@christopherwalker6056 just found this out too 4 years after the comment and I'm so glad. I love when my favorite artists work together and it explains why I like ariel pink so much after hearing him first time
Bobby jameson was a Los Angeles musician who died in obscurity despite being surrounded by a bunch of other colleagues that found immediate success in the 1960s. I've been a big Ariel fan for over 10 years- I think this is my favorite album of his is this one. Pom Pom is a departure from is core style.
ariel pink tries to capture the memories he had of listening to 70s and early 80s music when he was growing up which might be why some things sound familiar
this record is more "chill" compared to the others. I think once you hear Pom Pom and Before Today you'll be able to appreciate this more. Mature Themes is great as well
This is a great album! By the way, I think you’ll really dig IDLES’ new album, Joy As An Act Of Resistance. Please consider checking it out! Cheers man!
Oh mai gawd, you are reviewing "DTBJ"!!! You have no idea how much this album got me through Hurricane Harvey last year. It's all I listened to for 4 months. "Time to Live" is my JAM!! Not sure what to tell you about Stevie... He's a national treasure. I think it's fine to compare songs to other songs and musicians to other musicians... It's those who are incomparable that excite me the most. Will check out Johnny Hates Jazz. Straight up giggled at your claps during Bubble Gum Dreams!! :) YES!! Pom Pom is more of the "full Ariel Pink experience" and has the characters you were mentioning earlier on in this video. It's a very quirky album. "DTBJ" is more mature and stripped back. IDK... I think I like Pom Pom more that "DTBJ"... According to Wikipedia, "the album was named in honor of Bobby Jameson, a 1960s singer-songwriter who retreated from the music industry after a series of misfortunes. In 2007, Jameson resurfaced with an autobiographical blog that alleged wrongdoing on the part of various managers and record company agents, which he maintained until his passing. After Jameson died in 2015, Pink learned of him through a mutual friend, [and she pointed me to some of his UA-cam rantings. That sort of led me to his blog, which is like his unpublished autobiography, and I read that.] Pink said that Jameson's [life resonated with me to such a degree that I felt a need to dedicate my latest record to him.]"
lol the patchwork comment is dead on. all of his music is like that. listening to Ariel is like traveling through the history of pop rock radio while on acid and all of the songs are melting together
Two killer tracks (“Dedicated to Bobby Jameson” and the beautiful “Another Weekend”) and what an album cover. Gorgeous. Pom Pom is all out weird but it hasn’t got an absolute standout like “Another Weekend”, the track that comes close is maybe “Lipstick”. I guess I’m a fan of his pop side more than of his other sides.
Cool Discover! Ariels best album is Before Today under the name Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, in my opinion. Here's some suggestions for future discovers/reviews: George Harrison - All Things Must Pass The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis: Bold as Love Interpol - Turn On the Bright Lights John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band Paul McCartney - RAM Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf Radiohead - In Rainbows
Awesome video man, really started to think you wouldn't ever give it a go, but i'm glad u did! Hope u also enjoyed the album, i personally love these kinds of alternative records that have a strange nostalgia vibe in em. Can't wait for that Mac Demarco discover though! ; ) love ya man!
Quite enjoyed this review Mr. Number Six. Your enthusiasm is infectious and as you reference other groups I'm thinking the same thing. Brilliant. Bobby Jameson was an American musician who had a promising, albeit very brief career in the late 60's. He succumbed to poor management, mental health and substance abuse issues and fell into obscurity in the 70's. Entirely disillusioned by the industry, he never returned to his craft, but started an autobiographical blog in 2007. Ariel "Pink" Rosenberg stumbled upon the blog entirely by chance and was enthralled by the drama and intrigue which inspired "Dedicated" and was based loosely around Jameson's life. As Mark Kozelek said, if it were 1975 Ariel Pink would be David Bowie. His artistic output is prolific and unprecedented. I would highly recommend a listen to John Maus' 2011 album, "We Must Become the Pitiless Sensors of Ourselves". John and Ariel met at CalArts in '97 and became close friends. John was an original member of Ariel's earlier project, "Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti". Both Pink and Maus' entire catalogues are thoroughly compelling and worth further investigation. Cheers mate, kudos, and looking forward to many more listening parties!
also, more recs! check out Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion, Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest, and Jay Reatard - Blood Visions. these three were big for me 10 years ago
I am sure it is waaay too late for this, but I cannot recommend the Mexican Summer reissue of his early album "House Arrest" enough. It is remarkable, and a testament to the mad genius that resides in that skull. Read the liner notes too!
I preferred when your discover videos were more like this. Where you really listened to the music and gave serious thoughts an critiques. Really made it feel like I’m hanging with a friend and enjoying a record. Your newer discovers are fine and I understand a lot of it has to do with copyright claims and whatnot, but they’re just becoming gimmicky now. I enjoyed this format much more. Thanks
Can't do enjoyment anymore. If I'm not talking it's blocked. If I am talking it's still blocked. So I've got to make sure that no-one can hear any music whatsoever. Then there's the problem of thinking of things to say for the 80th time. That's a lot of talking. I think I've used up every anecdote now. And when it comes to 'talking about the music' that becomes more and more difficult. Great beat. Nice chord. Sounds like (insert band name). There's only gimmicks left. I'm just trying to get to 100. I would say not long to go... but it's still over 20 albums. The only way I can keep it up is to not talk about the music at all. That'll certainly alienate you! Ha ha!
The Mercurial Number Six I understand the dilemma. And I still appreciate the content, but is there anyway you can give more of a talking review of the album at the end of the video? I genuinely wanna know your thoughts on a lot of these records. Not just a bunch of anecdotes, but with your last two discovers or so it’s hard to know if you even liked it or not. Hard to tell when you’re making fun of it or enjoying it; if that makes sense. Just giving feedback. I still appreciate the content so thanks!
@@brandonburroughs7128 Always appreciate the feedback. Hmmmm...for instance... the latest Dis-Cover... which I am editing right now... I decided to drink a bottle of JD. Now, in the edit I fully appreciate that this was a TERRIBLE idea. I don't know if anyone noticed... but I stopped drinking for a good number of Dis-Covers. Probably for about half a year. And then I forgot why I stopped drinking during them. And I now I remember again! Ha ha! Now I have to salvage something usable from a catastrophe! On the positive side I am forever learning. I'm always a little disappointed that people seem to only want Dis-Covers from me. I mean disappointed in that when I get to 100 I'll probably have to close the channel down because I'll have nothing else that people want. In the meantime I have to try and make these videos enjoyable for myself rather than a chore! I understand where you're coming from. I might even do some 'revisit' Dis-Covers where I listen to an album again with the benefit of hindsight. That would probably satisfy what you're talking about? But... for everyone's info... there has really only been one album that I haven't particularly liked in the whole Dis-Cover series. That's not a bad ratio! But then I tend to see positives in a lot of music where other people might be immediately dismissive!
Lol I listened to Turn back and the clock, and holy shit yeah that synth melody is so similar. I love both songs tho, Check our Pom Pom, it’s in my opinion his finest work or Before today by him
Hey, I've enjoyed this series and was introduced to a few bands through it, as well as watching you listen to a few of my favorites; recently watching the Tame Impala series of videos made here, have you ever considered listening to the B-sides of Kevin's last two albums?
His girlfriend charlotte ercoli coe is also a musician as well. She goes under the name Charles. You can find her music on soundcloud under her real name. She also has a new single called "one spring evening" which also has a new video up on youtube right now.
I heard some Heaven 17 in there as well. With the odd exception, I wasn't a much of a fan of 80's electronic music ... and I'm still not. Vinyl = listening to music by a log fire. I have something physical that you can hold in your hands if you want?!
A cute puppy? I love 80's electronic music more and more as the years go by. We're getting to the point where I choose it as a default position! ... and Iron Maiden.
Women like to hold it and stroke it, so it's a bit like a cute puppy. I am a big fan of Giorgio Moroder and Kraftwerk but most UK electronic music left me cold. Whenever I feel in the mood of a good headbang ... I throw on "22 Acacia Avenue".
Not gatefold!!! Yer not backwards!!! It's black... Time to fold my laundry... This sounds like every song I've ever changed the station to get away from... Krappwork... Bobby Jameson is a lucky person, he'll never hear this... it's not rock enough to be noise rock, so it's just noise... SIDE 2!!! another WEAK end... I would have told Ariel Pink to delete the whole album after hearing the first song... they do have pom poms... probably dress up as cheerleaders when in private, too... 22 hundred is BABYMETAL level... this is 18 oh one level...
Ariel did contribute to mgmts little dark age album btw
No kidding!?? I did not know that. Very interesting. I love MGMT and I really dig AP. Cool.

I know everyone loves Pom Pom, but Dedicated to Bobby Jameson is my favourite by Ariel Pink.
starting the video now... excited to see what you think... this is a great album but yea you gotta find Pom Pom because it's a masterpiece
Another Weekend is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard
I always enjoy watching your videos. I'd like to watch you listen to "american dream" by LCD Soundsystem. another great episode.
This album is very very good and extremely underrated. It’s so versatile. Bowie, doors, mj. I think I’m in love with Ariel pink 😂

Finally! Thank you Mercurial Number Six! Hope to see Death Grips soon. Year of the Snitch perhaps. It's available on vinyl in EU right now.
Late to the party but he's got a new unreleased album called anonymous projections and I've fallen in love with every song on there.
Living for the Ariel Pink love. Try out his older moment, Before Today!!!
I have sooooo much more to listen to! I look forward to it.
