- Jake never deserved the negativity pushed on him. He portrayed the role of Anakin Skywalker as best as he could, and he did a fantastic job. I wish 'fans' were nicer to him because I feel the treatment he received is the reason we don't see him at celebration and cons today. His enthusiasm and those nice memories of being on set probably burnt his feelings towards Star Wars, which saddens me. I was bullied for liking it Star Wars, I can't even imagine how Jake must have felt having starred in it. Either way, you are Anakin Skywalker, and that's something no one can take away from you!
Hope you enjoyed this behind the scenes look on the casting of Anakin Skywalker and everything that went into the process of finding Obi-Wan's apprentice. I still wonder what things would have been like, had Qui-Gon Jinn survived the fight with Maul.

I fully agree. Really looking back on it those other boys who auditioned lucked out by not getting the role. I am sure some were sad initially but I wonder how they all feel now.

Ikr! As my grandparents once told me, it is awesome to get something you like but it is even better from others hearing about your great news. So basically by Jake Lloyd getting bullied and humiliated by everyone, it goes to show that just because he becomes successful doesn't mean he will recover from this hatred. That is NOT right for a kid to get so hated and it is not nice at all! It makes him feel so bad and not happy to have others still be so cruel.
I could see that Anakin would become Vader and take those kids out one by one xD

It pisses me off that the fans ruined his childhood. The film wasn't that bad. It has alot of flaws but it's still enjoyable. And the majority of the Fandom at the time were over 21. I get that their vision of star wars was different but still, no excuse to ruined his moment. The kid did awesome in role of anakin.

Jake LLoyd was a great Anakin in my opinion, and the poor kid went through so much for this movie. He said in an interview that, for a while, he literally had up to 60 interviews a day. He was like 10 at the time. People hate on his character too much because of him and not because of other aspects that he had no control over. As a fandom we need to stop personally attacking everyone, no matter how seemingly bad it is. The gatekeeping in the Fandom has become a huge problem and I feel that we all need to have a more active role in removing the toxicity from our community. Oh wow that turned in to a long rant, thanks for listening to my TedTalk lol : )
I agree. I really did like his audition over the others because he captured that younger, quirky side of Anakin. He didn’t necessarily have the gravity of the other boys which worked for the movie.
I hate what the ST did to the OT cast, I hate how Episode 8 became a test for separating evil people from good people, but I feel nothing personally towards the ST cast. In the end, it's just movies.
Maybe it’s because it’s the first one I watched and the memory’s from it but I actually liked episode one (could also be because of natalie Portman tho)

Sad news for Jake Loyd: he now has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, but good news is he is receiving treatment and has support from his family 🙏🏻

That’s so sad , I loved what he brought to the first movie and thought he did a fantastic job , I’m surprised Lucus didn’t cast him in more roles later on .
It was easy to see he nailed that screen test .
Anakin Skywalker I think they should have done this route. Phantom Menace -> Attack of the Clones -> Clone Wars -> Revenge of the Sith -> Darth Vader prequel.
Why? Well, I would have love to see how Anakin becomes a Jedi, then his days as a padawan, then the clone wars, then his turn to the dark side, and last but not least seeing him what he does as Darth Vader before A New Hope.

That kid Devin was best one in my opinion. He had childlike innocence yet there was some darkness behind the shroud.
They were all very talented especially considering their age and I hope that they get there time to shine one day. 🙂

I get why George chose Jake. Personally I think his acting and especially his expressions were solid.
@Tyler Durden honestly for Jake's age and his role in TPM he is probably one of the best kid actors I've seen. Sure other older kids can act better but for Jake's age, he did a pretty good job in my view at least.

As someone with acting experience, the blond boy seems like the best actor in a vacuum IMO, but his performance isn't right for Anakin. Anakin is supposed to start out innocent in order to make his fall more tragic. Jake wasn't the best actor, but he was the right choice.

Devon was the best. Even the way he said “I won’t always be” almost hit me home like the sad realization you’re going to have to grow up and face the additional awful that lives in the world and the boy like wonder is bound to leave.
3:10 THAT was the perfect way to say that line. Notice Natalie’s natural reaction to it? George must have been too busy sipping his coffee to notice this kid was the perfect choice for Anakin. Especially the way he said the line at 3:19.
I think Jake loyd did the best its explained that anakin was a humble boy, in a comic leia reads shmiss diary and reads about all the good deeds anakin had done as a child. He even protected child slaves from non slaved childs that bullied them. Jake was the best. (Just my opinion btw)

I kept rewinding Devon’s takes because Ohhh my goodness! How could a couple seconds pull so much emotion out of me! I hope there was more than just those readings that they audition for because that boy had something about him! My goodness! Jake was good but Devon had something different about him almost exactly like Anakin. That was beautiful work he did!

No disrespect to Jake Lloyd, he's already had more than enough criticism and I enjoyed watching him in the film but man honestly Devin Michael would've been *perfect* for young Anakin! Honestly I feel like Lucas was surrounded by yes men.
Devin Michael:
First of all, appearance wise, he physically looked like a young Mark Hamill. Even if Anakin had Zero lines in the movie, he would've been an epic Easter egg or Cameo.
Audition wise, listen to him interact with Natalie Portman, unlike the others, he gives her something to latch on to and she responds with a giggle, instant onset chemistry.

See, I thought the same thing at first, but the reason I think Jake was chosen as the chosen one is because he’s supposed to start out as an innocent young kid who over time and circumstances transforms into a Sith Lord. But I totally see what you mean otherwise

Same. Idk what people are thinking but George wrote the characters the way he did and Anakin the character himself is a bit arrogant, angry, lost, everything that lead to him becoming Vader. Hayden played that very well.
At that point Lucas was looking at entire picture of trilogy, he needed Anakin to be cheerful and innocent to make his downfall even more impactful. As time passed it even went to show how Jedi were guilty of him falling to the darkside, giving so much more depth to the franchise.

I think Jake had that innocence to Anakin that would make the audience go "how could this become Darth Vader." Anakin wasn't that rebellious kid yet that had the darkness in him, he was with his mother and loved the people around him on Tatooine despite being a slave. He didn't know anything else from that life so he was kinda content with it. It's not until he's part of the Order that he learns there's more to life and at the same time he's also being stripped of what he knew, which causes that darkness and rebelliousness to rise.

Thats why darth vaders character is so great. He didnt start out as some little shit kid who was super rebellious. He was an caring dude with a massive heart who liked to adventure and have fun and be around the people he enjoyed. His character is amazing because he started out so great, but its such a tragedy of how broken he got over time.

It was Anakin tinkering with the toy in his hands while he was talking to Natalie that sold it for me. Anakin was an excellent mechanic, and him scrutinizing over the toy or whatever he was holding was so much like somebody who analyzes over builds and searches for improvements to be made, which Anakin excelled at. He was a smart and analytical kid, but he was also playful, which he portrayed in his "I won't always be" kid. Anakin did not know he was special or think he was special. The way he nonchalantly stated "all my life" portrays that humbleness. He was a real kid doing what he loved to do the most, and George saw it.

Quality of people hasn't actually deteriorated all that much since the 60s if you think about it three generations soon to be four now have been like this, it might be a sign that some people are just more careless than others in this generation. But overall just remember that there are still good people in this world and that you aren't alone man.

In Jake's case it wasn't only the fans. What I have heard is that he was bullied relentlessly at school after the TFM came out (out of jealousy most likely, kids can be such little s***s), and was forced to do tens of interviews daily in the weeks after said release which obviously burnt him out at such a young age. Anyone would break from that kind of pressure.
His parents should have changed him to another school.

That poor boy didn't deserve a fraction of the hatred so many people directed at him. He was just doing his job with child-like authenticity, and I genuinely think he nailed what the character was supposed to be: a wide-eyed, innocent boy whose optimism hadn't yet been destroyed by the cruel galaxy. It was meant to contrast with Anakin's later descent into darkness, and adds to the tragedy and horror of his arc. Every time I see Vader, I think of that sweet boy he used to be, and I just feel... very melancholic. His story is outright depressing, both the character and Jake himself.

I remember seeing the screen tests of the three boys when The Phantom Menace DVD was released. I think Jake Lloyd did fine in the role, especially with what he was given, but I agree that the blonde kid screen-tested better. Seems like heard there was something to do with maybe demands by his parents or something as to why he didn't get the role. The third kid didn't test well at all. Jake definitely didn't deserve all the crap that he got. Poor guy.

Something I like about Jake’s acting is the way he talks. He talks like a young boy with big dreams. It reminds me of the way my brother used to talk when he was younger.

People hating on actors because of their roles it THE most stupid thing a person could do. If you hate the characters or something take it out on the people who made them or scripted them. The actors simply do what they are told to do. Like with the actor for Rose in TLJ, I hate that movie and rose but I would never lash out at her since she only acted what others scripted for her character. Unpopular opinion: I actually liked Anakin in the Phantom Menace.

Jake did an AMAZING job. I really felt like there was no way this kid could become Vader! He nailed being a slave/ kid from a small town who knew nothing about the galaxy at all and had to learn on the fly. You can really see it in his acting that he still was that small boy from a desert planet who only wanted for the little things. For those who hated on him shame on you! I'd like to see you at 8 take on such a MASSIVE role.

I like them too. For a while a get caught a little in the hate wave for them but deep inside I still like them. That's it's because I understood since the beginning that the prequels are a different kind of movies and stories. We can compare them to the original trilogy. Prequels serve the purpose to tell us the start of the Skywalkers stories. After the sequel trilogy, I feel more happy and safe to tell people that I'm a fan of the prequels. After all these years, I concluded the prequels don't deserve the amount of hate they receive include Jake Lloyd.
It's a real tragedy what's happened to Jake. He's since suffered with Schizophrenia and his life and really gone down hill. I hope he's getting the right help and can recover from his experiences and leave a more fulfilling life.
