You are right about us needing lessons all of the time. I certainly got mine yesterday. I found out that she was sandwiched between two vehicles and that the one behind her was a pickup truck that shoved her into the back of the vehicle in front of her. Thankfully she is not hurt.
So now I must take that lesson and the one from Pat and make them make a difference. 😊

Going back to the early days for this one, Barry! Yes, it's an original, written by Avi and Kevin. In the shots where the "snow" is "falling upwards", the group members taught themselves to lip synch the lyrics backwards so the shots would match. One of their best originals that I don't think you've reacted to yet is Sing. Very catchy song and fun video, full of surprise celebrity fan cameos.
I heard that Mitch would take over the stomp pad for Kevin when Kevin was rapping his part during concerts. There's a great 2.5 minute video.

My days are a little brighter again!
This is definitely one of their most 'different' songs; no regular 'beat' to the melody and therefore, with it, no beatboxing. That makes it damn hard to keep time, even with actual musical instruments, so to do it with just their voices shows just how insanely in sync they are with each other. And I reckon they could actually fix your plumbing as well; they'd just sing to your faulty pipework and it would just go "Ah, go on then, you sound lovely, so we'll behave from now on."
They would often perform this song off-mic at their concerts. They would stand at the edge of the stage and sing their hearts out. And you could hear every word from every corner of the concert hall, the soft and gentle parts, and (of course) the belting parts. Always a magical experience to be in the audience for that (which I was).
Mitch’s tone is so sweet and more angelic than usual, and that’s saying something. Everyone was phenomenal. But mitch’s voice made me want to cry.
There is by far more use of dissonance in this song than in any of their other songs. So haunting and beautiful.
Those slides where one second its Kirsten cutting through then, without knowing where it changed, its Mitch cutting through.
A hauntingly beautiful song, Barry. The underlying bass and harmonies, the slowness of each word stilling time, defining the meaning of the song, creating an ache that deepens with each note. Again, very beautiful song. Thanks for asking us to listen again.

I warned you Barry love, it's a gut punch of a song. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE it, but it still tears me apart every time to listen to it. That's why I wasn't in a hurry for you to react to it. Several of their songs you need to build up to, because if you take them on too soon, it is just too much to handle. They just never cease to amaze with their songs. They just released a new all original album, which you better believe I bought!! And I've been waiting to listen to it, because everyone is talking about how all the songs are connected to mental health, and that several of them are really emotional. And I've been having a rough time recently, and I know I can't handle them just yet. These beautiful people can wring my heart out like a wash cloth, and I just can't take that right now. To hear Kevin in this arrangement as another vocalist is nice. Avi and Mitch singing highs and lows together is gorgeous. The whole thing is chef 💋. Side note, I want Barry's voice as a ring tone.
They can sing anything. You have the songs where they have individual parts and then these moments where they are all together, no beatboxing, and it is gorgeous. Other than that one emoji…. 😢 And my normal one ❤️

I heard a line in a Hank Williams song "Mister can you make folks feel what you feel inside?" Well, Pentatonix, mission accomplished! I felt all the feels with this song. The hairs on my arms and neck were bristling, tears in my eyes, breathless at times, just so gorgeous. Their harmonies are unmatched, so soft and lyrical in this piece. Thank you for bringing this song to my attention. Somehow, I had not heard it before, though don't know how that was possible! Just lovely!

Their cover of Valentine is equally lovely, and quite appropriate for the upcoming Valentines Day.
It is in fact an original, written by Kevin and Avi. And while the video is simple, creating it was anything but. To get the effect of the snow falling upwards, they lip synced the segment BACKWARDS and then put the video in reverse in editing.
This was written by Avi and Kevin :D
From what I've read, Kevin had the concept for the beginning, and then Avi pretty much wrote the rest. It does indeed sound like Avi writing, both music and lyrics. And apparently Ben Bram worked on the final arrangement.

I know I say this is my first original song by Pentatonix but I mean not a Christmas song. I’ve heard two lovely original Christmas numbers by my talented buddies. As I say in the video “is there anything they can’t do?”

They’re so in synch that even their individual vibrato doesn’t compete, it strengthens the bubble of sound..no one ever goes outside the bubble, like a big, warm bath..

I don’t get why people say there’s no beat. That’s just not true. There is definitely a meter, a beat to this beautiful song, which I think is obvious. The song has a lovely, beautiful cadence to it.
But the beat is not overt.

I missed you, Barry! This is a favorite of mine. I've listened to it over a hundred times but when they hit the 2 chords on "free" the tears start flowing. This and their Amazing Grace will be played when my ashes are spread in the Great Smoky Mtns in Tennessee.

The beautifully layered tone and texture of their voices, the warm round vowels, the playing with dissonance to add intensity that resolves so gently and beautifully. This has always been one of my favorite songs by them.
Avi and Kevin just made that song work, There are times with this song that I just cant... Misty eyed even on a good day.

Beautiful, yes but...to me there is a deeper meaning in the lyrics. It speaks to me of a lost love that never was found again. It seems to be saying that one member died and the remaining member is beseeching heaven and earth to get them back. "I will Break down the gates of heaven...a Thousand angels are waiting for me" speaks to me of the desperation of the one who lived is willing to do anything to regain their lost love, even challenge heaven.
It takes my mind to those I've lost and makes me miss them all the more. It takes me to the one of whose love I could never speak, but only dream of in silence... and what I would do to see him, speak to him once more.

There are few songs where we get 5 part harmony but this is one of my favorites. If I’m right, Kevin & Avi wrote the song. I think that’s why the base is so strong. I love Mitch here. Even though you can hear the others, Mitch is so beautiful here. The breaking down the gates of heaven part is so strong it almost takes my breath away. Interesting comparison to Clannad. This is one of my favorites of PTX. Thank you for reviewing it. I have followed them since their debut on The Sing-Off. They are simply amazing!
YES! You've solved a mystery I've been kicking around since I first heard this song years ago. The warmth and other-earthliness was immediately apparent to me, but there was a quality of the music that I couldn't quite put my finger on it. It felt like a combination of lullaby from hundreds of years ago, and that beautiful call of a penny whistle played in the near distance. CELTIC. You finally named that mystery element of this piece for me. A beautiful blanket of sound with gorgeous Celtic thread woven throughout.
