I replaced the 101 with a 01a. I think they did a great job replicating it. Also, you'll need to maintain the old one due to its age. I'd go for the 01a.
@@trashkassett Thanks for the reply! You've won me over to the 01a lol. I just saw so many people saying the 01a sounded like a 101 plug-in in a cheap case and I was quite discouraged but to hear it's at least comparable from someone who actually owned a 101 helps a lot, thank you!
@@cameron_coleburg8326 I don't own an original SH-101, but I just picked up the 01a and I just absolutely love it. It sounds thick, responsive, the filter is very resonant. Plus it gains 4x polyphony (or optional unison) over the original, plus MIDI over USB.
I've spent so much time with the 101 vst...really something special to hear you physically switching and dialing everything in... Maybe one day I'll own one but until that day it lives inside my computer! Great recreation, spot on!!!
funny thing. Seems like all people who are into such complex music are IT guys. Look at his desktop: virtualbox, dosbox, unity, sip, some db client etc etc
Goes the other way as well. I'm not even close to being an IT guy and this is definitely my type of music. I mean honestly I am a synth player but that and my phone are the only 2 pieces of tech I'm decent with lol
Samrat B i don't think such a thing as a modern sh-101 exists, but if i was going to drop what the sh-101 sells for online on a synth i'd probably get a moog sub 37 or a sub phatty.
omg without knowing anything about this video, the first song I thought of was Theme From Ernest Borgnine and when the video started that's what was used
You and someone else mentioned more resonance but I think what’s missing is more filter envelope, which would end up accentuating the resonance. I just don’t know if having only one ADSR would be a limiting factor.
@@trashkassett Where does the audio signal from the synthesizer go to? Is it connected to a DAW that lets you add the reverb? I am very new to hardware synthesizers.
@@nervousneighbour yes, looks that way. Inbetween synth and laptop that you have daw on, normally an audio interface. Eg Focusrite Solo or something else.
Is that true, or is it based on that other video on youtube? I've not known Tom to use an MC-202 on any of his tracks or seen pics, neither statements rule it out but he does have an SH-101 from this period. You'd think if he wrote it on the 202 it would be full of interesting accents.
I am so grateful that you showed us all how to used to sequencer like this. Wow:)
When you brought up that reverb, I think I came in my pants, I'll let you know when I returned to my body because this is out of this world
Tmi
This is just beautiful! SH-101 just looks and sounds so freaking amazing! Well Done! :)
So good! Probably my favorite track from Squarepusher
This is really amazing, I'm still trying to decide on either the SH-101 or the SH-01a. Great job on the sequence, the sweeping and all was on point.

Get the Roland SH01A. I replaced my 101 with that
@@trashkassett big ups, seems more affordable as well as easier to maintain I imagine thanks 👍

TRUE && makes_sence. Music like this is technical and fits well with being a software developer.
@@trashkassett Same :) i'm QA tester myself but moving forward into automation. I make breakcore like venetian snares.

why don't you raise the resonance more ? but ... I love it!
This is what I want to do
yes!!!
Matt Ludlam do it!
SH 1o1 is gold ...
rubbish toy synth
For ppl with no skills it is rubbish.. yes
Samrat B great synth, but sincerely not worth what they sell for these days.
what would you suggest as a new sh101 replacement?

101 and a TI2, you sir have good taste in synths

As you programmed it I thought you had memorized the sequence. Heh. Sounds great, thanks for sharing.
i think the sequence is listed on the screen under the video window. ;)
aha! so this is also how BoC made all those ditties, with the sequencer, nice!
Most probably
Excellent.
Very nicely done! Sounds great
I do this every day.. I't so wonderful to live in Finland and produce music .. 420 of c ...
How do I get that Mephisto “Mystery Of Love” sound?
Beautiful 🙏
Ceephax?
The melody is so good and you did an amazing job recreating it. How did you add the reverb? Were you using a daw?
Thanks. Just added a standard reverb. Most reverbs sounds nice with this synth or riff. Check out the SH01

More reverb please
Like an unholy amount :)
super cool, just need a little bit reverb
Incredible!!
nailed it!
Great job
Do you have an image of the patch by chance? Thanks!
try looking at the patch from this other video instagram.com/p/BZPSQxKhOa-/
EXCELLENT SUPER COOL
Wow. So you have the synth going to a saw then what reverb?
Levi Jesse can’t see it clearly, but it looks like he might be using a Melda reverb
well done!
This is so damn cool
how do people figure out this shit? insane
trial and error + experience
@@trashkassett man, this video makes me want to get into synthesizers:D seems fun as hell
That's great!
TREMENDOUS
Original sounds a bit more acid
Yep. May need some distortion and fine-tuning finding that sweet spot
@@trashkassett Nope, just slides/hold are missing
gorgeous
holy shit awesome
Nice
nice
original is from mc202 lol
Alexander Abdulov same sound engine in 101 and 202
Now I know, boi. I own SH-101. By the way, which Squarepusher's 101 tracks do you know?
..original setup was Fostex M80, Soundcraft 12/2, Boss DR 660, Akai S 950, Roland SH 101, 303, 606, 707
lol
