I got given the PacMan in a tin as a secret Santa gift last year. Perfect stocking filler when all your work colleague knows about you is "he's into old video games!" (Love how you shoehorned a 'SolarStriker' reference into this video!)
Yes please open them up! I'd love to see what hardware they're using and how easy/hard it would be to repurpose it instead of having to print and source your own minty pi parts.
I like it! I’m a Tetris guy and PacMan makes me too anxious to enjoy it (seriously). So I’d be happy to receive the Tetris Tin as a little Father’s day gift! They should do Millipede/Centipede or Galaga/Galaxian in a tin! I’d also like a rail shooter like Solar striker , Nemesis, or Xevious.
I'm curious about the battery life on these, AAA batteries with a decently bright screen seem like a bad mix. I don't know the ins and outs of hardware, but don't backlit screens need a relatively high voltage? That aside, they're cute and look very durable to throw in a pocket or bag. That exposed ribbon cable would give me pause if I were looking to buy though. That seems like something that could've been engineered out in the design phase.
The tetris one is almost an exact copy of the tiny arcade handheld from a few years ago. though it does have better sound and a nicer looking d-pad than the other one. the tiny arcade one had a really bad separate button d-pad you'd see on crappy bootlegs.
You’ve got me hooked on solar striker. I play it all the time. I’m not even that good but it’s such a fun pick up and play game, kill a few minutes in a quick run
I wanted to give you an idea as I saw a commercial for the Samsung Z Flip and thought “that looks like a Gameboy Advance SP”. Would be great to see you make a Gameboy Advance SP flip phone.
I've looked at these on Amazon before, they look interesting. I've always wondered how they play. Sound is a big thing for me, but if they're made custom, I think I can let it slide
They are cool, would like to see more games, maybe like a shooter. Then they could be collected and displayed. Seem like ok quality for being in a mint tin. I would buy one or two not a pac man fan but definitely a Tetris fan.
Great video. I've got Tetris in the Tin. I find the lid a bit flimsy you can be playing it and it drops. That said it's a great version of Tetris. I'd like to see a Donkey Kong original version or BurgerTime or even Frogger as an Arcade In the Tin.
Depends. If its a microcontroller with marking and good datasheet like a stm32 or a alwinner cpu or a rpi, then there could be (or are already) software packages for it to run your own emulator or just ways to port roms to the flash if the flash rom is marked. But if its a NOAC a lot of ripoffs use(nintendo on a chip) (basicly a full nes hardware but cpu, ppu, spu, ram, rom and all HW all put onto a chip) then its pretty impossible to hack
They look great and would be cool for camping when you dont have space for or want to risk damage to a more expensive console. I could absolutely see myself carrying tetris in my handbag!
That Duracell rabbit threw me off. The Wikipedia article was an interesting read. Basically, Duracell can't use the bunny mascot in the USA or Canada because Energizer has the trademark on pink bunny battery mascot.
Nice to see others like Solar Striker to. August 1989 I got it together with my Game Boy for my 9th birthday. Loved it to death, sometimes I pull out my good old Game Boy and then Solar Striker is one of my go to Games😂. OHHH God that means I'm going to be 43 in a few Days 😂. I'm feeling so Old right now.🐢
I'm concerned about the plastic hinge breaking over time and the ergonomics of playing it. Also, the Pac-Man version appears to be the NES and not the arcade. It does look cool but I think it's more to show off on a shelf than for practical use.
Ahhhhh but can they still hold mints? These are so cute and cool. The music is a little off, but I'd be very happy if I found this as a stocking stuffer. I'd love to see any game and watch games in these tins!!!
Elliot, you did a lot of 3ds repair videos in the past which were sped up. Can you show how to replace a circle pad and its joystick entirely? I think its 2 seperate pieces actually and i broke the circle pad plastic while my joystick was drifting. It is a 2015 model new nintendo 3ds xl. I know you don’t do these stuff usually so maybe in your second channel?
Not bad. I wouldn’t go get these for myself, but if I got one as a gift, I wouldn’t turn my nose up to it. Classics that you can’t go wrong. I resented saw these games as cheap lcd games just the other day. Must’ve been the same company for those too
Overall, these little things look kinda neat. :) As for what games I’d like to see be made in this format…I’m going with Activision’s 1983 Enduro for the Atari 2600, and Bandai-Namco’s 1970 Rally X.
The Pac-Man in a Tin is very obviously running a modified NES ROM. Can anyone who owns this verify how it differs from stock NES Pac-Man? I can already see some text changes: "HI-SCORE" to "HIGH" and "1 UP" to "SCORE" (but why?). Can't tell from the video whether colours, sprites, or sound changes have been made, but I strongly suspect that only cosmetic changes were made & gameplay is unchanged.
Personally, ill skip out on these mainly cause i have tons of wyas to play either games But it looks like a cool thing to keep on you or in your display
I'd be more interested in these if there were more than one game on them, but then again I'm not the market for these. These are obviously meant as stocking stuffer sort of gifts or for people that aren't actually retro-gaming nerds. If I got the pac-man one as a christmas stocking stuffer I would probably think it was cute at least.
personally I prefer it taking regular batteries. rechargeable is nice for daily use devices but I need to be able to stick it in a drawer for months at a time and it will still work with the same AAAs.
6 months in not long enough for that. the batteries in my remote are over 2 years old and still going strong. havent even had to roll them around yet.@@medes5597
MintyPi, the project they're based on, experimented with them on the bottom and it's way way way less ergonomic and harder to control. The top is the best placement.
@@EternalLoveAnkh if you make your own minty pi - which I appreciate not everyone can - you can arrange it how you wish. There's actually a lot of variations already made to make it easier for various disabilities, including one handed versions and so on. Interesting gaming tins. I think you'll like upcoming Super Pocket series from Hyper Mega Tech (aka Blaze Entertainment). Taito and Capcom editions due before Christmas.
My guess is it’s an NES emulator with a splash screen that says Pac-Man in a tin before it loads the game. The sound emulation didn’t sound great. Granted I don’t like the NES version of Pac-Man on a good sound emulation but when the sound sounds as bad as this… no thanks.
They aren't just based off of the MintyPi, some of the plastic parts appear to be direct rip offs of the 3D printed parts on the latest version.
Yeah I noticed that complete utter carbon copy.
Yeah this is ripping off community work.
Always fine for corps to take from average people, but never the other way around apparently
yikes. come on Elliot you're better than this.
@@polocatfan Yeah let's blame the UA-camr for producing official Tetris and Pacman merch, how dare he personally rip people's efforts off

Me too. Also I wonder if there's a ready-made MAME version. I don't have the money for small-run stuff and I don't have a 3D printer.
I like it! I’m a Tetris guy and PacMan makes me too anxious to enjoy it (seriously). So I’d be happy to receive the Tetris Tin as a little Father’s day gift!

Great, now he's going to be hunting for Minuet Tetris in a Tin.
Very cool.
Love that the “In A Tin” is a reference too.
@e2011ugdia0:57
ngl the thing in the thumbnail looks like a new 2ds xl with no analog stick
If Solar Striker is your thing, maybe a more recognizable alternative would be Namco's Xevious or Galaga '88.
I had not heard of Solar Striker but it did remind me much of Galaga.
Hmmm, seems like a commercial and simplified MintyPi. Wonder if the case is the same size as an Altoids tin.

If it was 5dlls it would fly off the shelves.
I’m usually not into things like this but…. I kinda love these lol
The grand question; Will these guts actually fit in a genuine Altoids mint tin?
That Solar Striker shout-out made me so happy that's one of my favorite games of all time
Love the new intro man GREAT JOB!
Feels like a rip from the old raspberry pi consels in a tin.
I've looked at these on Amazon before, they look interesting. I've always wondered how they play. Sound is a big thing for me, but if they're made custom, I think I can let it slide
"Open this up!" Thank you, Elliot Coll. Great share.

Solar Striker's a first party Nintendo title. It would be a Game and Watch if it was ever rereleased in handheld form.
Great video.
I've got Tetris in the Tin. I find the lid a bit flimsy you can be playing it and it drops. That said it's a great version of Tetris.

If I was a kid still, I would be damaging that ribbon cable, kids don’t understand that stuff and it looks very pull able haha
Galaga & Space Invaders would be cool
I’d like to see custom games and maybe some indie ones. I do wish the screens were a bit larger width wise.
I really like the pac man one. I’d love to see one of these for space invaders or donkey kong
I'd like to see a dig dug one
Scramble for me. 😂
Great video my friend. These look awesome.
They look great and would be cool for camping when you dont have space for or want to risk damage to a more expensive console. I could absolutely see myself carrying tetris in my handbag!
The anniversary Mario and Zelda Game & Watches are also great for that
Cool looking, but for some reason I can see the video ribbon ripping or tearing wearing out.
That Duracell rabbit threw me off. The Wikipedia article was an interesting read. Basically, Duracell can't use the bunny mascot in the USA or Canada because Energizer has the trademark on pink bunny battery mascot.
I wonder if there's a way to upgrade the screen and make it bigger
The volume pulls more juice from the batteries, robbing the backlight.
I'd love to see a tear down!

Got a new Invicta watch today... well new to me, 1950's Invicta mil-spec Invicta that is very cool and running well... best £12 I ever paid :D

Tetris is all you need tbh
Can't hear any audio from these in the video.
Nostalgia in a tin. My kids aren't going to know what Tetris or Pac-Man is about anyway. My kids are into Street Fighter 6 right now.
Tetris and Pac-Man are timeless games. Eventually they’ll find out about them!
