I'm looking forward to seeing this match re-created in the new Timothee Chalamet biopic film about Marty Reisman, titled "Marty Supreme" and directed by Josh Safdie.
My dad was rated in the top ten table tennis players in Minnesota and played with some classic local heavy hitters like Doug Mayday, Alan Goldstein, Brandon Olson and Charlie Disney (all on par with Dick Miles). My dad revered Barna. My father would spot me 15points and beat me every time - and I was better then than now and a vast majority of people can't beat me.
My late dad came from barna era. He too had great skill with hardbat and a deadly flick kill with this style, as well as a solid chop game. In fact dad played sponge players and still took many scalps with those players not able to cope with the style. 😁
RIP Marty !Reisman's dead and probably he could still beat a lot of rubes...I watched him beat experienced sponge players when the game went to 21 points. His Table Tennis placed was on 96th and Broadway.
@billalphonso79 Barna died in 1972. Marty Reisman lives in New York and still plays hardbat - there are some recent clips on UA-cam (Letterman show, interview etc.).
I got into table tennis in NYC watching Dick Miles and Errol Resek play in 1969/70. I was a teenager then. I can tell you this, Miles was a former 10 times US champ at that point, and I doubt those local heavy hitters were on a par with him. He was holding his own with Errol who was probably in the top 5 in the US at the time. Outside of Joo Se Hyuk, Miles is the best chopper I have ever seen. The people playing at the club were the veritable cream of TT in the USA. Cartland, Bukiet, Boggan
@georged2011 I don't know your level, but you'd have to be a serious club player to have a chance against Marty Reisman - even today, he is still playing around USATT 1900. The best hardbat players have a higher rating than 98% of tournament players using "modern" rubber. Technique is more important than equipment.
@@randsp3c709 Except a top hardbat player would probably eat you for lunch. Bet you. I used to be acquainted with the US Open hardbat champ. He'd destroy you spotting you the best spinny Butterfly sponge with the fastest-rated bat.
barna perfected the backhand-don't forget this was well before sponge and stroke technique particularly the chop was the rule of the day-my dad watched barna play many times in england and he used to tell me stories-despite being injured in a car accident in 1935 which required a platinum plate in his right arm-he was never quite the same after although very competetive thru his forties.my opinion is that the game was more enjoyable to watch before the deceptive sponge bats.love the video.
The winningest table tennis player is not Viktor Barna, but a woman, Angelica Rozeanu, who was 6 times in a row World Champion in Singles (1950 to 1955), 3 times World Champion in Women's Doubles, 3 times World Champion in Mixed Doubles, and 5 times Teams World Champion. She won a total of 30 medals in World Championships between 1937 and 1957 ! ua-cam.com/video/IK2ZD9JCtpM/v-deo.html
Other players were Alex Shiroki, Braithwaite, sometimes Reisman, and Miles and Resek. I started with Inverted and switched to hardbat after a long layoff. I knocked off Dennis Barish the US Junior TT champ once. I've beaten the U 2000 hardbat champ and have won matches from the current hardbat champ and am the current North Americann Seniors Open Champ in a Doubles division. Hardbat can hold its own with inverted, you just have to be very good. Watch Richard Gonzalez play Liha and Hardbat.
I watched Carlos Ko play with hardbat. He was the US Open hardbat champ and a 2400 - 2500-ish sponge player. He was probably 2200+ hardbat. It's fun to watch.
People on the internet (mostly Americans) says classic table tennis before sponge is more exciting and engaging or the spectators...I can't see why. Too slow, too little movement. The modern games make you sit at the edge of you chair and hold your breath.
There are always people on the internet that say X is more Y than Z. In fact, that sort of thing was going on before the internet. It will probably never stop. I can only shake my head and say... well, what _can_ I say?
The Chinese were horribly unfit when Reisman played them in the 40's and 50's, and he took note of that fact. In the 60's they started killing everyone at the table, and coach came up to him who remembered and said, 'See, no more unfit Chinese players'.
The Chinese still boast of having fat players in their squad such as Fan Zhendung who get away with the backhand dominant style.1929 World Champion Fred Perry went to dominate Wimbledon using his supreme fitness,Fan would only make it in sumo wrestling.
..and the best inverted players have a higher rating than 99.9% of hardbat player. And on the international level the best players ARE the inverted players. The reason why hardbat players are difficult to play against is because inverted players rarely ever play against them. They are used to the spin generated by inverted rubbers. Look at the technique and footwork required in this video and then look at the footwork in modern table tennis. They are barely the same sport.
I beat the first hardbat player I ever played, and never lost to one since. This was back in the 70's. (And I wasn't doing speed-gluing). Perhaps my game was suited to them: a whipping loop-kill off the bounce, both wings plus a backhand punch-flick bullet that never came back. Never telegraphed whether it was a drop-shot or a firecracker. I also played hardbat sometimes; and had a DIY 3/8" thick acrylic lacquered racquet. Not the best thing for chopping, so I didn't; I just hit with it... _hard_ ... and counted on the percentages adding up.
Waldner got knocked off by Johnny Huang, who was using pimples with sponge lol.Carl Prean is a monster with pimples. If you play against a pimples out player who knows what he is doing, you had better be prepared. You might have more spin than he does, but he likely has better control, nasty dead ball blocks and chop than an inverted player. Gonzalez regularly beats 2600 players with Sandpaper rackets. I've beaten 2200 players with a pizza paddle (cut off the handle lol). So watch out folks
Even I can beat them with such techniques in those days. They maybe good enough for School Competition nowadays. Not to mention matching with chinese players from China.
+Lar M With a hard-rubber racquet? Reisman would not only beat kids half his age, he once even told the scores _before_ the match, with considerable accuracy.
Puros viejos malos, no se comparan al nivel de hoy, si estuviesen vivos ni siquiera aguantarían un saque de los campeones actuales. Nivel amateur en ese tiempo.

Barna's backhand flick is hilarious!
Rest in peace Marty,
we will allways remember you

Soo timothee chalamet will be that dude on his upcoming film , interesting
you can say whatever you want. but in the old days people dressed with style.
Marty Reisman died yesterday, Dec 7, 2012, at age 82. Much too early.
Wow winningest is a word
lol perhaps thats part of English in the past such as words like noob, hyped, cool (slang), etc in modern English were not used in the past.
Two legends of the sport.
Barna was only 60 I think when he passed away and Marty passed away in 2020.
marty actually passed away in 2012
RIP Marty !Reisman's dead and probably he could still beat a lot of rubes...I watched him beat experienced sponge players when the game went to 21 points. His Table Tennis placed was on 96th and Broadway.

Marty Reisman lives in New York and still plays hardbat - there are some recent clips on UA-cam (Letterman show, interview etc.).
Marty was still playing 2000 level with old school hardbat against spinny sponge...in his 70s and 80s!

fascinating!!! They break a lot of modern day rules (such as staying low) but it's still a very high skilled match.
Marty's overall form seems to resemble modern form the closest compared to the other vintage guys

The game has changed for the better cant wait for the day when hardbats are no longer allowed . To slow

This is some bad ass shit! Thanks for the post - wow!
killer backhand!i'm wondering if they are still alive...someone should interview these guys
What is that spin by Barna at 0:27 in? That move set table tennis back lightyears.
And the way he pulls up his pants right after haha
Great to see the Barna flick at last.

I think hard bats are deceptive, I cant stand playing someone who uses one,
R.I.P. Marty
画質凄くいいですねー!
this is like ma long vs joo se hyuk

@Deobfuscator I think I believe you...
Respect to the OG's but as a modern player seeing this is hillarious. How much the sport has evolved.

Why do they look like twins?
What's with their stance? o.0
The game is soo much better now. Since the advent of high level topspin.
@Siegbert Müller
0:25 0:46 Maybe you're good at that.
Victor Barna, greatest table tennis player ever lived. Waldner, Ma Lin and Wang liqin have to be excused
Is Ma Long the greatest now?
1:22 --> forehand topspin: the origin

there is still table tennis w/o spongeless bats, buts its called differently nowadays
جميله قوى البنطلونات اللى مرفوعه للصدر هذه
no sponge.
their footwork is so lame, especially compared to that of modern Chinese top players

Marty Reisman just died this morning, sad day for table tennis...
sad for table tennis that almost no one remembers him anymore at least in europe and asia.
varnas flick is better than fan zhendong
at least you can be sure, fan would have hard times given Barna's racket and trying to beat him so
Barna was 37?
He looked more like 67!
i had no idea people where chopping back in the day
That is ping pong in weekend club.

damn pingpong players from 1960's are so thin LOL
They still don't earn enough to eat decently in the US :^(
awesome pants xDD
@georged2011
You wouldn't even be able to beat Marty Reisman today... Your match would look like that recent McDonald's commercial ;-)
LMAO at the technique......
WOMBO COMBO
0:26 that little spin was cute
0:27 too much testosterone....
Hmmm. I'm not sure that's the case.
WTF in the past they didn't know the word footwork
your dad?
Was it a show or was table tennis only played by weirdos 70 years ago? Oh wait, it still is...
