    Here is a video on Cuphead and videogame difficulty. While the game is hard, I believe it is actually good for the game. I didn't use any bosses past the 2nd part of the game to avoid spoilers! Please discuss in the comments below and let me know what you think!

    Actually even with books and movies their are plenty of things to impede your progress too. Language barriers. Being able to read. Watching a sequel to a movie without watching the first

    The way I see it, the point of games is to challenge you, with varying difficulty per game but I think if you learn how to beat cup head you, you are a more skilled gamer for it, reward is not given it is earned

    At a certain point a game ceases to be a game after all challenging aspects of said game are removed to accommodate a lower barrier of entry.

    • @Kintaku

      tioscha0 I agree. The point of a game is that it has a worthwhile goal. That's why people are bothered by Destiny 2 and other hand-holdy games.
      The problem is that we live in a society where everybody gets a trophy no matter how well they perform.
      I still haven't beat the game but finally getting past a boss that challenged me feels so good. And unlike most games, I find myself WANTING to go back and get a good score.

    Great video, Favyn. Your comparison of someone buying a guitar and expecting to be good at it is fantastic, and I will definitely be using it. This is a game that I bought with not much expectancy to beat it, but I'll sure as hell try. I mainly wanted to support the developers and commend them on their amazing work. A UA-camr by the name of Rags also did a video on this, called "Hard Games are Bad". It's pretty great and you should check it out if you haven't already. Anyways, keep up the good work!!

    I never threw my keyboard round the room while playing this, as I'm a person of quiet frustration. Honestly, once I'd figured out the boss's patterns and attacks, I knew it was only a matter of time and efficiency until I would beat it, and then, losing didn't really annoy me at all.
    The thing is, the amount of "whoo-hoos!" I yelled each time I'd beaten a boss or a run 'n gun level was amazing. And it wasn't like when you finish a painful experience and you want to rest afterwards. No: I wanted to fight the next boss. It makes the game addictive, especially to people with methodical memories like myself and many others. It's also the pride you feel after beating a boss. All of this, combined with the fluid movement, the phenomenal art style and the cheerful yet stressful soundtrack...
    I wouldn't say it adds to the experience at all. I'd say it *is* the experience.
    Also, I died against the onion about three times, just so you can wager my gaming skills.

  • @nathanh4237

    Cuphead should have an easier mode. Why? Because I don't have all the fucking time in the world to master the pattern of each boss and die a million times while trying. I bought the game and played almost through the first world but got tired because frankly, there was other shit i wanted to do with my life. Other games i wanted to play, work to get to, a child to take care of etc. I bought the game very early on because it looks cool, had good reviews and i hadn't played a decent platformer in a while.
    I don't care if the "way it's meant to be played" is the hardest difficulty. That's fine. The devs can make it as hard as they want. If they want to only allow you to get achievements via the hardest mode, or only unlock certain abilities behind the hardest mode that's fine too. But at least give me an option to beat the game in a reasonable amount of time. If i had more time on my hands, i wouldn't care as much and would just grind through it. A few years ago i would have been in the "Git good" crowd. But being where i am now and having spent money on the game only to know that i'm not going to finish it, i understand where people are coming from that want an "easy mode" and totally agree with them.

      Nathan Hoar Then you should have done your damn research before buying. If you don't have such time on your hands, look for games that cater to that need. I.E Journey or various other games.

    • @nathanh4237
      @nathanh4237 6 років тому +1

      LOL what research are you expected to do before buying a game? You read a couple reviews, it looks cool, you buy it. Its not a thesis. Nowhere in the reviews i read did they mention that there were no difficulty settings nor did they really mention the difficulty as a potential detriment. YOu can give players choice with how they want to play the game without sacrificing your vision for the game. its really not that hard.

      I think for me it's more of reaction time. I feel like thinks happen so fast in Cuphead that I get hit constantly, and sometimes it comes across as unfair. I think in Dark Souls you're given plenty of time to react, and it's usually you're fault if you die, even if you haven't experienced the boss before.

    The game looks clean and beautiful. I don’t think I’ll play just because I’m not very motivated to play 2D games, but I love the concept, specifically gameplay wise. I remember when the idea of beating a game was not only the ultimate goal, but it being out of my own expectations. Now most of the more trendy games make completion feel like a chore, where it seems the developers are trying to cater to the lowest of IQs.

I dont want to sound like a old man but maybe thats lost with todays gamers that grow up with cell phone games its free and if you dont like it download another one its free.

    I like a game that is hard, if you play a game and go through it in an hour, then there isn’t that much memorable unless the story is super enjoyable, and if you can’t win, that should push you to try harder to succeed, not to give up.
    But as a reference, the old cartoons such as Looney Tunes, each minute of content, was one month of work, and each cartoon was only six minutes long, so each of them took six minutes of constant work with no computers for help, and in modern times with games like Call of Duty, where they can make a game every year, and make millions, and can be hours long, how could you compete? So I congratulate them on their game, and I would gladly take three or five hours on about an hour of content, because I personally love a challenge.

    EDIT: Apparently Cuphead also has a fair share of Bullshit RNG and artificial difficulty padding. This reviewer gave an alternative opinion and demonstrated it very well.
    ua-cam.com/video/AYH2deCwb3M/v-deo.html
    FIRST EDIT:
    This game has a lot of Rayman vibes. The original Rayman on PS1 was an amazing title. It had a very interesting and well crafted story and a timeless art style that's still appealing to look at even today. Some games get released and what are they? One hit wonders, you play them and never touch them again. Difficulty is a good thing as it challenges people to do what they never thought they could achieve. I have no issue with this in video games. I've never beaten the original Rayman game for this reason (and for several others including deleted save data) but I still hold the memories of completing that one really hard level because nothing else even came close to the adrenaline and satisfaction upon realizing that the bosses ass was mine! Cuphead is the modern realization of that.

    Favyn this is great - fantastic video. I would disagree with you in only the slightest of ways - while Vidja is a beautiful medium (probably my favourite or second fav) it's not above others in this respect. I mean that no you can't interact with a novel, but just as in a difficult game you are not entitled to understand it. If people are going to argue against games being too difficult you could just as well argue against literature or film being too complex. Different, i know, but in the same area.
    Just a side note, my absolute favourite thing about all of your videos is how EXCELLENT they all are. Lol stupid. I mean how charitable you are to the opposing side while still arguing your point. You're respectful and treat the views of others seriously while providing the best possible ARGUMENT in response. You're a breath of fresh air, keep it up gah you rock!

      +Commander Hazim hey thanks for watching!
      I'm interested in hearing what you think is the "most powerful medium"
      I think anyone who enjoys art will have a preference to whatever they perform or partake in. For me that is of course games :)
      I just think games potentially can achieve just about anything because they are so versatile!

    • @michaelhartinger9130
      @michaelhartinger9130 6 років тому

      Favyn absolutely dude, that's actually a way of qualifying my own perspective! I'm closer to literature so I give that the prize but I'm hesitant because I know vidja is so immensely powerful. I give literature the grand prize because the mediation between reader and story actually brings one closer to the experience if that makes any sense. Film isn't as powerful because the visualisation is locked in, can't be changed. The distance that literature gives each reader allows them to supply and furnish the story from their own experiences and subconscious dispositions. The nature of literature forces everyone to construct the events in their mind - making the reader more active than with film or perhaps even games - and this brings them even closer to the events because that mediation is removed. The reader is more active in constructing the story while in games they're more active in making the story.
      Anyway sorry I'm a rambling idiot but a huge fan so I get flustered hahaha! Keep up the great content dude!! Papa bless!!

    • @epicsusserwritingmoment
      @epicsusserwritingmoment 6 років тому +1

      The most powerful median of art? Probably books although to be completely honest games definitely have the best disadvantage to advantage ratio as you the player interact with the story to some degree, the world building is the best in any art form and it has the best storytelling overall. There are more reasons but ultimately I don't feel it is utilised correctly often enough to justify saying that it is the most powerful form of art. Books meanwhile have been utilised fully many times whether it be in novel or comic form, even if games have the potential to be more affecting and powerful.

    • @epicsusserwritingmoment
      @epicsusserwritingmoment 6 років тому +2

      Good video by the way, I am yet to buy Cuphead but I am seriously considering it especially since the only game coming out or that is already out that seems really appealing is Wolfenstein 2. Are you playing that by any chance?

    • @FavynTube
      @FavynTube  6 років тому +3

      +Assassin Wolf Gaming I will starting next week! Have a few games I need to beat first!
      Also keep in mind. I said it was the most powerful medium, but in the next line I cite the reasoning is because of its "potential"
      Books are powerful because of their ability to paint a picture and be very descriptive and fleshed out. But games can actually put you in that picture, and they can be as long or as short as you want them to be. I agree we are not there yet, but that's kind of the point. We need to let games be what they are so WE CAN get there.

    • @epicsusserwritingmoment
      @epicsusserwritingmoment 6 років тому +1

      Favyn sorry the potential part slipped my mind while writing the comment, (interestingly enough I actually waited till you finished that part before I started the comment, so I guess that must be a change for UA-cam). Yes I completely agree there that if games are allowed to flourish than they will undoubtedly will become the most powerful median of art. There are signs of this already with some recent games, a lot of which I haven't played as of yet but aim to, exhibit A Wolfenstein. I think a huge issue is making an immersive and powerful story, while maintaining the actual game aspect of it, you can see this issue in things like Telltale's games. But yes I definitely agree that we need to allow them to flourish and also that games have the advantage that unlike books, and especially movies TV shows and music, they can take a huge amount of time to tell a story.
