ASICS NOVABLAST 4 INITIAL REVIEW - BEST NEW DAILY SHOE IN 2023? or MAX CUSHION MADNESS? - EDDBUD
An initial review of alien like ASICS NOVABLAST 4. I was lucky enough to receive these from ASICS for review but they are not paying me to make this video, nor will they vet my views before my valued viewers.
A full refresh for this shoe with a brand new upper design and materials, a 4mm increase in stack from front to back and a new outsole setup too.
Is it a case of "no match for a good novablaster at your side" or a max midsole mess up?

Bought the my first superblast(beige) the other day, used it today for my half marathon out of the box, It felt great! And going by your review, i guess i have to try the 4th too!
I remember walking 10 miles in that shoe one Saturday round London. Then ran a 10k pb the next day in the asics 10k event. The Superblast is superb.
Yoda: That's my lightsaber green they are using on that Novablast 4! Not too sure about the excess foam on the back of the heel section. Reminds me of the latest Ultraboosts. Thanks for the review Edd!
Actually no you say it. Not massively different to the UB 22.
I liked V2 and V3. It seems like it's still a great value for what you get.

Just picked up a pair of Gel Nimbus 3 lite for £75 in the black Friday Sale, i normally run outside in Kayano but thought i will try the Nimbus for the treadmill!

I own the NovaBlast 3 and love them, so it’ll be interesting to see how you get on with these long term.
Quite the different shoe. Bit more weight and the extra cushion won’t be for everyone.

I hope they haven't tweaked all the fun out from the Novablast 3. But at this price point and with the widely positive reviews it feels like a no brainer.
Yeah it’s still a good shoe. It’s a better one than the v3.
Just bought a replacement V3 for ~$75 USD. V4 can wait… 😅
Loved the lightness, fit and bounce of the NB1s, have 4 pairs, the first two are quite done at 800-900k the rest is following.
Have one pair NB3 and even though it feels a little faster it also feels too heavy, except for winter too warm, and I had several different chafing
/ hot spot & blister problems (which now are under control but still!)and already after 120ks the material of both ankle areas begin to open up / break down.
The NB4 don’t seem to be the answer!
It’s more a Superblast trainer now
+1 for NB1. Wish I could still buy them. I’ve moved on from Novablast to New Balance SC trainer v2.

I tried on the first 2 iterations and took them off immediately. They felt absurdly bottom- and back-heavy and clunky to me. I finally liked v.3 but by the time I was running through my 2nd pair I realized some niggles I’d been struggling with off and on for a while were either caused by or exacerbated by that shoe so I retired it early. To replace it I went to my running store to try on the new NB 1080 and shocked myself by buying the Brooks Ghost Max instead. It feels so much more nimble and smooth to me. Maybe not a “super critical” very exciting midsole but great roll geometry that works for me.
Yeah the ghost max and Hyperion max are standouts right now
I have a bit of a wide foot. Sucks that so many complained about the roomy toe box, probably why they went more narrow

Loved the NB2 and put 600 miles in them. I did not care for the NB3. This is due to: The shoes being long in the toe, felt clunky, smooth outsole, and left heel got a big hole on the inside where my ankle is at (also, didn't like the smooth material around the ankle, hurt the ankle lock down for me). I'll skip the NB4 because I've found over the years, I want a more nimble shoe. I currently have 400 miles in the Noosa Tri 14 and think they are great for 6-10 mile runs!

I tend to air toward the lighter slightly less stacked shoes. Not sure a bean pole like me needs all that stack
I am seriously considering this one if only they come up with more colorways. That grinch color is just off putting for me

I have no problem paying the extra for the Superblast.... but they seem unavailable anywhere in my size.... So I guess I'm going Novablast 4 (and I guess a fair few others will do the same with the Superblast being so hard to get hold of, but reviewers saying they're so similar).
I'm gonna wait for the Superblast to come down in price and not bother with these. I have the Nimbus 25's.great vlog Ed ❤️✌️🏴

That is a GREAT looking shoe! But I have a medium to slightly wide forefoot... so it might not work for me.😢
Certainly feels a bit more cramped there. Odd that it does considering the wider forefoot base.
I found the NB3 quite slow. It locked me into 6min/k and was a struggle to get faster. I prefer the cushioned guidesole asics stuff for my easy runs as i was able to cruise slightly faster with less effort and heart rate.
These NovaBlast 4s look way more like the Gel Nimbus 25 than the Novablast 3s. I’m a tall, slightly overweight guy which (I believe) lead to the NB3s bottoming out and feeling kind of flat/slow underfoot during runs but I *love* the Gel Nimbus 25s. Since the Nimbus 26 prototype looks like a complete shift in direction I’m curious how these compare to the Gel Nimbus 25s. Is the similarity just aesthetic?
Well, I write this comment and then almost the next day the embargo on the Nimbus 26 lifts and it doesn’t look to be quite as drastic a departure as the ‘leak’ I’d seen online. This NB4 still looks awfully similar in shape and material to the GN25 though and I’m still curious how they compare, since they used to be two pretty different shoes.
Thanks for another great review. Was curious how the "rocker" felt compared to the superblast. Love my superblast - did most of my long runs in them in my last marathon block. I did find you had to work a bit more to get a turn over given the minimal rocker - maybe the NB 3 was a bit more rockered? Thanks!
Is the Superblast so good that its worth paying more for than just buying the Novablast?

Compared tp the NB3- Very different shoe in my opinion. The superblast feels wider, more stable , lighter and the foam / misdole feels very different than the novablast. The NB feels softer, bit " mushy" under the forefoot ( and yet still somewhat-bouncy) - kinda reminds me of the mach 5 under the forefoot. The SB is all bouncy light " hollow" feeling foam - no mush there at all - no bottoming out. ( note: I have the TR version of the NB)
Hints of the Superblast here. But nothing is quite like that one
Asics has become tops imo. They've come a long way from the $35 shoes/corn causing slabs of rubber I'd buy from Kohl's.

I'm disappointed that ASICS seems to have abandoned the GlideRide, love the 3s but my pair are nearing the end of their life. Do fancy these though, love the colour!

What’s the grip like compared to the Superblast? That’s literally the only drawback of the SB - it’s slippy on wet ground. Love that green colourway
Bit improved on the SB but not perfect.
Had NB3 and didn’t enjoy them too much. The upper was nice and soft in touch but after several miles found holes in the hill counter. Also didn’t enjoy the midsole, it was too firm to me, not sure how better NB4 is but Im not going to risk :)

I was a fan of the NovaBlast until I tried the SUPERBLAST! I loved it immediately! I worried they would change it so I bought a few more pair!That shoe really got my attention and actually changed the way I think about running shoes. Quite the lighter shoe of the two is the nova.

Ed, other reviews have stated the stack height is the same but ASICS have changed how they report stack height in line with other brands?
I’m giving you the actual stack of my shoe. My size is typically 4mm higher than the sample which is what I have here.

Yes, the review I've been waiting for! How's the length? Normally a 11 but I had to go down half a size to 10.5 in the v3 as it was sooo long.
I tried a 10.5 in the Nb2. But went back to an 11 in the 3. This one is kinda the same but perhaps a little less width.
They say, they couldn`t make it better then the Novablast 3 because no one would buy the Superblast then 😁

How would you compare them to the new Boston 12? Got a pair of them in a black friday sale, but I'm out of town and haven't tried them on yet and won't hold them in hand for another week.
Yoe gave the Boston an overall score of 11.1 ( Value 2.8 ), my value would be 3.0 because of big black friday discount, but value aside how do the upper, midsole and outsole compare
Weight wise it’s very close. The Boston is that bit more “up for it” if that makes sense.

Loved the v1
The v2/v3 very very average daily running shoes,overhyped beyond belief.
Not sure overhyped from my perspective.
I also loved my OG v1. Although they are effectively retired now every now and then I pull them out and they still give me that bounce and the outsole is still holding out at around 500 miles. One of the most durable shoes I have ever owned.
I’ve owned every version of the Novablast. I’m a mid-forefoot striker. The trampoline forefoot outsole area wore out REALLY BAD really fast in v3. If ASICS reduced the outsole rubber in the forefoot, v4 is going to wear out even quicker for a forefoot striker.
I’ve given up on Novablast. V1 was the best version.
I do mentioned it’s the same depth to the rubber here.
@@EDDBUD at 01:56 you mentioned slightly less in the forefoot - I misunderstood. You were referring to less width. That could actually help with endurance of the trampoline area by not being as spread out.
The thicker outsole of the TR version might help?
@@marcoc2706 not “thicker.” The forefoot is thinner, less spread out, which means it is not as wide. Less wide means less flex in the center where the shoe wears out. Less width should endure longer.

Nice video! I am a heel striker and can't decide between Novablast 4 and Brooks Glycerin 20. What would you recommend?
The brooks may give you more of a consistent landing
@@EDDBUD I appreciate the feedback. I tried both of them. Glycerin 20 has a firm yet cushion ride while NB4 has more of rocker feel. I am a light guy, so leaning towards NB4 since it is a bit more versatile in terms of runs and felt lighter when I picked up the pace. Again, I am just a newbie.
