  • Northern Hokkaido is brutally cold and today was no exceptions! We’ll visit Lake Akan’s Ainu Kotan, the onsen town Main Street and some ice fishing on a super frozen lake! Of course I freeze and run to avoid the wind chill -40℃
Where is this? Lake Akan Ainu Kotan, Hokkaido

The Ainu village, Ainu singing and Ainu shops at the beginning of your live stream looks extremely familiar. I recall walking towards it from our Onsen hotel one night last Mar 2013 when it was my first time in Hokkaido. Back then I don't know what the Ainu is and was just introduced to them during that visit. If that Ainu village is near Hotel New Akan where we stayed for one night, then that is the area I was in.

I'm bummed I missed this livestream -- I love Lake Akan and the Ainu Village, which is a little corny and a bit touristy. Most people focus only on Sapporo when they visit Hokkaido, so John, thanks so much for exploring other parts like the northern coast, interior towns, and now, Akan Park (Japan's Yellowstone). That's actually not far from Kushiro where you can see the amazing crane of winter... and Kushiro is just a coupla hours drive from my mom's hometown of Nemuro on the eastern tip of Hokkaido. But, I bet it's pretty scary driving with all the snow. Thanks again for your diligence and willingness to showcase the unseen parts of Japan!

some random info, Lake Akan is a very popular onsen town in Eastern Hokkaido. normally in other years, even with these temperatures, this place should have over a hundred tourists wandering around the streets during the day, some staying at the onsen ryokans, some passing by heading to or from the area between Lake Kussharo and Lake Mashu area (Kawayu onsen up north, Teshikaga/Mashu onsen down south). the lake is known for these moss balls that grows spherical called Marimo. that big ryokan at 11:45 is the original resort of the popular Tsuruga resort chain in Hokkaido. there's 3 ryokans along that street. 11:45 is the main one called Yukunosato, next to it to the east is Wings (13:58 and 34:21), then there's Besso Hinanoza further down the block. (you can see all of them at tsurugagroup dot com, some of them are quite exclusive and luxurious). the people in ice fishing tents are fishing for wakasagi, these tiny little smelt-like fish are great to fry up in oil and are really tasty.

You can see the mark of Snow-Owl everywhere. Snow-Owl, for Ainu, is the angel of God and the king of forest. Do you know ANIME "Golden Kamuy(Deity)" ? In Tokyo, Shibuya,Ikebukuro,Nippori, etc many places names from Ainu. It's said, Origin from northern Europe, more than 2,000~3,000 years ago, all the way to Hokkaido.
