My Dad was playing smaller college ball all the way out in Davis, California when the tragedy struck, he rememebered reading about it, and immediately going to church to pray on all the lost lives, the affected families and friends, a community shattered....all of college football mourned...it was unthinkable, what Marshall went through to bring their program back...what a huge measure of resilience. Then again, we're talking about folks in the State of West Virginia...tough breed.
I come back to this scene time to time ..after years later. I enjoy film editing and they did a really impressive job editing this scene to capture every emotion the audience would experience 👏 bravo
Some people never played football or any sports won't know what a team means. You have to be in it at least once to feel the emotional after the win. I won't judge if this movie is good, but it's truly an impressive story.
Critics tend to be very simple. If its a football movie, they want to watch football, not what goes into it. If they want a war movie, they want to see shooting. We saw it with The Hurt Locker and Jarhead. Critics are bone headed and one dimensional. Critics are useless.
The whole critic “industry” should be thrown in a dumpster and set on fire. One dimensional, boring people. I have never listened to a single critic nor do I even look up what they say. That goes for movies, restaurants, etc. I listen to my friends and family 100%
Love how this movie addressed the question of why we play when it truly seems there's nothing left to play for. The saying 'don't give up' has gotten trite. This movie doesn't just show how difficult and important not giving up really is when there's pain, but also when meaning has been replaced by emptiness. Showing such a triumphant moment in this context really illustrates how very little of life entails winning but instead the pursuit of winning (even from the depths of tragedy).
Man I LOVE the drumline musical key-in at the snap of the ball. College football is its own thing, the original football, way better than the NFL. ITs just a different vibe.
I love that in the middle of such an exciting and emotional moment they squeezed in a joke. The Xavier coach grimacing at 2:00. Makes a great moment even better.
@@johnwaffleh2p70 Marshall is a part of West Virginia and you son are someone who just wants attention. By the way, you're still sulking over how Marshall beat WVU in the NCAA Soccer Tournament. So once and for all, grow up, quit bashing Marshall, and GET LOST!
Lowell Austin I don’t care about soccer and the fact that your using soccer to trash WVU is because we own you in everything and your just jealous that WVU is a good program and Marshall plays all their games on Facebook live if their lucky
WSAZ TV in Huntington would broadcast the Marshall games on a tape delay basis on the following Sunday afternoon. I remember watching this game. The winning touchdown did in fact come on the last play from scrimmage but it was a simple screen pass that the receiver ran in for the score. They took some liberties with the play in the movie as you can see.
this movie sends a very postive message and i love it and so does my mom this movie is mainlu about a team rising fromt the ashies and returning to the football field
ugenics back in high school, the drum line would play during 7th period and everyone would follow behind them. So boss. Unless your teacher didn’t let you
I was barely alive when tragedy struck Marshall. It wasn’t until many decades later I learned of it. There are many pictures in our family photo album from that day. I was tearing up a birthday cake with a “1” on it. While my family was celebrating that day, many families in the Marshall community were suffering a great tragedy. It always gets me in the “feels” that my first birthday and the Marshall plane crash are linked because they both occurred on the same day.

I love this movie. I've always seen the critics about this movie complaining about the fact that it's not a movie about the high stakes or winning a championship. No, the reason why i love this movie is because it's a movie about overcoming adversity and loss. It's about pressing on and moving forward. It's about getting beat down over and over after that loss, but still rising up again and again. That's the movie it is and it just so happens to have some football in it. That is why i love movies like We are Marshall and Rudy. It's about average people overcoming great obstacles in life.
That is SO cool! I'm from Ironton, Ohio, but my mother and several other family members are from Huntington. I am a die hard Marshall fan, even though I live in Duck territory (Eugene, Oregon) My Dd was a DJ for WGNT when we lived there. I miss it so much. This movie never fails to make me cry. My grandfather worked at a funeral home (don't remember which one) and he took care of the 6 players that couldn't be identified due to the severity of the crash.
My brother stole this movie from a rehab a long time ago. Is really good movie. So he says " We Are Marshall is going to be code for I relapsed again".
For anyone curious... It looks like they're playing Xavier University... And, for those wondering, no... Xavier Football doesn't exist anymore. Their football program ended in 1973.
Jack really helped bring Marshall back after that terrible plane crash 1970 without him football program would have been removed is not too many coaches take on a challenge like that
Personal foul roughing the passer despite the fact you hit him right as he threw the ball and there was no possible way to stop yourself from hitting him
isn't the football an NFL ball, no half stripe? Marshall played in the old University Division back then and the ball would have had a half stripe on both ends. Correct?
This is a great movie, but this might be one of the worst choreographed scene in any sports movie. None of it makes any sense. He went from almost being sacked to every Xavier being blocked at LOS. To 2 XU guys within arms reach to some CB blitzing him & the 2 XU DL’s disappeared completely. I’m so confused
As great a film this is things like this bug me. I guarantee they had football experts on set making sure everything makes sense so when you call “bootleg screen” it has to be a pass behind the line of scrimmage, the qb rolls out in 1 direction opposite of the play fake and probably throw it back to the other side of the field where the wr/back are with some lineman so he can run it in. If they want to throw it into the end zone call a play that could possibly make sense, if they want to make it easy for the audience to understand include “post” or “flag” or “drag” or all 3. Sorry, these things taint football movies for me.
How about the fact that as this play was filmed, the penetration/rush blew up a chance for the screen? And in reality, the screen DID work as planned? Yes, they Hollywoodized the ending, but the actual call WAS a screen.

Perseverance. Never give up. People today could learn a lot of great lessons from how Marshall handled adversity, tragedy, and then got back up again.

Kudos to the Marshal percussion section for nailing it.
Probably one of the most significant sports movie scene in decades.
