I just saw raya n the last dragon. You guys go into real depth in the perspective of a producer about morals, reason, costume, sound, and visuals to complete the movie and I see the downside. But as a viewer who just wanna watch a movie, it was a good movie 🤣😂
I had that mindset too, but even then I noticed the inconsistency with the pose before they turned to stone at the end and it bothered me so much like whyyyy?! ... visuals were pretty though
The mesh of different cultures is something that Disney has always done. Even with lion king (including Beyoncé version) they bring in all the countries of Asia or Africa to create this utopia rather than pick one country/tribe and put energy to focus on that tribe. I think they’re improving since they were able to focus on one group for Moana and they have a proposed yourba princess movie coming.
@@francesca6124 quote from an article “Disney has acquired a pitch for Sadé, a live-action fairytale film about an African Princess, based on an original idea by Ola Shokunbi and Lindsey Reed Palmer”. The name is typical from the yourba tribe.
Moana was actually also a combined mesh of the different cultures in Polynesia..it didn't focused on one Polynesian culture, and jus mashed it up together..
Why I feel the line "save Martha" works is because Bruce never got over the death of his parents and even stated that using their deaths could work as possible contingency against him
If that's canon, that makes Superman a manipulative a-hole using someone's dead mother to save his own, who he couldn't even call mom in his dying breath.
I personally found the first 2 acts to be rushed as all hell. But I loved the animation, the story was still intriguing, the characters were likable, and I LOVED the third act. I would love to see a Raya TV show one day.
Would love to see you guys break down Crouching Tiger! We got a snippet but a full video would be pretty amazing! Great discussion like always. Thank you guys! 🙏🏽
This episode was great and refreshing, hearing honest takes on these films and your perspectives made this vid go by quickly while I was working! Keep it up boys!
The first podcast of my summer break. Can't wait to listen. As a half cambodian, I thought Raya was underwhelming and thought there would be a little bit more.
David, I did not know you were a comicbook movie fan. Really appreciate this video. This is my first time discovering your podcast . ZSJL is the GOAT. Nice crochet Sean Wotherspoons.
there's actually multiple story arcs that is drowned in constant retcons and reboots and retcons and reboots rinse and repeat (which i can understand how someone who isn't an avid reader of comic books can easily over look) where batman's no kill code is put the question and the show you, david was talking about was actually how the story arc plays out. I think the story arc is reiterated every time they reboot the dc canon (which is convoluted af)
I remember Michelle trachtenberg saying that joss whedon wasn’t allowed to be alone in a room with her during the run of Buffy 🤢 he’s an all around creep
The purple demons were supposed to be the opposite of the dragons, like the dragons were the source of life on earth and everything, while the demons were spawned to be the thing to be opposite and the death of life.
it's a little weird that joss made the woman look weak and is called sexist because he was the creator of buffy the vampire slayer where the lead is a strong female.
Thank goodness I was not the only one who didn't like Raya and how hard they were trying to push and rep us southeast azn people but like cmon man it was not it
1:05:18 (ish) Corridor Digital does a series where they react to good and bad stunts where they go into what makes a fight scene good (and they talk with professional stunt people). I think there was a clip where they reacted to Jason Stathom or Matt Damon where there were so many cuts that made you go, "are they actually fighting?" I like their Good/Bad CGI series too
Hey David and Ed, Great episode guys! Love you guys discuss Zack Snyder's Justice League! I am pretty sure the in future, there will be a fuckin documentary on the Justice League movie disaster. Zack Snyder said that cyborg is the heart of the story so it was very awesome to see that. I know that the studio gave Joss Whedon notes as well on what to take out from Synder's film and Whedon did his stuff as well. Snyder wanted to make a 3 part Justice League movie so that is why there was a cliffhanger. He is really passionate about these characters whether people like his vision or not. So who knows what will happen but I am happy that we saw what we were suppose to see. Also, the music score for the movie was EPIC as fuck!!! Take care dudes!!!
Rays was also (correct me if I’m wrong) the only Disney princess movie that wasn’t a musical, personally I love musicals so I don’t know how I feel about that
Is it coincidence that CinemaSins also just uploaded their "Everything Wrong with Raya and the Last Dragon In 19 Minutes Or Less" video today as well?! Hahaha!
The first time hearing the Korean superhero name, I thought they said “the gooky” and had to rewind the vid just to make sure. That I wasn’t hearing things😂
The idea behind Taeguki is essentially like Captain America. A patriotic hero who wears their flag as a suit. There’s also a Captain Britain for example. All their suits in the comics look ridiculous, but it’s comics so it don’t really bother me haha. The name tho, I agree whole heartedly haha. C’mon Marvel. I do believe he’s meant for the Korean fans in South Korea because we as Asians American are happy to just see an Asian superhero. But for Asians in Asia it tends to be more nationalistic. “I want to see a Chinese hero” or “I want to see a Korean hero,”. Amadeus Cho also goes by the pseudonym Brawn now and last I read comics, he was part of The Champions with Miles Morales and Kamala Khan. I think he’s an aight character. My favorite legacy hero that needs more love imo is Daredevil’s protege, Sam Chung aka Blindspot. Dude has a pretty crazy origin. *spoilers* I’ma nerd rant so feel free to ignore haha He gets his eyes ripped out by an maniacal serial killer Inhuman named Muse. So his mother brings him to The Hand’s base, a mystical organization that Daredevil fights a lot, to recover his eyes by making a deal with the beast of the hand (like making a deal with the devil). So his mom died and Sam is taken in by an organization called The Order of the Dragon. Then I became to poor to afford comics haha
I think HOPE is the overall theme of Raya not trust. Yes, she misplaced her trust in the beginning but why did she keep on fighting? She hoped by putting the stone back together it would save the world. Despite all the bad that had happened to Raya and when there is only a slim chance of averting the end of the world, she had to cling onto hope that the dragon would be able to fight the "shadows" and hope the backstabbing beyotch made the right decision in the end but you guys brought up so many good points. I loved this episode with Ed, like always!
I gotta admit that the show The Boys is a good portrayal of what it would be like if heroes live in our world where money rules everything. It's a dark concept and do I like the idea that not all heroes are good people.
Batman's whole thing is that he's at the peak of what a human can do and also maybe that no one knows who he actually is apparently. He's insanely skilled in everything but not the actual best at them, if you don't include his detective skills. Lady Shiva is a better fighter and has kicked his ass a few times. John Constantine is a better tactician as he doesn't need a lot prep time to figure out ways to defeat his enemies, or to outsmart both Heaven and Hell while still having them fear him. Lex Luthor is smarter than Batman as well if you just base it on IQ, but he's even been able to outsmart the smartest creature in all of DC.
i respectfully disagree on Raya. when you compare to current societal issues amongst races here in the US, i think it is very comparable. in the end, just like in real life, it would be great if all the different "tribes" could come together to make a greater whole. also, it's a movie for kids with shorter attention span...4 hours is a bit much to try to keep kids interested. p.s. enjoy the podcasts. keep it up. 👍
ngl, i watched justice league in theaters… i didn’t know ray fisher’s character was cyborg until the final battle where i think he said “booyah” :/// and i watched teen titans religiously as a kid so joss whedon is fr a criminal lol… . . let’s not even get into his racism/sexism evident in the Marvel films he was apart of
The only reason why I think someone could say Raya was in the "wrong" was because she only wanted to put the gem back together for "selfish" reasons: getting her Ba back. But all of her actions and distrust are still valid. What'd people expect when a 12 year old essentially has to navigate jungle and hostile tribes all by herself lol.
Raya is a kids movie, that's why it moves so fast. Kids don't have the attention span. The baby thing was weird though, but it's so disney can make toys and possibly a spin off.
Im so happy you guys liked the Zack Snyder Cut. I remember watching the Whedon one and walked out the movie theater like wtf was that shit so watching the Snyder Cut actually made more sense and it just felt complete and way better.
I think the same argument for LGBTQ+ rep and the SEA rep, quantity vs quality, is demonstrated with Raya. As a SEA myself, I love Raya, like love love. Bought it and watched it at least 20 times. It was the first representation I'd seen of SEA in media I consume and I was ecstatic to see all the foods, clothes, and items I'd grown up with. Buuuut, I also recognize all the shit aspects of it: Rushed and contradictive in it's central message about trust. Majority of the cast isn't even SEA. Tried to mush all of SEA culture together. Sisu's (the dragon) design felt incredibly lazy. The music was put together by a white guy. Those are just the complaints I remember. So at this point, it's still the quality over quantity. For me, I don't even have enough quantity to start seeking/demanding quality, even though I should. The fear is that if sub par works are immediately dismissed as bad, then there won't be any more efforts to create those kind of works.
I'm personally glad Snyder isn't doing more DC movies. The Justice League SnyderCut was better than the Whedon stuff, but Snyder is a bad storyteller. The Nightmare/Injustice universe was unearned because there's no real contrast, as in things are already pretty dark in Snyder's world, so showing a worse world isn't all that interesting. The Injustice universe works because we have recognisable heroic figures going off the deep end. They did the same thing successfully in the Justice League cartoon in 2003, the Justice Lords. Oh, quick editing in fight scenes is the worst thing to happen to action movies, this is the Bourne Movies fault!
Really? I really enjoyed Raya, didn't catch any of the audio / video/ cultural / continuity things you talked about. Better than Soul. Not as good as Coco.

I honestly didn't like Raya and the last dragon, and was irritated half the time. My friends overhyped the movie for me...
Yeah it was okay. The trailer looked good, but I agree with David and Ed about why they didn't like Raya.
Movie makes no sense. It basically says "If someone tries to genocide you just hug it out and maybe they will realize their mistake".
Yo David, this podcast was dope! I enjoyed this discussion of different shows/movies :)
love the conversation David - but um, where can i get those Nike house slippers? lol
