Matt just absolutely knocked this one completely out of the park (sorry, American baseball reference there). He is brilliant in this song. And all the others (especially Mitch and Kirstie) with their facial expressions and sound effects...just amazing. This is becoming my favorite PTX song, and that's saying something. Since you are only aware of Grinch through the Jim Carrey movie (which was fantastic), the original American TV special was narrated by the same voice actor who played Tony The Tiger in the Kellogg's Cereals commercials, and he sang this song in his very deep voice in the show as well. As such, it doesn't sound right unless a bass voice is singing it. Those of us who grew up watching the Grinch special every Christmas greatly appreciate this touch.
PTX takes their music seriously, but not themselves. They are willing to be silly, to play and have fun with music. That's why this stuff works. They really are having fun.

I think one thing that makes we Pentaholics love Ptx SOOOOOO MUCH is their amazing unique & BEAUTIFUL personalities! They MAKE us want to be their friends, don't they?! Yes, they’re all theater kids (well, Kevin was probably in orchestra pit). Kirstin has been on Broadway - she did a 4 month stint in Kinky Boots in early 2018. She is also currently scheduled to perform in Children of Eden in August 2021 (pandemic allowing). I have seen a tweet from Matt saying that he’d like to be on Broadway as well.

This is my favorite version of this song. Here in the US, the Grinch is very well known. I LOVE how jazzy song and you are right, theatrical this version is. It is just amazing. I of course love Matt's performance but I especially love Mitch's interjections - the best! I love, love, love this song and PTX. They are so insanely talented.
Matt is fab and very well trained. He is an alumni of the Berklee College of Music, one of the top post secondary music schools in the US. He us the youngest of the group, and did acapella in high school. His senior year, his group was in an acapella contest and PTX did a headliner performance. Who would have known that 5 or 6 years later, he would be there. In college he was in Pitch Slapped, the schools top acapella group and often a top contender at the ICCA's (top competition for college acapella groups). It was sad to see Avi go, but Matt definitely brings much to the table. He can do classical and all like Avi, but in some of the hip hop and such, he is very natural and comfortable, and his high energy is great on stage.
He adds a playfulness that Avi didnt quite have. While Avi is amazing, and you can't really compare the two, I actually think Matt is the better fit. The group seems more well rounded now, at least to me.

They said at their first performance on The Sing Off, that they wanted to do pop music (& Sarah B said that they were ambitious to try that with only 5 voices)! But Avi is a Classically trained introvert. Escaping to the forests and woods, quiet time in peaceful surroundings, is just NOT what PTX are! He stuck it out for as long as he could, but it just really wasn’t him, but it absolutely IS Matt! And his warm lyrical bass, suits the sound and direction Pentatonix are heading towards!! I’m so happy for Avi - getting the lifestyle he wants. I’m happy for Matt - getting his dream job. I’m happy for Pentatonix - getting their perfect fit and I’m happy for us - for still getting Amazing Music! 🤗
Matt!! Every word was perfectly pronounced. His expressions, meticulous. I felt like I was sitting in a Broadway performance. I liked what they did at 7:57. Barry☘️, I am glad the voices in your head were laughing here. Hopefully they are smiling today as well.
The original was sung by the amazing Thurl Ravenscroft in the original animated version. He did a lot of voice work and singing for Disney and was the original voice of Tony the Tiger. One song he did for Disney, "The Headless Horseman" (originally done by Bing Crosby) was beautifully interpreted by Geoff Castellucci of Voiceplay. A bit of trivia. The Grinch was actually Dr. Seuss. He was in a foul mood and wrote the book to get himself in the Christmas spirit.

I grew up watching the original cartoon version of "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas", and the grinch song was something I couldn't wait to hear. It's an odd Christmas tradition, but a tradition nonetheless. Matt does an incredible job with it, and the PTX arrangement is phenomenal.

Fun and well done version. I enjoyed their version a lot. In the story about the Grinch who stole Christmas, at the end, having learned that stealing the presents does not destroy the Whos' fellowship and joy, he begins to see the deeper meaning of the holiday. He has a change of heart, and when he returns their gifts, his heart grows three sizes. You keep saying you are crazy,, but I do not believe it.

This video just proves that everyone one of these how talented each one of these young people are. For a bass to have the quality of the upper register Matt has is incredible. Than compare that to Scott when he takes over the bass line when.vvSo fantastic they are. he way they arrange every number they do to fit their personality is musical magic. I listen to at least one number each day and now that their Christmas numbers are highlighted, it is even more fun to listen..........and watch what they are doing. Musically incredible they are ! ! !

Just some quick info: Scott, Kirstie and Mitch are childhood friends who grew up doing theater and choir. When they got to high school they still did theater and choir but were also known as The Trio. (You can see the The Trio as adorable teenagers on some videos here on UA-cam) The Trio is from Texas. After graduating Scott moved to Los Angeles California for college. He joined the famous choir So.Cal Vocals. There he was encouraged to join the ALL ACAPELLA singing competition The Sing Off. Scott contacted Kirstie and Mitch to join him. Scott was told to get bass and a beatboxer to make their trio sound fuller. Scott was introduced to Avi who is from California and was a music/ opera major. Scott was shown a UA-cam video of a cello playing beatboxer. Kevin is from Kentucky. They all formally met as a group a day before the audition for the show. They clicked immediately as a group Scott thought ofvthe name Pentatonic (meaning 5 singing parts) they just changed the last letter into an x. ........Will provide more info for you later😉👍

Overall I think Scott is the most theatrical. Matt has a phenomenal stage presence, and clearly takes it with this song! BUT…and it’s a BIG but, once I watched Kevin’s 5th, I realized Kevin is another level of showman. I mean, just out of this world!

Since you were new to this song, you need to listen to the Thurl Ravenscroft version. It was recorded about 50 years ago and is kind of the original version of this song from the original animated movie, long before Cary. I think Pentatonix did an amazing job in giving it their spin on this true classic.

The original was sung by the amazing Thurl Ravenscroft in the original animated version. He did a lot of voice work and singing for Disney and was the original voice of Tony the Tiger. One song he did for Disney, "The Headless Horseman" (originally done by Bing Crosby) was beautifully interpreted by Geoff Castellucci of Voiceplay.
A bit of trivia. The Grinch was actually Dr. Seuss. He was in a foul mood and wrote the book to get himself in the Christmas spirit.

I'm guessing Barry never saw the animated adaptation, which predated Jim Carry's movie by decades I think.
@@r0kus Dr. Seuss wrote "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas". It was turned into an animated movie in 1966. Jim Carry was four years old at that time (he's 58 this year).
I grew up watching the original cartoon version of "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas", and the grinch song was something I couldn't wait to hear. It's an odd Christmas tradition, but a tradition nonetheless. Matt does an incredible job with it, and the PTX arrangement is phenomenal.
Loved seeing Matt do lead. This one always highlights Scott’s amazing talent to me! Always covering the bass for the bass guy when they are in the lead! Oh you sneak! Visiting Superfruit without us! Lol

This video just proves that everyone one of these how talented each one of these young people are. For a bass to have the quality of the upper register Matt has is incredible. Than compare that to Scott when he takes over the bass line when.vvSo fantastic they are. he way they arrange every number they do to fit their personality is musical magic. I listen to at least one number each day and now that their Christmas numbers are highlighted, it is even more fun to listen..........and watch what they are doing. I would lucky enough to be able to go to one of the concerts of course our hides up so I cannot wait to see them but it was still awesome would never be able to do that again because finances and everything but I'm very happy that was able to go that one time. Just some quick info: Scott, Kirstie and Mitch are childhood friends who grew up doing theater and choir.
When they got to high school they still did theater and choir but were also known as The Trio.
(You can see the The Trio as adorable teenagers on some videos here on UA-cam)
The Trio is from Texas. After graduating Scott moved to Los Angeles California for college. He joined the famous choir So.Cal Vocals. There he was encouraged to join the ALL ACAPELLA singing competition The Sing Off. Scott contacted Kirstie and Mitch to join him. Scott was told to get bass and a beatboxer to make their trio sound fuller. Scott was introduced to Avi who is from California and was a music/ opera major. Scott was shown a UA-cam video of a cello playing beatboxer.
Kevin is from Kentucky.
They all formally met as a group a day before the audition for the show. They clicked immediately as a group Scott thought ofvthe name Pentatonic (meaning 5 singing parts) they just changed the last letter into an x.

Overall I think Scott is the most theatrical. Matt has a phenomenal stage presence, and clearly takes it with this song! BUT…and it’s a BIG but, once I watched Kevin’s 5th, I realized Kevin is another level of showman. I mean, just out of this world!

Since you were new to this song, you need to listen to the Thurl Ravenscroft version. It was recorded about 50 years ago and is kind of the original version of this song from the original animated movie, long before Cary. I think Pentatonix did an amazing job in giving it their spin on this true classic.
