
Sweet Amber is about not sacrificing your values for self promotion. They talk about it in "Some Kind of monster TV show" Don't remember all the details but it was about some radio station telling Mettalica they will promote them in exchange for something. They didn't like the deal and didn't go for it. "Using what I want to get what you want"
It was about a radio network saying they wouldn't play any of the songs from the album unless Metallica did a plug for them. That's where line "scratch your back so you won't stab mine" comes from
Didn’t know this wasn’t common knowledge. Technically some were missed here. Hate Train, Rebel of Babylon and Just a Bullet Away have all only been played once. (For the 30th anniversary, when Beyond Magnetic was originally released.) There are a lot of metallica songs still yet to get their live debut though: Load: The House That Jack Built, Cure (the only metallica song with slap bass), Thorn Within, and Ronnie. Reload: Better Than You, Slither, Bad Seed, Where the Wild Things Are (jason’s third and final writing credit), Prince Charming, and Attitude. St. Anger: Invisible Kid, My World, Shoot Me Again, and Purify. HWTSD: Am I Savage? and Murder One. As well as these, there are several Metallica songs to still hold numbers of live performances 10 or less times. 2x - ManUNkind 2x - Suicide & Redemption 3x - Some Kind of Monster 4x - Poor Twisted Me 4x - Carpe Diem Baby 4x - - Human 6x - The Unforgiven II 7x - All Within My Hands 10x - 2x4 Besides Metallica originals, there are also several covers we have never heard live, including Astronomy, Free Speech For the Dumb, The More I See, and Loverman. (If you’re really looking for a good time and a song we’ll never hear live, check out ‘We Did it Again’ by Metallica and Ja Rule.) As a final fun fact, the full debut of My Friend of Misery actually wasn’t until 2012: 11 years after Jason had left the band. Considering this, and that his 3rd writing credit has never been played, you gotta feel bad for the guy.
Thanks for the comment! I was aware of the Beyond Magnetic songs (I was at the 30th anniversary show where they played Rebel of Babylon!), but was only including songs off their 10 proper studio albums in this particular video. Thanks again, cool info in your post.
@@NoneMoreMetal No problem! I think it was really cool that you got to be at the 30th anniversary shows.I also really appreciate the reply! I enjoy sharing the crazy ‘Tallica knowledge I have with others.
Sweet Amber was about a cheesy radio contest one of the stations was asking Metallica to do promos for. They tried to record the promos at HQ but it just wasn’t feeling right - the band felt they were compromising their integrity by pushing a call-in contest for a cash prize. Management relayed their stance to the radio execs and they countered by saying if Metallica doesn’t play ball, the station would not promote the upcoming St. Anger album. Cliff Bernstein called HQ to tell the band how his call with the radio station went, prompting James to summarize the deal: “are they seriously saying ‘we’re gonna fuck you on the promotion of the new record if you don’t do this for us’? Basically I have to wash your back so you won’t stab mine?” This exchange was the basis for the song and was featured in “Some Kind of Monster”.
To Live is to Die is the only one that has been played partially in this set, as a part of the Bass Solo during the Justice tour and the InstruMedley in some 1993 shows (Nowhere Else to Roam Tour)
Fixxxer has a similar vibe to The Outlaw Torn as well. Their both long, grungy and slow paced rock songs that act as monumental album closers and are in my opinion two of Metallicas most underrated songs.
Fixxxer is a masterpiece having the honor of seeing it live and never hearing it before it made me love the song even more such an experience seeing it live.
In the Some Kind of Monster documentary, they talk about Sweet Amber a bit. Essentially, the song originally started as a counter criticism of all the people who were hating on Metallica for the Napster controversy, but that’s only a section of the full song.
The lyrics of 'Sweet Amber' started to be developed after that incident where they were forced to do that promotion stuff for the radio station chains. There was the scene where the lyrics were on the whiteboard. 'Shoot Me Again' was more connected to their/Lars' feelings around the Napster thing. Lars is featured in a voiceover, discussing it. It's such a great movie, isn't it?
I love Sweet Amber. I'm one of the few that loves that whole album. It hits so hard because of the unpolished way they made it. I can totally understand though why so many people hate it so much.
I always thought Escape sounded a bit out of place, like it was a random simple thrash song in the middle of such a musically groundbreaking LP. It took me a while to figure out Fixxxer and Sweet Amber are really good songs. (I kinda wish they’d polish up St. Anger because it would smash with a focused effort.) TLITD is an incredible song. I thought you were going to connect obvious ones like Ktulu, Thing That Should Not Be, and Dream No More, or the Unforgiven trilogy. Nice job! When people do deep dives like this it reminds me how once-in-a-lifetime great this band truly is.
Thank you for the comment. I too wish the production on St. Anger was different (better?). There’s a few songs on there that would be borderline classics if they just sounded better. Thanks again for posting. I love the feedback.

Even though Master of Puppets was played over 1600 times, I have to think Seek and Destroy was played in more shows since 1982 as the latter has been a featured song since their local club days
Seek & Destroy has been played live 1,617 times going all the way back to the beginning. It's actually the second most played song. Just based on my personal experience, there are periods in the band's history where S&D wasn't being played live, whereas with Master, it's never dropped out of the set for any significant amount of time.
If you watched Some Kind of Monster, the band starts writing Sweet Amber right after they get contracted to do a radio commercial that was so cheesy and dumb they felt like it'd be damaging to their integrity. At which point Bob Rock (producer) warns that if they don't comply the radio station will start attacking their next album (what came to be St. Anger) and give it very poor reviews. That led to James coming up with the line "watch your back so you don't stab mine" and gave birth to the song
Wasn't there a festival in the 80s or something where Metallica played a morning slot under a different moniker, and played Ride the Lightning front to back?
I was correct! Of these songs, I think Escape is my favorite. When I heard James announce this song before it was played, it was obvious he was nervous about how it may sound. Long live Metallica!
Yeah, it was clear they (James in particular) wasn't entirely enthusiastic about playing Escape live. I do think they had a little fun with it though. Having said that, I don't expect to see it in the set again any time soon.
Nice video man... I have something to point on for you, but i don't know if it means anything. You know what's in common between Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, & ...And Justice For All.. ? The three of them have the album title name as the second track on the list... means nothing right? yeah I thought so :)
I know loads of Metallica fans, who were disappointed with st anger, I hardly played it, but I am an old fan so was chuffed when they ditched the ping pong snare, and got on with it again, just my thoughts 🎸🥁🏴♠️
Imagine what life would be like if these three disco-era songs “September”, “Turn The Beat Around”, and “Run Like The Wind” have a mysterious connection between each other. Consult The Bee Gees tribute metal band, Tragedy, about this if you guys can.
Unforgiven II has been played live 6 times in total. The first time was on December 8th, 1997 at the Billboard Awards in Las Vegas. That happens to be the only time they've played it live in the United States. The most recent time was on September 16th, 2015 in Quebec City in Canada.
I had a hunch that was it from hearing Escape, that's really cool! I figured more than just 4 could apply to that, particularly with Low Man's Lyric which I thought had only been played during their """Unplugged""" concert in Seoul 1997. I would absolutely kill to hear that one played again too, probably my favorite Metallica track of all time.
Believe it or not, Low Man’s Lyric has been played live 65 times. There was a period on the Reload tour where they played an acoustic mini-set every night within their main set. Low Man’s Lyric was one of the songs they played.
I'd like to see that as well. My understanding is that some members of the band don't look fondly on that song, so I don't anticipate it being in the set any time soon.
Escape is one of the few songs off the first 4 albums that sounds more alternative than metal, like a Load-Reload song. It’s not bad but I’ve always ranked it as one of their lesser songs.
You are actually incorrect. There are 3 songs off of the Beyond Magnetic EP that they only played live once. Hate train, Just a bullet away, and Rebel of Babylon, which were played live at Metallica’s 30th anniversary concert at the Fillmore. The fourth song on that EP, Hell and back, was played a few times live.
This video, as I specifically stated in said video, covers only the 10 proper studio albums Metallica has recorded. I’m definitely aware of the Beyond Magnetic songs, and how many times they’ve been played live. I was in attendance to see Rebel of Babylon.
It was a comment on the radio stations and record companies almost demanding they do promos and stuff or they won't help with airplay and such. In SKOM when they do the radio promo for winning money. "Stick it in your ass" " One dollar at a time"
Well of the top of my head I can think of 3 that follow on from 3 different albums and that's the unforgiven series. There are more that connect, like some of the songs from ride the lightning, justice for all, black, metallic death, garage Inc and master of puppets. These songs have more of a connection than the superstition that you have for the 4 in your video - no offence.
Yes, there are. A decent amount actually. Some off of Load/Reload and St. Anger especially. I may publish a video at some point that touches on those songs.
To Live is to Die has only been played in it’s entirety one time. They did play snippets of it in medleys on some earlier tours, but they’ve only ever played the whole song at the 30th anniversary show in 2011.
His name appears in the credits of the song, which means Metallica explicitly states that Cliff wrote part(s) of the song. What other “evidence” are you looking for?
They were all S&M related shows. They actually played two shows in San Francisco when the recorded the original album and video, then a show in Berlin, Germany on November 19th, 1999 promoting the release of the album. The final time was on November 23rd, 1999 at Madison Square Garden in NYC, also promoting the release of S&M. I was at the NYC show!
@@TheNothing6If you want to be smart, where’s the other three times they played rebel of Babylon? Or just a bullet away? Or hate train? At least those songs were studio recordings.
I dont think you're right.ive seen them in Pittsburgh back when they were still a thrash band and they've played escape and to live is to die, now I dont think Pittsburgh was the only place they've 2 of the 4.This was back in late 80s to early 90s
There's a few I know of. Damage Inc and St. Anger Fade to black and the memory remains Enter sandman and king nothing I'm sure there's a few more, but that's all I got.
They've played Dyers Even 35 times. The first time was on March 5th, 2004. The most recent time was on November 20th, 2010. So it's been a while. I think we're due to see it again!
Now I understand how history is made... in people's heads XD We live in a world where regular dudes become history, because the masses started praising them for their creations. That's quite religious, isn't it? ...but you won't get any salvation from Metallica, they are regular dudes after all XD
It's about a person who doesn't follow societies rules and chooses to be who they really are, despite being judged. It has nothing to do with that dumb shit you just said
Waste of time, you can't say this songs has connetion just beacuse they played them once, then a lot of songs that are played more than one time has a hidden conneciton too, or the songs that they never played.
I dont care about anything about metallica...they should retire long time ago...to me the band is death as soon the justice tour ended cause they became bon jovi after that and become shit after bon jovi album

Metallica played Escape live on November 7, 2022 in Ft. Lauderdale at the Johnny and Marsha Z celebration show
They did not play Escape at that show. They played every song from Ride the Lightning at the Johnny Z show, except Escape.
Nice video
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback.
Good stuff!
Thanks!
What about the E.P Beyond Magnetic?? the songs of that EP seem also only too have been played live 1 time
As I mentioned in the video, I only included the 106 songs from the 10 original studio albums.
Where did you get the exact statistics?
Metallica has a section on their official website where the publish all kinds of information about every song they've ever released. It's really cool!
3 Metallica Songs with a Hidden Connection:
- The Unforgiven
- The Unforgiven II
- The Unforgiven III
Also, all the song titles have the letter "E" in them.
True
It was a comment on the radio stations and record companies almost demanding they do promos and stuff or they won't help with airplay and such. In SKOM when they do the radio promo for winning money. "Stick it in your ass" " One dollar at a time"
Fixxxer is a great song
Without a doubt.
Easily guessed it!
Nice work!
@@NoneMoreMetal nice work and thanks to you for making great videos, man. Subscribed after seeing just one, keep it up!
I don't think Unforgiven 2 has been played live more than once either, but I may be mistaken.
Unforgiven II has been played live 6 times in total. The first time was on December 8th, 1997. The most recent time was on September 16th, 2015.
Guessed the connection at escape 🤘
Awesome! I wasn't sure how many people would figure it out. Good job.
I’m not sure you know what the word superstition means.
Are there any that are played 0 times?
Yes, there are. A decent amount actually. Some off of Load/Reload and St. Anger especially. I may publish a video at some point that touches on those songs.
Wait... Didn't To Live Is To Die appear twice? Seattle '89 and San Francisco 2011?
To Live is to Die has only been played in it’s entirety one time. They did play snippets of it in medleys on some earlier tours, but they’ve only ever played the whole song at the 30th anniversary show in 2011.
@@NoneMoreMetal well... I guess that's fair
I always thought Escape was a great song.
Yeah, same here. I guess even James Hetfield can have bad judgement sometimes. ;)
Yeah-he-yeah-ha!
To Live is to Die was in the Justice tour, sure not the entire song but it was played. So, sort of does not count.
Unforgiven 2?
Unforgiven II has been played live 6 times. Most recently in 2015 in Canada.
You forgot Mama Said.
Or do you not count it since that performance only featured James?
Mama Said has been performed twice live. On November 13th and November 15th of 1996.
FUN FACT: There is ZERO evidence proving To Live Is To Die was written by Cliff.
His name appears in the credits of the song, which means Metallica explicitly states that Cliff wrote part(s) of the song. What other “evidence” are you looking for?
@@NoneMoreMetalua-cam.com/video/JgiDPRFchdM/v-deo.html
When was the other 3 times they played - Human?
They were all S&M related shows. They actually played two shows in San Francisco when the recorded the original album and video, then a show in Berlin, Germany on November 19th, 1999 promoting the release of the album.
The final time was on November 23rd, 1999 at Madison Square Garden in NYC, also promoting the release of S&M. I was at the NYC show!
@@NoneMoreMetal Very cool that you were there! Thanks! 🤘🏼
@@TheNothing6If you want to be smart, where’s the other three times they played rebel of Babylon? Or just a bullet away? Or hate train? At least those songs were studio recordings.
Songs they've only played live once?
You nailed it! Good job.
we need more fixxxer
I dont think you're right.ive seen them in Pittsburgh back when they were still a thrash band and they've played escape and to live is to die, now I dont think Pittsburgh was the only place they've 2 of the 4.This was back in late 80s to early 90s
The statistics this video is based on come directly from Metallica. Your memory betrays you.
There's a few I know of.
Damage Inc and St. Anger
Fade to black and the memory remains
Enter sandman and king nothing
I'm sure there's a few more, but that's all I got.
I actually got it right 😂
That’s great I was initially worried that it might be too obscure for people to get. Nice job.
albums: and justice for all,st.anger, death magnetic,\,,/
I thought they only played Dyers Eve once
They've played Dyers Even 35 times. The first time was on March 5th, 2004. The most recent time was on November 20th, 2010. So it's been a while. I think we're due to see it again!
@@NoneMoreMetal thanks for the information, Dyers Eve is my favorite song by Metallica so I hope they play it again
But that is not fully true cuz they played a bit of to live is to die in 1989 in seatlle
Now I understand how history is made... in people's heads XD We live in a world where regular dudes become history, because the masses started praising them for their creations. That's quite religious, isn't it? ...but you won't get any salvation from Metallica, they are regular dudes after all XD
I can't tell if your comment is anti-religion or pro-religion. Nice job!
"Escape" is the ultimate anthem of all MGTOW. Read the lyrics
It's about a person who doesn't follow societies rules and chooses to be who they really are, despite being judged. It has nothing to do with that dumb shit you just said
And I can assure you that James or any member of metallica is NOT misogynistic or anti feminism
What is “MGTOW”?
To live is to die is on Seattle 89
They played a portion of the song, but not the song in it’s entirety.
Waste of time, you can't say this songs has connetion just beacuse they played them once, then a lot of songs that are played more than one time has a hidden conneciton too, or the songs that they never played.
Sure I can. In fact, I just did exactly that.
@@NoneMoreMetal Congratulations to you then.
i wanted to subscribe but ill not because you have now perfect number of subscribers 666
That's thoughtful of you! lol. But I'm beyond that magical number now, so you might as well come back and subscribe.
La vey de li vet bee vo teela bo
What a let down that reveal was.
OK for one Saint anger snare sounds like a trashcan
Escape is better than anything post AJFA
Yikes
anything after justice is irrelevant
L opinion
I dont care about anything about metallica...they should retire long time ago...to me the band is death as soon the justice tour ended cause they became bon jovi after that and become shit after bon jovi album
To Live is to Die is their best instrumental.
For me, it's Orion. But I do love To Live is to Die as well.
