      Question sir. I'm a long time fan. . . Macbook pro mid 2012 white screen on start up. I thought it was the HD cable. . . Changed it. Still nothing. Next I changed the drive. Still not finding a drive. When I attempted to restore mac os I can't find a drive to download it onto. What is the issue?

    For the dude going in on the criticisms while blocking anyone from replying to his comments...
    1) Miles of wire I have that does the job > wire I have to go out and buy and wait for.
    2) "Proper" tweezers? As in.. it is improper to use one's preference? Angled tweezers are a pain in the ass. I have at least five pairs of them here, not as sturdy when I want to grab and shove something where I want it as the straight ones.
    3) I could have used a chiseled tip, but didn't feel like changing the tip.
    This entire job is meant to take about 1 minute. From replacing resistors, capacitors, chip, and running jumper wire. It was going to be miserable regardless of the tip I chose to use, since I can't see or look at what I am doing anyway. I realized this going in, but kept the camera in so one could see troubleshooting from beginning to end. If beating your chest on all the crap you would have done differently makes you feel better, feel free to do so, but do realize how lame this is when the entire reason this job was a nightmare was so that I could post it for others to watch and learn something about motherboard fault troubleshooting. Really, ask yourself how you would do soldering looking up into a TV with half a second of input lag on its HDMI port..

    Honestly, the beginning part where you go through testing the power lines, but actually showing how to do it is super helpful for the new guy. I feel like a lot of that gets quickly mentioned but never fully explained and that's why people have a hard time getting started. It's embarrassing to ask where the red probe goes when you know nothing, but putting in those beginning basic steps are so much more helpful than I think you think they are. I don't know maybe that's just me, I don't usually comment anyway, but great video.

      Justin Millman The problem with most teachers is they have forgotten what it is like to be clueless. As a result, they leave out all the parts they think you should already know.

      I hear that, you do something a 1000 times, and you forget that even the easy parts weren't common sense at one point.

      @rossmanngroup  9 років тому +8

      I think the same is true of teaching in elementary school level, and with parenting. It is easy for adults to forget what it was like to be a kid, the same way it is easy for a professor to forget how difficult it was to learn the first time around.

    Hi Louis, I've been watching your videos lately because my old macbook pro was damaged by liquid a couple of months ago. I ended buying new macbook pro. But after watching your videos and trying some of your diagnostic methods. I found that the only thing that was broken with my old MP is the display!! I fixed it. Now I have two Macbook Pros. Cool in a way but, also expensive.

    Hey Luis maybe a bit late but Since I dabbed with Camera repairs.. Those lenses are not fixed, most of those cameras have a screw on type lens which you can turn in and out to change focus range. Take the camera appart and check the lens mount screw Assembly to see if you can pull in out out to match the Microscope. You can also build a DIY riser for the Camera on the Microscope . Good luck I have fixed many Go Pro's due to the lens being on too tight from factory.

    Hello Louis, I happen to run across this video searching for why the Macbook Pro wouldn't turn on. On another UA-cam channel someone led to using jumpers across the power pads. That didn't work. After seeing your video I checked the power on the fuses with my volt-meter on the logic board. No power across the fuses, but I do have power on the board connected to the power supply. My guess is that one of the fuses is toasted unless there's a regulator IC chip that's causing the issues?

    Loved the video Louis, found your channel after doing a PS3 reflow and found your discussion about why reflowing / reballing is shit and doesn't work. I didn't understand about how heating the chip fixes the problem, but I found some articles relating to Mobile Ions which backs up your theory.
    Your work and discussion is very clued up. Watched this video all the way through, gave me some nice ideas and understanding on how you do things and troubleshooting procedures you used. Glad you decided to show the video rather than use the microscope so understand your frustration.
    Couple of things
    1) The schematic program you use that you hate so much. Landrex / Nets, is it any good would you recommend it. Or would using the schematics from PDF's work. Or do you like using them in conjuction with each other
    2) You mentioned when checking the schematics that the manufacturers have certain tolerances built in for the rails. Are these tolerances usually discussed within the schematics. Is this just a value you tend to follow from experience (ie within 5-10%) or is it taken from knowledge of the circuits and the resistors/capicitors used.
    I loved the video, you have a relaxing personality and it's easy to listen to. I always used to follow EEVBLog and now follow you as I thoroughly enjoy your videos and you're very much a perfectionist with the work you do

    Thanks for this video! I feel the same way about contractors and repair stores. I'm trying to figure out how to fix an epic fail by Simply Mac (Vanderbilt location). They tore up the logic board in my mother's Macbook Pro. All she wanted was more internal memory. She should have waited to pay them. They did refund her money, but now she's left with a broken Macbook. :( I'll research videos and tutorials like your's before I ever go back to Simply Mac...they Simply Suck!!!

    Here's a tip- When the pad is oxidized and the solder won't stick.
    You can use rosin flux on dewicking braid and clean the pad to fresh copper. Though @22:17 the pad to the cap shows the visible break in the trace.
    OR you can scrape away the enamel from the trace, and jumper with solder. Then with a tooth pic apply a drop of clear or green fingernail polish to cover after the IC is replaced.
    The difference between clear flux and rosin flux is the oxidation of the petroleum based flux cleans the solder pads.

    Hey Louis!
    Why didn't you use a copper tape to connect a chip and resistor?
    You used wire... but i think using copper tape might be better than wire at this case.

    • @rossmanngroup
      @rossmanngroup  9 років тому

      +woonsik yeo I have wire everywhere and have no copper tape.

    • @woonsikyeo846
      @woonsikyeo846 9 років тому

      +Louis Rossmann Of course using wire is very useful.
      It is good to connect to resistors, capacitors and chips has long pin(LVDS Connector). On this video, it is hard to connect to resistor and very short pin of U7200(LCDBKLT, ISL6259). So i suggest using copper plate tape.

    so the first step of yours is that you measure the main rails, which is kind of an easy step because they are all listed on one page of the schematic. but with iphone schematics i just had to find out that there is nothing like that page where all the rails are listed. it kind of just starts with the details of each circuit.
    am i overseeing something or is troubleshooting not as easy with an iphone as with a macbook?

    Following your videos with interest. I have a similar fault but no water damage. I get a green light on charging lead but no power up. Now I'm trying to learn so working my way through the Supply voltages from the schematic and reached the PP5v-S5-LDO. This is fluctuating between 3.9v to 5.v on cap C7273. Is my next stage to check the rails that PP5V-S5_LDO supplies like PP5v_S5_tpad, PP5v_S5_p1v5ddrfet, PP5v_S5_p5vsusfet?
    Any help much appreciated

    Whats your thoughts on torrented schematics for someone with no budget and starting out? I am just asking for broken macbooks from local classifieds to fix and selling them on ebay (although at the moment Im just giving the macbooks to friends and family for beer money). Schematics I presume are really expensive?

    • @rossmanngroup

      +OnlineBackupServices I don't endorse piracy when there is a legitimate, legal outlet to purchase content or intellectual property in a reasonable fashion.
      If I ask Apple to give me a schematic and I offer them $1,000,000, they won't give it to me. So, torrent away.

    Hi Louis. Firstly I just want to say I love your work and thank you for sharing your skills and talent with us.
    I have a Macbook Pro 820-2879 which I now have the charging light working (thanks to your video). But it doesn't turn on when I short the board power button - it shows 3v though. On the MCP89MZ chip 2 of the big caps read a short, is that normal ? I've even replacement the chip twice. and even on other boards I have these caps read a short (but old boards turn on then turn off after 3 secs).

    • @rossmanngroup
      @rossmanngroup  8 років тому

      +Gurjinder Virdee ohms law will tell you why chip that takes 20 watts on 1v line is not shorted to ground

    • @GurjVirdee
      @GurjVirdee 8 років тому

      Thanks for the reply. But I don't see the answer. What's qv got to do with the Power Button Pad on the Mobo? And why does the MCP89MZ have 2 caps showing as being shorted?

    • @rossmanngroup
      @rossmanngroup  8 років тому

      +Gurjinder Virdee what line are the caps you think are shorted to ground on?

    • @GurjVirdee
      @GurjVirdee 8 років тому

      +Louis Rossmann It's 2 / 4 big caps which are on the MCP89MZ , not on the Mobo. they're showing 0 ohms and my meter is buzzing to tell me they're shorted.
