Google Pixel 8 Review | One Month Later...

- Reviewing Google's Pixel 8 flagship phone one month later, with longer term thoughts on the camera, gaming performance, battery life etc. The Pixel 8 costs £300 less in the UK vs the Pro, but is this one of the best compact smartphones? And how are those Android 14 bugs doing?
If you're after a mini mobile, Google's latest should be tempting. Like the Zenfone 10, this tiny phone doesn't compromise - although the Tensor G3 still lags behind rivals for sheer power. The Pixel 8's camera is also missing some key features like a telephoto lens and Pro controls, which you'll find on its bigger sibling.
Still, some software quirks aside, I've enjoyed my time with the Google Pixel 8. Android 14 is packed with great features, battery life is excellent and that camera still produces some slick looking photos and video. Gamers will most likely want to look elsewhere, but the everyday performance has been absolutely fine.
Oh, and I haven't missed that temperature sensor either.
The Pixel 8 sports a sharp and punchy OLED screen, plus stereo speakers. Storage is sadly limited, but the design is premium as always. So once those bugs get sorted, this will be a formidable flagship smartphone.

Thanks for watching my Pixel 8 review - got there in the end! Semi-mixed feelings but I am mostly enjoying it, and it can only get better with some Google updates. Next up, the Pixel 8 Pro! If you've already grabbed one, let us know how you're getting on with the Pixel 8 below xx
What was that movie you're watching early in the video?
For battery life how much time did you test on mobile data vs wifi?

How long until it lands. Really want to get it instead of S23 Ultra but on the fence with the battery life issues I've had with my 7 pro
@@EoghanRussell1986 how long until it lands? What does that mean?
Love the 8, can't stop imagining if the Pixel 8 had SD8G2 slapped on, the battery life would have been literally unmatched with a comfortable SOT of minimum 10 hours easy.
Lol, that's not how it works😅

Engineers, please explain why the back of a phone needs to be made of fragile slippery glass?
So here's the thing. A lot of things engineers do are hardware and software related. Most know bugger all when it comes to aesthetics and those of us that do, are way too annoyed by the "creative" teams' lack of vision around practical things, so yeah, the shiny turd around phone is likely a UX Research team not doing their work or a Marketing team's smooth brain. Hot take? Yes.
It cost more to replace it than if it were plastic.
1. Aesthetics. Looks more premium when it shines. However, it attracts more fingerprints. I like the way Apple do their thang on their Pro iPhones (Matte + Stainless Steel Combination) better. Glass is used, so it can also charge wirelessly.
2. You will put a case on your phone anyway, so why bother?

I gave my Pixel 7 to my wife and bought a Pixel 6a second-hand and I love it. The plastic back really cuts on weight. Hopefully we get an 8a.
The way things are now in the world, making it to 2030 would be a victory for us all
The post production tools for updating photos how you want them after taking are exceptional. I recently went back to a pixel after a few years and now realise what I was missing.
Bro everything aside my heart raised when i saw you play set to stun, im digging the new album so much
Been using for about two weeks. Haven't had any issues. Great photos and definitely runs cooler than my pixel 7. Not a gamer so I'm good with tensor 3 performance and I love the display. Easy to handle don't like big ass phones that you have to carry in both hands just to use it.

Loved the review! I recently got the 8 and so far I am loving it. The points you made were spot on, but all in all, no complaints. Well, just one actually: this thing is slippery!
First time I've watched your channel. Found your review informative and entertaining.
Coming from a Xiaomi Mi 11 5g the Pixel 8 definitely feels better in the hand with a hefty weight to it. Loving the pure Android system and AI. Agree about it being a slippery bugger had to put a clear silicone case on it to cure this had it a week and loving it.
Love your reviews! My friends are hooked on them too. Definitely the best on the internet! Keep up the great and highly entertaining work!❤ Xx
Loveeeee my p8... Got it a couple of days back at a good bargain price... I have had the pixel 7 and 7 pro but both had network issues... Being great phones none the less...
So decided to give the 8 a chance and man it feels like a completely different phone... Google has really worked on their hardware this time... Its a wonderful experience using it... Finally a perfect phone...

@@Shitor23 3 months back just during launch got a 2 weeks used phone at 54k.. At that time this phone was available at 68k after 8k bank discount.. So it was an amazing deal.. Still using it... Love this phone... No complaints...
I'm from pixel 7 and I'm good another 3 or 5 years!I'm so happy with pixel7 ...amazing!
I'm a fan of the form factor of the 8, as a 4a user. As I'm still happy with the 4a (battery is a bit rough after 3 years though tbh) I'll probably keep it for another year, but by then the 8 is probably considerably cheaper to buy, with still many years of software support left.
same as you! 4a user since Sep 2020. Still no complaint except poor battery life. Camera is not great but I dont need camera for daily use. I am planning to buy P8 this BF.
same here. my 4a has started to chug recently lol. really debating on upgrading to a zflip 5 or the pixel 8
100% agreed. My 4a is still kicking. I want to either wait another year and hope that the Pixel 9 has better performance or buy the Zenfone 10 if I have to.
Never watched your vids before and stumbled upon this one as I just got a Google Pixel 8 last week. Set To Stun at 0:42? Unexpected as hell lol, respect

Nice to see a one month review here, while I'm still waiting for my preordered one (the w8 is almost over 😅)

Came for the review, had a laugh. Brilliant video
How about the summarize web page feature that doesn't seem to be available outside of the US? Is it going to be available in the near future or did I just didn't configure my phone properly to be able to use it?
Have had the P8 since release day. Loving it so far, especially the size reduction (coming from a P6).
The P6 feels like a giant compared to this
Yes, the compact design is definitely a massive plus for me too!
Same for me I traded my 6 for 8. Im definitely loving the size it's perfect. 120 hertz bright superb haptics. Decent battery life for casual users who don't care to much about gaming.
Sounds good! Might upgrade my 6 to an 8
@@JackMcSomeone If you are thinking about it then it's a great decision I upgraded from pixel 6 to 8 2 weeks ago it's amazing the software was already really good but the improved hardware is a total game changer 120Hz 2000nits display, large camera sensor all are necessary upgrades it needed other huge number specs on other brands just feel like gimmicks around it

How would you rate this vs the Zenfone 10? I have the Zenfone 8 and looking to upgrade as the antennas seem to be giving up the ghost but unsure between the two.
Great review and I want a Pixel 8 but I'll hold off for now since my 6 is working great with Android 14. I know it's not as great as the 8 but it's good enough. I game a little but not a lot and am curious how it would handle call of duty mobile and when it comes out, The Division for Android.
Awesome and always we entertaining man lol. Thanks 👍
Really surprised to hear that you've got small scratches after only 1 month. I have a OnePlus with Gorilla Glass 4 (no screen protector) and it doesn't have any scratches on the glass after nearly 6 years.
Will you be doing a 'after a month' review of the new Xiaomi 14 (or pro). I understand it'll be difficult with reviewing so many phones. Thanks

Great phone...got some bugs. Most annoying I've had is when using Google Maps if I make a BT phone call in my truck the call takes over the screen and I can't switch it back to Maps so that the call is in the background.
Hi Tech Spurt. Currently rocking the seasoned Huawei P30 and looking for something pretty compact to move to. The S23 just felt too I-phoney with the sharp edges for me. Just how much of an upgrade is the Pixel 8 over the Motorola Edge 40? I know thats bigger but seems pretty lightweight. How do they compare? Camera much better on the Pixel? Cheers
Did you decide on anything in the end?? I'm still on the P20 Pro and looked at the S24 but my partner has the Pixel 7 and I loved it, so thought about moving over.
@@CookieMunstaaa I got the Pixel 8 but just sent it back. The hand feel, compactness, screen all superior on the P30. Size is a really big thing for me. If the S23/S24 wasn't so boxy with sharp edges I'd get them 100%. I'm keeping an eye out for the Pixel 8a now. One of these days I will upgrade my trusty P30.
Great review and if I had the brass I would got for the Pro model as I am used to something closer to 7 inches slapping around my thighs....
I have a Pixel 4XL on a SIM only plan here in Australia so run a very good phone cheaply which thus far has made the extra cost of upgrading hard to justify as this is excellent and does most things still. Considering an 8 or 8 Pro, I had a play with a Pixel 7 that was on sale a month or so ago and noticed the 4XL, three iterations earlier, is a faster phone, the 7 was a bit stuttery and the 4XL has a better display. 4XL having infra red face unlock, it recognises me in bed in the dark and I just love that. Face unlock being my favourite kind of lock system it makes me a bit hesitant to change given what you said about this one and I forget what the non infrared sensor is called but not as good as infrared.
Kindly tell us where do you get your wallpapers from?
Listening to Set To Stun. Mad respect dude
I had the Pixel 8 Pro and honestly, I returned it and went with another phone entirely. I loved my Pixel 7 Pro, but the charging / data port is dead but, the wireless charging still works. I still use the phone itself for pictures and for apps that I just have not installed on my new phone. Ended up going with the Motorola ThinkPhone. Definitely a solid phone. I do however like the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro but, when I used the pro right up-to the return window... Battery / SoT was horrid! I was getting anywhere from 2 - 3 hours MAXIMUM and that was with minimal usage, the modem was using damn near 70% of the power by itself and that was after all of the updates and learning pattern stuff. Maybe I was using the phone wrong or, got a defective unit and should have tried it again?
Either way, the phone itself though felt solid and honestly worked REALLY well outside of the issues I had with it. MAY end up trying the phone again here in a few months but for now, going to slam out some usage on this ThinkPhone.
Definitely appreciate your reviews and love the style of creativity you use while reviewing devices. Makes for some entertainment while actually talking about the specs and actual usage of the phone / devices themselves.
Did you try the pixel 8 again?
have the 8 pro myself, and while it could definitely be better in some areas, I'm absolutely loving it! Upgraded from a Xiaomi Mi 11 which only had a 4 hours screen on time, so the battery life is great for me!
The battery life you are getting is not because its pixel, its because the chipset. The chipset in mi 11 is SD888 which is the worst modern phone chip so far. It has the poorest energy efficiency and worst heat level so doesn't matter which brand, as long as it has SD888 the battery is very bad. However, for the price of pixel 8, you can get samsung s23 on sale with a much better chip SD8gen2, which is way more energy efficient and faster. And you have the reputation of Samsung of 4 year upgrade, compared to ridiculous claim of 7 years that Google promised.
Love the wallpaper my dude! and the pixel 8 is definitely what I'd go for if I didnt have my S23.
I have the 8 Pro... So far it's great for most things. Cellular data drains the battery way fast. 7hrs+ SOT on wifi. Overall I'd say I'm pretty happy with it.
Will there be a separate review of the P8 Pro ?
Still on my Pixel 4a currently and I feel like I go for an upgrade sometime soon would recommend this over the 7a?
My Pixel 8 Pro hasn't had a single scratch on it since I got it a month ago. And in a drop test on UA-cam it didn't even crack. As for cameras I find even at 50mp full resolution it's so detailed and doesn't affect dynamic range either. There is some artifacts in 50mp images in dark areas on some images but Google is apparently aware of this issue.
Got my Pixel 8 on release day to replace my old Pixel 5 and so far I have no regrets. I have had no problems with it so far and I am looking forward to the promised additional features when they arrive. I was put off of the Pro because of the size!!
How is the battery and size compare? I have the 5 and plan on buying the 8.
@@ianmena7263 same story
@@ianmena7263 I have the 5 as well and compared it in a store to the 8 recently and the 8 is the same width and maybe .5cm taller. Size is crucial for me and I was considering getting the base S23 or Zenfone 10 because they're almost exactly the same size as the 5. But with the 8 only being slightly taller, I guess I'll jump on it still now that it's $550 for BF sales and I don't see similar deals on the other 2 phones. I'm not a fan of the Tensor chip since it seems to be the least efficient chip on the market now, but as long as real world testing shows the 8 will get similar battery life to the 5, it's adequate even if it will take a bit longer to charge due to the larger battery capacity.
Imagine if this phone had a telephoto lens. Since I'm only planning to upgrade to at least the Pixel 10 series, Google better have a "Mini Pro" by then. Like, a direct competitor to the iPhone Pro (non-Max).
For once I'm genuinely excited to see how Pixel phones will have evolved by the next 3 to 5 years.
I just hope they finally fix the performance, efficiency and longevity of their battery life as well as charging speeds..
Currently using pixel 6. Have been broadly happy with it but call quality and network signal have been poor. Battery length has reduced substantially over time. Divided between upgrading to pixel 8 or galaxy s23. Looking forward to some real usage comparison reviews on both

My S23 battery life shits all over the P8 that I had tbh. Battery life on the P8 was awful for my needs
@@MJ-85 agreed. I returned mine. Also had the 120hz screen stutter/jump, AOD suddenly vanished, other bugs. Not the worst phone, especially speech recognition but unwarranted price increase for mediocre chip. Pixel-Beta phones need refinement to compete with the flagships. joke aside, pixel 8 is the only phone that made me tempted to upgrade my beloved pixel 4a. though gonna hold that thought after hearing the buggy android 14 experience, plus am definitely not ready to let go of the physical, rear, finger print sensor.
I have the Pixel 7 and I went to Best Buy to see and compare to Pixel 8. Yes, there is an improvement but not significantly. I'm happy with my Pixel 7 after it got the new update android 14 software version. I will wait the next Pixel 9 if the fingerprint scanner will get an upgrade to ultrasonic.
Same I'm pretty happy with the P7 but the optical fingerprint sensor is my main gripe and it's why I won't upgrade to P8. Like u posted hopefully they address it in P9.

Pixel 7 owner here, agree about the fingerprint sensor but my other issue with it is the wi-fi. As soon as you get a small distance away from the router the connection drops a lot and it's not very stable
When I'm sitting in the garden I've got no problems with my old phone (OnePlus 8t) but on the pixel 7 the signal keeps dropping out then reconnecting again

Hello, mate! I discovered your channel few weeks ago and you convinced me to get the Pixel 8, in a way. I love the device but I have suffered with the battery. Can you tell me what settings (did you cap the phone at 60 fps, etc) did you opt for? I'm really not able to get over 4 hours of SOT...
Pixel's adaptive battery will improve over time I guess based on your usage pattern..

Have had the Pixel 8 since release. After having larger phones was a bit worried it would be too small but not the case am loving the size. Only bug I have is that while it will receive and make calls via the car bluetooth (Ford Focus) the email notification and reading has stopped completely and that is something I do miss, hopefully will be resolved in next update or so.
Was the screen size ok for watching media? So happy it’s smaller but worried about the trade off on viewing experience

People who have the Pixel 8, are the bezels symmetrical?? From videos and pictures, I feel that the chin is still slightly thicker than the rest of the 3 bezels
Ive been using my pixel 3a since release. It has been my favorite phone. Pics beat any iphone. Considering upgrading
I traded in my Pixel 7 Pro with 512GB of memory for the Pixel 8 Pro with 1TB because the 7 overheated and resulted in a nauseous display flicker, especially when taking videos. My 8 gets warm, but has never overheated. Only serious problem for me now is that when off of Wi-Fi, reception is much worse than with my 7, which always gave me bragging rights because it worked everywhere.
Android 14 feels very buggy on the S23 Ultra too. Samsung are getting super quick with updates, the downside to that is they get all of Googles lovely early Android bugs. I've had YT Music crash or refuse to play since switching to OneUI 6 the other day too.
The last Pixel I enjoyed was probably the 3 or 4a. After that I just had so many issues (the Pixel 6 Pro especially) that I gave up and went to Samsung. Ironically, Samsung are the reason Tensor sucks. It's basically a glorified Exynos.
Hey Spurt buddy, hope you drank yourself well into the new year!
Here's a question if you may please advise..
Now that pixel 7 pro and pixel 8 are at the same price which one do I choose if a better camera, majorly for interior photography, is my priority?
I understand the difference in specs but are there any real world differences in the output?
Does the 7pro's additional telephoto lens give any actual advantage? Is the pro's camera software a real advantage over the regular one?

Great video! I'm doubting between the Samsung S23 and the Google Pixel 8. Similar at price and specs. Any tips to consider?
Pixel 8 user here. I was confused between the S23 and Pixel 8 too. I would say it comes down to your preferences. I went with the Pixel 8 because Bixby cannot replace the Google assistant. And Pixel is just so smart. I'm not a gamer, so performance isn't an issue at all.
@@alvinvazha1144 I'm also no gamer, normal user with smartphones but the camera quality is important as I use as my main camera. I have now a Samsung s20 FE, still works fine, never used Bixby in my life. Either way, you can use Google Asistant in any Samsung device.
I honestly think if Google threw a snapdragon chip in their phones they would be so much more appealing and have better performance and battery.
Tensor underperformers a lot compared to snapdragon and considering Google has full control over tensor chips the optimisation and performance isn't great at all.
The pixel camera isn't even that great anymore either and that's one feature they used to be praised the most for
I'd also rather have an infared sensor and a 3.5mm jack over a tempreature sensor?

I sent mine back - wanted it for the cameras after having Pixels from 3a XL - 6 Pro however after using a Moto 30 Neo beforehand i just thought it was way too heavy and thick! Add a case and its uncomfortable to hold. Went for the Moto 40 instead and loving it so far although havent given the camera a decent test really.
Shame about the camera downgrades. As much as it hurts me, I'll stay on my iPhone 11 Pro as the telephoto is actually quite nice and performance/battery life are still fine.
Would you recommend the pixel 7a or the 8?
I went from Pixel 7 pro to Pixel 8 on release for the form factor and that flat screen. Will be interested to see what Samsung have in store for s24
how's your experience so far?
Pretty good, a couple of bugs here and there (keyboard resizing after android auto) but I think it makes up for it in overall software experience, it's less janky but also less customisable than Samsung- more streamlined like the iPhone but for android

Can u say which one u prefer 7 pro or 8....please reply...i am looking for 7pro or 8...in ur opinion which one the best...i mean how about camera like things
I think between the 7 pro and the 8 the 7 pro has the telephoto lens so if you want to base a decision on just the camera quality - 7 pro, just as long as you don't mind the size and curved screen
Ive gor the Pixel 7 and there aren't big enough improvements for me to upgrade. I'll wait to see what they do with their next phone or what the next Nothing Phone delivers.
Upgrading every year would not make sense anyway.
Why would you upgrade every year anyway
I've also been using the Pixel 8 for nearly a month and love it! I actually upgraded from the Pixel 7 because the 8 is about 5 mm shorter and is class 3 certified for facial unlock in banking and password manager apps, which I rely more in the winter months when my fingers get too cracked for any fingerprint sensors (no matter what device). Speaking of the fingerprint sensor, I do notice it being better than the Pixel 7 when the fingers are not cracked (as of November here in the States).
The roughly 5 mm difference might not sound like much, but I definitely do notice the 8 being smaller in my pocket than the 7.
Only reason I would get the 8 is racial unlock for banking and apps. It's so random the 7 doesn't allow even though we have face unlock

I am going to make the switch to Pixel, having been a long time Apple user. The question is which one ?? I love the idea of the better camera lenses on the Pro, but prefer the smaller form factor. Any comments that may sway me ? Is the telephoto really that good? Could I cope with digital zoom on the Pixel 8 ?
I own both Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. If you prefer a smaller form factor, then definitely go with the Pixel 8! The hand feel is amazing and I find myself grabbing the Pixel 8 over the Pixel 8 Pro because of it. The hardware differences between the two are marginal imo when it comes to everyday use. I'd only consider the Pixel 8 Pro, if you plan on extensive gaming or feel the need for the Pro camera controls. Pixel 8 is also a steal right now! I scooped mine up on promo for $549.
I went for the Pixel 8 in the end. Great phone so far. I too got a great deal at only £499.
I've had my Pixel 8 for a month. It integrates with my pixel tablet seamlessly. I use a wrist strap I Frankensteined together using old bracelets when I cleaned out my jewelry box, got magstrips from Amazon and slammed them on my bogo cases. Not a gamer, pic quality is OK and it's so way to use. And it was free. So I spent $100 on a new phone, cases, and a new tablet, speakers and ear buds. Can't beat that.
wheere does bro always get the most imaculate wallpapers from?
So, A Pixel 8 or a Zenphone 10?
I need to make this exact choice in the next few days.
Cheers!
Stil using my pixel 6. Will see what next year brings.
Half the reason I even got a pixel was because it's one of the only phones with flagship features that's not five feet of screen size. I had an s20 for a long time and it's so nice to have a smaller phone again. I don't really game on the go (my switch is literally covered in dust) other than sudoku puzzles and what not. Perfect phone for me I couldn't be happier with it.
Hesitating between s23 and Pixel 8, i currently have the LG Velvet and like it so much, wanted an LG again to find out they stopped making phones
