Something of interest here is the fact that in 2022, minor league baseball players voted to unionize, so they, too, will be represented by the MLBPA, though minor league and major league bargaining agreements will be done separately. In March, 2023, the minor leaguers got their first collective bargaining agreement, which doubled their salaries, improved housing, transportation and meals, and gave them free agent rights after six years.

Great explainer, and excellent complement to the earlier episode! Showing the "regular pay" data really underlines the financial difference between the stars and "the rest of the cast!"

I like how modern fanboy make fun of Babe Ruth and Bill Russell 'playing against plumbers. My late grandpop was a diesel mechanic for three decades. He also had a reconstructed shoulder with plastic, metal and other parts. One day in his early 50's I took him to a public batting cage, 8 pitches for a quarter. He hadn't swung a bat in 25 years or more.
He stepped into the fastest machine, and hit frozen ropes all over the place. Never saw anything like it, before or since.

Epic story. Your grandfather sounds tougher than nails! I get annoyed every time I hear that plumbers argument honestly. Players had winter jobs into at least the 70s, and likely still would today if the reserve clause was still around. It also can't hurt to have an actual *off*-season as long as you stay in general shape. The sheer number of players requiring Tommy John these days is just absurd, at all levels. I'm sure throwing maximum effort year-round can't be helping.

According to Forbes magazine, we're already there. Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Magic Johnson and LeBron James are all in that category. I think a couple of the soccer guys are there too, but apparently Forbes only recognizes Americans.

@@big8dog887Mostly depends on the accounting: future value of cash flows from the contract(s) and what "financial engineering" can be applied to it. So yeah, we undoubtedly have a few already. Yet it's not what you make, it's what you keep! 😎✌️

The Dodgers front office, I would guess, expects the Japanese market to pay his salary in streaming and other revenue streams. It's a lot of money

Great follow up to the first video. Well done. I'm researching Curt Flood for my channel. Any interest in joining a group zoom to discuss his importance to MLB?

If there is a zoom during the summer months, I'm in. My baseball channel is on hiatus for a few months while I adjust to a new job. What's the name of your channel?

@@thebaseballprofessorMy channel is @theathletearchives - I like to talk about non-HoFers that have unique stories. My friend who is a Curt Flood expert is slammed at work right now anyways and summer would work well. I will contact you again in a few months and see if you're still interested.
