I saw Ophelia wrap yarn around cheap clothespins that are wooden to place colours beside each other. This will give you a visual that’s small and workable to pick for new projects.

That's me. That so much me.
Also, I've found the opposite problem with yarn weights. I know what I have, but the pattern, especially a pattern from a yarn company, recommends a specific yarn and doesn't necessarily say the weight with a number. I did the math on grams per meter of the recommended yarn and the yarn in my stash to find one that was close.

My aunt and uncle live in the Denver, NC area so when I learned you’re in Concord, all I could think about is the outlet mall! I actually sort by fiber > weight > color. But since my natural fibers are nearly all DK and thread, while my artificial ones are worsted, my yarn stash wouldn't be that different had I sorted by weight. Thanks for the vid!
Sounds like a great system for organizing! I have very little DK yarn, I mostly have worsted and sport weight. But I love seeing them all organized by color! 🧶🧶🧶

This video is timely as I just placed a huge yarn order for my 2021 projects. How do you organize your leftover yarn? That is such a challenge for me. I have a big basket of leftovers.

Hello, thank you for posting this video, it’s been both refreshing and relaxing to watch it and yes, inspirational to! This is exactly the process that I am undergoing myself right now, with a small apartment, and finding a way to re-organize and restructure the entire living space, as well as to accommodate some form of designated artist studio/crafting space. I have a question related to “yarn “…. Do you have any tips or suggestions how to establish whether a particular unlabelled chunk of yarn that’s still useable contains wool, or might just simply be a poor quality of some form of a synthetic fabric because of the somewhat rough or scratchy texture? I don’t like to throw yarn away, no matter what the quality unless it’s completely unuseable and it certainly would be nice to have a way to determine what each fabric is in order to not make a mistake and blend it with the wrong fibres into a project. Thank you.!!😊

Hi, Elise! Thank you for your great video on yarn organization! I do organize my yarn by weight the same way you do, but need to buy more storage containers to put my yarn in.... since my yarn stash has grown out of control in the last few years. :)..... Also, in an effort to reorganize my craft room, I thought that shelves, like I saw in your video, would be helpful. Can you tell me where you purchased your shelves? They look really nice in your craft room.

These are great ideas. I have thousands of skeins and could never catalog them all. I have Ikea storage for some, but some in plastic bins, some in vacuum bags, & cloth bags. I have a very large craft room,, but it is FULL. Any ideas for me??? thanks.
I think when you have a large project like that you take it one small section at a time. Even if it took you six months to go through it all, you would know what you have. You could donate or sell yarn that you no longer love and keep only what you absolutely love! 🧶🧶🧶

Thank you for your video. I had a couple of questions just to clarify. Is the pencil the correct size for checking the weight of the yarn or is there a tool for that? Once I get the weight of the yarn and I want to weigh it to determine how many yards there may be, will all yarns no matter the brand be measured the same in yardage? I use a lot of different brands. I try to save the label but after years of stashing stash LOL...I have a lot that I have no clue as to what is other than it's color...eek
It doesn't matter the size of the pencil or any other round object. You try it with different sized round objects. As long as they don't taper at either end it will measure them accurately. Hope that helps! 🧶🧶🧶

The wraps per inch method, won’t the number depend on how thin or thick your pencil (or any other tool ) is ? If you use a thicker pencil, you will get less wraps per inch vs a thinner pencil. Unless I didn’t quite understand.
I had to do it for myself to prove that it doesn't matter the thickness! I tried it with a pencil and then I did it with a ruler. Same number of wraps! 💓

I’m guessing it matters how thick your pencil is...
It actually doesn't! It took me a while to wrap my brain around it, but the width doesn't matter. It will still be the same number of wraps per inch no matter the circumference.

The way it made sense to me was imagine if there were two people walking on two different tracks. One track is 1/4 mile and the other is 1/2 mile. If they both walk around the tracks 4 times, it's still just four times, even though one walked one mile and the other walked two miles. The distance doesn't matter just the number of times around the track.

So, I'm wondering why a pencil width???
It actually doesn't need to be a pencil, just something that has the same diameter along the whole length (or most of it). It's a nice tool to keep around to always know what weight a mystery yarn is. 🧶🧶🧶

The diameter doesn't matter. Even if something is wider as long as it's the same from one end to another like a dowel. It's the number of wraps and it won't change if something is wider or narrower. I hope that makes sense.
