So much emphasis was put on his unique style of piano playing that I don't think enough credit was given to his magnificent voice. Great, great voice and he did a terrific job on this song.
You’re damn straight, Miss Anderson. Magnificent is the word. Such power, such control…and it almost seems effortless. Dean Martin is another guy who makes it seem as simple and regular as 😢breathing.
William Cox I didn't know he played guitar too!! I love to hear him play the piano,. He makes it walk, talk, sing too!! He is the greatest piano player in the world. Love the Lewis Boogy...jdw
If you're a C&W or Rock singer and you want to be famous for a song, don't let old Jerry Lee cover it, because then it becomes HIS forever. I've been sitting here listening to JLL for hours and every damn time he sings a cover, its better than the "original." Every time.
Jerrry Lee has such soul and a truly beautiful voice. I saw him in person at a very small and humble club in London in about 1963 when he had to move there. What a magnificent performer.
++Kent Twitchell I saw him in London as well, at the East Ham Swimming Pool. (I guess they had some cover over the pool but I don't know what all was in the complex. He fairly rocked the place. It was in the days of the Mods and Rockers in the UK. I never spotted any Mods but the Rockers were all down at the front in their leather jackets, etc. The whole floor was shaking to the beat. A great night. However, he wasna singing any Country music then, and I feel that, despite his initial Rock'n'Roll fame, his greatest music was his Country songs that he completely made his own, with his unique vocals and his superbly matching piano playing accompaniment. This is what I come back to listen to - despite my youthful experience of his R&R.
I was born in 1961, My Father always played Jerry or Elvis in his car.. I think about my father when I hear The green grass home, Today I started loving y. Y win again...I thank God for my family, my MoMA. Jdw
I've listened to almost all the UA-cam versions of this song, and only recently learned the words and deep meaning. Then I went on to other things. A month later I realized that Jerry Lee's performance of this song is the very best. I feel that I have gone to heaven when he sings "...and there's that old oak tree, that I used to play on."
@@OthO67 I checked it out. Only found negative vibes from it. Mike Farris seems to distort the melody in an unmusical way. Jerry Lee's version is the best. Rest in peace, Jerry Lee !! We're gonna miss ya, Brother, but you live on, in UA-cam.
I will never get tired of hearing him sing, i got the Sun 45 record when it came out of Great Balls Of fire in 1957, i was young and into rock & roll but when i played the flip side "You Win Again" i about wore the record out and became a country music fan.
No wonder Jerry Lee can project the emotion of this song so powerfully. With the kind of wild life fife he led, he must be thinking " Coulda been me!...There but for the grace of God..........."
One of the best singers ever whether it be pop, rock and roll, gospel or country. God given talent. If he's not in the country music hall of fame, he definitely should be. Thanks for sharing the videos.
++Milton Moore Nobody else learnt to do what JLL could do, that's for sure. A combination of voice and knowing how to use it to draw out the emotion from a song and project it. As I've said elsewhere, nobody else at all in the Country field was near JLL for that apart from Ray Charles.
No body, but you Jerry Lee, I love the way you play the guitar and sing this wonderful song, I love your music man, too, me ,you are the sweet music man!
As you listen to this song Lee, I can only imagine what dad is saying to you. Im sure the "home" speaks to you as of your childhood home there at 1595 Malone Rd. that you're struggling to keep. The "old oak tree" is the many that are there. Stay strong like the oak trees Lee. Much love buddy!
Country music came before Rock n Roll, so of course, Jerry sounds country. Southern gospel, Blues, Country, Boogie Woogie, Jazz, Honky Tonk Bluegrass,, were ALL the genesis of Rock & Roll!
I think a lot if us underestimate Jerry's voice. people sing better standing up.. I never heard him sing like that. and I've been listening to him for a long long time being from Louisiana myself.
You make a very good point about standing up-- as he is such a confident performer, I'd clean forgotten about that. his voice sounds very much more mellow in tone here.
MOST CERTAINLY ONE OF THE GREATEST VERSIONS OF THIS ICONIC, OFT RECORDED SONG, WRITTEN BY CLAUDE "CURLY" PUTNAM, JR., WHO WAS BORN IN PRINCETON, ALABAMA IN 1930 AND PASSED AWAY AT AGE 85 FROM CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE AND KIDNEY FAILURE IN 2016. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A VIDEO OF JLL STANDING WHILE PLAYING A GUITAR, RATHER THAN PLAYING THE PIANO. I WISH HE HAD DONE THIS MORE OFTEN. IT HAS A SPECIAL CHARM AND AN OBVIOUS UNIQUENESS ABOUT IT. MY FAVORTE RECORDING HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE ONE BY JOHNNY DARRELL, WHICH CAN BE FOUND ON THE DC50s60s70s channel. NOTICE THAT THE SECOND TIME JLL PRONOUNCES THE WORD GOLDEN as "GOLDUN." IN DARRELL'S VERSION HE PRONOUNCES IT AS "GOLDAN" (With a "soft" A), AT LEAST ONCE. OF COURSE IT IS MOSTLY PRONOUNCED, AS SPELLED, "GOLDEN," (With a "soft E) MOST OF THE TIME IN RECORDINGS. JLL PRONOUNCED THE WORD RUNS AS "RUN" THE FIRST TIME, BUT GOT IT RIGHT THE SECOND TIME. [No big deal, obviously, but this type of thing interests me, especially in studio recordings, when several takes are made to get things right. Other times errors either go unnoticed, or someone decided to not go to the effort to get it right, for whatever reasons.] HOW PITIFUL WAS IT THAT NASHVILLE DIDN'T INDUCT JLL INTO THE CMHOF UNTIL HE WAS TOO CLOSE TO DEATH TO ATTEND THE CEREMONY!🥺😬😬😫 MR. JERRY LEE LEWIS IS PRESENTLY☄️🌠🌅"AT THE SOURCE OF ALL LIGHT"☄️🌅🌠
Yes we are so used to the great Jerry playing the piano and yes he plays guitar, it gives us the chance to appreciate his voice love his country signing.
Love this song by Jerry Lee so great he can sing so good any song I love his gospel songs the best now didn't know he had sung these.god bless you Jerry Lee love love you
this is the Best edition of this song, with the great JLL singng it, God Bless JLL he gave us allot of great music of all time .. 6-23-21 Beautiful voice of JLL ......
He was sobered up and Tamer at this time in His Life..I like him all ways..Such a sweetheart..Pretty song..He Loved His parents very much..This song reminded me of Mom and Dad
Finest version of this song I have ever heard. Thanks for sharing. I never heard him do this Live, but "As Far As I'm Concerned" came close in 2008 (London). R.I.P. Killer.
Just wonderful. I like johnny cash too and many others of that generation. It was a great time. godblessed singers, artist. I wish I cold live it once again and appreciate it more than I did then. You took everthing for granted when you are living in it (the time) and now I it isnt any more. Still miss those old days.......
Glenn Johnson Jerry Lee on guitar.Long time since i have seen this footage.Brilliant.This is the version that Tom Jones heard first and the rest is history...Thankyou so much for posting this, just brilliant
The only version of this worth listening to the original and certainly by a country mile , bless you 🙏 Jerry Lee Lewis and rest in peace ❤️🌹
Not the original. Try Johnny Darrell or Porter Wagoner
You cannot get better than best, and Jerry Lee Lewis is THE best ... God bless you Jerry Lee ... :o)
That’s debatable, Merle’s version is just beautiful?
I love Jerry Lee's propensity to do everything differently than it's been done before and make it sound better.
Jerry Lee may have been a real sinner but the man could sing and play. What a talent. May God have mercy on his soul.
We all sin.
The Killer, fantastic version and hes voice was one of the best of all artists
We never forget a legend!
Jerry Lee could bring tears from a dry brick.
Ditto
That's good. Should be a line in a country song.
Jack Belk man that is true
Well put true that one !👍
Really????
Jerry Lee could sure make his mark on a song and he sure does it here. What emotion. He was a music icon.
The man could bring a tear to a glass eye with this one.
Indeed my eyes have watered many times!!
This is just a masterful version. Communicating the howling grief of a condemned man
not grief...he is finally being set free......
In spite of being a founding father of Rock N Roll, Jerry can sound so country that nobody does it better.
William Cox I didn't know he played guitar too!! I love to hear him play the piano,. He makes it walk, talk, sing too!! He is the greatest piano player in the world. Love the Lewis Boogy...jdw
Damn right!!
Absolutely!!
To me Jerry Lee have always been a country singer.
So true
Probably one of the greatest artists that ever drew breath.
you got that right!
Amen to that
The Man The Myth The Legend Himself, The “KILLER”
I was lucky enough to meet him 7 times and walked with him in london england . Miss him a true stylist !
Absolutely one of the BEST!!
What a voice R.I.P. Jerry Lee!!!!
One of country music's greatest singers!
Saw Sir Tom Jones last night. He saw Jerry Lee Lewis perform this as Elvis guest and said he had to record it as soon as he got home. Beautiful song
If you're a C&W or Rock singer and you want to be famous for a song, don't let old Jerry Lee cover it, because then it becomes HIS forever. I've been sitting here listening to JLL for hours and every damn time he sings a cover, its better than the "original." Every time.
I love JJL he is a wonderful singer!!
You know this is the original right? Tom Jones covered this
+Kevin Nealon try Porter Wagner
+bryan phillips Ah yes, or Johnny Darrell according to Wikipedia, thought it was Jerry Lee Lewis for some reason
+Kevin Nealon no worries. I prefer JLL 's version
I don't know how this song could be done any better.
Jerrry Lee has such soul and a truly beautiful voice. I saw him in person at a very small and humble club in London in about 1963 when he had to move there. What a magnificent performer.
Kent Twitchell lucky you!!

He was so handsome and talented. It's true he literally owned any song he chose to sing and it was never done better. He's still great in his 80's.
Kent Twitchell I got to see him in around 1988 and he performed his heart and whole body out until he was sopping wet with sweat
Awesome
The most soulful country singer, in my opinion.
Him and george jonss
The best country singer

Hmmm, maybe you listened to it wrong.
🤣
This is great. Jerry Lee is so freakin good, no matter what he plays or sings, he is great

It's just amazing that Jerry lee can remember all the words to all the songs he sings!!!
One of the most covered country songs. Jerry Lee does it best.
He was at his best and looked healthy. First time I remember him performing without his piano.
The only singer I've ever seen that always performs better on live than on recordings
Tom Jones too is always better live on stage with an audience.
A master!! This and his Danny Boy are both without piano, the guitar was a prop ...and WOW that man could belt out a ballad!
What a great fiddler Kenny Lovelace is. In some Jerry´s songs, like this, he filles the feeling right up. Jerry really can sing country and gospel.
No wonder Jerry Lee can project the emotion of this song so powerfully.
With the kind of wild life fife he led, he must be thinking " Coulda been me!...There but for the grace of God..........."
Like no one else. He surely can get to the heart of a song.
HAS TO BE A GOD-GIVEN TALENT!!
One of the best singers ever whether it be pop, rock and roll, gospel or country. God given talent. If he's not in the country music hall of fame, he definitely should be. Thanks for sharing the videos.
Jerry Lee with a guitar , sounds good.
I saw Jerry Lee in Rome when he was just getting popular. That’s Rome, Ga, not Italy. Hell of an entertainer
Best rendition I’ve heard! 👏👏
What a Feeling
Sister said that at age 8 Jerry sat at a piano and started playing. No lessons, just natural rare talent.
Only the Killer can take such an aged classic covered by so many and still make it solely his.
Play on,Jerry Lee, wherever ye be.
this man is truly the MASTER all you pretenders.... look.. listen and learn
What JLL had is
unlearnable, as
are all GIFTS.
++Milton Moore
Nobody else learnt to do what JLL could do, that's for sure. A combination of voice and knowing how to use it to draw out the emotion from a song and project it. As I've said elsewhere, nobody else at all in the Country field was near JLL for that apart from Ray Charles.
just beautiful Jerry Lee sings with his heart & sole in it. RIP JLL love always...
No body, but you Jerry Lee, I love the way you play the guitar and sing this wonderful song, I love your music man, too, me ,you are the sweet music man!
These were the times of the GREATS, never happen again. So many talents of great music at the same time.
As you listen to this song Lee, I can only imagine what dad is saying to you. Im sure the "home" speaks to you as of your childhood home there at 1595 Malone Rd. that you're struggling to keep. The "old oak tree" is the many that are there. Stay strong like the oak trees Lee.

I don't think I've ever heard a better performance of this song
for all ages, for all times!
Country music came before Rock n Roll, so of course, Jerry sounds country. Southern gospel, Blues, Country, Boogie Woogie, Jazz, Honky Tonk Bluegrass,, were ALL the genesis of Rock & Roll!
It just looks weird with him not behind a piano. Im not complaining though. He, for me, is the best #LongLiveTheKiller
Multi talented.
I think a lot if us underestimate Jerry's voice. people sing better standing up.. I never heard him sing like that. and I've been listening to him for a long long time being from Louisiana myself.

Jimmy Lee swaggart
i saw a clip of him singing a gospel song . fantastic
He is unbeliveable. AMAZING!!!
Needs to be in the country music hall of fame
One of the best versions of the song.
Jörgen Mattsson yep. you are so right!!
I had only heard Tom Jones version before.
The Joan Baez version brings another level of emotions. I would say all of the big singers did this song and its lyrics justice.
