    For anyone curious, the initiator was comprised of 6g NHN over 4g pressed CHP to act as a small booster.

      Very nice! How do you assemble your detonators? I used to hold the bottom of my ETN/SADS detonators with pliers during manufacturing but I'm a tad bit afraid if it were to go off that'd I'd be pretty hurt.
      I thought about having a plastic bottle cut, put a wooden piece in as the base with a small hole to help hold the detonator upright, and fill the surrounding area with sand to absorb shock and help hold it upright.
      Do you think that's a good idea?
      Do you have a rig for detonator assembly?

    • @ExplosivesLaboratory
      @ExplosivesLaboratory  4 роки тому +3

      Yes, we too have a rig similar to that. Depending on the initiator, wether it be just a small detonator or a boosting detonator like this one, we have a block of wood with pre-measured holes to keep them in place during assembly. Then we just carefully press in the initiative explosives, until the device is loaded with a designated amount and ready to be fused.

      @@ExplosivesLaboratory Thank you for the reply. Is there any sand or anything else to absorb the shock? The hole in the wood can't be too deep or else the wood would become shrapnel. So since quite a lot of the detonator is sticking out, do you guys have anything else hold it up? I'm mainly worried of the concussive force taking out my hand or collpasing a lung (it's happened before to others).
      I'm thinking if I had sand there it'd hold it up better and also would absorb a good amount of energy making it harmless to my hands and face. With face shield, eye protection, and leather gloves of course.

      @ExplosivesLaboratory  4 роки тому +4

      I personally use wood meal and fine saw dust instead of sand, since we do a lot of lumber processing there is an abundance of it available.

    the cone angle must be 90° and the correct stand-off must be 3x the diameter ;-)

    • @ExplosivesLaboratory
      @ExplosivesLaboratory  3 роки тому +9

      Yes we are aware of that. This charge was unoptimized and therefore not very effective. Future experiments will be better.

      in modern HE-MPAT shells quite narrow cones are used

    • @SSS-cp1op
      @SSS-cp1op 3 роки тому +6

      A cone angle does not have to be 90°. It’s most effective that way but there is a pretty big tolerance in angle.

      @@SSS-cp1op very true. In fact it’s all about symmetry in wall thickness. Mfg’d cones and the OEMS only wanted .0003” variation or better. .0005” and above were duds.

    Nice, although not perfect, I love the frequent uploads tho! Also it would be interesting to see EnergeticHeretics hypophosphite explosive, should make a video about EFP and try a pretty long standoff distance unlike EH did XD

      Do you believe any of your formulations would’ve done a better job against this target? What do you roughly calculate to be the velocity of your Sodium hypophosphite containing casts? This particular ANNMAL I used was around 5,500m/s VoD, so at the lower end of the power gradient required to make an effective unoptimized shaped charge like this one…

    • @tetrazolelover
      @tetrazolelover 4 роки тому +1

      @@ExplosivesLaboratory I'm not sure, I did not test them on such thick targets, I guess that the VoD of some of the denser melt casts I used was over 6000 m/s, just a guess.

      Yes this is 50.8mm think hardened steel plate, not exactly easy to penetrate…lol. However, where there’s a will there’s a way, and I’m confident we’ll puncture through this target eventually.

    @Ꭼxpl๏sives Ꮮab๏rat๏rƴ You have a lot to learn young padawan.
    You have no viscosity w/ your NM and AL which is a big reason your yield is approximately 20-40%% lower yield than it should be.
    Biggest mistake is you're using AL 'as your sensitizer' instead of a much better and much more powerful readily available material.
    The AL plays no role in your charge other than sensitizing your NM when using it as a directional charge "shape charge".
    Might I suggest what would work a lot better?

    Hey man, I'd like to ask; Does a shaped charge NEED a liner or can the explosion still be directed with just a V-notch? I understand obviously not having a liner will severely reduce its penetrative power, but if someone were to make a V-notch in their explosive charge, even without a liner that V-notch will make the majority of the explosive energy travel in that direction right?
