April Showers Bring May Flowers | Shot on 16mm Film | Bolex H16

- This is my second 16mm short film called “April Showers Bring May Flowers.” It was shot entirely on 16mm motion-picture film using a Bolex H16 Rex-5, which has been converted to Super 16. This film highlights this year’s transition from April into May documenting the spring rain followed by the blossoming flowers in May. Along with the seasonal changes, I wanted to show the stark contrast between different aspects of the city. Not only do April showers literally bring May flowers, but figuratively the phrase can also be a subtle reminder that while some things may seem unpleasant (such as a rainy day or gritty parts of the city) they can also lead to enjoyment and be appreciated through a different perspective. Hope you enjoy it! Feel free to ask any questions in the comments, I will reply to all.
Camera: Bolex H16 Rex-5 (converted to Super 16)

gorgeous
Thanks so much Gawx! 🙌😭
Wow, this was so stunning! Feels like a dream.
Thank you! 16mm film definitely evokes a dreamy feeling
meant as a compliment: the coloring and focus reminded me so much of 60's-70's films, that i found myself surprised whenever a modern image popped up. really nicely done.
Love that! I can’t get over the look of 16mm film. Thanks so much for watching and the positive feedback!
So it naturally looks like this???
Thanks for keeping vintage tech alive.
It’s so beautiful 🫡🫡 Hope it never dies out
The modern world through a vintage lens, SUPERB ART! An everyday pair of spectacles giving the same effect would make for an amazing addition to the daily grind.
Thank you so much!!
I am forever blown away by what you can do
Man you’re too kind 😭🙌 Always inspired by your work
I loved the angles you chose and how they convey a neutral perspective of the environment. It creates immersion and I didn't feel like someone was shooting these moments with a camera. Well done!
Thank you so much! That’s a huge compliment as that’s the goal for many cinematographers. 🙌
Absolutely gorgeous. I LOVE 16MM film and really film in general, but serious credit to you my friend, this is shot beautifully! I very much hope that you keep shooting short films on real film. You should perhaps consider writing a short story, grabbing some friends and making a short film with sounds as well. I think you will do a very well. I look forward to more of your work.
You are a video genius. I hope you visit Korea someday.
Absolutely mesmerising footage. Thank you so much. 16mm is so underrated in modern cinema.
Thank you so much! I totally agree
This is so soo good Mike
So glad you enjoyed it, Eren! 🙌
wonderful! composition and arrangement were fantastic. the 16mm film just accentuates... everything!
I agree! Thanks so much for the positive feedback! 🙌
so inspired the video & story... watched so many your work, great job
Very very beautiful, can't get enough of it
Your work is inspirational! The collaboration of music, videography, attention to detail, film techniques, grading, and wording is poetry in motion. I overwhelmed by the images and how you present them. Everything is beautiful!!! I look forward to your next work of art!
WOAH so beautiful! This deserves waaaaay more views!
Thanks Noah!
Great. I love the colours and the dreamy atmosphere. The music makes the whole experience into a zen mood
Thank you! Glad the music added to it 🙌
This is outstanding. Pure magic. Thank you. Keep on going. Great work.
WOW! This was so good!
Thank you! So glad you think so 🙌
Truly beautiful. Thank you for making this art!
Amazing watch, great job!
Thanks for watching 🙌
Stunning work. I was getting notes of North by Northwest and Rushmore
Need to check that out! Thanks for watching
Seeing the world through your eye. Amazing!!!!
Thank you so much for checking it out
You should have far more subscribers my man! They need to get you on movie sets with this type of quality. Same with your Tokyo/Japan work, love it!
Appreciate that so much! 🙌
Beautifully shot. Subbed!
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch
Awesome work dude, love the music you used and how the crescendo complemented the stark change in the scenery. This theme works so well on 16mm!
Thanks so much dude! Always nice when you find a song that can make the whole video work. I swear music gives most of my videos direction lol. Had no idea what I was going to do with this footage as I was filming. Glad you liked it!
That's lovely!
Thanks!
that transition on 2:58 is dope
Glad you liked it! I’m happy it worked out. It wasn’t exactly planned lol
@@illkoncepthow'd you line it up perfectly without plan? just curious
@@edwllcxn I just coincidentally filmed the same spot on my walk a month apart and then cropped in/lined it up in post. I didn't plan the transition while I was filming, but I guess I did want to show a before/after of the area.
Love to see it as always. I’ve never been to New York at that time of year. It looks like a beautiful time to be there.
Most definitely. It can be tricky to time as it’s short lived and varies every year, but awesome if you hit it! Thanks for watching dude 🙌
Awesome.
👏🏼 superb.
Thank you for crafting another great piece of art. Highly appreciated.
Thank you so much for watching!
absolutely brilliant, very inspiring thank you!
Like so much. Great.
Thanks for the support!
Wow incredible
Thank you so much
Wow! Aesthetics and picture quality reminds me of Serpico movie.
Very nice. I particularly liked the subtle shift from graded footage to flat at about 3:00 as it moved the mood from bright to dingy. Love the use of the Bolex gear.
Thank you! I filmed the same location in April and May - crazy how it changed in appearance. I’m glad I framed it similarly enough for that transition. A bit of luck on that part
outstanding
Thank you!
@@illkoncept :) yessss
This is great! Its what I aspire to when I pick up my bolex. Thank you!
Thank you so much! Means more than you know
Another gem discovered - sub well earned!
I think this is your best piece so far.
Really? Thanks so much!
this is masterpiece i hope you could mix it with vlog type thing, that way you build more connection with viewers and more interesting
Thank you! Yeah, I’ll have to get better at adding narration to some of these films.
Magical work man. I've been shooting 16mm on a Canon Scoopic M for the last two years. There's just something so special about motion film. So excited to follow along and see more of your work!
I totally agree. Thanks so much! Im so happy these videos are finding other 16mm shooters. So cool 🙌
Marvellous!
Thanks so much!
Incredible work man!!
Thank you so much! Always appreciated it
Fantastic Work
The cars and fashion give the game away, but it does have lovely timeless, dreamy/nostalgic feeling of old film. The seedy parts are a nice nod to films like Taxi Driver and other 1970s films of New York. ;-)
I forgot to mention, well done! I like your output! Keep 'em coming.
Thank you! Yeah, totally intend the film to be set in past times but I do love the dreamy/nostalgic feel that 16mm films give. Love that you mentioned Taxi Driver…that’s why I put a quote from it in the end. 🚕
Incredible.
Thank you so much!
Fantastic - as usual!
Thanks so much!
Well done, stunning shots. Subscribed
Thank you so much for the kind words
Incredible
Great work❤
Damn, thats beautiful!
Thank you so much 🥲
Tellement beau !
Merci!
Inspiring!
Thanks Luke!
Gorgeous!👏👏👏
Many thanks!
amazing work.
Thanks so much
Exquisite!
Thank you so much!
Hey Mike, intermediate photographer here just moved to Brooklyn. Do you have recommendations for getting into the street photography community? You're one of my inspirations and want to be around others who are experimenting with similar styles.
Awesome!
Thank you!
So glad to have found your page. Amazing work!! Are you shooting most of this handheld and stabilizing in post?
Thank you! Yeah, shoot handheld and stabilizing in Davinci. It’s not perfect but it works
@@illkoncept love that!
what if u film something that is totally from this time. is like someone from the past came with this camera and recorded the future. anyway this is realy nice to watch ! thanks!
Great shots ✌️
Thank you!
Very good 👏👏👏
Thank you! 🙌
i don't want to shoot digital anymore 😭 thank you!!
Me either. I wish film was cheaper 🫣🥲
Hey this looks awesome - I especially like the gritty first minute or so. Not sure if this has been asked, but do you usually expose for shadows or highlights with showing 16mm?
Thanks! I expose for the shadows because it’s a lot easier with film to save the highlights than the shadows. I actually overexpose a stop or two and bring it down in post.
@illkoncept, It's lovely footage. I hope you shoot more. One question: On the shots where the camera is not moving, did you have it on a locked off tripod? I ask because there is very slight movement. It doesn't distract from your film but I'd like to understand if that is introduced by the camera.
All this footage was filmed handheld and stabilized in post using DaVinci Resolve!
This looks great! How do you expose your shots ? Do you use a light meter ?
Thank you! I use a light meter app on my phone. Film has such nice dynamic range, so you can bring down highlights nicely if a bit overexposed.
Great job man!! Did you buy the camera modified for super 16 or did you get it modded yourself? i’m looking into getting a rex 4 modded for super 16 but i’m having trouble finding a place to do it
Thank you! I got it modded myself through Dr. Bolex but I do not recommend using him anymore. It was a nerve-racking experience getting my camera back from him. Email me at mike@illkoncept.com and I can recommend someone reliable if you’re interested.
High five from London. Still admiring your Japan videos !. Despite the wide park shots and flowers, there's a real tension and sense of claustophobia in this. [do you sense that in person, is that what inspires you ?]. Cool music too. Could lose myself for another 30 minutes of this, wishing you more subs and happy shooting, you're very cool
Thanks so much for the kind words. It’s hard to top that Japan work haha. Hoping to make some more longer format videos like that eventually.
I never really feel a sense of claustrophobia, but I didn’t want a heavy contrast between the beautiful side of blooming flowers and the grit and gloom of rainy days before there is any color from spring and what not. The music definitely made it feel a bit more ominous at parts.
Thanks for the love!
Great work, love the flower details. Was this a 2k or 4k scan?
Thank you. It was a 4k scan. Loses some resolution when I crop in past the film sprockets though. 🙌
Incredible. Where did you have your Rex 5 converted to Super16?
I used Dr. Bolex but I do not recommend anymore
So beautiful, question how do you record sound?
I put a Rode Wireless Go mic on my Bolex Strap to record the scene when the camera isn’t rolling…but a lot of these sounds are actually added in post processing and from stock sound effect databases.
@@illkoncept appreciate the response, i’m starting a super 8mm journey soon and want to work up to the bolex, incredible footage bro.
Quelle beauté
wunderschön
🙌🙌🙌🙌
The dynamic range of Kodak Vision stock is unparalleled. UNREAL! Beautiful and cinematic!
It really is! I was worried because I accidentally metered my 250D for 50D and it still turned out okay. You REALLY have to mess up to overexpose lol. Thanks for the kind words!
That’s very good to hear-I’m just trying Vision now. Been shooting mostly Ektachrome and Tri-X. Beautifully done-thank you
good❤❤タイトルがイイね😀
Bello
Gracias
I'm not sure about that Travis Bickle ending. It sounded a bit apocalypic.
True 😂😅 Could’ve probably done without it
This looks like heavily color-corrected footage from a 20-year old camcorder, that is, not bad.
Except it’s from a 61-year-old camera lol
@@illkonceptI know. I meant so say that film is overrated. Digital is as good or better as long as rolling shutter artifacts are not visible. I just watched your Nostalgia Train shoot, looks good. Don't mind snarky comments from passers by like me, maybe I am just jealous :)
That ending statement gave me scary fascist vibes.
lol oops I could’ve probably went without that quote - it’s from the classic movie “Taxi Driver.” Definitely didn’t mean it to come off that way tho.
