The price of spares is one of the reasons for the high level of bike theft.
The manufacturers do their customers no favours (although Royal Enfield don't try to screw theirs to the same extent as the other makes).
After your experience there is no way I would be replacing the RT with another BMW no matter how well it fits...
BMW sorted it out eventually, and certainly bikes from 2010-on are absolutely fine. All manufacturers have vulnerabilities, remember Honda and their cam-chain tensioners? And to be fair to the brand, most R-series beemers are doing well over 100k miles with very few issues.
Have to agree, I wouldn't be buying another one.
.
The Bmw abs pump is garbage, and they know it. Make sure you get the fluid changed every year no matter how much mileage done, would also get rid of the BMW rubber hoses, these drop to bits internally, fit new braided lines.
Thanks for the advice Nick
@@Steve-Clark This guy knows what he is talking about!
I change the brake fluid at every service (6000mls) on my R1150RT.
Better to get rid of the bike...double quick.
The less fancy gizmos on a bike the less to go wrong .I have been riding for around 50 years never needed ABS just feathered the brakes off & on if felt them locking up .My new bike has abs but not by my choice ,given the choice I would chose a non ABS bike with carburettors any day .But these days due to daft EURO specs we get no choice in the matter .Having said all that if you must have a BMW the RT is the one to go for ,so enjoy many good safe miles of riding 👍
Your right about all the gizmo's fella
I live in Trinidad, West Indies and imported a new R1150RT from Germany in 2004. At 48,000kms the ABS module failed (2017). On the net I found out that the ABS pumps fail. A new one from the USA cost US$2,700 at the dealer, and I would have to pay shipping and astronomical taxes !!
I removed the existing unit, modified the lines for master-to-slave connection, and used the bike. I have had fuel pump failure, starter failure, and other problems with this bike. I certainly treated it well, certainly no abuse.
I will not buy another BMW ever like the contributor of this video..........brake failure ?........And he goes off to buy another ?
I still believe there is NOTHING like the Japanese machine. Trinidad & Tobago. West Indies.
.
There is no way that any ABS system should ever stop your brakes from working in the event of an ABS failure. What a dreadful and dangerous design.
Your right but unfortunately thatsxwhat happened and it could have been fatally worse my friend.
ABS pump failure was a common problem on numerous BMWs back in the day such that many people used to bypass/remove the pump due to the exorbitant price of a replacement unit. Never heard of anyone losing all their brakes though; scary.
Personally I won't now touch BMWs due to the numerous problems I had on my last BMW an R1200GSA which I loved riding but just couldn't trust it. Numerous friends have also left the marque due to reliability problems and the exorbitant labour and OEM part costs from franchised dealers at that time.
I do love the RT tho and should be ok with 2018 model plus they also gave me 2yrs full BMW warranty which fully covers me for everything. So that's the first 2yrs worry free 🤣 Ride Safe mate
I think I would have eliminated the ABS and turned it into an ordinary non-assisted braking system, should be just a case of changing some hoses, plumbing it all up the same way brakes used to be done before ABS came along.
Yes Dave loads of people mentioned ABS removal mate.
Well Steve, BMW know how to take the piss with the ABS pump. And obvious never did a risk assessment if the pump failed. Somebody should have been shot at dawn, like you said what do if fails on a motorway 😱😱😱
Personally I think I would have junked the ABS pump, and converted it back to a fully basic brake system 👍
Good luck with the new bike 👍👍👍
Thanks Nigel a few people have commented about just binning the abs but Id lost confidence in the old one mate.
Did your bike have the “whizzy” brakes where the servo motor whines when you apply the brakes? If you did, when the pump fails you still have what BMW call ‘residual braking’. The problem is when you are used to the servo brakes, you have to stand on the foot brake and have a gorilla grip on the front brake to get some braking. If you only apply normal pressure it’s as if there are no brakes. You can get the servo removed and have normal braking but without ABS for £200-300.
Been there!
Trust me Keith I was jumping on back brake and squeezing front brake as hard as I could but there was nothing my friend and loads of people have said about just removing ABS all together but I had no trust in this model after that happened. Ride safe mate.
Hi Steve. It is so lucky that you are a very experienced bike rider. Had you not been, the ending could have been a lot different. I have forwarded your video to a friend of mine who is a vehicle examiner at DVSA because I think they should know about this. On the subject of recovery, I had the same issue with my wife's car some years ago. They would only take the car to the nearest garage (within 10 miles) where it could be repaired. I think it is quite common but until you need it you don't know that you could be left in a town or country garage with no way too get home. Quite shocking. Anyway some good has come of it because now you have an even better bike that looks brilliant.
Could have been a lot worse your right and felt I had to mention recovery as thst was not a good experience either and like you say people just think they will be taken home. Thanks Mike
Yeah, it is known problem with pre 2008 iABS (servo) on all R1200 bikes. There was heaps of noise about it in the forums but BMW never recalled it. In my view only way to recall it would be to buy back bikes. They knew it is failing in a field. Some failed and still had some residual braking some failed like your one.
They silently dropped this system in 2008 claiming it is not "compatible with traction control" system introduced on 2008 bikes.🤔 Also 2008, and onwards bikes do not have servo pump (that is what failed on your one, not ABS). They only have ABS and if pump fails you have full braking power from lever still available. I wonder how did they come up with this novel idea. 😆
Anyway, admitting that system is failure would bring liability issues into focus for BMW. Here in Australia BMW dealers did not even want 2003 to 2007 models as trade ins. They told me to sell it privately. Well, I stripped my GS to parts and sold them on ebay.
Removing and converting brakes to conventional brakes isn't an option as you'd have to tick YES box "is vehicle modified?" in insurance contract. If you don't and later have an accident, then it is your problem. Why would someone risk that? It is cheaper (and safer) to just get rid of it. You did the right thing. Only you had to do it lot lot earlier. 🙂. Either way it is good excuse to get new bike ! Enjoy ! 😃
Wow thank you so much for taking the time to explain all of that information I really do appreciate it my friend.
Begs the question why you bought another BMW? No good reason why an axillary system like ABS can failure cause catastrophic brake failure, dangerous design from BMW. I've heard that people just bypass the ABS system because of the cost.
Many have said about the bypass route fella
That’s just ridiculous. Apparently those things can be refurbished.
But ANY bike that can become that dangerous due to one component failing, should not even be considered, in my opinion.
If you’ve got brake pressure, the brakes should work. I would be researching legal action against BMW.
Certainly thinking about it mate.
And you bought another one???????
I had enough issues with mine that l bought a Kwacka 1000GTR and lived worry free from then on.
No more rides home, in the trailer !!!
New one comes with the full BMW 2yr warranty so gonna see how trouble free it is for those 2 yrs my friend. And if not it'll go.
There should’ve been a recall or a free repair...and not refitted with the same faulty ABS pump either. No way would i have bought another BMW after that.
Watched all your vlogs and enjoyed them all..looking forward to new ones. Ride safe 😎
Thank you Susan appreciate that and your right about the recall. Stay safe lady.
Not sure why a abs pump should create a full failure rather than a non abs assistance, now that's a very poor design. Personally I wouldn't have gone back to a BMW again with the obvious lack of customer support from the issue you had.
.
I think i would have steered clear of Beemers after those shocks, the brake loss with no warning then the price of spares! My God talk about taking your eyes out and coming back for the sockets!! Oh and thanks for the tip about breakdown cover, another money making scam from people who say they have your best interests at heart! Yer right !!! Ride safe Bud.
Cheers for the comment my friend.
O.M.G Steve imagine you were barreling up to a stonked roundabout on the M.6 , our local shop is full of B.M.W . at one time there was 5 G.S.Sin it , enough said, take care Mate
Thanks Fred
It your fault that it broke down though not the bikes. i mean i think you are supposed to keep bikes in your garage and only take them out of said garage to wash and clean then put them straight back. do you not know anything about bikes steve? 😀 lovely new motor tho m8 👍
🤣 cheers fella
Honda Pan European all day n night you pay your money !
Would still have my Pan Bob if it hadn't got to heavy for me mate.
The main thing is your uninjured Steve. A very sore subject matter for me for a number of reasons. I am not commenting on peoples choices or getting sucked into brand snobbery but It is great to see you willing to share numbers with regards to cost and you pointing out this particular brand freely admit they have a known faulty part they intend to do nothing about and the extortionate amount they are happy to charge you with no respect for your safety moving forward. Speaks heaps about the company. During my time in the secretive motorcycle industry I had my eyes opened massively especially by some of the bigger brands. Sadly your experience is the minut tip of a massive iceberg of what goes on. Great vid Steve. Stay safe fella.
Thanks for that insight Paul it was a very hairy experience and one that I had to share with fellow riders. Stay safe bud
Lovely bike and all that but that sort of failure would put me off the brand totally. No recall for a known dangerous fault, inexcusable! I'm an unashamed Honda fan. Just changed my 2015 Crosstourer DCT (too top heavy for me now i'm getting on a bit) for a 2021 NC750x DCT. It has a small fault on the ride by wire throttle which was immediately subject to a model recall. That's service.
Big fan of Honda myself Kevin loved the Pan Euro I had. ride safe mate.
I had exactly the same issue with Bennetts breakdown cover but back in those days it was an optional extra, where now it comes with your insurance. It still costs you, as they will have loaded your premium to cover the cost (you get nowt for free).
Treat yourself to some proper breakdown cover, well worth it for the miles you do.
I have AA and got recovered 120 miles from Anglesea to home, which would have cost me way more than a few years worth of cover, so well worth it in my book.
Mmmm: break failure. only ever had it once, luckily it was in the car, but I had no warning and shoved it in the back of a 40 TON truck, thankfully it was at low speed and I walked away, I've NEVER bought another Renault since.
Typical of BMW to make it so you can only fit their over priced SHAT NAV.
Hope you enjoy many miles on the new stead.
Thanks for taking the time to leave such a long comment my friend and at the moment the new bike has FULL BMW warranty which fully covers me for everything for the next 2 years but after that I will be taking out seperate cover like you say. Ride Safe fella
Known fault on BMW ABS problems. Up to late 2006 they had power assist brakes. Nippy normans sell a conversion for under £100. My late 2007 has a different non assist ABS system but that is crap as well. Lucky when the thing went wrong the brakes run normally except for the ABS.
Still can't believe there were no call backs on that system my friend.
@@Steve-Clark Agree there should have been a major recall
You smashed that video, well done Steve!
The RT is my favourite bike, but I own a 98 r850r and they had problems back in the fast with abs pumps and many people just cut the pump out of it and fitted braided lines. That being said the same problem shouldn't have been going on in layer bikes. They should know better. Not good enough when it comes to safety at the highest degree failing. Congrats with the banger of a video👍😉
Thanks Exeter rider agree with all you say my friend ride safe fella.
A common problem... On the earlier models, a bit like the rust. Had mine completely removed at a local shop. Like you already mentioned, can't believe it was never on a re call 👍
I still can't believe there was no recall my friend. Ride safe
Great story but for me it underlines why I don’t ride BMWs ( Buy More Warranty). Great to ride but risky to own. Been riding Hondas for 30 plus years and yet to have a breakdown.
Yeah Stephen I had a Pan European for 12 years and no probs. I do have a FULL BMW 2 year warranty on the new one.
@@Steve-Clark fair play it’s a lovely looking machine. I hope you enjoy it.
Thanks for the heads up on the insurance Steve; all good with mine.
Is that top box the one from your old bike?
Wow how observant are you it is indeed off the old bike well spotted fella.
2018 BMW R1200 RT........... Very Nice vintage year !! Good purchase. Happy and Safe Riding. Cheers 🥂/🍻
Thanks a lot fella much appreciated. Ride Safe my friend.
Gee whiz! Hope you had you brown cords on when those brakes failed! Unbelievable that a company like BMW should allow such a flawed design on the road! Well done for bringing it to the attention of the biking public and especially owners of similar models out there who may be blissfully unaware of this potentially fatal flaw! I'd definitely write an angry letter to BMW about this just to see what if any response you get though they probably don't care now because it is an old model. Absolutely scandalous but glad you are safe mate and here's to many more miles of SAFE motoring on the new bike!
Cheers Will appreciate you taking the time to comment fella, ride safe mate
the ABS pump issue on those models have been known among BMW riders for years
It’s not a flawed design.
It’s one of the most sought-after bikes secondhand!
We weren’t “happy people” to watch and learn about the brake failure. You were “lucky” that although down hill, you were able to stop. The breakdown cover is an example of how companies advertise the positives and let us all rely on reading the small print for the terms they know we won’t be satisfied with. Loving the new bike Steve but we would watch your videos on a Honda Super Cub 125 😂 ATB Steve for the new year. Looking forward to seeing you on your adventures in 2022… and beyond.
Thanks and I was lucky your right. The insurance is a bit of a scam to be truthful but suppose it's a lesson on the reason you should always check that SMALL print 😡. ATB to you and yours for 2022 my friend.
My Kawasaki GTR1400 can develope a similar problem if not serviced properly. Every year I fully flush the brake system to make sure the abs pump has fresh fluid in it, apparently this prevents abs failure. My old 1990 Kawasaki Gtr 1000 that had flat earth technology had no such issues and was a fantastic machine....
PS... Health to ride with the new machine..
PPS..... I'm intrigued to know BMW's opinion on matters if the brake failure had have ended in a serious accident. Globally that scenario has bound to have happened... Why wasn't the bike recalled with such a serious and life threatening issue 😮😮??!!
PPPS....... Dec rules🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dec rules ha ha love it.
I'm surprised you got another bmw, a lot of the bmw Gs models had pump problems and a lot of owners took the pumps off and rode with non abs.
A few people have mentioned just taking the ABS off the bike.
Oh dear, what a 'fix.'
No brakes or no ABS.
Is that story about the brakes true ? Seems unbelievable
How old was the bike ? Was it serviced properly?
Anything with moving parts, can break ! Even a £30K Rolex watch or a £30M jet engine … you do know that don’t you ?
Absolutely true Max and it was a 2006 model with FULL service history. As stated in the video this was a common fault with models in the 2003-2007 year bracket.
No doubt the old one looks the best but that’s just my opinion. Maybe if the headlight fairing was matching the red and the wheels was silver it would change my opinion Both look very nice though👌
Cheers fella
I guess in a way it was fortunate the bike was sophisticated enough to warn you of the failure. New bike is lovely. You did explain why you chose the same manufacturer but my money would more than likely have been spent elsewhere. All the best.
Know what your saying Jay but really do love the RT's mate.
Enjoy your new bike sir. Just watched your video on the NC500 , very good.
Been up there about 15 years ago on my Vmax, going to do it again in 2022 on my Busa gen 2 . Subscribed to your channel.
Hope you and all your mates enjoy trips up here to the North of Great Britain.
Tommy in Glasgow. HAPPY DAYS!
🇬🇧🏴
We all love Scotland Thomas best part of the UK by far for riding Bikes. Thanks for the sub mate.
BMW ABS pumps and fuel strips from a certain era are notorious for failing. The new RT looks lovely, I always think they look better in the flesh than on screen. They don't quite appeal to me yet, though, I'm quite happy with my 2007 R1200R for the moment (and yes, both the fuel strip and ABS packed up, but I managed to fix the ABS for about £25). Happy riding, Steve, might see you out there one day.
Cheers Chris I have found since that RTs from 2003 to 2007 were prone to these defects. Ride Safe mate
People buy BMW's because they want a motorbike that won't break down. They do want them to brake and it's a disgrace the faulty parts aren't replaced by better ones for free or at cost price. Buy a Beamer and 'want to have adventures' doesn't rime.
Thanks for the comment Marius
Hi Steve, been a while and you come back with this shocker, you did well to remain cool, calm and collected, did you check to see if a recall was ever put out for this issue? New RT looks proper good, I test rode the latest RT when my GS was in for service, probably the only BM that I put my leg across and rode and felt right at home , prefer the GS though, look forward to your thoughts after you are bonded? Take care and stay safe, have a cracking Christmas and all the best for 2022, we shall have to meet up?
Thanks Derek I did check and there were no recalls on any ABS problems which was worrying. Hope you have a great Xmas and wishing you all the best for 2022 my friend.
Really nice I had the 07 model. Kept on dropping it. Too heavy my hip’s ached. Traded for a Forza 750Scooter.
As we get older bikes get heavier Marcus hence the reason I sold the Pan European.
Naughty naughty Bennett’s,, I’ll be checking mine,, remember when fully com MENT fully comp…not these days,, they all want extra££ for everything…😖
Yeah Gary very crafty small print scam.
I did same with my red 05Rt(Gearbox went)sold it to my m8 for £1200:bought. 16plate Rt,but not sure of front brake!🤔Comes back to far.My lower back hurts after 20,time for a change methinks!Goodbye BMW!
.
Sweet ride Steve. I always had sort-tourer's until a hamstring issue forced me to go to a bit smaller bike. I had a 2013 Yamaha FJR and now after a short 2 yr period with a 2020 Speedmaster have a brand-new T-120. I guess I'm not a cruiser kind of guy.
Cheers Steve quite a variety you've had there fella
Hi Steve Just to let you know I'm the proud owner of a BMW R1200 RT 2015 . After 12 months with the Honda CB500 X I missed the Beemers to much and now I'm in remission the specialist said go out and enjoy life, well tags what you do on a Beemer . Now with the summer upon us I'll be out on it as much as possible . I wish I new how to send you a photo but I think it's not much different from your new one . Ride safe ,take care Mal in Australia
Good choice Mal enjoy riding in the summer over there, we are at the stage of winter so as you know we will only get out odd days now if out at all. Ride Safe my friend from Oz.
Every single ABS I've owned except the one on my '20 Zero has had problems. No problems when 'disconnected'. All these expensive 'upgrades' you have to pay for are mostly expensive sales and marketing gimmicks and extra stuff to break down :(
No truer words said my friend
BMW are overrated machines. I've got one. They are a very good bike, but BMW owners put them on a very lofty pedestal. I also have a Ducati, and it's the better finished, higher quality machine of the two. Mind you, so it bloody should be for the price and servicing costs lol. But, I have the utmost confidence it will go and stop and do it very well, indeed. My BMW I use for shopping, or tootling around country roads, although the kerlunk of the gear shift frightens many a cow or sheep as I pass lol.
That fault you experienced could very easily have been fatal. I recall seeing a UA-cam video about a BMW GS owner discovering his much vaunted multi link front suspension literally fell apart, and he was seriously injured. Seemingly, BMW had had a significant number of such delightful incidents before they actually made the design safe.
I agree with all said here but the BMW just feels like it was built around me and fits me perfectly. This is the reason I bought another one, thanks for watching and commenting my friend.
Had a 05 1200lt. Well under warranty it racked up $10,000 in repairs. That was 50% of bikes original value. When I traded it off it was showing signs of needing another $3000 in parts. If bmw would address known issues and parts cost they might get me on another one of there bikes. The KTM I replaced thr bmw with just had its first failure after 11 years and 100,000 miles.
Nice one with the KTM fella
Well, no better bike for engine braking, the flat twin is like a tractor. I remember pulling off the A3 fast down a slip road on an R1100S and changing down too quickly, the engine braking locked up the back wheel and all of a sudden I was sideways. Pulled the clutch in and fortunately it straightened up. I have an R1200R now, and a healthy respect for the engine braking.
Basically was all that saved me my friend.
Thanks for the heads-up on the breakdown cover 10mile BS. What a swizz, you might want to contact Bennet's and let them know., they make enough out of us in insurance fees. You may have a good claim against BMW. I had a similar thing happen to me, but in a car. I found out, no matter how old or how many owners the machine had. If it has any type of recall on it, it has to be sorted for free by the manufacturer. They pulled all sorts of tricks to put me off. I had an excellent adviser and made me stick with it. First contact BMW and see if had been recalled for the ABS pump, if it had, then you've got a very good chance of being reimbursed all of your costs. Worth checking out, from what you have said, imho, you have a good case.
There were no recalls for this fault unbelievably my friend.
It happened to my mate when we were out one sunday,, nearly killed him,, we both got rid of the RT's after that,, most folks have them deactivated and do away with the abs units,, a dangerous bike in our opinion, and thank who ever that he wasn't killed,, I had a GS aswell sharing the same abs pump,, so that big old dog had to go too,,, and exactly the same thing happened to me with the Bennetts insurance Breakdown cover,,, bloody big con,, im with Carole Nash now and saved nearly half of my premium,, and full recovery 🖐, we had lots of electric faults with our RT's and my gs,, so think you were lucky with yours and bloody lucky not to have been injured or worse!!,,, BMW salesmen should be wearing balaclavas and have two pistols down the front of there draws !!!, keep it twisted brother 👊
Thanks for adding your story for people to see Rob appreciate you taking the time mate. ride safe fella.
ABS is the biggest con ever inflicted on the motoring public ever...Its just a way of manufactures to get easy safety stars and never work properly in emergency situations.... it's been my experience that when you jump on the brakes hard thay lock up just like the old cars.. I'd never have it on my bike.. good luck with the new one .😎🇬🇧
Cheers Brad and I think you have something there about ABS a lot of comments have mentioned just taking the ABS off the bike.
And the good news is..... Rear shocks on both your model and GS's are failing left right and centre.. Which BMW refuse to acknowledge !!! ( sorry :-( )
Thanks John
I don’t often swear on replies but fuck me steve 2k 😲😲😲😲 BMW’s are amazing but like Ducati’s they are so expensive on parts. Fingers crossed it was a one off on the old one👍
New one has been brilliant so far Si fingers crossed eh lol
Nope, I got recovered through our Bank AA . The not so recently fitted new clutch had spun loose- not within a mobile mechanics universe really. But I got home with the bike on it. Then fixed the clutch myself. Funny but the old singles suffered from insufficiently tightened crank and clutch nuts and tab washers.
Thanks John a lot off people have mentioned recovery by added extra from a bank.
Just checked my Bennets policy and right enough 10 miles!!!!
Pleased you checked Andrew didn't want others to have to pay daft money like I had to. Cheaper to buy a little extra cover and have piece of mind. Ride Safe mate
Sounds like the brake servo went on the linked brakes. A common enough problem on this model. So unless your brake fluid had drained out, all the lines are still there, just like in a car with the engine off, you have to provide much higher pressure on the pedal and handle to get the brake to work. But they will still work. Once you get used to those servo assisted brakes, it's very daunting when it fails and you have to apply much much more pressure.
Thanks for the info my friend.
@@Steve-Clark I have a 2006 R1200RT with newly replaced servo ;-)
In red as well. Shame they stopped that colour after 2006
@@geordnz hope it didn't cost as much as I was quoted my friend
I am still in shock, you were very lucky to escape, the brake failure, without damage to yourself. The failure of such a part, on a BMW or any other bike.
A recall and replacement, at the manufacturer
cost, would be as a matter of course..Another BMW would not have been my choice after your experience..
.
Wow, that does it for me. I was thinking of getting another older model BMW (K1200LT or RS) and they have ABS.... Since the 2003 to 2007 model BMWs have that brake problem, I will not buy a BMW... In fact, since BMW has not stepped up and retrofitted all the old bikes with a newer design ABS pump, I am going to have to stick with a Honda.... Let's see.... ABS pumps, rear main seal problems and clutch slave cylinder problems which lead to clutch failure, final drive failures.... Nope, don't need a BMW (Bring More Wallet) bike...
Pleased to be of help mate.
Bit of a tip Steve is tape a spare battery for your fob to underneath the cubby lid, nothing worse than when the battery dies and you cant find the BMW sweetspot behind the dash,,,(Trust me I know) ,Enjoy the new nice bike pal and get some vids up 👍🏍🏍
Thanks Rick I have a spare battery taped to my top box but cubby lid better as don't always have box on. Ride Safe mate.
There is nothing wrong with old motorcycle’s, you sound as tho your an experienced rider, you should have some experience in respect of repairing motorcycle’s, I’m 72 years of age, and would tackle any aspect of a problem, it’s only what I’ve taught myself over the years, some dealers would tell you anything for a new sale, not worth repairing ! Come on, get real !
I'd just lost confidence in the old one Cliff
Lucky the roads were clear up in't thills with no brakes good bit of calm riding. New bike looks good, parts and service prices are ridiculous from most big manufacturers, enjoy stay safe 🏍👍
Thanks Andrew appreciate that my friend.
Thanks for the heads up, im with Carolenash but will check. Also well done with keeping the old BMW upright. A less experienced rider would have been in serious trouble.!
Yeah one scary moment that one Tim 😲
Had a similar think happened to me on the NC 500 tour. My key snapped in the ignition of my vfr 800 and i had the top recovery from the rac was also insured with Bennetts. Because i still had the key they and it wasn't lost they said it wasn't a break down. But if i wanted to be recovered it would of costs me £1900 to get me home i was on the isle of skye on a Sunday. Luckily enough one of the lad's that i was with had a similar problem with he's key on a different honda and managed to get it to start so finished the tour by undoing the battery every night. So obviously I'll never have anything to do with Bennetts and rac ever again. Love the new bike by the way enjoy
Holy smoke Rick £1900 what a rip off, pleased you got away with it mate. These insurance companies are quick to take your money tho eh.
coming down a hill without brakes . . . . . i'm just happy you were on a twin with so much engine braking! Also, it's not naïve to assume that your breakdown would get you home, just trusting,
Was a scary situation my friend and agree it is just trusting your insurance company but will never do that again. Ride Safe fella.
Things a biker does to get a free brew....fook me you did well, not just stopping, but advances footwork as well.
Suppose things happen, just happens you have a lovely new bike, have a great time on it.
Thanks John appreciate that my friend.
Wow Steve I was thinking you had run off the face of the earth as I hadn't seen any blogs for a while . Now that's a fine looking machine and I know you will have many trips to look forward to on it . Saying that it will be soon time to put it away for a few months with winter coming upon you over there . I was talking to my cousin in Hagworthingham and they had a dusting of snow today so don't head up there for your coffee break . With that I will say goodnight as it's bedtime for me now , take care stay safe and healthy . Mal,in Australia
Hi Mal we also had snow today and the rides are becoming less and frequent all the time now as winter approaches which I believe means summer for you lucky people. Stay safe my friend.
A couple of years ago I used a 2005 RT to ride to work every day 136 km roundtrip. I always used to buy older bikes to do this as I also ride in the winter to work. I had the same problem. My brakes didn't fail luckily but the ABS pump was gone. I also found the price to be absurd. Even aftermarket pumps were ridiculously expensive. So I indeed also traded it for an other bike. The problems seems to be the maintenance. If the brake fluid doesn't get flushed annually this is bound to happen. The previous owners must have neglected that.. Anyway glad you didn't crash!
Cheers fella since releasing this video the amount of people telling me of their problems has amazed me even more. ride safe my friend.
Had the servo fail on my R1150RT whilst riding down a ramp to an underground carpark at the hotel I was staying at. My fault as I stalled the engine because the bike was in the wrong gear. I had no idea I would loose the brake assistance when the engine stopped so proceeded to race down the ramp towards a 90' turn whilst frantically pressing the engine start button with the clutch in praying it would start before I met the wall at the bottom. Survived that one and now am also the owner of a R1200RT LE and continue to be astonished at the price of parts BMW charge. £600 for a sat nav to fit the cradle, £1150 for the topbox with stop light and painted to match the bike colour.
Wow that was scary to and yeah great bikes but parts are an absolute joke price wise, we must be mad LOL
Blimey ! what a story, but the old bike looks immaculate, did you get a decent P/X for it and take into consideration it needed a pricey repair, have been caught out with that 10 mile breakdown, but now have full cover with the AA for relay included, new bike looks brilliant, how high is the seat ?
Hi David Pidcocks gave me 3400 which was a lot more than I expected but it wont cost them 2000 to fix will it LOL and its the standard height seat.
I got stung too by my insurance company (MCE) the day after I bought my bike. Was about 60 miles away from home just outside Matlock when I got a puncture and also ran out of CO2 so couldn't pump the tire back up. Insurance said £270 to get the bike home as it takes 10 days for the breakdown cover to kick in on my policy. Next day I made a complaint and then cancelled my insurance with MCE and went with another company. I now pay £45/year for a separate breakdown cover which is far better, no distance limit from home, no extra cost. Rip off Britain again. Makes you sick insurance and how the whole thing is just a money stream for the bankers. FastyRides
Totally agree with all you say fella a massive scam, I to have seperate cover now for piece of mind. Ride Safe my friend
@@Steve-Clark You too brother.
Nice replacement, shame the other had to go but I would do the same. I would love another boxer but the Yamaha Tracer 700 will have to do for now. Glad to have you back Steve.
Thanks John and ride safe mate.
That’s a coincidence. I popped into Pidcocks last Thursday .
I live in Derby, you sound more N Derbyshire / Notts
Can't recommend Pidcocks highly enough Beverley. They were great to deal and couldn't do enough and it's Lincolnshire I live, as before ride safe lady.
It's the same as anything that comes fitted with the BMW logo, extortionate pricing. . . Costs of OE spares is ridiculous. . . This alone is enough to keep me away from them.
.
Down hill brake failure on a bike 😳 talk about worst case scenario the thing of nightmares, glad you are ok and in one piece 👍 not gonna ask about what state your underwear was in after that lol 😂
Congratulations on the new bike have many fantastic miles and gathering new and great memories on it 🏍
Cheers fella was not one of my best days lol
Guessing it was an electrical problem, BMW I think are the number one or two most unreliable motorcycle. But the question is why the hell would you buy another one!!!
.
Glad you got it stopped, could have been nasty.
BMW had a similar problem on earlier bikes, not good for such a premium bike manufacturer. Friend of mine had the same happen and he too sold it for a Yamaha, no trust.
I had a bad experience with Bennetts to which I now avoid, insured through IAM Roadsmart and sort my recovery out separately so I cover all vehicles and know what I'm getting.
BMW should've had a recall on that fault in my book, not good.
Stay safe and Keep it Upright!
Thanks for the comments fella and I too will be changing from Bennetts when policy expires.
I knew it'd be the abs pump/module soon as you said there was a problem, same happened to TMF, poor do eh !
Not good at all my friend.
If I had a quid for every used Beemer advert that I'd seen that included the words: 'Abs professionally removed' I'd be a rich man. In fact, that was one of the reasons I went for the FJR. Atb Steve. 👍
Yes I am now hearing that a lot Russell ride safe friend.
@@Steve-Clark Cheers. You too, Buddy.
I've been on every forum that I am a member and inform everyone because everyone thinks they are covered and your not. Thanks for highlighting this because I even got some abuse of certain members also stating I was wrong...
Thanks for spreading the word Ray appreciate that. I'm afraid as like myself you don't realise you don't get recovery all the way home UNTIL you actually need to be, ride safe my friend.
RAC absolutely rubbish I'd seen two lady's on the side of a very busy road waited for 4hrrs in the cold with no indication when the RAC were coming out
Yes George recovery companies are fast to take your money but when needed Grrrr
Doesn’t come up to DOT standards for two independent brake circuits. These big manufacturers get away with it.
Was a bad day mate.
That's a scary failure to deal with! Well handled. I wonder if you do a rolling brake test at the start of each ride.
It's not just an ABS pump, sir. *Husky voice* It's a BMW ABS pump...
Nice new bike 👌
Cheers
I was hoping that you would do something dramatic like trade it in for a Honda Monkey 125cc and tell us that large motorbikes are a waste of money.
Ha ha cheers John
I’m glad you’re safe but with all due respect vehicles tend to have a life expectancy of 10 yrs. Anything after that even with the best of care is a crap shoot.
Damn only got 7 years left with the new one then LOL ride safe mate.
Stunned that those bikes weren't recalled. How they could be allowed on the roads like that is beyond me!
Yeah criminal ain't it.
Glad you're all sorted. I feel the same about my VFR1200, built for me, short legs (lol).
Ha ha cheers fella
Bit scary mate brakes failing nice new bike hope you enjoy it, still got the st 1300 still in good condition for year keep safe mate cu in next video the fev rider
Cheers Peter I loved my Pan European they are a great bike. Ride Safe my friend.
Every bit of your misfortune comes down to one thing. The greed for money by the
breakdown cover to the purchases of a new bike. But hey ho you now have a new bike that you trust and are comfortable with. Enjoy and be safe.
thanks Stephen
I'm only surprised you bought another BMW. I had a similar experience with a Bentley once. Never again. Bought a Rolls Royce this time. You should have done likewise and got a GoldWing....
Possibly Bib but I do love the RTs and wow enjoy the Roller.
So, are you now lumbered with your old bike, as I presume it will never sell without brakes , unless you practically give it away.
Derek I got a great deal px on the new bike they gave me £3400.
Thank for that information about the RAC Steve will be checking mine now 👍👍👍
No worries Peter the exact reason I did the video my friend, hope yours is all good 👍
Should have kept the pan,Steve.
Ha ha your Geraldine lol
So sorry to hear about your scare but delighted to see you treated yourself to the new bike.
We now have exactly the same model.
A quick tip is to keep the revs up. Despite having bucket loads of torque from tick over upwards it does like to be ridden like a 2 stroke.
You might want to think about a bigger screen than the standard sport screen. I'm a bit taller than you but a bigger screen has taken away wind noise and buffeting. Having an electrically adjustable screen is brilliant because you can raise it when getting a move on and lower it in towns or on hot days at will.
Happy riding. A great choice of bike, are you wondering why you hadn't done it before yet?
Thanks for all the tips my friend will look into a larger screen to. Ride safe my friend.
BMW stands for Better have Massive Wallet as they very expensive to buy and run sorry but give me a Honda or Suzuki anyday
Each to their own George but know what your saying.
Nice new bike Steve, dodged a bullet with the old bike's brakes, they could have gone in a far worse position.
They certainly could have my friend.
If I'd been burned by a brand in the same way I don't think I would have bought the same brand again, I'd like a BM at some point but the bill you were given for replacement of the abs was more than I paid for my current bike 😀
yeah total rip off mate.
Bloody hell, I never knew ABS failure could mean no brakes, I thought it just meant no ABS no problem, that must have been a panicky moment. Totally agree re the insurance I have mine with Bennett’s, but they mentioned when they called to discuss the policy features about the 10 miles in the breakdown cover and they upgraded it. The R1200RT is a beautiful bike, I’ll be honest I’ll always ride a Honda, but I do love the BMW boxer engine, or what ever they call that particular flat twin… for now, being the little fella that I am ill power on with my NT650 😊. Keep up the good vids mate, those of us that struggle for time a little can enjoy the ride outs of others, and yours I definitely look forward to. 👍
Thanks for taking the time to comment fella and am pleased to hear you upgraded your insurance as so many of us get taken in thinking we are covered for breakdown but don't realise only partially. One of the main reasons for the vid was to highlight this.
Nice choice with the Honda my friend I love Honda's and as you may have seen in previous vids had the pleasure of riding a Honda Pan European for many a year. Ride Safe fella and thanks for watching.
It does, BUT ONLY on these BMWs fitted with the “servo brakes”. I remember when they came out; reviewer’s were complaining about how sharp the servo brakes were. When the servo motor fails you lose 95% of braking force. So you need forearms like pop eye to get the bike to slow down. It blows my mind why ANY engineer would design a critical safety system with a “fail dangerous “ design. Only BMW.
@@jimwyer4257 it’s just mental isn’t it.
Congrats and best of luck with the new bike 🥂😎🏍💨💨💨💨💨💨💨👍🏻🇨🇦
Cheers John appreciate that
Had the same problem with my 2007 gsa. I went to a company in Holland that installs revised pumps. Costed me about 700 euro installed.
Should be free really my friend.
Which company? I'm in NL and bringing my 2001 K1200LT out of hibernation so I wouldn't be surprised if the brake servo has some issues?
@@tg4230 it’s called reco motor service near Breda. Very satisfied with their service!
@@Lecruque Thanks!
@@Steve-Clark well I agree it’s a weak point, but the bike was 10 years old, and brakes did still function, just no abs.
