- Train So Fast That The Bridge Bounces! 1st Train Was Flying! 2 Trains Speed Over Railroad Bridge, Speed Checked By Radar On Train With Union Pacific Railroad Locomotives & 2 More Fast Trains On Norfolk Southern New Castle Sub. These trains are in Somerville and New Miami, Ohio. This is between Hamilton and Camden, Ohio. Train horn salute came from the 2nd train which was heading to Gest Street Yard in Cincinnati, Ohio.
1st Train was going so fast that the bridge was bouncing up and down under it! I admit that I did not notice that until the video was up a couple of hours and comments kept pouring in about it. I don't know how I missed that when I was there but I was just focused on a good shot.
This is my first time to film trains in Somerville at the Somerville Community Church graveyard. The second train took several hours to get here due to an emergency stop near Camden. I heard it on 160.440 and when the conductor told the dispatcher that he had to walk the whole train I knew it was going to take a while but it took a lot longer than I thought it would.
After that I decided to leave and I got just a few miles up the track and noticed a train waiting in a siding for that train to pass. I went back to an interesting crossing and filmed it by the corn fields. Then I left again and when I got to New Miami I noticed a train coming off the CSX line and headed straight for me. I pulled over where an old trailer park had just been removed and filmed it. All together this video has 4 trains. Sup

The center bridge support, constructed of I-Beams, is acting as a fulcrum and allowing the bridge ends to move up and down. The concrete bridge abutments have settled by a few inches but the steel center support has not settled, resulting in the bridge's weight being transferred from one end to the other as a train moves over it. This could be remedied by inserting steel shims under the bridge beams where they rest on the concrete abutments.
Those "I-beams" are actually H-beams and in this application are referred to as "steel pilings." The longitudinal girders resting on the pier and the abutments are actual I-beams.
It will be fine..
@@ckuehncnwhsyt Charles what do you think about all that movement? I'm in my 60s and I've never seen ANY bridge move that much.
@@rael5469
Without being there to see it, I can't comment. From the video, I didn't see anything all that alarming. I'm sure the railroad's maintenance of way department is aware of it, is monitoring it and will do whatever is necessary if they feel it becomes a threat to operations or safety.
@@ckuehncnwhsyt The term WF (wide flange) beams has been used to designate all major beams since I entered the field in 1976, noted on drawings as "W". I've drawn thousands of them and are still designated as W. As you pointed out, H shapes are used as piles because of their square section. When I entered structural design, the AISC was already phasing out the "I" designation. I think it was replaced by the "S", but not sure as I've never used it. We had W, HP, S, M, C, WT, ST, MT, and TS along with the minor shapes. TS (tube steel) has been changed to HSS.
Lots of comments about the bridge "should" be reported, with no follow up if anyone actually did. So I contacted NS and forwarded the video to them. I know nothing about bridge stability and design, but I have never seen a bridge bounce like this. So if anyone actually did get an answer as to if this is the norm, let us all know. The train was moving, and so was the bridge. Great video! I was backing up watching it! 🙂
It’s a derailment waiting to happen. Did NS actually respond back?
@@clee47ford Not as of yet.
It took a few days, but Norfolk Southern reviewed JT's video and said they were sending a team to look at the bridge. It would be interesting to see what the follow up is (if anyone's close.)
@@clee47ford That's not a derailment waiting to happen. How did you come up with that? Yes, it needs a little attention but it isn't anything that would cause a derailment. What is your track or bridge experience? There's nothing worse than someone saying something about things they know nothing about.
@@coldblue9mm I've seen quite a few derailments, and I've got a hell of a lot of experience with structural steel and failure analysis. Ever heard of material fatigue? Are you assuming this has reached a static degradation point, and will not worsen? The only thing holding this span in place seems to be the rails themselves, and the center span, which can act not only as a fulcrum, as demonstrated in this video, but also as a pivot point, as the ends of the span do not appear to be mechanically connected to anything. To me, that's the definition of an accident waiting to happen.
Retired from a railway career which included civil engineering, that bridge needs attention sooner rather than later (bearings at either require packing as a minimum). From watching the first video I probably wouldn't be standing that close! 🤨 Thank you for another excellent video! 🙂
I agree, I'd be nervous as hell being that close. Never know how loose those spikes are holding the track.
It's not the bearings duffass , it's the bridge muffler that's worn out, that also why it's so noisy, duh!
So what was your actual position on said railroad? I don't think it was the Bridge & Building Dept. or Track. Now I'm curious.
What bearings
@@TheMainLead SWOOSH........that's the sound you hear going over the top of your head
You gotta show this video to the RR. That bridge is ready to jump into ravine.
That bridge was ROCKIN'! If I was a bridge inspector, i might have an issue with that... 😱
I saw that too. Good location, should be named Rocking Bridge!
Stand on an interstate hwy bridge when trucks pass over it an feel how much they move!
Wow, I did not even notice that until now! I was just focused on getting a good video of the train crossing it. I saw all the comments coming in about it bouncing after the video was up a couple of hours so I changed the title. I have never seen that before. Thanks for noticing!
@@calgale8467 Rocking Bridge, Ohio! Lolz
@@ctprecast7437 I was on a road and rail bridge in West Virginia when a coal train came to a stop on it and it shook the whole bridge
Look how much that bridge flex as the train is crossing it, wow.
You bet! That thing is teeter-tottering on the center support. It was jumping, tracks and all... That can't be good. Why don't they remedy that?
@@johnbroughton3401 Bc upper management wants to save money for themselves and shareholders rather than invest those “record profits” into their infrastructure.
@@anscrailfanner6812 Sounds like typical American corporate greed. They give capitalism a bad name. It's a similar mentality to that of the slumlord.
@@johnbroughton3401 maybe no one has reported it...👍👍
That bridge wasn’t flexing it was playing teeter/totter!!
The bridge main beam is teeter tottering on the middle support! Looks like the engineers need to put some spacer plates under both ends and weld them into place. Excellent catch jawtooth!
Great video from start to finish! Cool showing the old bridge supports too. Thanks JT! 👍👍💪
Glad you enjoyed it
Great bridge great location great video thanks Jaw tooth
Thanks 👍
What's awesome is watching that bridge rock and roll. 😊
Rock on!
The bridge didn’t seem to move as much when the second train passed over it. I know nothing of train bridges to know if that movement is an issue. I would have called it in simp,y because I don’t know, however, I would have kept distance because just seeing it made me nervous! Great catches this video. Thanks, Jaw Tooth.
I hope they get around to looking at that bridge soon. It looks like the gravel behind the cement support on the one side has washed out causing the tie to sink. Could be trouble especially with those speeds😮
We need to get you a good vest with big pockets so you can carry all your extras... lol
The train speeded up a bit.
That bridge was teeter tottering in the middle!!!
Crazy watching the bridge. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching Rick!
That bridge gives new meaning to the old adage Rockin' and Rollin' don't it Son ... Chessie System's reading the latest copy of Train's 😂🤣😂 Thx for posting ...
🤭😁😄
That was a good horn salute. That was some good spots for filming. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you too!
The end of that bridge sure was bopping up and down when the first train passed over it. That bridge is old, but the one that it replaced was ancient!
I didn't notice it moving but since a lot of ppl noticed that I might have to change the title . lol
@@JawTooth go back and look. It looked like the end of the bridge was mounted on a pogo stick! LOL.
@@danielulz1640 Yes, that was odd looking. I changed the title for that. I have never noticed a bridge do that before. It sure was moving !
@@JawTooth somethin tells me that ain't quite right!
MOW may not know that. Rail traffic is supposed to not be in the area of a crew, and a hi-rail truck might not be heavy enough to see it, IF there was someone trackside to observe.
WHOA.....that bridge is NOT supposed to move that much. It could shift along the center support and derail a train. Might be worth a call to the railroad.
I agree! That little bridge could be a big problem someday.
Pffft
The bridge is fine.
The railroad people are busy enough without wierdos like you ringing up complaining about a perfectly good bridge that you have no clue about.
itd be funny tho if it derails, then trains will be going through the forest

The pipes may be the span of wings on snow plow.
They seem to warn anyone that the rr bed ends. I grew up with a 1 track service line 100 yards from me. The rr line was my playground.
wow those rails were moveing up and down a lot/that bridge will wear out faster
That bridge reminds me of my uncles dairy farm when I was a kid in the Snowy Mountains, Australia.
We were sitting on the bridge fishing. We hear Uncle Clarry yell "bullchase" to the dogs, and look up and see the huge bull roaring down from the top paddock, and he wants to cross the bridge to get to the cows in the top paddock on the other side.
We jump in the creek, the bull hits the bridge full speed with a cattle dog swinging on it's tail, and the old wooden bridge starts bouncing like a trampoline.
One of the most amazing things I've seen to this day. Glad I was sitting in the creek with the trout that I didn't catch.
The bridge was certainly moving as the train went over quite a deflection
Great good video, mr Jaw Tooth.
The people in Ohio know you they passing a railroadcrossing and see: hey there stay mr JT.
But make more of these video's 👌 maestro.
See the soft sunlight on the trains. Very good done mister JT.👍☀️.
Greet from Zandvoort the Netherlands.🇾🇪🇺🇸
You got that right!
Nice outing with some good trains. Thanks Brian.
Thanks for watching
Great 👍 videos today JT ! You got a horn salute from my favorite UP line with a neat NF dpi going over a neat little bridge in Ohio that was awesome ! 👍😎🤩👨✈️🌞👍🤠🎩
That was fantastic! Old bridges are just cool.
Had to repair a similar situation on a bridge located on I-75 North of Atlanta.
Had to jack it almost 4” while under traffic to replace bearings and plates.
These videos are absolutely amazing.
Thanks again Jawtooth.
WOW! That bridge was really rocking and I mean literally! Gee whiz!
Thanks for watching !
Did like the 'No Left Turn' lamp at the level crossing - another gem - thank you!
Excellent find! The railroad needs to get on repairing and strengthening that bridge soon bc I imagine it is not supposed to flex that much.
The other night out in Nebraska along, nephew and I we're hauling cattle and got running with this 1 train and we we're running about 74mph. Pretty awesome running next to a train trucking down the tracks.
Wow 👌 👏 nice 2 start the week with great trains 🚆 👍 got a horn salute
Thanks for watching
@@JawTooth your welcome 🙏
Great video, picture quality is amazing ! That bridge is really rocking !!
Morning JawTooth
Nice day for train 🚂

Morning!
Chelsie reading or was reading Train and Railroad magazines!!! 😄 🤣 LoL! I like it you see doing something different in every video. I know that's why you're the best!
And that's one of the best bridges in the area. Passenger's and train crew get the feeling of riding on a roller coaster crossing that bridge. WHEEEEEE.
You need to stop by Erlanger Train Park on a Friday. Plenty of freight trains on Friday. Saw 3 within an hour on the 4th of November.
I saw that bridge deck doing a little rock and roll! Interesting to see if that gets some MOW attention soon. All these trains were booking! Love the horn salute - nice to have enjoyment from the crew for a bigtime railfan :)
That bridge rocks.😉
So jaw tooth and that's train was booking ❤😊
And jaw tooth and that's train was booking ❤😊
Ohio is a fantastic place...I live in the UK and my sister in law lives just outside Cleveland...have managed a few visits over the years and I'm amazed at the size and length if the freight trains.... especially up in Sandusky...my favourite place to visit is Put in Bay...no trains there but a great place to visit...I could easily spend my holiday train spotting in Ohio...the lifting bridges at the Flats are an amazing piece of engineering...👍👍

Holy cow, I thought rail bridges were
More secure than that. It could use some work to secure it. Thanks for showing the old bridge supports and those little white pipes at each end of the bridge and what they’re used for. Entertaining and informative, thanks JT.👍🏼 Awesome horn salute too.
With the length of the train, the coil steel and the huge stone slabs I can see why they had a DPU. I like the countryside, too. 😊😊 Great work!
Pretty cool to see the bridge move, closer to the train makes it easier to count the number of flat spots great video keep up the good work God bless from GA and stay safe
Thanks, will do!
Somerville Ohio you say “MrTooth” It’s always exciting waiting for the train!
Whoever built that bridge didn't do a very god job of it!
I'd stand back away from that if I were you!
Great video today Jawtooth. That bridge was really bouncin'! Filmed in the dead centre of Somerville as well!?! 🙃👍Cheers mate!
hi helllo nice train
Thank you very much for this very nice video! Have a great week! ✨✨✨✨👍Merci beaucoup ! 🙏

Great camp site
I enjoy when trains give railfanners horn shows! nice to know that u guys are appreciated by the engineers
Once again, I've come to your channel to see something I hadn't seen before and found it. Thank you, good sir.
I liked those old concrete blocks and where they were placed. I can figure out how many days until the solstice or equinox. I'll know when to plant and when to harvest my tortilla plants here on El RobPatio. Shouldn't you be wearing your flannel Hawaiian shirts right about now? Sure, it's sunny at the moment, but you could get a lake effect snow storm in minutes without warning. Great location. Nice captures. RT sends, Puebla, México...
In my town, there is an old NYC bridge (tracks removed 1970s) by the cemetery of similar construction. When its very dry, and the creek is low, you can see the piles left over from an earlier wooden structure.
Steel on steel.
What a beautifull song.....
Awesome video with a horn salute but wait there’s more 👍😎🇺🇸🚂🎃
More to come!
I believe that was the quietest train I ever heard. Almost like every one of the cars just had the wheel bearings replaced. 😊 If you ever make it to central or northern Indiana I'd like to hang out with you for a day. I bet you could teach me a lot about trains and railroading.😊
My model railway has the same prototypical action as the bridge! (no need to 'fix' it now, lol)
Up and down up and down. Cool. Love the history. Great video.
Thanks 👍
Thank you for documenting these trains in Sommerville and New Miami, Ohio, Jaw Tooth! You were correct, the bridge was moving under the weight of that fast moving first Norfolk Southern train that went over the bridge. The second train gave you a nice horn salute. I enjoyed watching this video.
I like that old bridge, those trains be bookin'!!!
Great video Jawtooth! It's amazing how much some train bridges move, sometimes I cant believe that there's not more derailment's than we already have, it's amazing trains stay on the tracks well as they do! Thanks for the great video!
That engineer was having a blast giving you that horn salute. Yes, the pun was intended.
Hey Jawtooth!!! Another fantastic video. Love all that CONRAIL QUALITY going by!!!!!!!!! That bridge was scary moving like that.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Morning JT!

The Ties looks new. The blocks look awesome. 3 engines on it and no DPU that Bridge block look cool thanks for sharing the radio channel the radar gun I got the same one as you it works awesome.

OMG...THANK YOU

Love the teeter totter bridge, kinda scary.....Thank you again... 👍😎
I always have it with me but I keep forgetting to use it. Thanks for watching !
Those huge concrete blocks look like they could be from water tower foundations from the Steam Locomotive days.
At 18:40
Cool to see those old signals
Reeeeeally liking your videos! Raw material of American Heartland thanks for posting!! Remember the horizon being hidden by oceans of stream. Would have been maybe 5 years of age!!
Thanks for that!
I remember you being at that old trailer park but it's been a long time. That bridge has a see saw effect for sure. Cool video thanks.
Great video as always! Man, it felt like those trains were traveling around 50 or 60. Crazy that is only about 33 .
The first one is doing every bit of 55 all day long
It was nice to see so many J.B. Hunt trailers being safely transported.
Really, ! Vertical and lateral movement. 10 ties out from the abutment on the landslide. Good catch. GA from CT. USA
Wow I couldn’t believe how that half of the bridge was moving up and down it’s not gonna last very long! I think the only thing holding that bridge up is the long rails but that was a war and the whole thing‘s gonna fall in before lol keep your eye on that bridge maybe check around every couple of weeks and see if you’re in the area, and see if the actual bridge itself with no trains on it has changed probably the spring time when the ground Soffer I don’t know. But wow wow that was scary😬
🤣🤣👏A chicken and a turkey! I remember as a kid on the farm, my dad would put too long framing nails into a stump and then put the turkey’s head between the nails and chop chop! The turkey would run around the yard for I don’t know how long, it was the scariest thing😵💫
🤔 I noticed that that powerline seems to run real low alongside the bridge in the railroad track.
Lotta trains up here in Michigan, they run past a lot of the general motors and all the little second and third tier factories. There’s some right off 75 at 69. Also an airport not far!
Wow it’s really amazing to watch trains go over bridges! To all bridges sink down when trains go over? This bridge here needs more support underneath specially with double Dekker’s going over top! Wow I had to shut it off for a second because I was worried about your safety in the video even though you’ve already recorded this! Lol you have a lot of nerve to stand so close to the trains being so big if a bridge ever gave away or something happened to attract that cause something to happen you’ll never run fast enough to keep from getting crushed by those train cars. It’s too dangerous and scary to be there close!😲
Hi. Retired British Railway Engineer here. The greatest danger is from the rail joints being weakened by the flexing. Hope there are no fish-plated joints near to the abutments! Unsupported joints can cause rails to break. Some shims are needed, otherwise, it looks okay.
Whoa, that bridge does move a lot, I guess its the new flex bridge... I'd be a bit concerned.
"No Left Turn" cause it would hurt, such a cool light !! You could hear the sound of that last train picking up speed... Neat !! 👍
Super Awesome Video !! 👍👍👍
That train was rolling !!! Thank you Jaw Tooth.
@3:45 those concrete blocks look like water tower footings like the ones next to the tracks in Peebles Ohio, Also those PVC pipes are probably stop markers for brush cutters or ballast regulators .
What a crazy find. That bridge is more like a teeter totter !
Love watching your videos. Many are from my old stomping grounds around Cincinnati. Madisonville, Norwood, etc!
Very cool!
It was rocking on the center support. That was by design.
That was a great catch with that bridge rocking the way it did. Love the radar gun too.
I am also a lover of trains ,thank you for making such videos.
You got very lucky to catch those last three trains before you even left for home. Wow, what a break huh !? 😃 Great video from a pretty great guy! Hello to the fur babies. 🐕🐈
Another great video of the NS trains between going over that bridge that were rolling right along! And the other 2 NS trains you intercepted on the way home! The horn SALUTE by the engineer on the UP train was awesome and it shows he likes his job and enjoys seeing railfans! Just now getting to see this bcuz I had Lethrotrepsy at the hospital this morning for a kidney stone! Everything went well and got home around noon. Thanks again for sharing this video JT with some amazing footage! Cheers from Delmar, Delaware.
I sat at a rural Iowa train crossing. Just a few yards passed the road crossing the ballast had totally been washed out from under the rails and ties for maybe an 8 foot section. Watching the train going over this you would not believe the flex in the rails. I backed way back from the crossing expecting a derailment at any time. Believe it or not the train passed safely!
I saw a video from WWII where our allies were trying to determine how much track needed to be removed to derail a train. Way more than you'd think!
Great video Jaw Tooth.
Love the back roads . To get to the Railway Tracks . Love it great video have a great day Day cheers

I'd never heard of your channel until today; not sure why UA-cam showed it to me, but it was fun to watch. I love the shot of your dog near the end. He looks kinda like my stepdaughter's dog Stormy, who is a blue heeler (I think that's what she said). The cat made me laugh - looked like it figured out right away that the mouse wasn't real...probably read the tag. LOL
WHOA, That bridge was moving way too much. The railroad has to be called to let them know about that bridge.
