I was inspired by one of your vlogs awhile back on Puerto Escondido and I ended up spending a month out there. It was amazing! The travelers there are laid back and the food is great. Fast forward a couple weeks later when I in was Tulum and it felt like everyone either wanted my money or was high on something. I left after a few days. Puerto for sure!
I have been all over México and trist me almost everyone sees a turista as an ATM machine. Yes it's worse onajor turista áreas butainly speaking if the locals are very friendly they just want your money. I have met a few good folks down here but in general i'm treated like an ATM. I have been to 17 states and over 60 places so far in 16 months and speak spanish so i know what's really going on.
I've been to a few different states now and none have been more pushy to get me to spend cash than in Quintana Roo. Generally feel like simple no's or gracias have dissuaded other merchants. YMMV though, safe travels through this beautiful land!
Tulum is so exploited at this point. It used to be authentically laid back and chill decades ago. The area has been "hugged to death" by tourism. I really hope PE doesn't meet the same fate. It still has the perfect mix of authenticity and comfort.
I was in Tulum the first time in 1989 (old) and there was nothing there. We stayed on the beach in a cabana. The real one with no floor (just the beach). We hanged our hammocks in there and that was it. The shower was a bucket from the well and there was a "restaurant" where we had our meals. You could just walk up to the ruinas, no entry. Now it is something else. Not sure I will ever experience that again maybe a bit when I visited Myanmar but not close.
We booked a family trip to Mexico in July without knowing anything about those differences, except that PE and Oaxaca in general seemed less travelled. We are glad about our decision, the more info we gather. We hope to provide our kids with more of a backpacking experience than an all-inclusive vacation, and I think 8 days on the Oaxaca coast (split between PE and SA) will be perfect! Your videos have been very useful for our planning!
Vivo en Puerto Escondido, me da gusto que te haya gustado tanto. Como personal local aprecio todos tus comentarios, ojala podamos coincidir en tu siguiente viaje. Abrazo y buena vibra!
Thank you so much. Beautiful shots of Rinconada and Carrizalillo. Your video brings back really great memories. I was there for a month, just before the hurricane. Stayed some nights at Hostel Shalom and I cannot wait to get back. Thanks again!

@@jillmattioli9640 So many of these beautiful places here in Mexico have been trashed by the vast amount of youtubers promoting them. They are small little towns without the infrastructure to accomodate the influx, and the attitudes of the locals end up changing with so many outsiders. It's quite sad what has happened in Tulum. As my daughter says, 'white colonialism redo.'

An alternative to Tulum is Playa del Carmen which I think is a better destination if you are not a surfer. Has the benefits of both worlds with Tulum within day trips distance. Also, WiFi wthin PDC is top notch.
I've been to Tulum 10 years ago and it was completely different. The city was still small and not very touristic and it was very cheap. Glad I've got to experience it like that
That was a pretty good breakdown. I went to Mérida in Jan, then randomly decided to check out Puerto for a week not knowing anything about it, and ended up staying for 4.5 months. Just got back home July 1. Stopped in Playa del Carmen on my way home for a week to visit a friend and check out the area. Two of my good friends live in each one of those cities. I have a long time friend that lives in Puerto Escondido. He's been there for about 20 years, he married a Mexican girl and has a factory in Puerto and one in Mexico City. My best friend has been visiting the Cancun, Bacalar, and Tulum area for about 6 months now. He just bought a condo in Tulum and will be moving there in about a week, in mid June 2024. Love your Mexico videos there so informative. Colombia too my wife and I bought a small home in Cartagena but we also live in the uk. My wife is from Cartagena but you have given me so many more places to go and visit your information is really helpful planning a motorcycle trip from Cartagena to ricon because of your videos is there also other nice spots down that coastline. Sucre I think it’s called. 🌴😎
Very nice well done review of these two places, I have lived in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara for over twenty years. Tulum City not the beach has always been one of our favorite places, we know there are the expensive beach places, but the town of Tulum seemed more Europeans and fewer Americans. Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is worth the visit with a large number of birds species and great scenery. It was expensive, we paid $140 per night for a tent, but it was a very nice tent. If you are interested in pre-Colombian societies Tulum is a good jumping off point. Oaxaca is a place we have been several times but never the beaches, my wife is a Mexican and we live at the beach but I never considered the Oaxacan beaches. We will give them a try soon. The one thing I will say about Mexico in general, every significant beach community has a broad variety of accommodations, from $10 to 2,000 per night. Most middle aged Americans tend to do $100-300 per night for a seven to fourteen day vacation versus $35-75 per night for people staying months. Violence in Mexico is over emphasized, there are dangerous places and the later at night and your level of alcohol ingestion increases your likelihood of problems, most of these problems are considerably less than a DUI in the USA. For the millions of tourists that travel to Mexico, most problems are from self destructive behavior not from aggression by locals, because it is very bad for business. Drugs, you will be offered drugs a lot if you are under 40. The best response is no thanks.
And, of course, we miss you! And, of course, we miss Puerto Escondido! You did not talk about any future travel plans on this video. On July 3, 2021 we heard Kool and the Gang and the L A Phil perform at the Hollywood Bowl along with a ton of fireworks. Watching from Los Angeles, CA Thank you! Steve Miller.
Been to the Yucatán a few times and I’ve avoided Tulum every time. I definitely will add Puerto Escondido to my list of places to visit in Mexico next year. Hopefully our paths cross.
I live in PDC. Prices are almost the same as but in the Tourist/Hotel zone. However, you don’t have to stay in that area where it is full of tourists. I stay where locals live. Things are much cheaper.
Great analysis - I spent a couple weeks in Tulum in 2022 and completely agree. Haven't been to PE yet - will go for a month at the end of April - but based on your analysis I KNOW I will like it more than Tulum. I have also spent time in the Cabo region (so much more than just Cabo - rent a car and stay in La Paz - swimming with whale sharks is the best and cheapest on the planet imho). Also loved Acapulco (yeah, really - even surprised me after all the negative press), Mazatlan, Tijuana (yeah, really!!), Mexico City (AWESOME), Puerta Vallarta (especially Sayurita although that was over 10 years ago before it was really trendy like now) and Chetumal (down on the Belize border). Mexico is AWESOME!!!!!
Thanks, been spending the winter in Progreso, heading to the pacific coast this weekend, I will deffently stop in at Puerto Escondido. I love what i hear about the whole west coast. Have you been back again since 2020?
As an American with properties in both Tulum and Oaxaca, this video has good breakdown of prices and the vibe. It's worth noting that because of the increased violence in the last year has been met in recent months with a substantial increase in the Federal police presence and this has made Tulum much safer.
Tus videoblogs son muy interesantes, estoy mejorando mis habilidades de listen and talking y además de educativos me resultan muy entretenidos y fáciles de entender... saludos desde Puerto Escondido
It actually rains a lot more in Puerto Escondido, than in Tulum. Twice as much. 81 Inches in Puerto Escondido, to 44 inches in Tulum. I don’t know where you get the desert from. It’s a very wet part of México. You probably were there during the dry season. In Puerto Escondido it rains in the summer, in Tulum in the Fall. “PUERTO ESCONDIDO CLIMATE SUMMARY Puerto Escondido is 67m above sea level. The climate is tropical in Puerto Escondido. In winter, there is much less rainfall than in summer. According to Köppen and Geiger, this climate is classified as Aw. The average annual temperature is 25.8 °C | 78.5 °F in Puerto Escondido. The annual rainfall is 2062 mm | 81.2 inch.” “Tulum: Precipitation amounts to 1,120 millimeters (44.1 inches) per year: it is therefore quite abundant. It ranges from 30 mm (1.2 in) in the driest month (March) to 180 mm (7.1 in) in the wettest (October). Here is the average precipitation. On average, there are around 2,525 sunshine hours per year.”
@@dustinrhodes2546 Yeah, probably. But that’s the thing, instead of doing a 30 research in Google, they come here for a couple of months, and think everything they say is true or accurate. And are giving people advice on a very limited experience and knowledge.
Yeah I was pretty confused on where she got that information as well. There were definitely a few things mentioned about P.E. that left me scratching my head. Granted, I was only there for 5 months (Jan-July). Seemed like she only visited a couple parts of town and based everything off that. I found the "street food" segment a little strange as well.
Thank you for your video. I was literally trying to find out which place to go from these 2 places. I will be going to Puerto Escondido ✨😊Mainly because I'm on a budget but want to take my Girl Friend
I also spent an extended period of time in both around the same time as you and I agree 100%! I feel I do not need to return to Tulum, but I would return to PE especially since it's fairly close coming from the US. Also, as an American I agree Tulum has too many Americans hahaha I left for Mexico to escape for awhile and Tulum felt like I was in the influencer side of Los Angeles, but with prettier beaches
Oh great, wish I saw this before booking 10 weeks at a Airbnb in downtown Tulum! Still looking forward to it tho as I found a place with fast WiFi (I work full time remote) and I'm staying in a local neighborhood so prices should be cheaper
UPDATE: the WiFi in Tulum is great and being 'far' from the beach isn't an issue (my Airbnb provided me with a bicycle). Love Tulum and wish I was staying here longer!!
Anyone know if the internet in either place is good enough for Zoom or Facetime? I don't need many mg for video calling. I don't upload, I just have to talk to clients.
Hola, I've started watching your vlogs as I'm planning to travel around Yucatan for 7 days next year and then spend the final week on a beach. You've opened my eyes on prices for outside of Cancun (which I would have thought would be the most expensive part) but Tulum seems to be equally expensive. What are your thoughts on Merida and Valladolid?
If You speak spanish You can love cheap even in Cancún. Hanging out in Any tourist área in México is going to be around the same price anywhere You go. The bottom line is if You want to spend a Lot of money its all there. If You want to live in hostels and eat cheap street food You can do that as well I rented rooms in playa del Carmen for 5000 pesos a month in a decente área 10 blocks from the beach. Mérida i passed through twice didnt care for it but it's supposed to be safe. I went during quaranrine so most places were closed...
Seven days is not enough to travel around Yucatan because there is so much to see and do. If you can't spend more time limit yourself to few places and come back another time. I've been in Yucatan six times and I still haven't seen everything. I'm going back again next month to Chetumal, Bacalar and Holbox which are places I didn't go before. I will be in Puerto Escondido too, thanks in part to this video.
This was an amazing video! Did you go to playa del carmen? I'm thinking of there instead of Tulum for sure. I'm not looking to party, just work remote, relax, maybe scuba dive and hike. What do you recommend? I need good enough WiFi for zoom calls.
Hey! I am looking at staying at Las Olas. How did you book the hotel. Is it a place that I have to walk up to and book in person or can I book ahead of time. What did you do while you where there?
Im not sure if you can book online - I just booked in person! I have a whole video talking about all the amazing things you can do in Puerto Escondido 😊ua-cam.com/video/A3tObRu8EuM/v-deo.html
Guuuuuurl... Thank you so much for making this video. I was trying to go to Tulum/Playa del Carmen. But the plane tickets are $4500..... And there are no ways that I can pay that. especially being a family of 4. I really think of chance as my destiny, and go to Oaxaca. Do you know by any chance how is the water around the middle of March. ? Again the video was great. Thank you.

Good job.
Thanks for your advices.
PS. Have a nice day!
Been to the Yucatán a few times and I’ve avoided Tulum every time. I definitely will add Puerto Escondido to my list of places to visit in Mexico next year. Hopefully our paths cross.
Thank you very much for this video!
Thanks for that comparison, I agree with your conclusions.
Do you know how the prices of Playa Del Carmen are compared to these two cities?
PDC is more than Puerto, but less than Tulum
More on the touristy side of pricing
@@GraemeLuey thank you!!
pdc has major problem with seaweed now
I live in PDC.
Great video, thank you!
I have never been to puerto Escondido. After watching your video, I now want to go! Thank you!
Love the video!! 🌺🌼🌺
Thanks for the great video! Any ideas on how good wifi is currently in puerto Escondido?
Super helpful thank you!
How about staying in Ouerto Vallarta?
This is a good comparison!
Tulum: white sand, turquoise water, little waves
Puerto Escondido: yellow sand, blue green water, high waves (to surf)
As an American with properties in both Tulum and Oaxaca, this video has good breakdown of prices and the vibe. It's worth noting that because of the increased violence in the last year has been met in recent months with a substantial increase in the Federal police presence and this has made Tulum much safer.
Isnt ilegal to buy properties in México as a foreing?
Thank u! as a backpacker im def. going to Puerto Escondido
Tus videoblogs son muy interesantes, estoy mejorando mis habilidades de listen and talking y además de educativos me resultan muy entretenidos y fáciles de entender... saludos desde Puerto Escondido
Thanks for your info.. PE is on the list !
Totally agree !!!
I am 66 and have my airfare for 2 weeks in April. Is there a quiet, affordable place you would recommend? Your dimples are cool.
Agree with your choice 👍😀
Watching this in PE epic summary shout out from a kiwi 🥝 abroad !!!!
“PUERTO ESCONDIDO CLIMATE SUMMARY
Puerto Escondido is 67m above sea level. The climate is tropical in Puerto Escondido. In winter, there is much less rainfall than in summer. According to Köppen and Geiger, this climate is classified as Aw. The average annual temperature is 25.8 °C | 78.5 °F in Puerto Escondido. The annual rainfall is 2062 mm | 81.2 inch.”
“Tulum:
Precipitation amounts to 1,120 millimeters (44.1 inches) per year: it is therefore quite abundant. It ranges from 30 mm (1.2 in) in the driest month (March) to 180 mm (7.1 in) in the wettest (October). Here is the average precipitation. On average, there are around 2,525 sunshine hours per year.”
I agree, maybe it was an assumption based on her experience being there in winter?
@@dustinrhodes2546 Yeah, probably. But that’s the thing, instead of doing a 30 research in Google, they come here for a couple of months, and think everything they say is true or accurate. And are giving people advice on a very limited experience and knowledge.
Yeah I was pretty confused on where she got that information as well. There were definitely a few things mentioned about P.E. that left me scratching my head. Granted, I was only there for 5 months (Jan-July). Seemed like she only visited a couple parts of town and based everything off that. I found the "street food" segment a little strange as well.
that was her personal experience ..... due to timing of her trip - Puerto rains like mad in September , I was there
Was in Tulum for a few weeks I’m excited for puerto escondido
You can go to an internet cafe in PE and connect your laptop to an ethernet cable
I would like to travel to PE, would it be a good idea to take my 2yr old twins? Wanting to travel 30days in Aug*Sept. Any suggestions / advise
I'm from the USA and my Spanish is trash how do I go about moving there and finding work and etc.
I’m heading to Mexico around September to travel and live for a year. I definitely feel ill like Puerto Escondido way more than Tulum!
@Daniel Ruiz whatever you don’t even know me lol
Thank you for your video. I was literally trying to find out which place to go from these 2 places. I will be going to Puerto Escondido ✨😊Mainly because I'm on a budget but want to take my Girl Friend
I also spent an extended period of time in both around the same time as you and I agree 100%! I feel I do not need to return to Tulum, but I would return to PE especially since it's fairly close coming from the US. Also, as an American I agree Tulum has too many Americans hahaha I left for Mexico to escape for awhile and Tulum felt like I was in the influencer side of Los Angeles, but with prettier beaches
even LA doesnt have that many influencers
There's way to many foreigners in Mexico, wish they would stop living in Mexico life is getting so bad for the locals
Thanks for the excellent info ! It is too bad about the poor internet, as otherwise Pto. Escondido sounds like a perfect place for me to live.
Anyone know if the internet in either place is good enough for Zoom or Facetime? I don't need many mg for video calling. I don't upload, I just have to talk to clients.
tulum has changed so much because of these instabloggers and gringos
I could cry
And UA-camrs 😪
Which Hostel do you recommend for a solo female traveler…. all the Hostel’s Provide coffee do they have a kitchen for community use
Does Starlink help with the Wi-Fi in Puerto Escondido?
Hola, I've started watching your vlogs as I'm planning to travel around Yucatan for 7 days next year and then spend the final week on a beach.
You've opened my eyes on prices for outside of Cancun (which I would have thought would be the most expensive part) but Tulum seems to be equally expensive.
What are your thoughts on Merida and Valladolid?
If You speak spanish You can love cheap even in Cancún. Hanging out in Any tourist área in México is going to be around the same price anywhere You go. The bottom line is if You want to spend a Lot of money its all there. If You want to live in hostels and eat cheap street food You can do that as well
I rented rooms in playa del Carmen for 5000 pesos a month in a decente área 10 blocks from the beach.
I liked your review
This was an amazing video! Did you go to playa del carmen? I'm thinking of there instead of Tulum for sure. I'm not looking to party, just work remote, relax, maybe scuba dive and hike. What do you recommend? I need good enough WiFi for zoom calls.
The wifi news sucks because I must have very fast internet to work remote. Bummer
I’m considering visiting PE but concerned about the average age group. Can someone in their 50’s feel comfortable and have a good time? Thanks!
You will find people in your age everywhere in the world 🙂
You are going to feel more confortable in Huatulco, 2 hours from PE, a lot of retires canadians live there.
@@BackpackingBananas oh I watched that video too. So helpful!!
Sounds good. I’ll just book that place in person. Thank you so much!
Thank you.
You are really good to go to the crux of the matter! Love to hear
your opinion! Really enjoyed your u tube!
