At 54, I may be one of 100 Gecs' oldest fans. The number of ideas packed into a Gecs song amazes me, and it excites me to hear how music evolves into the future-however much that future affords me.

I'm 61 and wild about them. Of course, I was an indie influencer 10 years ago, so I still keep up with new music. My friends are stuck in the musical 70s sadly. I can share my love of gecs' sound and vision with my younger friends, who still often say it sounds like kid's music, haha.

Laura's singing part on Doritos and Fritos felt nostalgic to me, like something out of a mainstream 2010s pop song

One thing I wanted to add is my interpretation of the song "I Got My Tooth Removed" from my perspective as a trans woman. I don't know if this is what Laura intended but it is what I got. In "Dumbest Girl Alive" she says "I got lighting in my veins, walk around like Frankenstein, I did science on my face, I'm the dumbest girl alive". I initially interpreted this line as in reference to taking synthetic estrogen and getting Facial Feminization Surgery. Through this lens, I view "I got my tooth removed" being more or less entirely about trans surgery. Much of the song is about how detrimental the "tooth" is to their life, and when getting it removed it was very traumatic, even leading to attracting flies. Many trans surgeries are very traumatic and painful and take a very long time to heal. Yet the chorus is so happy sounding, despite the pain and trauma of the whole ordeal the problem in their life is gone and they are able to live a happy life afterwards.
Anyways idk if this is actually what they meant by this but as a trans woman I couldn't help but interpret it this way. Who knows maybe it's just a goofy lil song and I'm over-interpreting, and there's really nothing wrong with a goofy song about stuff that doesn't really matter. Laura has many songs about being trans and transition that have helped me greatly in my own, and that's why she is one of my favorite artists. Queen, icon, legend 🏳️‍⚧️
And to you... This is a great video! I loved your interpretation of the album. I really appreciated your take on 1 million dollars, which I hadn't thought of before but now is totally my interpretation as well.

I remember the first time I listened to the album... the lyrics "put emojis on my grave" made me stop everything I was doing. I had to. It's just brilliant. 100 gecs' lyrics, in general, are way more interesting and, one could say, "profound" than people give them credit for and it's nice seeing someone pointing it out. Great vid!

I love the new Limp Geczkit. Laura Durst and Dylan Borland have created a masterpiece with 10,000 dolla bill y'all. Not only have they resurrected metal core and mall-core candy coated pop punk, but also brought back Ska in a big way. I expect there to be new albums to drop soon from legends like Less Than Gecs, The Gecsy Gecsy Gecstone, and NOGECS that were inspired directly from this album.
I rushed out to buy the cassette to jam all summer of 1998 from the stereo in my '87 Toyota Corolla while I drive cross country to eventually end up at the thumb wrestling world championships in Manitoba.
I'm 43, so I'm appropriate to call old, but I've loved every minute of all the Gecs albums. The obliteration of nostalgia, through forced overexposure to it, in order to build something new and exciting is amazing. Laura and Dylan break up all the songs that hold their memories of being young to put the pieces back together in the greatest of ways where it sounds so distinctly theirs and just shouts at the top of their lungs in their own unique voice.

also adding to your thoughts on I Got My Tooth Removed, the gecs seem to have had a fascination with the metaphor of a toothache representing the pain of a failed relationship since their inception, from Fuck Teeth on their 2017 EP which was about getting high and feeling scatterbrained in reaction to being broken up with, to Toothless which was included as a bonus track on the remix album that was about bargaining with the lost lover to keep the pain from setting in, to this song about finally confronting the toothache, trying to deal with it but putting it off and finally removing the tooth and saying goodbye

If you enjoy this, I HIGHLY suggest the godmother of the hyperpop style, SOPHIE, and her album Oil Of Every Pearl's Uninsides. Lot less 90s but still very much forward thinking, extremely well produced, hard hitting at points but beautiful and euphoric at others. She was an absolute legend, gone way too soon.

this album made me feel really wise. my immediate reaction as i listened was "this is probably the best music they've made, even though it doesn't feel like the first album, but it doesn't have to, right?" it made me really think about how much the "feeling" of music is connected to nostalgia of the time you spend with it, more than what it sounds like in your ears. when i think back to finding 100 gecs in high school, it was about embracing this weird explosive grating music from the internet, excitedly showing it to my friends and watching it grow on them, until it became the soundtrack to driving around at night to the loud crazy music that made us feel like teenagers. but i'm 20 now, all my friends are away at different colleges, and it wouldn't make sense to expect new music to add on to that same nostalgia, it should just be allowed to form the soundtrack to the memories i've yet to make that i'll be nostalgic for 3 years from now.

You brought up the 90’s a lot and I am truly shocked you never brought up Ween once. So much of the humor and versatility and energy that is Ween is also in 100 gecs. Now 100 gecs might not be listening to Ween, but I feel like they are both trying to do (not achieve) the same thing.
I am curious, what is Professors Skye relationship to Ween? I am scared it’s not a good one for no connection here.
ALSO the lyric “put emoji’s on my grave” on the first track is super noteworthy imo. There is so many layers in that, I love that line.

Haven't re-listened to an album so much in years. Probably 8 or 9 times now. Every time I'm smiling or finding something new in the production that blows me away. The attention to detail on every stem to mix it up just when you think you've got it nailed down or some niche joke reference to another style or song is incredible.
I used to replay cd's before I could connect a smartphone while driving out of necessity, like back then I'm just setting this on loop.
Beyond that though I'm just heavily connecting with the music, feels nice to be certain it's a 10/10 for me even if it's not for everyone. Just such a fun joyous silly extreme album.

I’ve only watched the first five minutes but I just want to say that I much prefer their earlier album, and it’s not because I don’t like what they did on this one. I don’t think that means I’m not a fan. This album was an awesome experience. Hollywood Baby by far my favorite 100 gecs song and I also really like 757 and I got my tooth removed. The only thing is that 1000 gecs had a lot more replay value for me. Wait a second, while typing this I looked back at both albums and realized I like pretty much the same amount of songs from both albums. The biggest difference right now is that 1000 gecs has had more time to grow on me. I think Hollywood baby being a single set my expectations higher than they should’ve been and I expected more bangers. Instead what I got was mostly just weird songs that feel like they were just having a ton of fun making them and being silly without really worrying about what people think or how much they’ll listen to them. Now that I think about it I love them for that. Ok i guess 10000 gecs is just as good as 1000 gecs and I proved myself wrong in the course of writing this comment but I’ll leave it all in I guess lol.

HOLY SHIT DUDE I was waiting so hard for the oingo boingo callout on doritos and fritos, for reference, I am a teen highschool student who happened to be really into electronic music and have a best friend really into 80's music. Naturally when he showed me oingo boingo I was blown away, I had simply never heard 80's music that didnt sound plastic to me, and Danny Elfman seemed so real. Anyway anyway anyway when I first heard Doritos and Fritos when it came out as a single I immediately caught the Oingo Boingo esque guitar plucking type sounds and it caught me off guard, but as you can imagine it quickly became among my favorite songs by 100 gecs. I'm not sure how often you get this perspective but while I'm here I might as well provide some personal insight on why I, as a younger generation kid absolutely love this band. A lot of sentiment shared by my generation, albeit some sticklers who seem to hate change, are letting go the idea of "cringe", it doesn't matter how one enjoys something at this point, and I think it is a completely fair way to enjoy something seriously as well as because it's simply funny. Doritos and Fritos for example, made me laugh my ass off at first. The silly off-kilter guitar plucking with the chanting chorus parodying pop songs of so many generations, through the hyperpop lens of turning it up to 11 and making the lyrics so wildly ridiculous was so funny to me. But at the same time, the music all came together in its own unique collage, something that was uniquely 100gecs. It almost felt that being so silly in this particular way, not only represented me but a whole generation, taking up utter absurdity as an alternative to nihilism. Many older generations get caught up in understanding it through "meta-post-postmeta-ironic-squared-to the second degree" when it's not like that to me at all. Rather, the audience shifting perspectives gives it it's meaning entirely. On the surface something can be so ridiculous it's funny, but only when you decide to let them cook and understand the artistry in absurdity, and what that means for our generation did it click for me fully. This is a recent revelation to me tho, and I simply enjoyed them from a production standpoint for the longest time as an electronic music fan and thought their lyrics were funny. I could talk about this for ages, and the idea of absurdity against nihilism has been interesting me lately. On a final note, I didn't know you were a french professor! I'm taking college french courses as a highschooler right now and I plan on going to France soon over the summer :D!!!

I really like your definition of Punk music. Not enough people acknowledge that definition and who the punks are in each generation.
Also great point about the distinction between being a fan and being nostalgic. I am glad I have made it to my 30's still being open to new music and artists I already like doing new things. I know early 30's isn't that old but I know a lot of people are pretty set in their ways only liking their old faves before they hit 30.
Loved seeing them earlier this month. Last I saw them was in one of the few shows that could happen in 2020 and they definitely upped their game, really great show. Anthony Fantano's recent review of their New York show does a great job explaining it.

Was never really a huge 100 gecs fan. I heard "Money Machine" and a few various songs from them around when 1000 gecs came out, and I thought they were catchy and a really neat concept, but more of a novelty than anything. For some reason though, 10,000 gecs absolutely gripped me. I genuinely love every single song on the album, some more than others, but now I'm deep down the rabbit hole. Ended up watching a 50 minute documentary on them, and now I've actually given 1000 gecs a proper listen and really enjoy that too. Their song "Torture Me" from their EP has been on my repeat rotation every day. I really didn't get it at first, but now they're one of my favorite artists.

Professor I have to say that you perfectly replicate the thoughts in the back of my mind listening to and taking in the lyrics. The lyrics really are the most underlooked aspect of this album. Like Frog On The Floor and you making the metaphorical representation of the frog being an unsual thing to find on your floor in the 21st century, with urbanization and whatever. With the track being full-on ska it really adds to that.

I must push back on the idea that this album is “90’s” because the specific styles of ska and nu-metal they pull from are more prevalent in the 2003-7 time. Looking at their work/what dylan has said I view a lot of what they do as a hyper-concentrated reconstruction of the early 00’s. You hit it on the head with that “crazy frog ringtone pop” because that also speaks to the heart of hyper pop and draingang. It’s grounded in the overdigitized sounds of that time which permeated through all genres in some way.

I have never heard a cis man be able to articulate something, I a trans women who greatly relates to the line, wasn't able to articulate. Great job, people don't understand how trans visibility is necessary, but also people tend to completely ignore trans women who don't want to fully medically transition, and even then, girls like us are completely denied our femininity because of that. Laura proudly stands for us in that extremely cheeky but extremely meaningful line, and it makes me so happy a cis man, especially someone your age(no offense) be able to understand that!

I hate the idea of “loving an artist”. love the music, not the people. I don’t know 100 gecs; I like their music but I don’t love them. They are strangers. I liked their old album more… but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the new stuff. I just don’t like overly silly songs, which is weird coming from a 100 gecs fan lol. But to say people aren’t real fans is just dumb to me. Like no one should be praising an artist just cus. Fans are allowed to have different opinions. You don’t have to like every single thing an artist does to be a fan of the music

Hey professor! Really liked this video and specially the point you made on real artists evolving and reinventing themselves because it reminded me of Rojuu, an artist I love and feel has been very underappreciated in the english speaking spheres. He's only 20 but has been a pillar of the underground and experimental scene in Spain. He also came to mind because he represents an entirely digital internet brainrot culture that 100 gecs is equivalent to in America. He started as a music youtuber and later trap artist, but soon grew out of those limits and experimented with more electro, rock and eventually hyperpop sounds that made him more recognized. I was hoping you could check his music out and maybe make a video if you're interested because I have been watching him grow and evolve since the beginning and he never stops surprising me. As always, keep up the great content and thank you!!

I loved your Star Wars comparisons and quotes, though, and I'm glad you are able to appreciate something like that.

Laura Les said in an interview for Song Exploder that the "Anthony Kiedis sucking on my penis" line was because they were trying to interpolate Give it Away on their song, but knew that the Peppers wouldn't allow it lol. Loved the analysis of the line though, I wonder if they thought of that when they wrote it.

I wanna suggest a couple albums for you to review! The new Alice Longyu Gao EP (best album title of 2023 period, you will love it). PC music, hyperpop, subversiveness at it's best. In a way it fits well with the Gecs. In a more conventional vein, the new Maes album. Gotta admit, this album doesn't take much risks but many of the tracks have these melancholic piano lines with your typical drill/trap/ternary trap and a cold delivery to match. the lyrics are not outstanding but not awful either. the album has a couple skips but the listen is a whole mood! (pls include this line in your video if you ever review it haha)

And I can guarantee he's never heard of 100 gecs; although his wife, the professor of painting, may have done. I might also mention that he (Dale) has the hardest fingers of anyone I've ever met. IDK Professor, i think your statement at the start of the video is a little general. While I agree that it is very common for great artists to drop an album that is totally different to their previous work, and everyone hates it, and then years later everyone loves it, it is also possible that an artist changes it up and its a swing and a miss. We will have to see. My personal prediction is that this album will have nowhere near the influence or long term appeal that 1000 Gecs will. But we will have to wait and see. Also, to add to that, its perfectly ok to like certain genres and not others. It doesn't make you not a fan if the artist switches up the genre/style on you.
An artist has the right to switch styles and push the envelope, they don't owe anyone anything, but to say if you don't blindly follow them making drastic changes you're not a fan, come on that's a bit much... guess you wanted to be divisive with the video haha!
As for my personal take, it's alright, but I don't be coming back to it. And I found it disappointing, it didn't feel to me to have the same magic as the first album.
BTW i instantly liked 1000 Gecs. I was old then and im old now.

    • @seanbrennan5192
      @seanbrennan5192 Рік тому

I think the whole trope of “you’re old if you don’t like the direction an artist goes in” is just blatantly wrong. I completely agree with you that the concept of “a person isn’t a true fan if they don’t accept an artists changing style” is kinda BS honestly. You like what you like, it’s as simple as that. Sometimes an artist goes in a direction that is objectively worse than what you knew them for. Chance the Rappers new stuff is awful in my opinion, am I not a “true fan”because I preferred Acid Rap or Surf. I don’t like his new material because I think his new lyrics and style became cliche, and that’s a valid opinion. The title of this video is divisive to spark conversation and to get clicks. It worked because I watched the whole video and am voicing my opinion in the comments. 😂 That being said, I disagree with the thesis of this video. I don’t think your taste in an artist defines if you’re “old” or not. When an artist pushes the envelope, it’s either a hit or a miss.
