Why G and not D? The viola is supposed to be one octave highest than a cello, right?
There are some versions transposed to G major to make the piece easier because it is originally written for a 5 stringed instrument. You can found both D and G major sheets for cello and also the respective transcriptions for viola.
That’s what I’ve always argued. I’m a violist and afflicted with absolute pitch (i.e. I hate transpositions that stray further from the original key). I know it was written for a 5-stringed cello (likely a violoncello da spalla), which means using a traditional 4-string is more difficult. But I argue this: if the traditional cello still plays it in D, why can’t the viola? Makes no sense to me. I’m incredibly stubborn and am learning it in D. Putting it in G completely changes the color.

To really properly play this in D, one should use a five-string viola (or cello of course). The color of having that high E string matters.
