Thanks for this very informative video. I visited the Royal Mews in 2016 and saw the Gold State Coach, it is breathtaking. 👑. Too bad it's so uncomfortable to ride in.
Thank you for posting these videos! I am looking forward to the coronation, but as an American I didn’t know anything about what will actually happen. These videos give an excellent idea of the history and customs of English coronations.
Congratulations on the milestone, Allan. I'm sure you'll be hitting others in due course. I have read that The King and Queen WILL use the Gold State Coach for the forward procession. However, the return procession will be made in a new Coach, the biggest and best yet made by Jim Frecklington, who, of course, was responsible for the Diamond Jubilee State Coach and, before that, the Australian State Coach. To add to the list of quotes by its occupants, the Gold State Coach was used regularly by Edward VII, George V and George VI until the Second World War for the State Opening of Parliament, and George V memorably commented, 'Somebody would do the Nation a favour by putting a match to the bloody thing!'
One wonders why a new tradition could not be set. I thought Australia had given Queen Elizabeth II a new properly sprung coach. Surely there would be no harm in demonstrating the craft skills are still with us.
They have built a new coach made of aluminium in 1977 for the outward journey to be crowned. It’s black and gold I think with air conditioning and all modern comforts. They are saying it cost around 80 million pounds.
It's such a Cinderella piece of iconography, haha! SO over the top! I wonder if you had heard that Queen E II (god rest her soul) had, in her lovely and magnanimous way, allowed (ex) President Obama's two young daughters to ride in it around the courtyard, after they told her it was their greatest wish to do so. She was such a magical "godmother" archetype! On a personal note, I should love to sit in it, just once, but not sure I want to have the ride around the courtyard! lol! Thanks, as always, Allan, and all good wishes to you for hitting the youtube milestone!
Thank you for this brilliant presentation on the Gold State Coach. Permit me to suggest you do a presentation on another mode of transport of a monarch: The Sedia Gestatoria The SEDIA GESTATORIA is a portable throne on which the Pontifices Maximi were once carried. It consists of a richly-adorned, silk-covered armchair, fastened on a suppedaneum, on each side of which are two gilded rings; through these rings pass the long rods with which twelve footmen (palafrenieri), in red uniforms, carry the throne on their shoulders. It too, as the State Coach, was used on solemn papal occasions. However, unlike the Gold State Coach, the SEDIA GESTATORIA has sadly fallen by the wayside.
Congratulations on the 50K milestone Allan! Really well deserved! You work incredibly hard to provide such informative rambles and reels. Great insights into the Coronation Coach. Perhaps there's a need for a new coach, one more in keeping with the 21st Century!
If the King and Queen don’t use the State Coach to go to Westminster Abbey, I wonder what mode of transportation will be brought into play - with space enough for two sets of parliamentary robes…..One of the larger Rolls Royces would fit the bill, but is a motor car really the right way for the sovereign and his wife to travel on this unique occasion?
Just visited the Royal Mews a couple days ago during our first visit to London (from California). The coach is impressive and beautiful, they were working on the interior upholstery. I don't understand why they cannot modify the suspension to make it more comfortable.
My mom's side of the family is prone to motion sickness, so I've seen the effects even rides in comfortable cars with AC can be if the roads are full of bumps and turns. I can only imagine how unpleasant a ride in this carriage, even for a couple hundred yards and at a "stately" speed, would be for everyone involved. One hopes there will be effective anti-emetics and anti-motion sickness medications on hand just in case. By the way, congratulations on your subscriber milestone. With the coronation just seven weeks away, I bet you'll hit 75k by then ... hopefully even more.
Congratulations for the 50k subscribers! I can remember an interview with the late Queen where she said that traveling in the State Coach was a terrible experience.
Congrats on 50k! I always assumed the palms were there because of their association with royalty in Jewish tradition (and across SW Asia more broadly). But given how throughly Roman everything else is, that would make them stand out a bit oddly
I noticed in some film clips from the 1920s and 1930s that the gold coach was used for the state opening of parliament - which was a surprise. I rewatched the clips to be sure and it did show it going to parliament for state openings. I am not surprised that the King isn't using it to go to the Abbey. Due to an accident at polo, Charles has severe, often crippling, backpain and the last thing he would want to do going to such an important ceremony is travel to it in a notoriously uncomfortable coach and risk putting his back out. As a fellow back sufferer, if your back goes out the pain is excruciating and it could prevent him going ahead with the coronation. When your back goes you often are in too much pain to do anything. You can literally be left in tears with the pain. It would be a disaster if the coronation had to be cancelled at the last minute because of the extreme pain caused by the gold coach. The media sometimes make a fuss of Charles travelling with his own bed, as though it is just ego. It is actually an orthopaedic bed he needs to get good sleep in. They conveniently leave out that bit. It is easier to make his bringing his own bed sound selfish or egotistical than to explain it is entirely justified.
l remember seeing the Queen, BEAMING and radiant in bright Pink rolling slowly past rapturous crowds at the Silver Jubilee in 1977 .one can only feel sympathy for all past and future travellers in this unwieldy, cumbersome carriage , BUT it has one huge advantage above all other carriages that might conceivably be used for Coronations.: It is SO tall, and the occupants are so high above the onlookers that in terms of rendering the sovereign 'visible', for ALL to see, it is unmatched.
I won't even ride in my husband's car because of its lack of suspension and it was considered the luxury Australian made car at the time. Some kiddies and a spinal fusion has left me with a 90 year old body😅. Good on her for using it so late in life.
Congratulations on the milestone and also on producing another fascinating video! I have a new appreciation of the coach and it's history as previously I just thought of it as rather vulgar. It reminded me of a bathroom showroom in Mayfair many years ago which catered for the wealthier middle eastern clientele (before the arrival of the Russian oligarchs in London)... they sold loos shaped like golden fish, basins in the style of clam shells (also golden) and the likes. Not what I'd call tasteful but perhaps I'm a bit boring in that respect :)

Such intricate details on the coach! Given the gilding and painting, what happens if it rains on coronation day? Given the weather in England, it must have rained at least once on that day throughout history.
Congratulations on your latest milestone of subscribers. Beneath the carriage there appears to be rather modern looking leaf springs. Do you think there has been a recent attempt to make the ride less uncomfortable?
I don't understand why the Royal family hasn't commissioned Rolls Royce, who are known for their smooth ride, to develop a better suspension for the Gold Coach. It's not as though this is a new problem!!
I think the footage is of public domain but if you have to pay rights, I understand. On the other hand, as I told, the research is really interesting and well done
I get that the UK wants to preserve its works of art and anachronisms because of tradition, legacy, and cultural and historical significance. But I will never in a hundred years understand why the suspension on this coach wasn’t modernized. It’s uncomfortable and only gets rolled out once every 75 years. What a white elephant. Short of that, make a cheaper replica and melt the original down so the materials can be used for other purposes.
Great video, I'm surprised in this day and age that the Palace havn't hidden some modern suspension underneath the coach. Just FYI, You were pointing out all the Roman gods depicted on the coach and you made a slight error. Hermès is a Greek God . The God "Mercury" is the Roman equivalent of Hermès.
Thank you for another “ lesson” on the State Coach and the Coronation. It's probably informative to compare the imagery to Ben Johnson's masque "Neptune's Triumph for the Return of Albion" and Verrio's "Sea Triumph of Charles II"
The Royal Rolls-Royce open landeulet might be more appropriate.
