You put the peat moss with the eggs into a container with water and a little bit of aquarium salt. Salt because the fry are also prone to velvet disease and the salt helps prevent that. Your eggs should start to hatch within the first two hours! The eggs i pulled in this video should be ready to hatch any day now, i'll definitely record the process and upload it here so keep an eye out!!
@daffysreptiles Admittingly, after two attempts in years past, this year was definitely third times the charm, and this time it was done by learning from past mistakes. I will make a short post soon as it's been ages since I made a short video.
@daffysreptiles I've been curious about annual Nothos (regardless of species) for quite some time, and have been doing basic research on care, maintaining, and breeding them for my own personal enjoyment. That said, the bigger questions for me is what kind of water one needs in order to replicate said parameters (or is collecting rainwater best since it seems like the ultimate trigger)? Perhaps adding botanicals like an almond leaf would help aid in water acidity? Also, once again depending on species, how often does one need to collect eggs, and what to expect when the adults eventually run on empty and die? Apologies, but for me, those seem like big questions since Im new and plan on obtaining this lovely little gem and/or Gunther's in the future. Havent really decided yet.😅
1:40, being diapause and seasonal fish that only live annually, I also suspect that they aren’t nearly as affected to inbreeding. Their environment already bottle necks their gene pool, only limited to individuals found in puddles.
Yes I assume that’s true too! Also most of the individuals originally collected came from the same area so likely have a stronger “immunity” (for lack of a better word) to inbreeding. That’s an excellent point my friend!!
Hi dear, I have more question. After how long are the eggs ready for hatching? If they are put at 28 degrees after 2-3 weeks? Do you keep eggs in the light 12:12, to mimic their habitat? I wait your answers. Letizia
Hello, yes I keep their light cycle like the rest of my fish room when trying to hatch them about 10 hours of light and the rest is dark. And once you wet the eggs for they will begin hatching in 24-48 hours!
@@daffysreptiles I'm in the UK unfortunately. If you go online to www.microbiotests.com/nothobranchius-furzeri/ they sell nothobranchius furzeri eggs. However they're a new startup so you'd have to email them to get a quote etc. They're based in Belgium so shipping could be pricey but thought I'd put it out there as a potential source.
This is to cool, I just spoke with my LFS today and they would be interested in purchasing from me if I can successfully breed them. How old do they need to be b4 I can sell them and how much can I get for them each?
That’s awesome! If you’re selling eggs those can be sold right away. If you’re considering selling as already hatched fish I’d wait 2-3 months! Price can vary depending on location but a killifish usually goes for something around 9-15$ Good luck!!
I believe there are some other species of fish that have a shorter lifespan than killifish! Nothobranchius life span is usually around 10 months - 1 year!
How do you hatch them after 6months?

Love it! Gotta try it sometime! So far, just lovin' my japanese medaka and all the fry that they produced.
Medaka are lots of fun too! I breed them in small ponds in my backyard in summer!

Can you leave it in the tank to hatch?
I believe the eggs need to be dried to complete their development cycle so I don't think thats possible!
No
What is the name of the gene that makes them grow fast
I tried to look it up but could not find the answer to this unfortunately!
