David Wiggins has a famous essay in which he argues that, pace the philosophical consensus on the matter, Aristotle can be read as allowing for deliberation about ends. 1 form of Happiness versus another. If a vocation, say, is considered an end in itself, rather than an instrumental good, then this position would make sense. But is the man choosing Holy Orders over Marriage, e.g., not thinking of the religious life as his best available means of achieving the Beatific Vision?
