- No disrespect to the editors, John Cho & the rest of the cast but I felt something was off with the action scenes in Netflix's live action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop. It's not perfect but I thought I'd take a shot at spicing up the Spike & Jet vs Bank Robber Fight Scene.

Great edit; it's how the action scenes should be. The only downside is that you had to cut out parts of "What Planet is This".

This is something you can teach in a film class or something.
It’s incredible what shaving off a few frames can do for a fight scene to make it feel more engaging. A pity nobody told that to the Netflix crew.

Ok this is way much better. After seeing the original live action version and editing version, the editing version is way better because the pacing is better, where live action drags way too long with pointless dialogue, this one is way better. I can say the editing version is better and you great job with this.

I found this part of the show oddly too violent. It is even worse when we find out that the crew was supposed to take them alive. An oddly violent, yet bloodless series of shootings and even a stabbing.
Like how in the edit Spike still teleports 30 feet in front of the two other guys! XD

you did a great job editing the action/reaction to each of the hits, and the scene flow much better for it. The original, and most of the other fight scenes just didn't flow as well as the could have, with all of the 'hit-pause-hit-pause' fighting. Well done!

In another one of your edits, I couldn't tell much of the difference. This one, I could DEFINITELY tell. So many waste of time scenes were edited out and it turned out amazing!

Ok, so while both edits are good, I just to explain what the Netflix team did. Mostly because I think this is one of the few things they actually did right for the series. While your edits are much more contemporary and therefore suit more modern tastes (well done by the way, you did a terrific job!). The original Cowboy Bebop had a lot of influences. One of which were the fight scenes of 1970's blaxploitation and old school 'kung fu' movies (also just out of interest, Spike's fighting style is based off Bruce Lee). Fighting scenes from back then were purposefully over-dramatic with long pauses and over-exagerated poses/ reactions. It was as much about the fight as what each individual character was thinking, feeling and experiencing during said fight. (The music choice of Cowboy Bebop also reflects music choices of those old movies too) :)

It's a shame, so much hard work went into this show just for it all to be pissed away by the editing, direction, and scripts.
Gj man! Ya I felt the same thing as you - the pacing in the Cowboy Bebop fight scenes was too slow which is really due to poor editing. I think movies like the Bourne films and John Wick have conditioned us to expect really fast-paced, dynamic action scenes (here's a fun exercise: go back and watch the fight scenes from the first Matrix film. Back then they were groundbreaking, but now they feel SO slow.)

This is definitely an improvement, but it unfortunately comes with the caveat of being the polishing of an unrefined product. Choreography that isn't so amazing can't be fixed by good editing. That being said, this is still some good editing!

I imagine they slowed the fight down to fit the soundtrack, which does everything a disservice. They could have easily had more action instead of more pauses!

It's honestly the main issue with a great deal of the show. The pacing is so drawn out and awkward.
You could honestly have one less episode for the season in substitute for all the drawn out, unnecessary, BS. The story would honestly be compelling (it'd go by so quick, you wouldn't have a chance to react to how dumb it is).

Dealt with about everything wrong with the scene without being able to just go in and redirect it. I felt they did slightly better as time went on because this first episode took me 3 times of going back to finish it.
What you did was essentially edit it in Chinese kung-fu movie way.
Americans tend to like to show how the punch was thrown while Chinese films (i.e. Jackie Chan films) only show the hits, hence why it feels smoother. The former looked better in Cowboy Bebop because they were moving faster than typical humans do.
Not to mention being animated means the people have full control of how fluid the "bodies" are with each movement, so we only really get to see blurs of the body parts in the anime while in this Live Action, we get to see the entire human leg or arm with each kick or punch. Hence, the LA seems slower.
3:20 this is the best part of the edit. The only time I've seen a man hit a woman and it didn't feel cringe.
It's better, but no amount of editing in the world could make that turd good.

What's funny was this scene wasn't really bad, but then I realized it was ripped off from the gas station scene in the Cowboy Bebop movie which was done better.

edit is definitely better but with the edit i feel like i blink and its a new camera angle. pretty sure if you were on the editing team youd have more to work with.
Dude that was great. You need to edit the entire series to remove all the reductive characters, stupid quips and pretty much all of Gren and Vicious - fix the Asimov, Maria Murdock, Le Fou, Udai Taxim and Whitney Haggis storylines and just mute Faye for the entire thing and I'd totally watch that. You would probably end up with about 45mins of tight footage at the end but at least it would be tolerable to watch!

lakeith stanfield wouldve made a better spike spiegal imo. he has the same build and is a natural at being effortlessly cool. also closer in age to spike

2:03 is extremely upsetting to me lol, wtf is the DP and editor thinking to continue the action viewed 1) over the shoulder from 2) across the entire bar and 3) telephoto at that, all to show the stabbed guy isn't dead yet lmao, wtf. People really don't understand the slop Netflix, Marvel, Disney, Amazon are shoving down their throats when film and movies used to have it SO GOOD.

Better editing could have saved this show. That pause after the "wondered when you'd show up" felt like ages, i would pay to see the whole series re-edited.
Yeah I love that you removed the idiotic breast touching moment. In a high octane fight like this, you're not going to stupidly stop and care about the sex of your attacker when they are seconds from killing you. It was a dumb nonsensical joke that the original anime would never have made during these moments. It's stuff like that which turns me off from watching western adaptions of great anime. Also usually it's just badly done in general like the Death note one or Fullmetal Alchemist. It often comes off as super cheesy. I still need to watch half of the Cowbop anime but the opening scene in the first episode is a masterpiece where the rose falls onto the ground and the red color deepens as the juxtaposed cuts of Spike fighting and getting bloodier plays in between, symbolizing the severity. The tone is completely different for the first episode of the live action version. It's rather sad these creators couldn't see the value of the counter-part. I love that the anime episode opens in the slower pace and focuses on the silent serenity of space and the lifestyle on board the ship. You still get the action later on but these opening scenes establish the western tone. Space can be compared to the open west in the sense of a more carefree lifestyle to explore and venture out into the open adventure. There's free enterprise and opportunities to be chased. The western style music doesn't just set the tone but also helps paint that picture.
Jeez even WITH the edit, the moment where the music goes quiet and it becomes a horror movie for 5 seconds while the bad guy looks under the table feels stupidly long. I can see what they were going for - where the action slows down for a few beats - it CAN be done effectively - it’s just all wrong here.

Like a lot of people said, it does indeed improve the pace, and gives more energy to the fight but we do lose something when the scene is edited down. We understand what is happening because we've seen the show and because we've seen the original edit before that last clip, but without that, we quickly lose where everything is in the scene. In the original edit, the action is much slower (still don't know why they kept tht awkward exchange between Jet and Spike, it just kills the flow) but we clearly understand where everyone and everything is in the scene. In my opinion, there's definitely an issue with the editing but also with the way they filmed some (not all) of the fight scenes in the show.
A good example would be the "lost session" trailer they filmed especially to promote the show. They cleverly played with the format, the flow of the characters, dialogues and camera mouvements. I don't get why they didn't keep some of that energy in the show.

You changed like 3 scenes, and now you think it's better? Even more of a trash, than original.. What you trying to achive by cutting 0:52 to 1:04? Was there any reason why you think such abruptive scene change could be seen as something better? Now the 1:34 does make sense to make it less cheesy. But then again what was the point to change 1:50 scene if it was a subtle joke.
In any case, no edits will save this trash.

The only good thing about the original was Jet's accidental grope. The timing of the joke was well done and his reaction was honestly pretty true to the character. Otherwise, your edit was flat out superior.
I thought about keeping it in but, personally, I'm not a fan of the trope. The actor definitely sold it and it would be something Jet would do; just not my cup of tea. Happy you liked it!

I really hope Netflix has a healthcare plan because Shakir is going to need it after carrying the entire goddamn show on his back. Jet is, so far, the only good thing I've seen about the show.

I feel like the accidental grope would have worked better if she had surprised Jet from the side or back with a much faster-paced cut. But because she runs straight at him (and because the editing is so labored and slow) and because Jet's attacks against the other enemies were more brutal in general, it makes Jet's grope look intentional (even though he acts surprised when he does it) which kills the joke.
No disrespect to the creative team? WTH are you talking about. Their editing sucks. Its like they hold on every shot for a whole second more than they need to like they are waiting for the director to yell cut. It is so awkward.
Am I the only one bothered by the fact that the AK's have no recoil? And that their muzzle flash looks like Nintendo 64 graphics? They should have at least pretended the guns had some weight 🙄
