To be truthful, Fromsoft and the Souls series taught me a life lesson. After playing their games, instead of judging a problem based on wether or not I can do it, now I judge a problem based on how many times I’ll probably have to try.

ER was my first souls game too. I was drawn in by the trailer and the fact that GRRM was involved in the story. The name 'Elden Ring' made me think it might have a LotR vibe too, which some areas do. The Haligtree/Elphael has some very Peter Jackson-esque Elven architecture, and Leyndell gave me some Minas Tirith/Gondor vibes.
Also, I knew what Souls games were like, and I had this odd expectation that Elden Ring would be different by having an ever-evolving "faction war system" due to it being open world. Although I was a little disappointed it didn't have this, I realized a faction system is unnecessary and that its absence didn't detract from how incredible my first playthrough was. And now, 200 hours in, I am addicted to the PVP, the music, and the lore.
    Best $60 ever spent.

I think ER hit a good balance of appeal to both hardcore people of the genre, and the more casual player or those who didn’t previously like souls games. The world of the game itself is good, very good. So much that you enjoy playing it, and the difficult bosses is just a temporary road-block to get back to the world-play. And it has a lot of options for approach with varying levels of challenge.

For years I had admired the Dark Souls lore. So many great videos dedicated to the lore of these games but I never thought I would enjoy them personally due to their reputation of difficulty and my proclivity towards being less patient. But Elden Ring had such hype and excitement from the content creators I watched for the previous games that I gave it a shot. I fell in love with the game and its the only steam game I got full achievements for. This made me want to go back and experience the Souls series for myself, to see and experience them first hand instead of by proxy. I finished Dark Souls 1 and am almost done with Dark Souls 2 (Just need to do the Sunken King DLC). The games show their age when compared to Elden Ring but I love them and understand why they are so beautiful. So I am grateful to Elden Ring for opening up the Souls world to me.

I remember when the first trailer dropped for the game in 2021, after such a long silence from the studio that people even begun to speculate that Elden Ring might had been cancelled. And what an amazing trailer that was. It did such a great job at showcasing how incredible this game was going to be, that for some people, me included, it almost had the opposite effect. After the initial hype, I was legit skeptical. "This just looks way too good to be true, there is no way a game could be able to offer as much as shown here". And I kept that skeptical excitement all the way until the network test. That was the point where it sunk in, that holy shit, it looks like From Software will actually be able to jump this absurdly high bar they set for themselves. But even that was nothing compared to the actual full game. It's extremely rare, almost unprecedented that a game doesn't just live up to such levels of hype, but manages to exceed already unreal expectations. I'm convinced that Elden Ring and it's success will be considered as the turning point where From Software's game design philosophy went from an immensely successful and beloved "alternative path" in the gaming industry, to becoming something that won't just inspire the indie and double-A scene, but also the triple-A developer giants to actually put time, money, effort and trust into understanding and inplementing parts of it into their own games.

I still feel bittersweet about the open world.
On one hand it's fun to explore at first but gets tiring later on, obviously speaking from my experience. It's a tedious chore to get through on later playthroughs just because of the distance you have to cover and the setup can take like 2 hours on a new character (if you already even know where flasks etc. are).
In that time a decent player can run through all of the Ds3 base game and you can include al DLCs if you take sub 4 hours.
I have to say that the bosses really are great BUT I do sometimes have to ask myself if it's worth the hours that are needed to get to some of them, assuming the average person doesnt use a SpeedSouls save manager.
Don't take me wrong my criticism isnt that the game is too big, it's just not as compact as the other ones which I just enjoy more.
For me Sekiro is still the most polished and mechanically sound one out of all the From games but hey maybe the ER Dlc will just slam so hard that I wont have a choice but to put it even above that one.

I felt this way about the game for a long time. I played to NG+7 on my main character, and filled every single character slot with a 150 character. Played A LOT. It did become little more than a checklist of ways to make the game as easy and fast as possible. Grab the seeds, grab the tears, kill the big dragon, yadda yadda yadda.
Most recently I decided to make a character where I purposefully DON'T do that. I didn't run to the peninsula, I didn't immediately run to the smithing stones. I decided I would kill every roving gang of enemies I see, and clear every camp and cave I find. Within 2 hours, I had found 5 or 6 different encounters I didn't remember, used consumables I never had before, found new ways to bully enemies I never bothered to fight.
It brought back a lot of the mystery and wonder of my initial playthrough. It grounded me, and made me realize that I don't have this game fully memorized like I thought I did. I actually really recommend it

If you know all the secrets and you are skipping areas you are essentially playing a dot to dot horse gps lol.

The thing is bosses unlike the explorable content dont get boring the moment you beat/find them once.

As a kid when I first started it I died, then I died again, then again and again. eventually I got so mad I quit the game... Finally I came back after 4 days and made it all the way to the big knight with the shield. I remember being so focus on the screen that my eyes were almost about to pop out. dodging and weaving and finally killing the big bastard. I felt elated and overjoyed. After I beat the big knight I stopped playing because if I kept going I knew I was going to die and then be all mad about it again. So I went on to play other games, but in that very moment I realized why so many people loved dark souls 1. So growing up and seeing all the souls-like games I'm glad that I had that little moment to understand why people were so hyped whenever Fromsoft releases a game. personally i think dark souls 1 and demons souls are the easiest in the series. And that's just due to the dated Ai. i would even say bloodborne and Sekiro are easier than dark souls 3. for me elden ring was just a little bit more difficult than than dark souls 3 because the bosses just aren't designed as fairly. With how long their combos are and how little time they give you to respond with an attack.

It is definitely my favorite compared to Skyrim, Witcher etc. I went full send on the game and got burnt out and just recently getting back into it. It’s just too damn good. I just wish the story was a little more engaging and didn’t feel so empty at the end cutscene. It’s just full of a million theories but in the end it is the subtle details after slowly learning the game that make it so good as well

DS3 isn’t the easiest in my opinion, it’s the most responsive and most balanced levels. It’s more about the mastery of balancing the bosses/enemies and players speed. The “simplicity” of Sekiro shows how good From is at mastering this dance. That being said, Madir, Friede, and Nameless are all top 10 hardest bosses in the series and maybe even Gael so it’s really hard for me to call DS3 easiest. I would say DS1 is the easiest especially if you use Drake sword and scythe. Elden ring might be easiest too with spirit ashes and broken builds too. Sekiro is easily the hardest

Nice video. I played and enjoyed Elden Ring obsessively. It was one of those games, very much like Breath of the Wild, that took over my life, to the point that I just wanted it to end so I could take care of my neglected real life responsibilities. In that sense, I think it doesn't have the replayability of Dark Souls 1, which was more concise.
I still can't quite tell if Dark Souls 1 on PS3 is my favorite game because it was my first, or because it's a better game. What I can say is that it will always be my favorite because of the gameplay and because the amount of players playing it lasted for so long, affording it nearly a decade worth of online activity.
Elden Ring is great, and a windfall for the company, but From needs to come up with something genuinely new to compete with the glory of Dark Souls 1. I hope they do it, but at this point I think it's actually impossible.

Enemies obviously positioned to ambush the player when the devs know the consequences of death. Quests you have to use a guide to know what to do and that make no sense while using the guide. Remember Margit's insta punish (punishment for what exactly?) after you sneak a hit in after one of his combos? Video is immediately wrong. Bloodborne is the foundation for DS3, Sekiro, and Elden Ring. The speed of combat in the game shifted what it is to play a souls title.
I was curious about what you thought ER has done to gaming but I'm guessing it's the usual. Hype of shit that's been in one game or another for years and pretend like..
    The Witcher 3
    Red Dead Redemption 2
    God Of War 2018
    Breath of the Wild
    And other games don't exist.
Red Dead in particular is still on social media and it came out in 2018. Every single open world title is compared to it and it's physics .
A direct comparison between the two shows just how lifeless ERs characters are. In Red Dead, They have lives. They go about their business independent of the player. The main character isn't a faceless voiceless vehicle for the player and people have genuine interactions with the player. The world is a living thing and anything can happen.
Even copy paste games like Far Cry have better world design. In Far Cry 3, a game from 11 years ago, you set a house or field on fire and there are consequences. Things burn, missions fail, etc.
In ER, you can't kill anyone but those the game allows. Everyone in the round table is protected unlike Demon's souls from 2009.
The story is fine but a repeat kd that we have seen over and over from this franchise.
Questing had to be fixed with a patch to add noc markers. Otherwise, you wouldn't even know you've missed a step unless you scour every inch of the game after the tired exhaust all dialog and beat a boss formula.
The world itself is so scripted and built for farming that there are no surprises unlike DS2 which thoughtfully changed things based on player choice. Same group of mobs walking about Limgrave are doing the same shit no matter what.
The bosses... worst in the franchise aside from DS2. There's really only 9 unique fights the entire game and Malenia is a product of get gud hype. You have stuff in this game like Erdtree Avatars which are really re-skinned Asylum Demons. Rollo and mini bosses like him are the Kapra Demon. The discount Bell gargoyles are here. Walmart Ornstein and Smough that you fight multiple times then they sandwich in a gank fight where they are resummoned until a generic health bar is depleted. Loretta is basically the first boss in Sekrio and they make you fight her twice! Margit just walking around the capitol. 37 ulcerrated tree spirits. The game is filled with filler.
Your first encounter with the Leonine Misbegotten is a fun learning experience. Then they force feed you him multiple times and then in a gank boss fight in Redmane.
Then there's the state of the game at launch. You know it was busted with mausoleums not working and people lying about having to use a specific rememberence on a specific mausoleum. Or bleed not functioning as intended. Or shit Luke mimic tear and hoarfrost being so broken, it has to be nerfed as it trivialize everything.
Or the fact that you can break Elden Ring in 10 minutes at launch without a wrong warp.
I have the platinum on Elden Ring and it's a great game worthy of its game of the year.
But it's not in any way life altering or game changing. It's not even the best souls. It's definitely not top 10 open world games and it's combat is pathetic compared to action games it's trying to be like. This game is cruising by on hype and good will and people that believe it's the hardest game ever played when games like Devil May Cry exist.

ER is for sure a ground breaking game just not in the traditional sense. It is a title that has rediscovered what it means to be a video game in that it doesnt hold your hand and point out every single thing on a map for you to do and there are dozens of ways to go about playing the game in what ever fashion you desire. Want to be some weeb samurai? You can do that. Want to cosplay Guts? You can do that. Want to literally obliterate enemies with magic Kamehameha's? You can do that. Theres an endless supply of ways to go about the game and 80% of the content you see in videos are completely optional and are nonessential to the game, Malenia, dont need her. Renalla, only for a different ending, the dung eater stuff only for a seperate ending. The whole game allows you to play it and do so many things within it its crazy by modern western standards that are all very stock and formulaic by comparison, look at every single ubisoft game over the last 10 years, theyre all open world, boring, bubble filled maps with no soul to them whatsoever and most every other game is on the fast track to follow suit. Elden Ring has re-taught what it is to be a game in that its not some pre-made and prepackaged game that will be the exact same experience for everyone involved. The game allows you to do what you want with it in all facets outside of the main story which even then is kind of all over and can be played anyway you want it to. Elden Ring is text book on how an open world game should be handled, its not a game with a compass and five thousand colored icons telling you exactly where to go to get whatever exact item or weapon you want but its also not a mindless sandbox with no direction at all, the game lets you go where ever you want whenever you want but will give nudges on whether or not you need to be a higher level judging on enemies health and overall difficulty. Regardless of being whatever a souls like is the game just sits back and let you steer the car for once and not have the developer force feeding you the same repetitive gameplay 5000 thousand times, looking at Valhalla on this one 150 hours to just beat the game is mind numbing but elden ring has been beaten within 3 hours by just focusing the main bosses and being as fast as possible not including glitches of course but just main bosses and beating the game can be done in a very short amount of time and that just proves the point that the devs dont care if you miss 90% of the content they want you to do with the game what you want and thats huge. The problem is that most other studios STARES AT UBISOFT* wants you to experience everything the game has to offer, not what you want, what they want you to so youll be in for an exhilarating 100+ hour journey of going to markers on a map following your GPS to a T just to progress the story. My point being is that ER is a game that has defined its own space as a fantastic game I just dont think other studios are going to do what Fromsoft have in they dont care enough to put out an enjoyable experience just one that makes people clock in more hours than they do working a month.

I mean look at steam achievements, people have done the secret and convoluted as hell ranni ending in their 1st playthrough more than the normal ending lmao.
Also your take is pretty meh like nothing you stated is new or special to elden ring, like it being text book open world? What like having over 150 randomly recycled bosses or copy pasted caverns and such, like what is a giant magma wyrm doing at the bottom of a cavern he is too big to enter or leave , or even the terrible balancing that ruins your experience of some areas, I could go on with issues it has but its tiresome, it's definitely a one of a kind amazing game but it shares many issues with other open worlds and issues of its own.

it’s perfectly fine and if that’s the way people want to play the game that’s their own thing, if you decide to do that and you spoil it for yourself that’s not the devs or my problem and it’s not an issue it’s the design. That’s no different from any other game in history, don’t know how to do a COD zombies Easter egg? Watch a video or a guide, don’t know how to get an item in a game? You watch a guide but that’s if you want to and if people do that’s on them. You can’t critique a game for the same issue that every game has in some sense which is just outside knowledge. I’m not going to say it’s cheating but you’re just cheating yourself. Along with that you bring up poor balance when in reality you need to go rank up your stats also the fact that dungeons are just there for funsies and are side content that have some items of interest in them and aren’t copy paste they all have different layouts a similar goal yes find switch open door but they’re all different, regardless of the logistics of a huge work fitting into the space lest we remind ourselves there are giants with fire and huge chunks of metal through their chest and a guy who using magic to float so he doesn’t crush is precious pony so if you really wanna get into the “realism” of things you can go ahead lol. And ER really isn’t the standard for open worlds by todays standards it by and large separates itself by not having 500 meaningless points of interest for the sake of wasting the players time hence why I mentioned Ubisoft who makes 99% of open worlds today because all those games are is climb radio tower simulator today. Plus Elden Ring is way more linear than you’d give credit for once you have a grasp on the map and what to do and where to go genuinely. The game for the most part is focused down a single stream of grace that you grace to the capitol. Regardless ignoring semantics the game has rediscovered what it means to be a fun and engaging open world as I said previously and is one of the best if not the best out there today just on the simple fact it doesn’t rely on pointless time sinks where you ride a horse for 10 minutes one way following your gps and has more depth to its customization than any other open world game before it in how you can play and approach it.

@@Koi_Swirl I say that because in the traditional sense Guts is a medieval character in a dark fantasy, juxtaposed to the typical position of weebs who see anything “Japanese” and want to mimic it and make it their whole identity. Sure Guts is written by a Japanese man but he isn’t in that realm of being a Japanese character nothing about Berserk is about Japanese culture it’s all European as far as style and art go. Along with there’s literally 1-1 objects and moves within the game to be Guts like the huge slab of metal and the knights cavalry armor.

I think y’all are giving it too much credit. It’s really just open world dark souls. So many reused bosses and worthless gear drops in dungeons. It’s fun and pretty good, but a bit overhyped in my personal opinion.
Cue all the turbo nerds telling me I’m wrong lol.

I resisted because of the hype. Closest I have gotten to a fromsoft game was fallen order I enjoyed the hell out of that. I finally got Elden Ring a couple days after Christmas because it was on a PS4 digital sale. Been playing games for 36 years since I was 5. I've never played anything like this. The discovery being rewarding almost every time (damn Asteria leaf) is commendable. I'm at level 106 with 150 hours in. First and probably only playthrough. I understand the appeal of NG+ but I don't think it will ever be for me.

Elden Ring is amazing. I heard alot about Bloodborne, but couldn't get into it. I couldn't make it further than a few hours into that one. I'm 150+ hrs into Elden Ring and still playing every day. And watching UA-cam videos about it when I'm not playing 🤷‍♂️.

I came in with DS 3 and have no played all of them except for Sekiro. I have hundreds of hours in Elden Ring. They got me excited about games again! I would complete a couple games per year as an adult, and now I constantly try new games and genres. Elden Ring is insane. The scope, the scale, the story, the combat and mechanics, the feeling of exploring and finding something new. I started a new game recently and found so many things I missed the first time through and I felt like I hit it all. Deserves all the accolades!

I'll be honest, I started with Dark Souls and didn't like my time with it. I finished it with clenched teeth and more then enough headaches but at least I finished it. It was enough that I was put off from any "souls-like" for a while. So when my friend said I'd like Elden Ring, at first I was skeptical. Of course this was the same guy who got me into Monster Hunter I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, so I bit the bullet and tried it...The moment I picked Astrologer, I didn't realize how much I'd break the game. It was like the revenge story I didn't know I needed. Bosses fell before, unable to withstand my arcane assault. It was at that point that I realized that Dark Souls wasn't hard, I was just playing it in the worst way possible for a first run.
None of the souls games are hard, they are only as hard as you make it for yourself.

The fact that Elden Ring is a brand new franchise makes it's success even more amazing. Botw, Mario Odyssey, and Ragnarok for example had lots of longevity backing them up.

My favorite game, it beat out Dark Souls, Dark souls wins Nastalgia, but the fact I introduce a friend to it and say "Wasn't that fun? that wasn't even 1% of the game" after completely finishing Stormveil Castle gives credit to the fact that It is a masterpiece.
