Thanks to my Dad this song was a staple of my childhood. In 2017 I went to my first Pixies concert with my Dad. Front row of the mosh. Was bloody brilliant. We went again in 2020 just a week before New Zealand went into lockdown for the first time. Dad passed in June this year and we played this at his funeral at his request. I now have “this monkey’s gone to heaven” tattooed on my arm under a modified version of the Doolittle album art for my Dad. Miss listening to Pixies with him
condolences to you and a great song choice
Mis condolencias Amelia El día que me muera y me entierren sonarán está canción y "A forest " de the Cure.

Always some sob story in these comments. I call it bullshit.
28 years and still sounds fresh. That happens only with masterpieces.
sasarasasarasa
sasarasasarasa That is absolutely correct.
very true
yuppers its perfecto
actual music has nothing to do with time or epoch
Doolittle is a masterpiece and “Monkey gone to Heaven” is the crown jewel”
Throat, brow, and crown in fact
One of my best friends , a damn good man , a fucking legend just passed and this song hurts. He loved the pixies and this song is for him.
A man of culture may he rest in paradise brother.
Love you brother
May he Rest In Peace🙏
So sorry you lost your friend I hope you have good memories of happy times together
If he loved the Pixies he is in a good place now. I am glad he had a friend like you.
From a production standpoint, this is an absolute masterpiece. The way there are those stripped down vocals and bass during the verses, and then that wall of guitar, fuzzy goodness that kicks off each chorus, but tapers off to allow the singers to do what they do. This should be a lesson in every music book.
The Deal sister make it.
There are music books?
No matter your musical preference when it comes to certain genres, it's impossible to not admit this is a masterpiece.
Okay, you like this song, but personally, I could pick 2 better songs that I prefer
@@sexobscura If you can only pick two its still a good sign XD 3rd best song ever
@@sexobscura American Buffalo never said it was the greatest song of all time, they said it was a masterpiece. They were correct.
@krashd
Polls are great and all in good fun, but just because it's voted #1 doesn't necessarily mean it's COMPLETELY unanimous for humanity. I slso like Led Zeppelin, but Stairway To Heaven is far from their best song (and it's absolutely adored)
Wave Of Mutilation is higher on MY list
Im a Hip-Hop head but I was also a skater so I got my friends into Wu-Tang, Nas, Tribe, Hiero etc and they got me into the Pixies, Ramones, Air, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Iggy Pop, Modest Mouse and much more!!
The bass groove is dark and contagious.
kim deal strikes agaIn
So contagious. It entertains us.
Yeah just a brilliant track I play bass in s punk band when guitaist breaks a string can't help filling in with the bass line til he's really ready cool bass line respect
KIM DEAL
Kim deserves more credit....after her sacking, then her own band. Does she get to play with them now, or is she forever ostracized for the kinds of things musos are always in trouble for?
Harsh judgement and not fair. With alcohol legally swamping society and causing more problems everywhere...it's not fair to hold this one mistake against her. Hypocrisy...
“And if the grounds not cold, everything is gonna burn, we’ll all take turns.. I’ll get mine too.” Something about that lyric and the way he says it gives me chills. Great song.
Take heed

+Robert Garwood The best comment i've read all week
+ZERO94AIC I don't know about the rest but the Pixies definitely deserve much more recognition they were brilliant! I don't know anything about who is in the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame or if that even exists but it sounds like its full of crap like the Stones and other Bands who only really were any good at the beginning and longevity but mediocre output doesn't make a Great Band. I would suggest that innovative work and the fact that their work sounds as fresh and relevant today is more to the point!
yeah i think it's partly based on votes, either way, it sounds pretty dumb and arbitrary
Anne yes that's the feeling I get like old dinosaurs of progressive rock bands or the like or some new radio friendly, formula type pop bands....it's never the bands who really count who seem to get these 'honours'.
Anne Anderson yeah I guess that's partly because your first album has to be 25 yrs old, but there's still lots of old bands that are unrecognized/underrated
The breakdown with the god is 7 line is probably the greatest breakdown ive ever heard
6x7 : 42. Then go to the Way of the Tao and read Chapter 42. What Douglas Adams said about Zen cosmology - or how an uneducated person interprets it, like me. What Dionysus-Appollo said. It matters because he was the patron of (completely goofy) art interpretation. 😂😊🎉
The Pixies invented the 90s. Not a word of thanks.
I agree with this wholeheartedly, well put.

They built the 90s rock
When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily I should have been in that band - or at least in a Pixies cover band.

Absolument !
Special special band that influenced just about every alternative band you know today.
Not so sure about that. I would hope that Alternative music was diverse enough (which it was) that influences abounded.
What is your favorite band?
Matt Williams : When I was an impressionable and insecure youth, I'd say that my favorite was The Smiths (Which I will always enjoy), but honestly in my opinion, to me there is no such thing as a favorite band being that I like many, but I'd say for the most part, I like British bands better than I do American.
Lunatic4Bizcas My go to is Modest Mouse. I thought about not having a favorite band. That's a good point. There are so many bands out there I enjoy, and it may not be true to say I have an absolute favorite. I've listened to a little bit of The Smiths. I'm listening to the The Queen Is Dead right now. It's fantastic so far. Thank you!
+Matt Williams did they influence my fav band the disco biscuits
One of the most interesting groups in the history of modern popular music.
Rock'n'roll
these lyrics are pure art ... hard to understand but pleasing our brain
Very true. I think Pixies songs often SOUND emotional, but then they really aim for the brain. That delicate element that Kim Deal provided grounded the band's stand-offish coolness/coldness in a unique way.
my brain is very pleased.

Such intelligent music / art. Not trying to be wankey and elitist. Just a different level, 31 year later. Never gets old and leaves me in awe everytime

I'm Blessed to see them live twice. Both Great shows.
Bought Come on Pilgrim on release. Watched this video on Snub. Saw them every time they came through London. Walked seven miles through a public transport strike to see them at Kilburn. Was there as they expanded, exploded and flew away. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.
Why do I like this track so much! You know why because this monkey's going to heaven!
The Pixies hold a special place in my heart and i always feel like I'm part of some sort of society called "people with taste" thanks pixies
Never agreed more with a comment
Pure, raw and simple. The Pixies were EVERYTHING the new generation of musicians lack.
Most 90s and 00s bands were inspired by the pixies. They may not be mainstream and under appreciated but they are a real band's band.
dismissing entire generations of musicians is lazy and disingenuous. I guarantee in the 80s/90s people were saying the exact same shit about the music from a couple decades before compared to Rick Astley and ABBA

When I first used to play Pixies back in the day, I would shut the CD off if someone came into the room, worried that they would think there was something wrong with me. Pixies though taught me not to give a fuck if somebody thought there was something wrong with me, because their music was way more important than pleasing others. I am forever in their debt.
Pixies are one of those rare bands that host themselves in the architecture of your mind.
I love Kim's background vocals. Her voice kind of reminds me of Sandy Denny.
Kim Deals voice is a moment in time
im so happy ive requested this song enough at work that it now plays randomly once or twice a shift....great song !!!!!!!!!

I just wish this song was more popular today, it's just so relevant.
Kim Deal’s got the ultimate rock bass tone🍻
I think we (the generation born in the 70s) were very fortunate to grew up listening to Nirvana, Pixies, Ramones, Bad Religion, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and so many other bands, unlikely this generation.
im this generation, still here!
pop music is for those idiotic 14 year old girls who cant get off their phone to so much as say hi, and think tik tok is an important part of their life, and speak in that slutty tone.

Was introduced to The Pixies late 80's by a former flame when I lived in Boston , MA... I turned 54 in December 2019...this music, while it still definitely resonates, leaves me feeling anxious, maudlin, and afraid...seems like I can go "back" mentally and FEEL what /how I felt then. I don't want to die... BEFORE I have lived!
Carry on...
This monkeys definitely gone to heaven
Simply one of the best bands from ever. Unforgettable
Best thing Pixies ever did was to implode and give birth to The Breeders and then Belly. This song is their best though.
This song is so brilliant. Evolution versus creation. Hole in the ozone. Pollution. The contradictions. The humor. Just brilliant.
komme periodisch immer wieder darauf zurück: "best song ever"
Has it been 28 years, sas? Seems like 28 seconds ago.that's how powerful this is.immortal.
Arguably the most influential Alternative band of all time. Unreal.
some long time ago there was this website that had 2 college girls live streaming every day or so. It was one of the first live streams i ever saw way back then, 80s or 90s. And when they came back the next year they had more students and in the clip for the show/streams they had this song. Thats where I remember it from. Just heard it for the first time in years on another video and saw the title and came here.
These guys and gal understand balance. Grunge themes. God is seven hits soooo hard
This song is about how humans destroy the natural world, and how we only care about our own society, and how we don’t consider the impact of our actions on the environment. Pixies had a statement they were trying to make, and half the people who hear this song dismiss it as nonsense.
pixies wrote this for harambe, they were truly ahead of their time
One of the reasons I stay alive...is to listen to the Pixies!
If man is five

"f Man is 5, if Man is 5, if Man is 5
Then the Devil is 6, then the Devil is 6
The Devil is 6, the Devil is 6 and if the Devil is 6
Then God is 7, then God is 7, then God is 7"
Don't know exactly how, but this clicked in me ..
One of the best lines I might have hear, actually
*heard
Its because it is the actual numbers that correspond to Man, the Devil (who was the first creature created...before Angels and Man and is therefore 6), and Man was supposedly the third, Angels being of Spirit and serving only the Will of God, don't seem to feature as highly. I think it has to do with which have Free Will. But not having any reference books on hand I'm not going to attempt to explain numerology.
Maximus Destructus I beg to differ.
One of my favorites also. Another is a line from "Can't Hardly Wait" by the Replacements : Jesus rides beside me.
He never buys any smokes.................
you have a limited grasp majickal numerics
I see a lot of people saying they discovered in the 90s when they were younger or with their parents 😭 I just found them on youtube in 2016 in high-school, no big story lmaoo

That video was shot at a funky loft space in the warehouses of Boston's Southend, called the "Rez", whose occupants were super cool weed smoking artists. They played the Rat and bunch of small dives in the 80's. Morphine played at our loft nearby, another legendary 80's Boston band. But Pixies, they were special.
