- Most of the blokes I know are big boys at heart. So as they get older their Toys get bigger. I'm no exception, and as I have always had a passion for vintage equipment, after some prompting by some friends with the same addiction... I bought a dragline.
I intend to do it up to take to shows and to do the odd dam de-silting job, once I actually know what I'm doing and can operate it properly.
This video is my very first attempt at operating a cable machine. All mechanical, with dog clutches, winches and foot brakes.
Those who are in the know about these type of machines, will probably pick up the bucket needs teeth, the crow's foot was upside down or the drag chains mounted wrong, along with the fact we were using D-shackles instead of the proper Dog bone linkages. These are all on the to do list...

Definitely Australian-built version - there are slight differences in the cab construction - by the time RB were fitting the 6YDAN series 2 engine, they had panelled the engine compartment and the hoist and drag drums off from the operator’s station.
If the changes were in line with RB in England, the machine should be an ICD - improved crane / dragline version. The series 2 engine was uprated to 75 horsepower at 1500 rpm, and the dimensions of the crawler frame increased for greater stability, and an additional counterweight added to the rear of the machine to increase the lifting capacity to 15 tons, and extend the dragline reach to 60 feet of boom.
Significantly, for you, the boom was re-designed to use alloy steel main chords with mild steel lacing angles, and a different configuration of cross section and joining flanges, with two bolts at each corner; earlier booms, fabricated from all mild steel, use three bolt connections. Note that there are different aspect ratios of height to width of boom cross-section for other earlier booms, so it’s as well to check, to avoid disappointment !
I think that the boom point sheave shaft was also increased to 3” diameter with the ICD boom.
Incidentally, the basic boom length, without intermediate sections was 35 feet, comprised of a 15 foot root section and a 20 foot top section. A 5 foot intermediate section is often included to help in de-rigging for transport, particularly when forward mast and pendant boom suspension is used.

Good fun. I have a few hundred hours on an old smith rodley, looks very similar. Keeping the bucket close to the machine makes general use much easier and not so floppy and clanky.

@edmcelhone4501 This was something I have learnt to do better. There was actually too much hoist cable and in actual fact it needs replacing as it's not the right type for this sort of work. My latest difficulty, is trying to get an Oil filter. It's a 6YDA MK2 Ruston Hornsby I pulled the old one out and now looks like none of my filter shops can find a replacement. Know of anyone?

Very cool dragline! You will have her slinging dirt in no time. Makes me want to get my old Speeder running, been a long time since I have used the dragline on it. I could almost smell the friction clutches and brakes, along with some rust. Good stuff
I need all the advice and help I can get. I am trying to get a company that works on cranes to come and fix a few things. I need new sheaves for the jib and fairlead along with struts replaced so I can start getting it painted up in original colours. I hope to move it to another property where I do the Grader driving to dig out a dam or two for practice. So if you know of anybody that I can get parts through let me know. It's an Australian assembled British built 1950's 22RB Ruston Bucyrus with a Ruston Hornsby 6YDA MK2 air cooled engine.
I can operate any type of equipment and I will say the dragline with a drag bucket requires more hands, eyes, & feet coordination than any other machine!

Don't mind me asking mate what did you pay for it looks a awesome machine air cooled something that works its heart out in a hot environment would be water cooled if can move around you should take it to shows there is Australian magazine called The Old Machinery and Farms and Farm Machinery just started getting the first Magazine the Magazine I love is Vintage trucks and Commercial vehicles another great Australian magazine just some food for thought mate all in all love to see that dragline mate you done well good on you cheers mate.
I paid a lot less then you might think. But I will probably out spend the Purchase price by about 6x so in the end it won't a cheap exercise. This machine has been in around North Queensland for most of it's life so being air cooled hasn't been an issue. Hoping to have it painted back in original colours and do exactly what you suggested. Dig a dam out when I have repaired the boom etc...
Greetings from Wisconsin, USA. Your the man with the machine Dan told me he was going to help. Wish I could be there to help. I cut my teeth on a 22B with a cat D318 back in 1974. It had 40 feet of boom and more counterweight I believe. If I look at ditches I dug back then they have 3 foot trees growing in them now. Have fun with it, once it gets in your blood it will be with you forever!
Hey thanks. I'm trying to get in touch with James Creter from over near your part of the USA. Hoping to be able to buy some parts and tidy the old girl up to look like she came out of the factory. I was lucky that Dan agreed to help me, he lives in Victoria and with all the covid nonsense it was touch and go as to whether or not he'd make it to Sunny Queensland. Now if you wanted a shovel front for it I know where there is a new old stock one, it was never installed, to bad it’s in the US. Haha My old neighbor bought the 22B new in 1947 setup as dragline but he also bought a shovel front and it was never installed and used.

Also a massive difference between a well working and setup machine to a old worn out girl.
Did we get any footage at the end of the day when i was on it last. I think she was working well then.

You're more than welcome to come back, if it's tidied up and painted you may find yourself on it for longer than you expect. Trying to chase people up about all the things that need doing on it. @@adriannettlefold9084 todavía no le he dicho me llamo omar sobre lo que me decía de los rodos esos los hace el mismo dueño de la maquina que opera mi papa porque el también tiene taller de torno y soldadura sobre las cadenas no se si me habla de las que lleva en las orugas o las del cucharón porque las del cucharón son las que usan las anclas de los barcos puede ir a una chatarrera de barcos ahí le pueden vender las cadenas
Y si son para las orugas ellos mismos las reparan como le repito el dueño de la maquina tiene taller de torno y soldadura
Y el cucharon de la maquina que opera mi papa es de la capacidad de una tonelada y si se nota que es mas grande que el que usted tiene

@rustybycyclebragg9258 Hi. How long short it be in relation to the buckets? Mine are 1/ 2 yard shown, and 3/4 yard. Also what size rope? I think I'm using 13mm (1/2inch) and the hoist and drag are 18•5m ( 3/4 inch)

@@adriannettlefold9084 I am in South Louisiana and have a Bucyrus 22B in my back yard. I have a drag bucket on it.
@DDT I will be looking to sell mine soon. I enjoyed learning to operate it, but I haven't got the finances available to make the machine reliable to hire out, nor the skills, tools, equipment and spares to maintain and repair it. I am also beholden to the generosity of my mate on who's property it is currently located to store it let alone a truck to be able to shift it around. I am a train driver by profession, and my thought at the time was maybe I could have a small business digging out dams on my days off from QR. Since Covid I now have a second train driving casual job and this pays way more than any business venture... So. as much as I like the old 22RB. I realise I will be better to get out of debt and use the money for what little enjoyment I can while we are free to do anything. Cheers.
