7min20: what is happenning when you're panning things L and R so you need to fix things with a mid side eq?

Whenever you Pan two signals full Left and full Right, the information becomes louder in the sides but remain the same in the center, that means in a stereo context you will hear the panned signals louder but in a mono context they will remain as original or even more quiet. And so to counter that you can use a mid side EQ to reduce the loudness of the panned signals on the sides (stereo) to match the mono context. If you need me to do a video on this please let me know.

@@mixesfromafrica I don't get it. Why using a mid side when there is no middle? If you reduce the panned sides, then the sound on a stereo source will be less than what you need. Then if you hear it on a mono source, it will combine the two and so if you've been reducing the sides, well, the sound will be combined and reduced as well in mono. Not sure to understand. Of course a video would be much appreciated!

When a basic track is in the center(not panned), it is actually dividing its signal by sending 50% to the Left and 50% to the Right. And so let’s say you full pan that track to the Right, in doing that you will be sending a 100% of the signal there, that means that Right channel is now 2 times louder that when the track was in the middle. When you listen in mono, that signal on the Right will collapse and the signal will be divided again between the two channels. That’s why that track will be louder on the sides in stereo and calmer in the middle in mono. Please note that for this case the Tracks panned full left and full Right are not identical to each other. For example 2 different singers, one panned left, the other right.
That is different from when have to 2 identical signals, one on the Left and the other on the Right, this signals will instead form a summation and will sound louder in mono, that’s because the signals are identical and so they came together and combine. In our context for example doubling and panning a single vocal take left and right.

@@mixesfromafrica @Mixes From Africa Panning two identical track L and R will sound the same as one mono but just louder. That's basic understanding. But for the rest i'm really scratching my head. If the sound gets louder when you pan it hard left or hard right why not just dropping the volume instead of using a mid side eq?
