My first visit to Japan in 1984 our student/teacher group visited Koyasan in Wakayama and stayed in a temple for several nights so we learned about Kukai/Kobodashi. His story is a very interesting insight into medieval Japanese Buddhist history and its connection to China.
I love how the Japanese revere nature. The dream is to have a home here and slow down to a stress-free life. ❤ I realize that is not realistic since I am not a citizen, but it is nice to imagine. ❤ Thank you for enduring the heat to take us along with you. I have it on my bucket list to visit a temple in Japan. I remember the Hindu temples that I visited in Madurai, India when I visited in 1984. One particular temple was carved into the rock of a mountain!!! Amazing! ❤ I love touring places of worship.
That's sort of what my upcoming Japan trip is... a reset for my sanity, things have been a bit rough here. Can't say I'll do a pilgrimage but Japan is the pilgrimage.
I visited this temple last year, was way busier than it looks like it was here. I thought it was huge even before I figured out there was a whole other half of the complex a couple of blocks over.

I walked the Shikoku Pilgrimage in 2015 at the age of 62. It is a difficult journey but it was a very good experience.
